[Bug 297380] [NEW] KAddressBook exports unusable vCard files

2008-11-12 Thread dotancohen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kaddressbook

KAddressBook exports unusable vCard files due to these two upstream bugs:
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=68350 (UTF-8 strings corruption upon vCard
export)
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=172764 (Vcard export: Windows newlines)

The first issue (UTF-8 strings corruption upon vCard export) is actually
allowed by the vCard spec, however, no vCard-compliant device that I
could test would parse these files properly (Nokia E71, Dell Axim x50v,
MS Outlook 2003). The second issue (Vcard export: Windows newlines) is
in fact making the files not compliant with the vCard spec, however, it
was closed as WONTFIX because it is a Qt bug and not a KDE bug. I cannot
file bugs with Qt as I am not a Trolltech developer.

This is a serious issue for an otherwise very usable PIM application. I
hope that Ubuntu could either help solve the upstream bugs or pressure
upstream to resolve the issues themselves. Thanks!

[Bug 296378] [NEW] Regression: Kate in KDE 4 cannot read cp1255 text.

2008-11-10 Thread dotancohen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kate

I have a text file created on MS Windows with Hebrew text. In KDE 3.x
when I open the file in Kate I get Gibberish as Kate assumes UTF-8 text.
However, I can manually change the encoding to cp1255 and then Kate
displays the file just fine.

In KDE 4.1 when I open the file in Kate I get the same Gibberish,
however, selecting cp1255 does not change the way that Kate displays the
file. I still get Gibberish.

Note that services such as http://gibberish.co.il cannot translate the
Gibberish that Kate produces as all the characters are identical. So
this could even be considered a dataloss situation.

[Bug 296434] [NEW] Remote files via SSH displayed as Gibberish

2008-11-10 Thread dotancohen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: konqueror

Konqueror seems to assume ISO-8859-1 for all remote connections via SSH. This
results in Gibberish for users of non-Latin languages. As every Linux distro
that I have tested in the past three years defaults to UTF-8 for every locale,
Konqueror should either:
1) Assume UTF-8
2) Assume that whatever is used locally (check system locale) is used remotely.
3) Query the remote server for locale (simply run locale upon connecting via
SSH). This is probably not possible for FTP connections.

[Bug 281834] Re: KDE File Chooser for all GTK apps

The link that usr provided (KGtk) is, by it's own description, a quick-
and-dirty LD_PRELOAD hack that allows some Gtk applications to use KDE's
file dialogs when run under KDE. Therefore I agree that KGtk is a great
place to start from, but more work needs to be done. Also, it should be
included in Kubuntu by default.

[Bug 191472] Re: Wrong timestamp on files copied over SSH

2008-11-10 Thread dotancohen
I can confirm that the behaviour of Konqueror in KDE 4.1 in Kubuntu 8.10
is the same as described in the first post of this thread. Files copied
via SSH in Konqueror from a remote machine to the local machine retain
their original creation dates. Files copied via SSH in Konqueror from
the local machine to a remote machine have their creation dates set as
today.

This is a serious issue when working with files such as photographs with
no exif information, as the date can be critical in certain
applications. This could be considered a dataloss issue in those cases.

I do not have a test system set up at the moment, but when I filed the

std.ics file that I manually copied from ~/.kde/share/apps/korganizer on

think that there should have been a conflict of timezones. The std.ics
file does not include timezone information for events.

[Bug 280772] Re: kontact crashed with SIGSEGV

2008-10-26 Thread dotancohen
Could you give us some idea what you were doing immediately prior
to the crash. For example did it occur when you first started the
application or just after a reboot.

It happens when I start the application, both after a reboot and after
the system has been running for some time.

Most importantly, is the crash reproducible?

Yes, but inconsistently. Sometimes it crashes, sometimes it does not.

If you can reproduce the crash please install the package kdepim-dbg
 then induce the crash.

This will take some time as that was on a test system that has been
reformatted already and is in use. But I will try to put a priority on
it in the coming weeks.

OT: When replying, should I leave the bug as Incomplete or change it's
Status? To what should I change it (New, Confirmed, other)? Thanks.

A very serious accessibility issue has been addressed in KDE Trunk:
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=165402

The issue has been resolved in KDE SVN commit 876002. Please backport
this to 8.04 and 8.10 so that users with manual disabilities can upgrade
to KDE 4.x. Thank you.

[Bug 289440] Re: Show Keyboard Status indicator in KDE4

2008-10-26 Thread dotancohen
Meta-kde is not a bug dumping place.

I never thought that it was, but in the upstream bug, at BKO, the
component is KDE and not something more specific.

That means: if the plasmoid is backportable we might ship it via our KDE 4 PPA
right away, if it is not we have no other choice than wait for 4.2.0 and then
 deploy
 it through mentioned PPA.
Adding this kind of functionality this close to relase is no option,
 especially since
KDE didn't do quality control yet (the reason it is in the playground part of
 KDE).

Thanks, Harold, I had logged off IRC by that time (apparently right
before). I know that this cannot be added to the release of 8.10, but a
PPA would be great. That's why I mentioned backporting as well.

One thing: I would like to see this marked not as a wish, but as an
accessibility issue. Marking it as a wish makes it seem unimportant, but
for people with manual disabilities this is a showstopper.

[Bug 150333] Re: Kubuntu does not have the same magic than Ubuntu

2008-10-19 Thread dotancohen
I think that what usr is trying to express is that Fedora with KDE works
as well as Fedora with Gnome. Actually, in my own opinion with the
distro it works better. Same for Mandriva, Suse, and most other distros.
The system is more polished and the system management tools are better
integrated. In contract, Kubuntu feels like KDE slapped onto a Gnome
system.

That said, I agree that the word Fedora should be removed from
Affects. How did it get there in the first place?

[Bug 282954] [NEW] Wish: Quiet installation option

2008-10-13 Thread dotancohen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

I often test new systems (alphas, betas, mockups) when the house is
asleep. Therefore, it is essential to me that the system not beep or be
otherwise noisy. I propose an option in the Advanced dialog (at the end
of the installation wizard) for disabling the PC Speaker and desktop

at the moment, so clutter is not a worry.

[Bug 258613] Re: Korganizer: cannot move recurring items' day, only hour.

2008-10-09 Thread dotancohen
I can confirm that this bug is still present in the Kubuntu 8.10 beta version.
However, I have discovered a new detail:
The bug only occurs on events in an imported calendar (actually imported from
KDE 3.x). New events created in KDE 4.x function correctly.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Import calendar from KDE 3.x that includes recurring events. Import as a new
calendar (not a merge).
2) Drag a recurring event to a new time / date and select All occurrences.
3)
4) Profit!

I have used the the KDE4 System Settings to install a language, but even
after a reboot I still cannot add the language to the list of available

to be an Ubuntu-specific issue.

Note that despite the similar summaries, this is not a dupe of bug

[Bug 93849] Re: ffmpeg does not have AMR audio support

How does one configure bug blocking in Launchpad? Please mark this bug
as blocking Bug #1. Today I lost a user from Ubuntu 8.04 to Windows XP
Home because she does not want to enable 'questionable' repos

dual booting because of this issue alone, and today she decided that it
is too annoying to boot into a separate OS just to play files from the

I was wrong, I read AAC as AMR because I sat at the computer when I
should have been sleeping!

In any case I have already heard back from the 3GPP and there seems to
be little in the way of getting the native AMR codec opened up. They
don't know very much about software licensing, and simply slapped a
generic CYA license on the software without giving it a second thought.
If there is someone who can make a strong point from a business
perspective about why the software licensed should be changed, I would
appreciate if they would contact me in private mail to assist me in
convincing them.

Thanks.

[Bug 93849] Re: ffmpeg does not have AMR audio support

2008-09-15 Thread dotancohen
My field is Mechanical Engineering, not CS. And let there be no mistake,
I very much respect the people who work on the packages and I appreciate
their efforts.

However, this bug report requests an extremely important feature for ffmpeg and
it is being denied (rightly) because of licensing issues. There are two ways to
fix this:
1) Rewrite the AMR codecs from scratch under a FOSS license.
2) Relicense the existing AMR codecs.

Both approaches are currently under development. This bug cannot be
fixed TODAY, but that does not invalidate it. The day will come when one
or both of the solutions will come to fruitation, and that day this bug
can be fixed. It should remain open until then.

[Bug 258609] Re: No distinctive border in KDE4 windows

2008-08-17 Thread dotancohen
This is not a dupe of bug #226437, which I read before posting. Bug
#226437 complains that the default Oxygen style makes it hard to tell
active/inactive windows apart. This bug complains that the lack of a
distinctive (bright or wide) border surrounding the active window makes
it difficult to determine which area of the screen belong to the active
window.

In the current default style, one must hunt for the stripes (which are
very difficult to see on sub-quality monitors or those of us with poor
eyesight) and then try to figure out how wide they are and then how much
of the screen below belongs to that window. There is almost no visual
seperation between the currently active window and a window below it.
See attached screenshot.

I agree that this is a fault of the Oxygen style. Should I thus file
this bug with KDE?

[Bug 258604] [NEW] UTF-8 characters not displaying in Dolphin

2008-08-16 Thread dotancohen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dolphin-kde4

Dolphin displays ??? (question marks) instead of UTF-8 characters in
files.

To reproduce:
1) Boot KDE 3.5.9 (Kubuntu 8.04 with UTF-8 locale) and create file with Hebrew
characters in filename via Konqueror.
2) Move file to portable USB flash drive via Konqueror.
3) Boot KDE 4.1 (Kubuntu 8.10 a3 with UTF-8 locale) and open USB flash drive

What happens:
The filenames consist of question marks instead of Hebrew characters.

What I expected to happen:
I expected the filenames to remain with Hebrew characters.

[Bug 258611] [NEW] Korganizer: Terrible delay in mouse action on calendar

2008-08-16 Thread dotancohen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-kde4

When the user runs the scrollwheel or clicks on the calander, the main
window takes a full second to respond, and the calendar view takes
another second to update itself. For instance, the user clicks on a
specific date. After one second delay the date's details appear in the
main window, and one second later the calendar changes to show the new
date selected. I have not seen these delays using the official KDE 4.1
builds, only from the Ubuntu repos.

Kontact v1.3

Note that this is in a Dual-core, 2GHz system that I use to triage bugs
for KDE and KDEPIM. I have not experienced this delay in any

[Bug 244228] [NEW] Bidi text: no method for right- and left- aligning text in KDE text boxes

2008-06-30 Thread dotancohen
Public bug reported:

Users of Right-To-Left languages such as Arabic, Hebrew, and Farsi often
need to either right- or left- align the text in text fields. However,
KDE4 applications do not support the ability to switch the text
direction. Most KDE applications simply left align everything (kate, for
instance). Others (such as Basket) right- or left- align based on the
first letter of text fields. Still other apps (Kaddressbook, for
instance) right- or left- align each line of text separately based upon
the first letter of that line.

Mozilla applications (Firefox, Thunderbird) allow the user to select RTL
or LTR with a keyboard shortcut (Ctrl-Alt-X). KDE needs a similar
facility for for switching text alignment and directionality, which
would be consistent across KDE apps. Implementing Ctrl-Alt-X or another
shortcut (preferably configurable) is necessary. Note that in Mozilla
apps text directionality is switched together, and correctly so, with
text alignment when using this shortcut.

This bug probably depends on an upstream Qt bug:
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=163459
However, from what I gather from other BiDi users, neither KDE nor Trolltech
are working on this. So I hope that Ubuntu can pressure Trolltech to fix this,
otherwise all Arabic, Hebrew, and Farsi users will not be able to move to KDE4
comfortably.

Thanks.

[Bug 243818] [NEW] Install folderview widget as default in KDE 4

The folderview widget should be installed as default in KDE4. Users
expect that files in the ~/Desktop will appear, naturally, on their
desktop. The ability to add Widgets and such is nice, but as default it
should not change such fundamental behaviour and user expectations.

In fact, the KDE developers actually expect this to be the default:

[Bug 240770] Re: Multiple package managers hurting Linux adoption

2008-06-18 Thread dotancohen
I agree that the major problem is dependencies. In fact, in this age
with high-speed internet and cheap disk space, I think that many
packages go too far with their dependencies. I would very much like to
see an additional 10 50k libraries (half a meg) added to a download than
have to jump through hoops each time I want to install a program, and
possibly break other programs along the way.

[Bug 240770] [NEW] Multiple package managers hurting Linux adoption

2008-06-17 Thread dotancohen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt

This is not an Ubuntu-specific bug, but rather an issue that the Ubuntu
community is rather well suited to address. Many software developers (non-FOSS)
are able to release Linux code, however are unwilling to compile for 3-5
package managers. Thus, they release no Linux code at all. See a very relevant
/. comment on the subject:
http://tech.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=586545cid=23828347

Note that Skype has 8 download options for their Linux version.
Collaboration regarding software packaging, especially with distros
currently using non-deb packaging, would not only benefit the developer
and encourage him to release Linux code, but would also benefit the user
who would not have to choose from 8 different packages. For you and me
this is an obvious choice, but not for the end user. If the goal of
Ubuntu (as per bug#1 it is) is to overtake Windows as the most popular
consumer OS, then the issue of collaboration with competing packaging
methods must be addressed.

[Bug 232046] Re: Firefox does not know what to do with downloaded files

2008-06-15 Thread dotancohen
Yes, I am using Kubuntu 8.04. I do have firefox-gnome-support installed,
however.

Another usage example:
When I download a PDF file, Firefox asks whether to open the file with KPDF (my
default PDF viewer) or to save the file. If I save the file, then right-click
the file in the Download Manager, Firefox pops up a dialog box telling me that
I need an external application to open the file and asks me to pick one. I must
pick the file with the GTK file picker, which starts in $HOME.

[Bug 232046] [NEW] Firefox does not know what to do with downloaded files

2008-05-19 Thread dotancohen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

When Firefox encounters a filetype that it is unfamiliar with, the user
is presented the file picker dialog box, to select a program to open the
file with. By default, the file selector starts with the user's home
directory. This confuses new users, who are expecting a list of
installed programs to choose from. Many users do not know that they must
navigate to /usr/bin/ and even if they know that much, they likely do

Firefox encounters a new file type, the user be presented with the same
dialog box that is presented when choosing Open With from a file's
context menu, with a list of available programs.

[Bug 231508] [NEW] Variable-width fonts make I and l hard to distinguish

2008-05-17 Thread dotancohen
Public bug reported:

In the variable width fonts supplied with Debian and Ubuntu it is very
hard to distinguish I (uppercase eye) from l (lowercase el). I propose
that the uppercase eye have bars along the top and bottom edge in
default UI fonts.

[Bug 225231] [NEW] vim should not be aliased to vim-tiny

2008-05-01 Thread dotancohen
Public bug reported:

VIM-tiny does not support many of the features of VIM, so aliasing vim
to vim-tiny is wrong. VIM users open VIM-tiny and do not understand why
things are not working as planned. Therefore vim should be aliased to a
file that explains that only vim-tiny is installed, explains the missing
features, and explains that vim-tiny cannot open certain documents (such
as the tutor file). Only then should the option to alias be made.

[Bug 223384] Re: Cannot enable DMA on Dell Inspiron E1505/6400

2008-04-29 Thread dotancohen
Thanks, trollord. I've already nuked the system and reinstalled. The new
system (identical setup) does not have this issue. Sorry, I would have
liked to have kept the system around for bugsquashing and improving
Ubuntu, but I do need to work! I'm therefore closing this bug. If there
are any hardware specs you'd like, just let me know.

[Bug 224494] [NEW] kcolorchooser chooses only shades of blue

2008-04-29 Thread dotancohen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kcoloredit

The Hardware: Dell Inspiron with ATI x1400 graphics card and fglrx driver.
Kubuntu 8.04
The Problem: The Kcolourchooser application, and all KDE applications that use
an eye-dropper colour selector, selects only shades of blue.
The Fine Detail: The problem occurs only when the fglrx driver is in use. With
the open source driver, kcolourchooser works as expected.

[Bug 223384] [NEW] Cannot enable DMA on Dell Inspiron E1505/6400

2008-04-27 Thread dotancohen
Public bug reported:

I am having serious DMA problems with my Dell Inspiron E1505/6400 (Intel
DuoCore2 2.0gHz, 2GB RAM, ATI X1400 video, 1680x1050px widescreen
monitor, 80GB 7200RPM SATA hard drive). The system is almost unusable
when I need to access the disk. Right-clicking takes over 2 minutes (138
seconds to show a menu on the desktop), and other performance problems.
The disk LED is lit during these times, and the swap remains unused.
Each mounted partition is less than 70% full. The problem occurs in
KDE3, KDE4, with and without Compiz, and with both the fglrx and open
source video drivers. The system worked fine in Feisty Fawn. Untested in
Gutsy as Gutsy did not support my video card.

From googling, I see that I probably need to compile a new kernel.
Therefore, I am filing the bug here.

I cannot seem to get Kubuntu 8.04 beta installed in VirtualBox. I've
tried with Fedora9 alpha and that won't install either. So I'm without
KDE4 for the time being. Can someone else confirm this for me?

[Bug 205349] [NEW] install from usb

2008-03-22 Thread dotancohen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: systeminstaller

I am trying to install Kubuntu 8.04 beta from USB. I have never attempted a USB
install before, so I used this page as a guide:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick
I used the isotostick.sh script linked to on that page.

When I boot from USB I get the Kubuntu graphic with the following text:
The default installation is suitable for most desktop or laptop systems. Press
F1 for help and advanced installation options.
To install only the command-line base system, type 'cli' then ENTER. For the
default installation, press ENTER.

I press enter, then I get this error message:
could not find kernel image: /install./vm

I googled the error, and the only hit was to the following thread on the Ubuntu
forums:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=71567page=3

The user DaBruGo posted some changes that he made to the syslinux.cfg file. I
used his syslinux.cfg file, which suggests a kernel location of vmlinuz
instead of/install/vmlinuz, but got a rather similar error message:
could not find kernel image: vmlinux

The hardware is a Dell Inspiron E1505 / 6400 with a 2gHz Intel DuoCore2
processor, 2GB RAM, ATI X1400 graphics, and 1680x1050 display. The 80GB
hard drive has an Hardy-alpha6 on sda1 (15 GB), my daily driver Feisty
on sda2 (15 GB), 3 GB swap on sda3, and about 45GB on sda4 which is
mounted at /home.
