All said and done, what is more important is the competence of the System Administrator and his/her familiarity with the underlying OS is of utmost importance. if the person is competent with fedora pushing Ubuntu on them may not be such a good idea. Re: [ubuntu-in] All hands on the deck!
I personally feel Drupal would be the way to go, especially with the efforts like here https://launchpad.net/ubuntu-drupal which aim to make Drupal even more suitable for LoCo teams. We could segregate content into editable wiki section and have more static introductory pages. I second Nitish's blog aggregator proposal (which once again can be easily done using Ubuntu Drupal Planet https://launchpad.net/ubuntu-drupal-planet). Also, IMHO having a separate login system is redundant and we should seek to integrate with Launchpad or Canonical Single Sign On. I'm happy to see this is finally taking off. Looking forward to contributing. [ubuntu-uk] 10.10 System Freeze Problem
Hi Guys Since clean-installing Xubuntu 10.10 on an Acer 1410 laptop, the system is freezing up once or twice during a daily 8 hour session. The mouse and keyboard become inoperative and, if I disconnect the mouse then reconnect it, the mouse does not light up, suggesting that no power is being fed through the USB port. I've not had 10.10 long enough to observe any particular pattern or scenario that causes the problem. It certainly didn't occur with 10.4. Does anybody know of an existing log file, or application I can use, to help identify the cause? Please bear in mind that, as I have to kill the power before rebooting, any log files may not be closed cleanly. Thanks very much. The Openfire Red5 plugin as far as I know (I've never used it myself) is non-standard so I don't think it will work with any client other than their own (Spark). The standard Jabber voice/video protocol (Jingle) is server-independent, and should work with any client that supports it. Popular clients I know support it are Empathy, Pidgin, Psi (might be voice only...), and Gajim. Support in many of them is relatively new, the latest Gajim with support may not yet be in the repositories yet for example. Pidgin and Psi both support Windows. Psi might be voice-only at the moment, I haven't tested it myself. In theory Jingle-capable clients shall also be able to communicate with Google Talk clients when Google update it to use the latest version of the protocol, but we'll have to hold on for now... As for choice of server - if you get tired of Openfire I couldn't not recommend the one I work on, Prosody. Re: How to install Maverick with orca?
Hi, I tried a fresh install for Maverick using the old trick: 1. starting the machine with de live cd and pressing the spacebar every 2 second. 2. a screen appears to select a language. 3. After pressing enter to chose a language I then press F5 then 3 and twice on the enterkey. 4. Orca came up but with no sound. With the help of a sighted person the sound seems being mute. So after this was unmuted I could install with the help of Orca. There is one screen when installing with 2 checkboxes for updating and another option. Checking those Orca go silent. Leaving those unchecked Orca went through the installation. AW: Putting the cart before the horse. (was: Final Notes on the Ubuntu Studio Website)
Von: Benjamin Turner passionsplaydes...@gmail.com An: Ubuntu Studio Development Technical Discussion ubuntu-studio-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Gesendet: Samstag, den 16. Oktober 2010, 17:53:40 Uhr Betreff: Re: Putting the cart before the horse. (was: Final Notes on the Ubuntu Studio Website) I updated the revamp wiki to include a fictionalized target audience - his name is James! I do this profile creation a lot when I'm working on a project -- kind of puts a face to who I'm trying to design for. Anyway, I tried to create a person that we want to be using Ubuntu Studio (even though he isn't the only one, he is the 'main' one) Have a look, and see if it's kind of who everyone imagines our target user to be. Also, I made some updates to the Audio Horizons theme: Keeping James' needs in mind, I tried to simplify things down, and make it easy to a) find out why Ubuntu studio is right for him and b) once he tries it, how he can get various tasks done. So in reference to a) the main page is almost entirely devoted to What Ubuntu Studio *is* and how it can help *you*. As for b) I tried to make it easy to navigate lots of information. The main categories are accessed from the top 'main nav' while secondary navigation changes on the left with each 'category' selection. Specifically for the Support section, I envision a brief blurb for the major programs included, (Why is it that Jack is the first thing you start for everything audio?) with links to additional help. Additionally there would be a 'Task' section that would outline the workflows and tools needed to get a task done. So yeah, let me know what you think! -- Benjamin Hi Benjamin! Very cool! I like it a lot and would like to learn whether all your creations were done using Ubuntu Studio applications? For example, one can create a great looking image in GIMP resembling a website, but how does one proceed further. Which tools would one use to turn the GIMP file into an HTML file? I guess this could be something included in the tasks section. Thanks again. Design Aesthetics in Ubuntu Studio
Before joining Ubuntu Studio's mailing list, I was really interested in two things: 1) Ubuntu Studio's web presence/strategy and 2) The GUI/theme/colors of the OS itself. I want to take this opportunity to use this thread as a place to discuss and organize that design-oriented direction of Ubuntu Studio for the next release. The way Ubuntu Studio looks and feels is going to be the deal breaker for 98% of the people that use it. If we release something that's nothing short of visually stunning and well thought out, there will be no doubt our next release will be met with much approval in the linux community (as well as the much larger art/music community). So here are some topics I think we should cover: *Installer*- Let's get a graphical installer in the next release. Ubuntu has one, so there is no reason that Ubuntu Studio shouldn't. It will make things much easier for the inexperienced Linux user. *Default Theme- *I'm not sure if we are going to use Ubuntu's latest theme (it's quite pretty if you ask me), or not. I personally hated US's old theme and I'm sure we can come up with something much cleaner for gnome. *Default Wallpaper*- There was an email about this, and I really liked that wallpaper. Any other suggestions? If there are any other things, please feel free to add it. Let's make this next release the best one ever! -Louie -- Ubuntu-Studio-devel mailing list Ubuntu-Studio-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-studio-devel
