During the Lucid development cycle (ending with the Lucid release) the Italian LoCo Team have been doing some great work contributing to Ubuntu and I wanted to bring that to the UK. The task is to test the Ubuntu ISO (CD) images at certain points through the cycle. This is a surprisingly easy thing to do, and with a few volunteers and bit of co-ordination it's possible to test all the various flavours and architectures and report bugs to the QA team. What the Italian LoCo have done is co-ordinate the effort to ensure a spread of testers across Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu and other flavours, and 32-bit and 64-bit architectures. There's no single person who has to test every single ISO, and some people only test one of them. There are points in the cycle (Alpha/Beta releases for example) where more effort is needed, so having multiple people testing the same ISO gives some redundancy as well as ensuring the images are well tested. What you'd need is a computer and a relatively decent internet connection which you could use to download one or more ISO images. Anyone fancy helping out with this? If so just say so here, and we can work out the details when I get back from UDS. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Nvidia driver resolution support
Hi, this seems to be an old and very waring issue that im suffering from. I'm running Nvidia 4400 SE. In the earlier version of Ubuntu 8.04 the setting worked fine, but when the later version came out every thing changed and the screen res was to put it mildlycrap. there were plenty of work around but in the end it was the same. The card and driver have been excellent and very flexible so far. They've been perfectly happy runnning TwinView across initially a 1680x1050 and 1280x1024 pair, and currently 1920x1200 and 1280x1024. I don't think your card will have a problem. We (at The Open Learning Centre) use Samsung 2343BW monitors that are 2048x1152 with no problems. even on the inbuilt intel graphics chipsets that come with atom boards you can get Compiz running just fine. My desktop has an Nvidia 9500GT and that is fine too. HTH Alan Thanks to you both (Gord, Alan) for the response. It sounds encouraging. The main reason I asked is that the resolution wasn't listed as available in the drop-down list in the nvidia-settings app. I wondered if that list was simply the native resolution of my current monitor (1900x1200) together with all standard resolutions below it -- rather than being a definitive list of supported res. Is it worth trying one of those to replace Firefox? I like Firefox, but not its lack of ability to use Flash properly in Linux. David King Jai Harrison wrote: Hey everyone, I've been experiencing some issues with Firefox lately (freezing during general use, lagging during Flash video playback, etc.). So I looked into it and it appears that the binary provided in Ubuntu for Firefox doesn't use some special compiler/compile method that is used on the Windows binaries. Next I found Swiftfox but because it is proprietary software I continued to search the web until I came across Swiftweasel (which is AFAIK the same thing but without the Firefox branding). Unfortunately the latest *.deb provided is for version 3.0.3 (there have been numerous security patches since then) and the tar.gz along with instructions for 3.0.8 does not appear to work on Ubuntu (I've tried it). So I've been using Swiftweasel 3.0.3 lately and didn't notice much difference which led me to believe that my Firefox profile might have been damaged by an extension or simply have gotten crowded over the years. Thus I created a new profile but when trying to install Google Gears in Swiftweasel it wouldn't acknowledge installation on any Gears enabled websites. So I copied my profile over to Firefox and got Gears to work in that now leaving me running a newish profile under Firefox with a few questions. 1) How much better will the performance be from Swiftweasel? Is it worth migrating this profile back to the browser with the understanding that Gears will probably work now it's been installed? As such should I spend further time trying to get the Firefox 3.0.8 tar.gz to work in Ubuntu or just settle for 3.0.3 knowing there is exposed security flaws in it? 2) How come Firefox is so slow on GNU/Linux anyway? I've been looking at threads on the Ubuntu forums where people go as far as to say that Firefox is as much as twice as fast on Windows XP. Surely someone inside Canonical will compile Firefox using the same compiling technique as used with Windows if that is what's causing the problem. Otherwise how come that a FOSS browser is slower on the most open platform OS when the majority of its users on said platform are developers? I have an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU (2MB Cache) T5750 @ 2.00GHz along with 2GB of RAM (over half of which isn't being used). This doesn't seem to be a question of insufficient hardware to me. Re: [ubuntu-uk] HELP: How to install the Ubuntu in one of the existing partition in a hard disk?
Hi Liam, ok it was just that i was thinking when i did it that i had to type the size of hard drive space i needed for Ubuntu. From memory there was a default setting it offered and then you could then change it to whatever you wanted. There is another company that going down the same road as Microsoft and that Apple they have started doing the same thing. Being secretive and in some case anti-competitive. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Help get Windows out of schools
Your cause is honorable however for Linux to turn the trend. you must first prove to those schools that Linux is better and that it can do things far better than windows. In the Linux community there has to be a leap in ideas where when the user logs on he/she is presented, ready to use icons on the desktop, like open office and the if the user places their mouse over the top the icon gets larger. In the background the programs are already loaded and when clicked the package opens in less then 2 seconds. When the OS is first loaded its check the hardware and looks for the drivers. it then displays them to the user to confirm these driver are ready for download. These are just some of the ideas that would make Linux more sellable to user to choose what OS their looking for. On Sun, Feb 8, 2009 at 8:56 PM, Vinothan Shankar neversaymon...@googlemail.com wrote: I've created a petition to the Prime Minister to make the primary OS in schools free and open source - it can be found at http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/nonMSschools.
