[Bug 297380] [NEW] KAddressBook exports unusable vCard files
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kaddressbook KAddressBook exports unusable vCard files due to these two upstream bugs: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=68350 (UTF-8 strings corruption upon vCard export) http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=172764 (Vcard export: Windows newlines) The first issue (UTF-8 strings corruption upon vCard export) is actually allowed by the vCard spec, however, no vCard-compliant device that I could test would parse these files properly (Nokia E71, Dell Axim x50v, MS Outlook 2003). The second issue (Vcard export: Windows newlines) is in fact making the files not compliant with the vCard spec, however, it was closed as WONTFIX because it is a Qt bug and not a KDE bug. I cannot file bugs with Qt as I am not a Trolltech developer. This is a serious issue for an otherwise very usable PIM application. I hope that Ubuntu could either help solve the upstream bugs or pressure upstream to resolve the issues themselves. Thanks! ** Affects: kdepim (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- KAddressBook exports unusable vCard files https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/297380 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to kdepim in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs
[Bug 296378] [NEW] Regression: Kate in KDE 4 cannot read cp1255 text.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kate I have a text file created on MS Windows with Hebrew text. In KDE 3.x when I open the file in Kate I get Gibberish as Kate assumes UTF-8 text. However, I can manually change the encoding to cp1255 and then Kate displays the file just fine. In KDE 4.1 when I open the file in Kate I get the same Gibberish, however, selecting cp1255 does not change the way that Kate displays the file. I still get Gibberish. Note that services such as http://gibberish.co.il cannot translate the Gibberish that Kate produces as all the characters are identical. [Bug 289440] Re: Show Keyboard Status indicator in KDE4
Meta-kde is not a bug dumping place. I never thought that it was, but in the upstream bug, at BKO, the component is KDE and not something more specific. That means: if the plasmoid is backportable we might ship it via our KDE 4 PPA right away, if it is not we have no other choice than wait for 4.2.0 and then deploy it through mentioned PPA. Adding this kind of functionality this close to relase is no option, especially since KDE didn't do quality control yet (the reason it is in the playground part of KDE). Thanks, Harold, I had logged off IRC by that time (apparently right before). I know that this cannot be added to the release of 8.10, but a PPA would be great. That's why I mentioned backporting as well. One thing: I would like to see this marked not as a wish, but as an accessibility issue. Marking it as a wish makes it seem unimportant, but for people with manual disabilities this is a showstopper. -- Show Keyboard Status indicator in KDE4 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/289440 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I can confirm that this bug is still present in the Kubuntu 8.10 beta version. I was wrong, I read AAC as AMR because I sat at the computer when I should have been sleeping! They don't know very much about software licensing, and simply slapped a generic CYA license on the software without giving it a second thought. [Bug 93849] Re: ffmpeg does not have AMR audio support
My field is Mechanical Engineering, not CS. And let there be no mistake, I very much respect the people who work on the packages and I appreciate their efforts. However, this bug report requests an extremely important feature for ffmpeg and it is being denied (rightly) because of licensing issues. There are two ways to fix this: 1) Rewrite the AMR codecs from scratch under a FOSS license. 2) Relicense the existing AMR codecs. Both approaches are currently under development. This bug cannot be fixed TODAY, but that does not invalidate it. The day will come when one or both of the solutions will come to fruitation, and that day this bug can be fixed. [Bug 258609] Re: No distinctive border in KDE4 windows
This is not a dupe of bug #226437, which I read before posting. Bug #226437 complains that the default Oxygen style makes it hard to tell active/inactive windows apart. This bug complains that the lack of a distinctive (bright or wide) border surrounding the active window makes it difficult to determine which area of the screen belong to the active window. In the current default style, one must hunt for the stripes (which are very difficult to see on sub-quality monitors or those of us with poor eyesight) and then try to figure out how wide they are and then how much of the screen below belongs to that window. There is almost no visual seperation between the currently active window and a window below it. See attached screenshot. I agree that this is a fault of the Oxygen style. [Bug 244228] [NEW] Bidi text: no method for right- and left- aligning text in KDE text boxes
Public bug reported: Users of Right-To-Left languages such as Arabic, Hebrew, and Farsi often need to either right- or left- align the text in text fields. However, KDE4 applications do not support the ability to switch the text direction. Most KDE applications simply left align everything (kate, for instance). Others (such as Basket) right- or left- align based on the first letter of text fields. Still other apps (Kaddressbook, for instance) right- or left- align each line of text separately based upon the first letter of that line. Mozilla applications (Firefox, Thunderbird) allow the user to select RTL or LTR with a keyboard shortcut (Ctrl-Alt-X). KDE needs a similar facility for for switching text alignment and directionality, which would be consistent across KDE apps. Implementing Ctrl-Alt-X or another shortcut (preferably configurable) is necessary. Note that in Mozilla apps text directionality is switched together, and correctly so, with text alignment when using this shortcut. This bug probably depends on an upstream Qt bug: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=163459 However, from what I gather from other BiDi users, neither KDE nor Trolltech are working on this. So I hope that Ubuntu can pressure Trolltech to fix this, otherwise all Arabic, Hebrew, and Farsi users will not be able to move to KDE4 comfortably. [Bug 240770] Re: Multiple package managers hurting Linux adoption
I agree that the major problem is dependencies. In fact, in this age with high-speed internet and cheap disk space, I think that many packages go too far with their dependencies. I would very much like to see an additional 10 50k libraries (half a meg) added to a download than have to jump through hoops each time I want to install a program, and possibly break other programs along the way. -- Multiple package managers hurting Linux adoption https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/240770 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 240770] [NEW] Multiple package managers hurting Linux adoption
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: apt This is not an Ubuntu-specific bug, but rather an issue that the Ubuntu community is rather well suited to address. Many software developers (non-FOSS) are able to release Linux code, however are unwilling to compile for 3-5 package managers. Thus, they release no Linux code at all. See a very relevant /. comment on the subject: http://tech.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=586545cid=23828347 Note that Skype has 8 download options for their Linux version. Collaboration regarding software packaging, especially with distros currently using non-deb packaging, would not only benefit the developer and encourage him to release Linux code, but would also benefit the user who would not have to choose from 8 different packages. For you and me this is an obvious choice, but not for the end user. If the goal of Ubuntu (as per bug#1 it is) is to overtake Windows as the most popular consumer OS, then the issue of collaboration with competing packaging methods must be addressed. ** Affects: apt (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Multiple package managers hurting Linux adoption https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/240770 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 232046] Re: Firefox does not know what to do with downloaded files
Yes, I am using Kubuntu 8.04. I do have firefox-gnome-support installed, however. Another usage example: When I download a PDF file, Firefox asks whether to open the file with KPDF (my default PDF viewer) or to save the file. If I save the file, then right-click the file in the Download Manager, Firefox pops up a dialog box telling me that I need an external application to open the file and asks me to pick one. I must pick the file with the GTK file picker, which starts in $HOME. -- Firefox does not know what to do with downloaded files https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/232046 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 232046] [NEW] Firefox does not know what to do with downloaded files
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: firefox When Firefox encounters a filetype that it is unfamiliar with, the user is presented the file picker dialog box, to select a program to open the file with. By default, the file selector starts with the user's home directory. This confuses new users, who are expecting a list of installed programs to choose from. Many users do not know that they must navigate to /usr/bin/ and even if they know that much, they likely do not know the name of the executable they need. I recommend that when Firefox encounters a new file type, the user be presented with the same dialog box that is presented when choosing Open With from a file's context menu, with a list of available programs. ** Affects: firefox (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Firefox does not know what to do with downloaded files https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/232046 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
