[ubuntu-in] Looking for companies to apply for internship
We have a internship semester early next year and I was looking for Companies who are working with open source technologies. I live in Pune right now and am interested in interning with such a company in Pune or Mumbai preferably, or anywhere else in India. I would love to know about some of the companies where I could try and apply for internship. As an additional question: Does Gnome take interns only through GSOC? This is the probable set of features: 1) Subscribe to RSS 0.9x, 1.0, 2.0 and Atom feeds 2) Download podcasts and save in the file system. 3) Freely configure your keyboard shortcuts 4) Search through all downloaded articles 5) Categorize and query your subscriptions with a flexible tag system 6) Integrate any data source through a flexible filter and plugin system possibly through extension system (Opera/Chromium). Firefox is still running in a terrible beta and I really don't mind shifting to a browser if it gets my work done. For the time being, I am in Opera. 7) Automatically remove unwanted articles through a killfile (this is something that no one has implemented) 8) Define meta feeds using a powerful query language 9) Port and exporting your subscriptions with the widely used OPML format 10) Keep all your feeds in sync with Google Reader (they have an API for that!) 11) Download all the articles in one single pane; for example the you tube videos and fetch complete articles. 12) There is a lot of things happening in medical field. For example, there is a web site called as Mendeley (www.mendeley.com) which allows one to store the articles and meta data. Suppose the feed reader were to be integrated with Mendeley AND Twitter, the existing data/RSS feeds can be cross checked in REAL time. I think, one has to port their API (someone has to think about making a plug in for this!). This RSS Reader, in my humble opinion, would then become a content discovery platform. You can use this reader to search for stuff of your choice. Get an API of say Hacker News or Digg, tag by keywords say ruby and everything related to ruby would be there in it. Then see for the contextual linkage- how well the articles are related by means of a simple tag cloud. Voila! You have the best content offline :) Is this possible? The listed suggestions are not cool. It has to be either implemented from ground up or some other way. Or a GUI needs to be provided. What is the opinion? Interesting project idea. Many of us could get together and build a fresh new reader from ground up. What we need is not retailers selling branded ubuntu laptops but training and involvement sessions (through whichever media- ads, talks, online). People need to know about ubuntu and its culture. That is a lot of space. What will happen if I decide to delete my the contents of the /usr dir? Now i know i will lose the user installed apps. What else will happen? Will the sys be still bootable and importantly usable? Deleting the usr directory will not be fatal, but your system will be rendered unusable. usr/ does not only include user installed apps but also the other apps which makes up your working OS (they are in the /usr/bin). I don't recommend deleting the /usr directory to make space. Instead try removing applications you don't need. Also, sometimes the apt cache gets too big and should be cleaned up to free space. You can do it manually if you know what you are doing or you can use some app to do that like 'Computer Janitor' (preinstalled) or I suggest 'Ubuntu Tweak' (try this). I don't know why but I have this strong feeling that I may convert to Mac once I can afford one :P After all if I have to go for closed open source why not go for a better and solid closed closed source. I am going to convert to a mac too. But... Mac will be replacing Windows not Ubuntu :P That is if I am able to dual boot in a mac book pro, the procedure in the forums was pretty elaborate. But I think I read somewhere that they are working on easier Ubuntu installations on Mac at the Google summer of Code. These developments made one thing clear - I am not going to be a complete one-OS convert , not at least in near future. Options are always good. Somebody once rightly said in an IRC channel: don't stick to one distro for long, you will lose the thrill. I am loosing it :) Nice line.. But actually Ubuntu keeps up the thrill with its six month release cycles and all the new features added weekly. I follow 3 main ubuntu blogs and am surprised and excited about all the amazing features and news which keep on coming. There are applications I never heard of and which should have been heard of. The huge forum and support. Basically i like it very much Over the recent months there has been a lot of chatter about minor and maybe not so minor aspects. First there was the dropping and inclusion of different programmes (e.g. GIMP) not big things but when many small things add up they become to big. (OT) These changes may seem small, but they are really big ones. Especially the 'window buttons on the left' one. I really don't understand it, they shouldn't add such changes in an LTS release. If they would want to experiment, they can experiment in Lucid+1. Then there is this Ubuntu is not a democracy, Mark Shuttleworth Sounds crazy saying it like that but to read what he had to say check out Mark Shuttleworth: This is not a democracy http://www.webupd8.org/2010/03/ubuntu-is-not-democratic.html and some related discussions http://www.osnews.com/story/23039/Kicking_in_Open_Doors_Open_Source_Is_Not_a_Democracy and http://www.itworld.com/open-source/101641/open-source-not- democracy?source=smlynch Well, Ubuntu has become very big and that's all because of it's community. Not because of Canonical. There are people who spend nights contributing to Ubuntu, just for the sake of the community and Canonical is now completely ignoring them. In my opinion there should be some kind of open poll before making big changes that would affect the whole community, but no why will they do it, Ubuntu is not a democracy ya know :) Well thats what he meant. Kind off. The kernel team decides the kernel because they are the ones who work on it. No one else can vote for their decisions because they have the merit of packing the kernel. The design team contribute to design and no one outside their team decides upon the design because they spend nights contributing to it. That sounds like a professional way to manage things. On a personal note, I am completely OK with the buttons on the left. In fact I had them on the left even before Canonical decided to (my reason was because mac has it and mac windows.. stupid reason though ). Plus, now I am used to it and sometimes feel weird using the buttons on the right in MS Windows (I have the opposite problem). What I reason to myself is that: 1) Canonical's design is new, it does not imitate mac (mac has the opposite order) nor does it imitate windows. That is bad if you look at it in terms of user migration from windows to ubuntu. But people migrate to mac too from their windows and adapt well to it. So ubuntu has something unique. 2) Mark Shuttleworth said that the next Ubuntu will have something good on the right hand side. Right now there is the extra options to move the windows from one workspace to the other and all that. But hopefully they will get something good. Re: [ubuntu-in] If not Ubuntu then what
So not debating the specifics of Mark Shuttleworth's comments and the reactions and the interpretations, I am getting an uneasy feeling. That maybe just maybe we are becoming Ubuntu dependent and too complacent. I can walk blindfolded through a typical Ubuntu install and its subsequent setup of additional programmes, tweaking programmes to work like they should for me. Knowing what repos to add to get exactly what software and where to source software (tuxwire, zyware). I cannot be happier with what i have. But what if we need to move to a freer system. Are there any other distro's out there. Sure there are 600 plus many of them with a passionate user base and with its attendant problem. Ubuntu has gone far from being a typical linux distro and its because of canonical. Ubuntu is now capable of challenging the macintosh and windows in their own game as a proper all-level consumer product. Getting its own music-store, thats an amazing feat (and its possible because of Canonical). Free and open source softwares are good. But in the main OS battlefield you cannot place your linux OS without a strong dedicated company (which will steer the advertising and management) backing it. Of course, the linux OS can be amazing in functioning, but thats it. It won't create much of an impact on 'everyone'. Canonical can rightfully guide ubuntu (and its amazing that they do it as saints). Because ubuntu is getting so popular, its essential for ubuntu to have Canonical securing its interests. The final decision to what appears in ubuntu is Canonical's decision and they really have to base their decision (now) on the fact that ubuntu is being eyed as a fierce competitor to mac and windows (even though there are other good linux OS, Ubuntu has entered the consumer stream more deeply). A good proof of this happening is that all the major softwares when available for download focus on ubuntu as a major consumer linux OS. I love Ubuntu because frankly till now I have had no objections to Canonical's decisions. I weigh their decisions in terms of its effect on new users not me because I know that the decision won't really affect me because I can choose what I want after installing the default. Canonical does not enforce but merely makes their decisions idiot-proof. My questions are how would people feel about trying out a distro other than Ubuntu (specially first time users), in fact have first time linux Ubuntu users tried other distro's and what do they feel. I started of with fedora 1 and went through a variety and can make another distro do to my bidding. I tried fedora. Found it not much different from my experience on ubuntu. Even though Ubuntu is moving to be more idiot-proof, it has definitely not left behind the powerhouse of linux like what fedora has. This is the best thing I like about ubuntu. You can team up old-school and new-school. Plus, I found ubuntu's development and package managers more better. Another distro I tried was Archos. Its brilliant! and fun. You can build your own OS based on your choice. I ruined my OS :P My other question is how many of us dual boot a second linux OS and is your secondary OS as well set as your primary, are you comfortable with it, under all conditions. I had windows, ubuntu, fedora on the same computer. For some time I used fedora more than Ubuntu to see whether I should keep it. Eventually after a month I removed fedora from my main computer and gave its space to Ubuntu. Though I have had mad varieties on linux OS on my laptop. Currently I have Lucid beta1, Ubuntu karmic server and archos. I use archos mainly. My 3rd question is what would you suggest people try as a fall back option in case people want to try and alternative. My suggestions are Pardus, Mandriva, OpenSuse, Fedora, Knoppix Others have suggested Arch Linux I would suggest Fedora and so would Linus Torvald :) The few times in the recent past when i tried another distro i very quickly reverted back to Ubuntu, since i was uncomfortable around my system but now i think its worth exploring an alternative in great earnest. look forward to reactions ram For me, I go with the fact that at the end of the day, Ubuntu is just linux OS with different packages than other OS, apt-get can get you anywhere. -- Ashutosh Rishi Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in

Re: [ubuntu-in] Difficulty faced with UBUNTU 9.10
Hi, Ubuntu 9.10 has always been able to configure my Internet connections automatically. In the previous version I had to play around a bit. Try keeping the IPv4 settings to 'Automatic (DHCP)' and IPv6 to 'Ignore' and then try. For Softwares, *.exe is an executable program for Windows. A software called WINE (look it up) adds a Windows compatibility layer on Linux so that you can run some of the Window's programs. But it is always better and in face very much recommended to use Linux alternatives. The Ubuntu Software Center in Karmic has a good number of useful softwares for most purposes. Take for example Acrobat Reader, Ubuntu already has a pdf reader by default known as 'Document Viewer'. To edit, just search for 'pdf' in the Ubuntu Software Center and you have 'PDF editor'(pdfEdit). You can also search for a PDF editor for Linux on Google and once you land up with one, search how to install it or search if its there in the Ubuntu Software Center. (I think there is a binary package for Acrobat Reader on the main site, you will need the terminal for running it, search 'how to run .bin files on Ubuntu) There are other ways of installing software on Ubuntu. The three best ones are by PPA archives, DEB package and the one above (which is dependent on PPA only). DEB packaged or 'debian' packages ( *.deb) are basically software packages which are installed by simply double clicking them on Ubuntu (like .exe). Ubuntu has a built-in DEB installer. PPA are the most popular and efficient. A PPA (Personal Package Archive) is a link source to an archive from where Ubuntu can download packages (softwares). Its better than DEB because once the software maker updates its software in his PPA, the one who have from that PPA will be updated to. DEB has to be freshly installed for updating. There are many tutorials for using PPA on Ubuntu. Look them up and learn more about it. Its very useful. Ubuntu has many softwares for the same function. And the best part, they are free and open-source. Ashutosh Rishi Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in

Re: [ubuntu-in] Canonical only to send free cd's to developers
The idea that a ShipIt CD will solve the problems of someone on reduced bandwidth is rather silly; within a month or two after launch, each distro needs 100MB+ of updates anyway. Most Linux distros, including Ubuntu, are designed with the assumption that they will be connected to broadband. And in the vast majority of cases, they’re right. In a way he is absolutely right. This point slipped out of my mind. I have the jaunty cd still with me which was made almost at the time it was released. Every time I install it, I need to keep my computer switched on for a hour and a half to finish updating. So in effect the default CD is no longer worth passing around. Its better we talk about how we can make sure people get their hands on a fully featured / software loaded distro - a deriviative or a customized cd. The central idea into distributing CDs was not just to help the people who cannot download it. It was for 'promotion of Ubuntu here' (Or simply awareness). For that, customized CDs play a great role. Correct me if I am wrong, majority of 'regular computer users' don't know about existence of other operating systems, leave alone Ubuntu or even linux. Distrubuting just normal Ubuntu CDs written on a blank CD won't be any good because people don't know about it. And therefore why would they in their right minds be buying something so crucial to their systems without clarification or a presentation. So finally, we need something like a 'awareness drive' (This might not be the right word for it, but I hope I am clear) to promote Ubuntu and the Ubuntu India Community. [ubuntu-in] Canonical only to send free cd's to developers
http://www.workswithu.com/2009/11/18/who-deserves-free-ubuntu-cds-more/ This will make it harder for many people to get ubuntu. I have seen so many people who wouldn't download anything more than a 100MB because of money or speed. But from the beginning I did think that giving free CDs was outrageous! What could be the alternatives? Could we make ubuntu CDs together with printed CD covers (we could make a custom Ubuntu india CD cover)? The cost would vary accourding to the resources we could use: a CD is for Rs12 approx, and printing can be done from a shop or with a printer. These CDs could be distributed to local bookstores and shop. We could divide the management of this distrubution according to the area we live in. I think I remember reading that we could definitely sell custom Ubuntu CDs ( I don't think I remember correctly, please confirm). But if we could, we could use it wisely. I vote for non-profit. The difficult part would be making the shops agree. The other project we could undertake is either ( somehow ) getting a shipit like program within India itself. I don't know how will that be made possible. I am still to even get my own bank account. But just suggesting. PS: It was my small time dream that I would earn a lot, and help in advertising Ubuntu. -- Ashutosh Rishi Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in
Re: [ubuntu-in] Invitation to connect on LinkedIn
Its easier to just ignore and hit the delete than Ban the user and Demand apologies.. I agree with that. Though everyone should equally do their share. Ensuring to their maximum capability that the list remain spam free. Relating to an article I read about mailing list etiquettes: If a mail has been accidentally sent, its better to send an immediate reply to it saying sorry and thus closing that topic than letting others commenting. But ya, these should really be accidents ;). It might be a bit cheeky, but I would like to quote this (please) : *Ubuntu** is an ethic or humanist philosophy focusing on people's allegiances and relations with each other.* * * * * Ashutosh Rishi*,* *Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish* -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in

That would have been really great! Well that does depend on who is providing a pre-installed computer also. On an average basis its 'okay' to remove GIMP by default. Although, they did speak of a new section in Ubuntu Software Center for 'staff picks', basically to enlighten the new users to the popular softwares not shipped by default. Re: [ubuntu-in] Giving up the GIMP is a sign of Ubuntu's mainstream maturity - A rebuttal
GIMP was dropped also because it is not used by everyone. Only those who really need to do some serious designing would use it. For an average user, photo editing can be done in F-spot too. Its just like photoshop. If they want to slimdown the image size, they can remove openoffice, evolution, all the man pages, even gnome and they can come up with a mini distro for 50 MB like Damn small linux. But all these are the essential ones. For most people downloading is really out of question. They want it preinstalled and ready for use (Thats how windows became popular :( ). And on a side note, those man pages are really very very helpful. Re: [ubuntu-in] Interested in hearing about ser experiences about Karmic Koala (9.10) - WOW
Karmic is working great wonders in my mind. The day it came out, my motherboard got spoilt! And I am still waiting for a new one. In the meantime, I have burnt a CD-R, a DVD-R, and a CD-RW with karmic and waiting. Just to see how it looks, I convinced my father to install ubuntu on his laptop, and my friend. I may still not be in a stage to review how Karmic will work for me, but I have never been so exited for something. :) And, does Karmic really have so many hardware issues?? There were some pretty bad reviews written along with the awesome reviews.
