I don't know why you are getting APIC errors. I certainly doubt that b43 is causing them - it seems much more like a BIOS error that b43 is triggering. In the latest version of the kernel, there is a new module named hp-dmi that should handle your radio-enable/disable button; however, I have no way to test it. The new module will be in linux-2.6.27-3.4, which has not yet hit the repositories. When it does, install it. After rebooting, you will need to check that hp-dmi appears in your lsmod listing. If not, you will need a 'sudo modprobe hp-dmi' command. It is likely that the version of b43legacy loaded with 2.6.27-3.4 will have a bug that keeps the rate at 1 Mbs, but the fix is in the pipeline. The change we made in your SPROM disabled the Bluetooth coexistence function in your firmware. If you use Bluetooth, there will be interference in the 2.4 GHz band. Because you had to rewrite the firmware files on the disk, I would like you to do the following: 1. Write the original SPROM contents back to the device and verify that the failure returns. 2. If is does not, let me know. If it does, try this SPROM contents 0140FA123C10204300800200021000189000A44BFB5D3130AA14C8FA9FFE4C003E00497A02FF454410FF0213 3. [Bug 182716] Re: bcm4306, bcm4309, bcm4311, bcm4312 with b43 : Authentication with AP doesn't work.
The problem is well known and is due to Broadcom's SPROM miscoding for most, if not all, PCI versions of the BCM4306 and at least one PCI version of the BCM4318. The difficulty is with Bluetooth coexistence, thus we cannot apply the fix to _ALL_ cards without testing a representative of each card group. The problem slipped through the bcm43xx team because none of us had the necessary hardware. The patches for all _KNOWN_ devices with this problem have been accepted into the mainline kernel (2.6.27-rc4), sent to Ubuntu, and merged by them into the code base for both Hardy and Intrepid. I would expect the fix to be in the next kernel version. As I'm not affiliated with Ubuntu, I have no idea when that might be. The specific cards that are addressed by the patches are as follows (the numbers in parentheses are the vendor, device, subvendor and subvendor codes that show up in the first two lines of the 'lspci -nnv' output for the wireless interface.): ASUS WL-138G V2(4314, 4318, 1043, 100F) DELL DW1350 (4314, 4320, 1028, 0003) LINKSYS(4314, 4320, 1737, 0013) LINKSYS(4314, 4320, 1737, 0014) LINKSYS(4314, 4320, 1737, 0015) I have been treating the cases individually during the process of card identification, but there is a workaround. To use it, you need to obtain the SPROM utility from the bcm43xx tools at http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#relatedtools. To use this tool, you will need packages containing git, make, gcc, and glibc. The specific fix is to clear bit 1 of the low-order board flags. In most of the boards listed above, the current contents are 0x000D, which must be changed to 0x000C. When fixed, the kernel does this dynamically when starting, but a permanent change is equally effective. Caution must be taken to observe the current contents before changing them! If you blindly write 0x000C into the board flags, you may kill your card! If you have a card with this problem _AND_ numbers different from the above list, I would like to know about it so that future kernels will be fixed. I hope this answers your questions. Besides the MAC address, there are other parameters in the SPROM where Broadcom accounts for the specific amplifiers and radio of a device. When you wrote the SPROM for board A into board B, these were also overwritten. Fortunately, there are not many of these. The list includes the antenna gain, the pa0bx parameters, the max power out, and the idle TSSI target. I am assuming that you do not have a copy of the original contents of the SPROM for board B. I have saved copies of all the boards that have been rewritten All of them have 0x3C for the maximum power out, and 0x3E for the idle TSSI target, thus I think we can rule out those parameters. I do see only two different sets of parameters for the pa0bx parameters as follows: Board pa0b0 pa0b1 pa0b2 Your A 0x12A00xFB770xFEAC Other 0x 119A 0xFB930xFEA5 The following SPROM content has the MAC of your board B and the other pa0bx values. The firmware can be copied from computer to computer. Once the modified SPROM is loaded, you don't ever need to do it again. I would try channel 1 on your AP. Interference in the 2.4 GHz band doesn't always come from other wifi devices. Any number of household devices can interfere. You can always check for hardware problems by swapping the cards. I don't think that is a b43 problem. [Bug 182716] Re: bcm4306, bcm4309, bcm4311, bcm4312 with b43 : Authentication with AP doesn't work.
The bug reported in 257020 _IS_ the bug here for the BCM4306 and most of the problems in this thread. You will find b43 to be much better than bcm43xx for a couple of reasons. First of all, the softmac used by bcm43xx never was any good - the mac80211, which is used by b43, is much better. Secondly, development on bcm43xx ceased about 18 months ago. The sprom entry in the /sys tree is provided by ssb and will not be present when ndiswrapper is running. Note: I am not aware of any BCM4312 cards with an SPROM coding error. Once the firmware is properly installed _AND_ the rfkill switch is properly set to allow the radio to come on, all of them just work. I would be most interested in the output of 'dmesg | grep b43' for the BCM4312. One thing I didn't make clear. The revised SPROM should have been applied to only one card. The reason is that the MAC address is also encoded in the SPROM. You now have two cards with the same MAC address - a no-no. Please send me the MAC address for the second card if you can find it, and I'll encode that in a revised SPROM contents. The poor performance of the early BCM4306 units - the ones that use b43legacy - is known to us. Those models have the least work done by the firmware, and the most by the host cpu. Despite what everybody says, b43 does work. What b43 does that bcm43xx does not do is look at the state of the radio-kill switch. When you boot the system, what output is produced by the command dmesg | grep b43 What sort of hardware does your Dell computer have to control the radio? FYI, the driver that is loaded in response to the PCI ID of the BCM4306 is ssb. Based on the revision level of internal parts, ssb then loads b43 or b43legacy. The bug is fixed in the updated kernels; however, the CD has not been updated. To install from the current CD, you need to do the following: 1. Boot the CD, choose your language, and select install. Next press F6 and insert break=top into the options line. I'm not sure if it was necessary, but I put it ahead of the two minus signs at the end. 2. At the (initramfs) prompt, type the following lines: echo blacklist ssb /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist exit 3. Installation will proceed. Once it completes, reboot the computer with the CD in the drive. I know this is against the on-screen instructions, but we need to change a file on the new installation. This time, use the Try Ubuntu with ... option. 4. Once the system is up and running, open a console, and enter the following commands: sudo -s mount -t ext3 /dev/sda1 /mnt echo blacklist ssb /mnt/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist unmount /mnt echo Note: The /sda1 in the second line above should be replaced with the correct device and partition for / on your system. If you get it wrong, either the mount or the echo commands will fail. 6. You will now be able to reboot normally without the system hanging. After you have updated the kernel (2.6.24-17 or later), you should install the b43legacy firmware and edit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist to remove the line that blacklists ssb. [Bug 223599] Re: Broadcom BCM4312 rev 02 HPCompaq 6720s
Ian, There are numerous improvements in b43 since 2.6.24, but one of the major advances have been in mac80211's speed-setting algorithm. To get those changes you would need the 2.6.25 kernel, or the kernels from the mainline or wireless-testing git trees. They are too intrusive for a simple patch. As a work-around, use the command 'sudo iwconfig wlan0 rate 24M'. Adjust the wlan0 as needed for your system. You can test that speed with a 'sudo ping -f your router's address'. If you see a lot of dots, that rate is too fast, but that shouldn't happen. If 24M works as expected, increase the rate by using 36M, 48M, or 54M. [Bug 222343] Re: b43 driver ignores BCM94311, regression
The b43-pci-bridge driver is a wedge between ssb and the drivers b43 and b43legacy. It is the part of the system that decides if your bcm43xx hardware needs the new b43 driver, or b43legacy that handles older hardware. Your system was not loading b43 because the patch that allowed the system to recognize that device was reverted in the middle of the Hardy testing process due to a report that it broke a BCM4312 device. A new patch that should enable your device and not break the 4312 has been submitted to the Ubuntu Kernel Team. -- b43 driver ignores BCM94311, regression https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/222343 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

A patch to implement the BCM4312 rev 2 and BCM4311 rev 2 cards has been submitted to the Ubuntu Kernel Team. This patch was previously included in early versions of the Hardy kernel, but was reverted due to reported difficulties with a BCM4312 rev 1 card. [Bug 218763] Re: ssb interferes with ndiswrapper (bcm4311, bcm4318)
If you want to use ndiswrapper with a BCM43xx card with Hardy, you _MUST_ blacklist ssb. The reason is that ssb owns the BCM43xx PCI ID's. It then uses internal information in the card to decide whether to load b43 or b43legacy depending on the age of the equipment. With the bcm43xx driver, the ssb driver was built in, not separate. -- ssb interferes with ndiswrapper (bcm4311, bcm4318) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/218763 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 214917] Re: Module b44 interfering with ndiswrapper upon startup
The b43 and b44 drivers both utilize the ssb driver. As you noticed, if ssb loads, then it owns the bcm43xx PCI Id's and ndiswrapper will not load. If you want to use b44 for eth0 and ndiswrapper for the wireless interface, then you need to blacklist ssb and bcm43xx. YTou will then need the modprobe b44 in /etc/rc.local. -- Module b44 interfering with ndiswrapper upon startup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/214917 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
