[Bug 214153] Re: [Hardy] sensors-applet not added to applet selection

So typical. You don't respond to the bug report for months and months,
then you ask me to test it with some pre-release version of the OS, and
if I don't, you close it. Why should I even bother reporting these
things?

Re: [Bug 220226] Re: Screen briefly appears after suspend despite lock

2009-10-04 Thread DaveAbrahams
I don't know. Switched to mac in part because of this dynamic: I go to
the trouble to report a bug; it gets confirmed, but nobody addresses
it so months or years later I am asked if it's present in some newer
version (or even a prerelease!) and the bug is marked incomplete.
Unless I'm willing to keep on top of the status of all the problems I
report in some bleeding-edge version, the bug gets no further
attention and lives on forever.

2009-05-14 Thread DaveAbrahams
Workaround: toward the end of the install the base system step, the
installer stops and asks which drivers I want to install. I drop into a
shell, then:

cd /target/tmp
wget
http://http.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/i/initramfs-tools/initramfs-tools_0.92o_all.deb
chroot /target/tmp bash
dpkg -i /tmp/initramfs-*.deb

The install completes thereafter.

[Bug 197209] Re: fglrx + compiz fusion won't resume[AMD Feature#7647] [EPR#260329]

2009-02-24 Thread DaveAbrahams
Bryce, are you claiming that with my stock ubuntu 2.6.27-11 kernel
(which postdates 2.6.27-9), I can remove all my hacks and suspend/resume
will work? If that doesn't turn out to be the case, then closing this
bug would be *wrong* because after all, the OP reported the problem
that's addressed by my hacks and not whatever AMD thinks is the same as
this. Unless the bug has gone away for me, making me open a new bug
with the same info seems backwards.

[Bug 323440] Re: DVD+R DL not recognized as blank media

2009-02-23 Thread DaveAbrahams
I've since reinstalled intrepid on that machine, as a minimal server
install (no X, for example). I installed dvd+rw-tools so I could run
this test again, and I can't reproduce the problem now. Given the
number of similar complaints around the web, I have no doubt that it's a
real issue, but I'm also sure it must be an interaction with some other
software I don't have installed anymore. If it ever comes back, I'll
reopen this one.

[Bug 305500] Re: Installation with RAID setup always results in kernel was unable to re-read partition table

2009-02-20 Thread DaveAbrahams
This is an old, old, old bug. It may have hidden for a few releases, but I
guess now it's back. Details from as far back as 2006 can be found here:
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.ubuntu.server/127
and a *patch* to fix it is here:
http://groups.google.com/group/linux.debian.bugs.dist/browse_frm/thread/9d640dd46c19d081/db0acb6616203668%23db0acb6616203668

According to old postings of mine that I dug up, I already reported this
bug here at launchpad, but I'm unable to find my report now.

[Bug 326728] [NEW] consolekit should depend on libpolkit or policykit

[Bug 220657] Re: reduce backlight brightness / dim display when idle

2009-02-05 Thread DaveAbrahams
Yes, it's still an issue.

The first piece of work to be done on the bug is to fix the
documentation:

* fill in the missing details about the intended behavior of this interface.
* explain what dimming really means
* Fix the screenshots

Once that's done, maybe we have a hope of seeing whether the
functionality conforms to the specification.

[Bug 84899] Re: SSH with GSSAPIAuthentication option on SSH servers are very slow

2009-01-28 Thread DaveAbrahams
I've reproduced the problem on: Intrepid Minimal CD Install + ssh

There's no apparent avahi installed or activated

In that configuration, -o GSSAPIAuthentication=no on the client
command line has no effect, nor does setting it in the server's
ssh_config file (though why that would change anything, I have no idea).
The only way to suppress the delay seems to be to put

UseDNS no

in the server's /etc/ssh/sshd_config

I think the duplicate status /may/ be wrong. That other bug has been

Although its status is currently new, there's no explanation why. It
is not entirely clear that it's the same bug and it's especially not
clear that the other bug is still considered to be an open issue,
although I can confirm that this problem still exists.

I can confirm that, having mapped Caps Lock to Control, my laptop

[Bug 316200] [NEW] System unusable on battery after incomplete shutdown

2009-01-11 Thread DaveAbrahams
Public bug reported:

As still happens reasonably often with Ubuntu, when my laptop locks up
and I am forced to power-cycle it, the system (by default) comes back in
an unusable state:

1. It skips fsck on startup because I'm on battery.
2. My root filesystem (JFS) is apparently detected as not having been cleanly
unmounted, so the system mounts it read-only
3. Naturally, X refuses to start, but worse
4. I can't even log in at a virtual terminal to fix things because... the
filesystem is read-only.

The only fix is to boot up in single-user mode, drop to a root shell
prompt, do

 #mount -o remount,rw /
 # fsck /

Then I can resume the normal boot process.

Apparently according to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/e2fsprogs/+bug/89752 a lot of
people thought that skipping fsck when not on AC power was a wonderful
idea, but it is the beginning of a perfect storm of hassle on my system.
The fsck, once I manage to get to a root shell, only takes a couple
seconds, and it would be infinitely better for me if that were done
automatically regardless of A/C power state. I don't know why people
use ext3 on laptops anyway; it takes forever to fsck
(http://www.sabi.co.uk/Notes/linuxFS.html#fsFeats).

So there are two serious problems here:

1. fsck is skipped
2. can't login if the root FS is mounted read-only

and a couple suggestions:

3. Ubuntu should probably not install ext3 by default on laptops :-)
4. The installer should probably partition the disk by default so that whatever
part of the disk that needs to be writable for login is probably writable even
in case of an unclean shutdown.

This is ubuntu 8.10

[Bug 151685] Re: Password dialog opens behind other windows

2009-01-02 Thread DaveAbrahams
This happens to me regularly, even with Intrepid. Can't we get some
attention on this one? It's often very confusing even for a non-normal
user. nm-applet sits there spinning as though it's trying to connect
when it's really waiting for me to confirm this hidden password dialog
with -- get this -- a network that's already in my list and the password
already filled out. Why does it bother with the dialog at all in that
case?

[Bug 209654] Re: workspace switcher colours are unclear

2008-12-29 Thread DaveAbrahams
I agree. Apparently the only clue I get is that the active window has a
white center instead of an orange one. But if the window is small, that
amounts to nothing (see enclosed). Furthermore, the indication doesn't
change until after I've stopped switching (at least with a compiz
desktop cube). There really ought to be a bright green highlight around
the edge of the active workspace or something. In fact, I don't care if
the switcher shows me anything about the windows in the workspaces --
it's too small to be useful. Just show me which is the active one,
please!!

[Bug 310833] [NEW] gnome-power-manager interface confusing (and undocumented)

2008-12-23 Thread DaveAbrahams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

I know there are at least several levels of display sleep (available
through xset) and the interface doesn't tell me which one(s) I'm going
to get. Is this the full power saving I really want, or some
intermediate state, or what? Also, the Set display brightness to:
sliders have an unclear effect. Just when does that brightness setting
take place? Is it part of g-p-m's notion of display sleep? What does
Dim display when idle do exactly? How long does the computer have to
be idle before dimming begins? Is the display supposed to undim when I
start using the computer again?

The answers to at least some of these questions should be self-evident
from looking at the UI, but they are not.

This is in Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10

gnome-power-manager:
  Installed: 2.24.0-0ubuntu8.1

Please see also https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/308815 and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-doc/+bug/310831
Also, note that http://www.shallowsky.com/linux/x-screen-blanking.html makes a
credible claim that screen power management should be handled by screensavers.

[Bug 197209] Re: fglrx + compiz fusion won't resume[AMD Feature#7647] [EPR#260329]

2008-12-22 Thread DaveAbrahams
Correction: it wasn't working at all

@schlehmil: I have no idea what made things work OOTB for you unless you
unless you were unintentionally using the open source driver rather than
fgrlx. Everything still failed in exactly the same way for me.

However, the good news is that the fix is the same: kill off compiz
before any VT switch takes place. The bad news is that the old scripts
don't work. I think this is why Hardy suspend stopped working for me
after a while also: pm-utils uses a new protocol for which the redefine
chvt hack no longer works. I think I may have picked that new version
of pm-utils up by enabling the backports repository under Hardy.

I am attaching two new files that work under intrepid; you should use
these instead of the earlier ones posted for Hardy. I'm also going to
delete some of the older versions of these files if the interface will
let me, just to reduce clutter.

[Bug 310822] [NEW] Should allow all displays to power down

2008-12-22 Thread DaveAbrahams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

[submitted at the suggestion of an ubuntu dev:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-
manager/+bug/308815/comments/4]

g-p-m should offer the ability to have the
monitor power down after a certain period of inactivity. Ideally it
would be possible to have the screensaver run for some period, for
entertainment purposes, but then shut off and power down the monitor
after a bit. LCD monitors come back almost instantly, so it isn't
nearly the liability that it was in the days of CRTs

[Bug 197209] Re: fglrx + compiz fusion won't resume[AMD Feature#7647] [EPR#260329]

2008-12-21 Thread DaveAbrahams
The current status of this bug for me in Intrepid is that without my
scripts, resume works the first time and then fails the second time.
The failure manifests itself by showing me a blank screen. If I wait
long enough, X is restarted automatically; it appears to be on vt8
instead of vt7.

Unfortunately, I've been unable to get my scripts to fix the problem.

Suspend and resume under metacity work just fine.

I'm attaching Xorg.1.log and Xorg.0.log, which cover the suspend cycle
in question (seems to be right on the boundary between them?). Also,
I'm seeing this in my syslog, for what that's worth:
