 Hello there!

As per the recent discussions we have had on the IRC channel, it has come

This has led us to the decision that we should close the forums. Since
there is nothing archive-worthy on the forums, I'm going to take a backup of
the database (just in case) and take them down.

evenings seem to be better than during the day for most people in terms
of IRC access and having an hour or so to concentrate. Allowing for
trains to arrive, meals to be eaten, kids to be tucked up in bed that
means 8PM is the earliest practical time, and 9PM seems better for some.
We could split the difference and try for 8:30 I suppose. I am thinking
of calling a meeting on this Monday evening, it doesn't seem to clash
with anything else on the Ubuntu fridge calendar. Now would be a great
time to object, and suggest a different time/date

8.30 or 9.00 is fine by me. I have to get off early on the Tuesday for
a conference near Hoddesdon, so there's no way I'm going to be on IRC
'till midnight. I don't know what internet access I'll get at the
conference centre; if I'm having to use my gsm dongle, I won't be able
to IRC Tuesday or Wednesday, and Thursday I have an early start for a
funeral, but Monday would be just fine for me.

There is a more general list at

 2) Its the device ID that is important. It has been known for
manufacturers to use the Model numbers for different ID's, usually in
different countries. My C250 has ID 046d:0804 and was bought in the UK.

Just as a point of reference, IRC is very bandwidth efficient as it is
pure text with tiny fractional overhead. GPRS is also metered by
bytes, not wall clock time, so these two go together very well.

If you just connect to the one IRC channel you need to be on then the
entire hour will come to about the same as downloading a single email.

Possible reasons for this are:

1. The DVD is not in a bootable format.

Please describe the process you used to create the edubuntu DVD.

2. Your computer is not set to boot automatically from DVD.

The default boot sequence is set in the computer BIOS. You should enter
the set-up options and change the boot sequence to put the DVD above the
HDD. Alternatively, some computers have the facility to call up a list
of all bootable devices that you can select the DVD from. (Note that
some older computers may not have either feature)

Thanks - hadn't realised that. I don't use a broadband contract for my
dongle, just the sim out of my PAYG phone. It's cheap (30p per day) if
I don't go above 50 Mb in that day. If I do, it gobbles my credit
really fast. Normally, I only use it for keeping up with e-mails while
I'm away and where I can't get wi-fi access, which is very rare these
days. Almost everywhere you stay has either wi-fi or an ethernet
socket.

Have you set the BIOS to boot from CD/DVD?

(Basically when the machine boots you may have to press a key to get
into the BIOS, this might be the delete company, or F1, F2 maybe).
There should be an option in there to select the startup sequence.

On some machines you can also select a temporary boot device (on my
machine for instance if I press F12 at boot up I can select to boot from
CD/DVD, USB hard drive etc.

It might also help if you can tell us what you see in Windows when you
put the DVD in. Do you just see one file for instance
edubuntu-10.10-dvd-i386.iso or do you see a selection of files and folders?

Try running and 'top' and 'iotop' when you've felt it getting over

Linux Mint Debian - very, very impressed! Probably going to stick with

Mousewheel isn't working

2011-01-08 Thread Ralf Mardorf
Neither for Lucid, nor for Maverick. Sometimes it 'randomly' works. This
will happen with and without a xorg.conf.

OT: My Ubuntu Studio Lucid is a PITA, jackd (self compiled) + qtractor
(self-compiled) + fluidsynth-dssi (from the repositories) = with every
change for a soundfont, there will be the need to kill and launch again
the apps. Some days ago I installed Edubuntu Maverick + Ubuntu Studio by
the repositories. I'm not finished now (I e.g. need to build a
kernel-rt) , but at least the Internet seems to work normal, while it is
slow for Lucid and unfortunately there still is the mouse wheel issue.

Cheers!

Ralf

2011-01-08 Thread Fernando Gomes
Hi

As I posted yesterday, I had a Tascam US122 until a week ago, and it
worked flawlessly with every UbuntuStudio distributions I've used (at
least from 8,xx until the 10.xx). I had other problems with RT kernels
and my hardware configuration, but not with the tascam. Unfortunatly I
don't have it now, and I also have losted the information that I have
compiled about its installation to put in an article on
www.openstudio.info. I'll try to get at least some info from my last
installation from the history command, but I can say that it was
almost using the link already posted:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/TASCAM_US-122

From what I remember (I'm not in my home studio PC right now and I'll
confirm it later), I've used a more recent alsa firmware, I think it
was this version:

ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/firmware/alsa-firmware-1.0.23.tar.bz2

Then, on step 6 you should use the second option, replacing the
002/003 by the results you get from lsusb:

# sudo fxload -s /path/to/ld2-ezusb.hex -I
/usr/share/alsa/firmware/usx2yloader/us122fw.ihx -D
/dev/bus/usb/002/003

Also in step 7 you should do first this command to create a link
because the files are not in the place the program is expecting:

# sudo ln -s /usr/share/alsa/firmware/usx2yloader /lib/firmware/usx2yloader

I suppose that the sugested udev integration is being deprecated, but
it works at least for now.

I didn't change the default soundcard because I select it in jack

Once I can retreive the history information from my homestudio PC I'll
make the necessary corrections. Can you tell us what is not working
during your tascam us122 installation?

Automating UBS Setup for a project ...

2011-01-08 Thread Rolf Krüger
Hi All,

When producing a song, I always use several apps on UBS:
 - qjackctl
 - ardour (outs connected to jamin, not to my soundcards system out)
 - Muse (for Midi) (routing the outputs to busses in ardour, the outs of
muse are never connected to my soundcards system out)
 - Hydrogen (routing the outputs to busses in ardour, the outs of
hydrogen are never connected to my soundcards system out)
 - jamin (connected to the master outs of ardour, set to bypass during
recording/mixing, only acive when mastering)

Is there a way to automate/script the setup for a song so that all apps
are up and running, have loaded the appropriate data files and routed
correctly by running a single shell script?
I found out that I´m able to script jack and do the connections, but I
have no idea to have muse, hydrogen or jamin with the proper data files.

Thanx in advance
Rolf

I have to spoil the specific take on USB interfaces: Hey, I hear it when you
move the mouse! That's what I got with someone listening with headphones to
the main output of my Edirol FA-101. I'm glad that you don't get that on the
recordings (I _think_), just superimposed on the analog output portion.
But still, I am mightily pi**ed about the lack of protection from such issues
(our dear friend Improper Grounding again, I guess) even when shelling out
several 100 € for the gear.

Be it USB or any other digital interface, I guess you can have luck and the bad
sort of which. I do not see a technical argument why a USB-connected device
should suffer more than a device connected via FireWire (both being
bus-powered, even) ... you can get bitten on both camps. For simple recording
tasks, I really like the io|2 -- no comparison in bitchyness to the FireWire
setup. I ended up angrily smashing a dual socket mainboard with a hammer
because it featured a southbridge bug that just so might be the reason for
reliable FireWire audio being impossible -- even using a PCI controller with a
good FireWire chip. I strongly suspect that a USB interface would have worked
just fine. Perhaps not ultra sharp latency, but without all the fuss.

That being said, by current setup with ubuntu studio 10.04 and the FA-101 on a
custom PC worked without major hickup the last few weeks ... but I very well
remember having to reboot the machine (or at least modprobe-cycle firewire)
because the firewire subsystem got stuck because of just another subtle driver
issue. The FA-101 is a rather old device, but still tricky. No comparison to
just having snd-usb-audio loaded and off we go -- with the added plus that it
works without JACK, too. To be fair: USB interfaces may not like being put
behind a hub... so they're not _totally_ trivial;-)

Alrighty then,

Thomas.

PS: To be a bit more on topic again; I did not test the MIDI performance of any
of my USB or FireWire interfaces (uh, would that work with the FA-101?). I am
using an Alesis ControlPad with in-built USB for triggering drums via MIDI ...
but I don't play seriously enough on that one to judge.

Still sad that that's necessary, isn't it? But at least it is good to have a
way out. For that reason I pointed out the symmetric outputs of the io|2.

and not the USB interface i wanted to use (because of the size).

Of course, you can get crap on all sides. I won't argue with your experience,
just wanted to add mine for perspective.

i dont think the quality of firewire vs USB can be
 challenged.

I do challenge, though;-) The actual sound quality really should not differ if
the device is built well (and more and more high-class USB devices are coming
to market) -- it's a digital interface, after all. When it is only about
recording, with direct monitoring from the device or external mixer, USB should
do the job just as well, shoving down the bytes with a certain rate, like
millions of thumb drives.
MIDI may be another issue...

the USB device i use needs the madfuloader

OK, that sounds ugly. Of course there are USB devices that are a PITA to use
(like that Tascam with the L), but at least there is a category of
plug-and-play with the standard USB audio class driver. I don't see how setup
should be simpler with a FireWire device where you _have_ to run JACK because
nothing else uses ffado.

 cat /proc/interrupts

... and then that whole business. Yes, I dealt with that. I dealt with a laptop
with crappy chipset. I shifted PCI cards around ... this is not funny. Of
course, there are ways to get lucky, but I have the feeling that it's the norm
to have such troubles when first setting up a FireWire interface, while it is
the exception for USB to get a faulty mainboard that for some reason doesn't
talk right.
The complication with the io|2 was that it refuses to work when you plug it
into a hub, needs direct connection. That is a sort of problem that users can
be expected to solve: Unplug here, replug there ... aah! With audio tech you do
that pluggin' around all the time;-)

visit a professional studio, the likely-hood of seeing a USB interface in a
rack somewhere, or in the signal path at all would be rather unlikely.

Well, before USB 2 devices becoming mainstream, USB was no option for studio
work as you only get 2 channels through. FireWire was the only solution to get
at least 8 or 16 tracks -- besides PCI cards. I believe one reason to rarely
see USB stuff is that simply people don't have reason to ditch working FireWire
setups. They bought FireWire gear while digitalizing the studio (or ramping up
from internal PC interfaces) and trust that, now. Who knows how it looks in 5
years, or 10?
I also have said FA-101 in my rack, but I surely had my trouble getting a
reliable FireWire setup (interface chips, interrrupts, mainboards, ...). I have
the suspicion that my life would have been easier with some USB gear of
_today_. Back then, there was no alternative, really. Of course, you won't see
USB gear in my rack until the FA-101 died, or until I decide that I want more
than 8 channels, because chaining up another FA-101 won't work right since
Edirol managed to break the synchronization in that model... hm, OK: Hooking
multiple USB devices up to each other and get them synched is not known
practice (to me). Looks like a point for FireWire, still. My point isn't that
it's no better than USB, anyway -- it's that it can add complication in
situations where you don't need any advantage over USB.

Though, I must confess: I do not have experienced a multichannel USB interface
in action. All I was talking about was simplicity to get some recording going,
where latency can as big as it may be, does not matter, and where 2 channels
are enough. I would not dare to get into FireWire for that.

Anyhow, this is getting out of hand ... I should stop ranting. Somehow I had to
get some frustration off my chest -- combined with the relief of the io|2 just
working(tm). Perhaps it is a lucky case ... I just see that people also had
their troubles with the Edirol UA-101, mainly because it needs a special driver
-- I guess most of the mixers with USB interface are 2-channel after all, so
have less issues with just being USB class compliant audio devices.

Alrighty then,

Thomas.

you be patient with all of us; linux applications take time to work through
and for one, I'd say what fellow Ubuntu users do for one another is
spectacular considering we commit to helping one another year in and year
out. I thank you for sharing the mystery that Tascam US-122 brought you. If
you have not yet done so, tell more symptoms associated with the problem you
are having. Post them. Perhaps another user with more experience than you or
I can guide you to a solution. It is possible that you may click on System
Administration Synaptic Package Manager that you may put Tascam US-122
into the finder and click on install Tascam US-122, which I believe will
uninstall and reinstall Tascam US-122. If that program truly does what it is
supposed to do, this procedure may cause the system to cure itself. Plus, if
you get odd outputs, posting those back here may bring you help. Sorry, I
cannot bring you a complete solution. Good luck but again, be patient. Ken

 Hey all,

I am a newbie with Ubuntu (1yr): I've been running 10.04 Lucid (studio)

there who has the skills of knowledge to troubleshoot or problem solve
getting my Tascam US-122 (which is a device that fits the exact description
of the topic I'm replying to) to work with Ubuntu. I have read EVERY posting
on the forums, official and unofficial, got a hold of some VERY
knowledgeable and extremely helpful Ubuntu veterans, but my US-122 is still
dead in the water. I'm just wondering if any of you wants to have mercy on
me and see if you can come up with any options I can pursue. I guess the
second part of this message is that if no one out there can help me, don't
buy a tascam US-122, as I have spent (genuinely) over 30 hours of my time
trying to get this thing to even blink, to no avail. From a noob's (very
limited) perspective, I am quite disappointed in the Studio version of
Ubuntu, as it hasn't been able to work with my hardware, even after tons of
homework, consulting, trial and error etc.

[Ubuntu-BR] Firewall

[Ubuntu-BR] Terminal do Ubuntu (Buffer)

2011-01-08 Thread Nayane Lima
Oi gente.

Estou com uma bronca terrível. Busquei no Google e não encontrei.
Quero aumentar o buffer do Terminal, entende? vou explicar:

conseguir localizar.

Agradeço a quem puder ajudar-me

O terminal padrão do Ubuntu é o bash. A configuração para os usuários fica

Nele você encontra isso:

E aí você adiciona o valor desejado para essas variáveis

[Ubuntu-BR] [DICA] Instalando o novo Cinelerra (ppa)

[Bug 700288] [NEW] amavisd-release not working with quarantine_subdir_levels

2011-01-08 Thread Cyril Jaquier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: amavisd-new

amavisd-release does not work when quarantine_subdir_levels is set to 1
(and probably more). This is the default in 10.04 LTS:

r...@rand:/etc/amavis/conf.d# grep quarantine_subdir 20-debian_defaults
$quarantine_subdir_levels = 1; # enable quarantine dir hashing

When trying to release an e-mail, it seems that amavisd returns the
wrong path as you can see below:

r...@rand:/etc/amavis/conf.d# find /var/lib/amavis/virusmails/ -name bad*
/var/lib/amavis/virusmails/V/badh-Vzji0yHNymWh
/var/lib/amavis/virusmails/k/badh-k0IqReVcboI3
/var/lib/amavis/virusmails/x/badh-xDEZb5Q+stEv
/var/lib/amavis/virusmails/I/badh-IGjIOydvUwg0
r...@rand:/etc/amavis/conf.d# amavisd-release badh-k0IqReVcboI3
450 4.5.0 Failure: File /var/lib/amavis/virusmails/badh-k0IqReVcboI3 does not
exist at (eval 111) line 385, GEN182 line 5.
r...@rand:/etc/amavis/conf.d#

The subdir ('k' in this case) is not in the path so it seems that
quarantine_subdir_levels is not taken into account in this case.

My amavisd-new version:

ii amavisd-new 1:2.6.4-1ubuntu5 Interface

latest packages:

This is a brand new installation. The sequence of steps to reproduce
this are:

1. Install Maverick on a RAID 1 system. Separate / and /home partition.
2. Install Updates
3. Install graphics card hardware driver
4. Download ifenslave. Configure bonding. Set static IP address.
5. Install NTP

[Bug 700337] [NEW] No documentation for process migration

2011-01-08 Thread klausner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: migrationtools

Not sure this is even filed against the right package. Current versions
of Ubuntu start multiple instances of a process called migration, but
there is no documentation on it to be found.

The low PIDs of some instances imply a kernel job.

ps for it looks like: root 6 2 0 06:28 ?00:00:00

This is obviously an important process, so where is the man page or
other documentation? Google, apropos, and other searches find nothing.

computers were capable of viewing and transferring files between one another

2011-01-08 Thread John Kounis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ntp

I believe this is a duplicate of bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ntp/+bug/569919, which has a status
of Fix Released
But I have the fix, and the problem still occurs.

Every 5 minutes, ntpd complains about being unable to create a socked on
an ipv6 address. I'm running a new installation of Maverick 10.10. Here
is my syslog:

Jan 8 04:05:01 pgfs ntpd[2608]: synchronized to 91.189.94.4, stratum 2
Jan 8 04:05:01 pgfs ntpd[2608]: kernel time sync status change 2001

Jan 8 04:10:42 pgfs ntpd[2608]: bind() fd 22, family AF_INET6, port 123, scope
4, addr fe80::217:31ff:fef8:f63f, mcast=0 flags=0x11 fails: Cannot assign

Jan 8 04:10:42 pgfs ntpd[2608]: failed to initialize interface for address
fe80::217:31ff:fef8:f63f

I'm running ntp 1:4.2.4p8+dfsg-1ubuntu6.
FYI, here is the output of md5sum /usr/sbin/ntp*. I think these are the latest
packages:

42415ef5eb851dabe9d06a67cf992d28 /usr/sbin/ntpd
c1d85ce075c70928b53692561fdc5277 /usr/sbin/ntpdate
79af988228131692520be14d25355a8e /usr/sbin/ntpdate-debian
d4ae7ee172f7ed340c4e1b406c04d16d /usr/sbin/ntp-keygen
b7f7e4e0fb1d4e2aece718b18ae28b46 /usr/sbin/ntptime
7d4b58d1da97ba46ba8eeab08b345a44 /usr/sbin/ntp-wait

This is a brand new installation. The sequence of steps to reproduce
this are:

1. Install Maverick on a RAID 1 system. Separate / and /home partition.
2. Install Updates
3. Install graphics card hardware driver
4. Download ifenslave. Configure bonding. Set static IP address.
5. Install NTP

[NAS] iomega StorCenter - plantage NFS

2011-01-08 Thread Cyprien Gay
Bonjour,

/etc/fstab
192.168.254.1:/nethdd/public /media/nethdd/public nfs
user,noauto,sync,intr,rsize=4096,wsize=4096,tcp,nfsvers=30 0

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jumbo_frame
mais ça ne change rien.

Quelqu'un aurait-il une idée de piste
pour voir d'où ça peut venir ?
Merci beaucoup !

Cyprien.

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Flickr or Picasaweb?

2011-01-08 Thread Elizabeth Krumbach
Hi everyone,

At our last meeting[0] we discussed and agreed upon the proposal to
keep copies of our images in a directory on the server (probably
tar.gz) under our control, as well as a copy up on Yahoo!'s Flickr or
Google's PicasaWeb for display and social media integration (global
event tagging, loco.ubuntu.com support, etc).

Now it's time to decide which service to use. I don't have a strong
preference either way (I personally use Flickr, but I also have a
considerable amount of data with various Google services), but it is
worth noting:

Access: Both services have APIs and support uploading via f-spot or
shotwell (and presumably there are other programs which do as well,
since the API exists).

Cost: The free Flickr account has a monthly limit for uploads and how
many photos can be displayed at a time, unless you pay a small yearly
fee if you want unlimited space, Picasa uses shared gmail space for
approx 7.5G before you need to pay small amounts for space increases.
The costs for these are small and raising donations won't be a problem
(I'm even willing to go out of pocket myself on these).

Social Media: Tagging and sharing controls differ between the
services, and I haven't looked into this. It's probably worthwhile to
do so.

Other thoughts? Preferences?

Thanks everyone.

[Bug 700236] [NEW] user and account application passwd crashes

2011-01-08 Thread billhuey
Public bug reported:

In a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10 certain inputs for the changing
the password from the administrative tools result in a premature
termination of the spawned passwd program that's forked to handle the
change.

It seems to trigger on certain input cases. It might be the case that
'passwd' is rejecting a change and the controlling script is failing to
handle the error condition.
