[Bug 1465479] Re: Palm detection does not work on synaptics touchpad

2015-06-25 Thread gobble
I found the resolution to this bug lies in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity-settings-daemon/+bug/1351772
I wonder why the issue is not yet resolved if it is so easy to fix? A new user
should ideally get a flawless experience out of the box on newly purchased
hardware rather than spend weeks frustrated about simple things. No wonder that
Windows rules the market.

Please close this bug report.

Hi

I may have mistakenly pointed to grubx64.efi instead of shimx64.efi in
the bios settings. It is working in secureboot now. Please close this
bug with my apologies - I am new to uefi.

For the record here is the output (with all the mistakes I typed in
earlier ):

[Bug 1465479] [NEW] Palm detection does not work on synaptics touchpad

2015-06-15 Thread gobble
Public bug reported:

I am unable to type properly on the Dell xps 13 2015 model (Ubuntu
vivid) without first disabling click to touch in settings. The cursor
jumps to wherever the mouse pointer is and starts typing from that
point. Currently I cant type even three words straight without the third
word getting inserted somewhere in between the earlier words or entire
paragraphs getting deleted because of auto-selection...

I tried setting PalmMinZ=100 in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-synaptics.conf
but no luck after a reboot. According to this page :
http://xps13-9333.appspot.com/#touchpad this was fixed in kernel 3.16
but I am on kernel 3.19 and the problem still exists.

[Bug 1375223] Re: unity-greeter ignores lightdm display resolution and DPI settings

2015-06-12 Thread gobble
I use a dell xps 13 9343 with a 3200x1800 screen res and adding the
command xserver-command=X -dpi 144 to the lightdm.conf results in Ubuntu
booting in low res troubleshooting mode - I never get to the unity-
greeter screen. From the logs I gather that X shuts down. I had to
boot into recovery mode and remove that line to be able to login.

[Bug 1463869] [NEW] 15.0.4 on xps 13 9343 does not boot with uefi secureboot

2015-06-10 Thread gobble
Public bug reported:

I just wiped off Windows 8 from my new Dell XPS 13 9343 and did a clean
install of Ubuntu 15.0.4. It did not boot in UEFI secure mode. I had to
disable secureboot to boot Ubuntu. Not sure if this is because Dell has
not embedded the CA cert signed by Microsoft in this machine and used
to sign the first-stage UEFI bootloader/shim or if its actually a
problem that can be fixed by using another key to sign the shim? DELL
does supply a developer edition of XPS 13 with Ubuntu and perhaps they
use a bootloader with different keys than whats in the standard shim?
Let me know if I should open a ticket with DELL instead or if you can
check the DELL version of Ubuntu about what keys they have used and
supply that in the default shim?

Apologies if the problem description is inaccurate or confusing due to
some incorrect assumption. Feel free to correct my understanding of it.

logged in it.

I am unable to run ubuntu-bug because the same problem prevents i from

[Bug 199215] Re: SD card does not mount Dell Inspiron 9300

2009-05-10 Thread gobble
I suddenly have doubts about your choice of words -

there is thousand of bugs fixed every cycles and the team doesn't have the
resources to backport all that to stable, also copying all the unstable
code change to stable would mean it would become unstable..

Why is a bug-fix being confused with feature backports? The new
features would be the unstable bit that don't need to get back into the
stable release. I do appreciate the argument about the resource crunch,
but I do feel the Ubuntu team is skipping on its commitment to fix bugs
in LTS releases.

Please clarify.

[Bug 199215] Re: SD card does not mount Dell Inspiron 9300

2009-05-09 Thread gobble
Is this going to be fixed for the stable 8.0.4 release? I have the same
problem on 780G chipset mobo
 2.6.24-23-generic #1 SMP Wed Apr 1 21:43:24 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The cardreader is built-in on the Dell 2408WFP. lsusb simply hangs.

Is upgrade to unstable release compulsory for stable release users to
get their bugs fixed?

[Bug 254458] Re: sdc error message filling up entire logs

2009-03-29 Thread gobble
I don't have a sdc harddrive.

Originally I reported this, but it skipped my attention that my Dell
2408wfp monitor has a SD and MMC card reader slots that count as sdc and
sdd.

Ser can you confirm if you have any such hardware ( block device inputs)
that the sd driver might be having a problem with?

The error messages did not appear for a week and now they are back. There is no
guarantee the messages will always appear. Usually it takes like 25 mins after
boot before they show up, may times they never show up ...
I've had a card left inserted in the slot for weeks now, it does not depend
on whether a card is inserted or not.

Regards

PS: My apologies but I did not make time to download the newest version
live cd and test.

[Bug 324389] [NEW] sda sdb auto renamed to sdc sdd, boot fail

2009-02-02 Thread gobble
Public bug reported:

First encountered in CR Bug #270118
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/270118 for 8.0.4 32 bit
Turns out that this is an arbitrary problem. The only thing that saved me from
a complete boot fail was the UUID disk string in grub.

The fstab entries were looking for a sda and sdb device while during this boot
they were renamed to sdc sdd.
This time the problem recurred for 8.0.4.2 64bit
Linux owl 2.6.24-23-generic #1 SMP Mon Jan 26 01:04:16 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Looks like inserting a SD MMC card in my Dell 2408WFP results in
renumbering - the SDMMC becomes sda while the HDD becomes sdc. Possibly
might occur only when Bios detect for USB HDD is enabled - I will post
update about this after reboot check with bios feature disabled.

Attaching dmesg and dmesg.0 showing that disks have been renamed.

My guess is the kernel scsi driver code needs fixing.

TIA

attached. Let me know if you need more info.

[Bug 254458] Re: sdc error message filling up entire logs

2009-02-02 Thread gobble
Dear Ubuntu Team

I am quite perplexed by your frequent recommendations to upgrade an LTS
release to an unstable release. I just download 8.0.4 amd64 last week
and see the same problem. The reason I did not use 8.10 is I need
stability - isn't it obvious? Are'nt you folks forgetting your social
commitment to LTS release?

Please work on this bug as provide a fix for 8.0.4.2 as

current system is Linux owl 2.6.24-23-generic #1 SMP Mon Jan 26 01:04:16

Re: [Bug 321217] Re: ATI restricted drivers 404 not found

Point taken.

First off let me say, that I too come from a Beyond Linux From Scratch
 Background.

Although I can understand your frustration with your issues that you are
suffering from that does not excuse your demeanor. It is attitudes like
yours that cause people to keep linux in general at Arms length.

ROFL ROFL I spent $1000 on a PC, whats stopping me from spending $100
on a DVD player or a licensed Windows MCE copy?

with all of that being said, Is there a reason that you chose not to use
Xubuntu 8.10, with a newer kernel and a newer driver package base one
would think you would have better results?

Wow! You are the second person in the Ubuntu community recommending this.
I can now only infer that many of you folks have not yet grasped the
meaning of LTS and Ubuntu's commitment to support it?

Asking users to upgrade at the drop of a hat and not considering what
is broken in a stable release is one big mistake that will hit your
movements credibility badly. A user who downloads a release 6 months
old and one step behind the current one, does so for very good reasons
- stability and absence of minor irritants that would have been fixed
with over a period.

Instead in your eagerness for one-upmanship and to have the last word,
you have forgotten your responsibility and closed the bug without
acknowledging the real issue

Instead of trying to point out the flaws of distributions and their
 documentation, ...

CRs are for pointing out flaws in a product :). Agreed perhaps in a
better way than I originally posted, but nonetheless...

The issue reported here is not one hard to debug bug that slipped
through the cracks. This is a simple matter of content management on
your systems - the URL for a critical driver repository is broken that
too for an older release considered stable. It may be a small error
for you to fix, but for a user staying up till 2am to finish off an
install and move on - its a big deal when even an older stable release
is so fundamentally broken.

Cheers

[Bug 321217] [NEW] ATI restricted drivers 404 not found

2009-01-25 Thread gobble
Public bug reported:

I just installed Xubuntu 8.0.4.1 amd64 version. I went to the Hardware
rivers menu and checked the Enable box for ATI Accel graphics driver.
Then it tries to download the driver and fails with error W: Failed to

restricted-modules-2.6.24/xorg-driver-
fglrx_7.1.0-8-3+2.6.24.13-18.41_amd64.deb 404 Not Found .

Can you guys get atleast one thing right? This is disgusting. I have
been a ww.linuxfromscratch.org user since 2003. Last year I tried Ubuntu
8.0.4, got totally frustrated in 6 months - something broke with every
update *every single week*, console fonts were corrupt and unusable with
ATI driver, no single reliable player like windows media player etc etc.
I switched to Opensuse 11, got even more frustrated. Now I am back to
Xubuntu with one objective - use it to rebuild my linuxfromscratch
system and forget Ubuntu/Suse Crap once and for all.

Is it too much to expect a release that works out of the box? I've spent
more time fixing my desktop in the last one year than actually do
anything productive!!Googling for the url to ATI repo yielded
nothing for 20 mins in 12 attempts!! Can you guys document things more
properly? The alternatives/repo is not listed in
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI . By the time I
get my latest and greatest chipset/mobo to work decently it will too old
and be outdated.

Please fix this you before I lose more time on your substandard product.

2008-10-25 Thread gobble
I don't think this is what F-Spot was designed for.
Matvey Kozhev

What is the problem Martin? People have grown up forced to think about
layout in terms of folders. Why are you defending a serious lapse on the
part of the developers to conceive how an application might be used? In
your role You should be acting as the marketing manager who supplies
requirements to the product development team.

So you are telling us that photos may not or should not be be browsed
by folder?!! This bug was opened in March. What have you done since then
to supply this requirement to the f-spot team?

[Bug 270118] [NEW] HDD rename after 09/12 update (incl. GCC and glibc) caused boot failure

2008-09-14 Thread gobble
Public bug reported:

Hello
I would like to report a catastrophic failure after the 09/12 update. I have
tried to recollect and list the exact sequence of events that occurred:
1.Update manager prompted me for updates to GCC and Glibc etc (as I recall from
memory) on 09/12. Installed it and shutdown.
2.On 09/13, Boot failed and Ubuntu jumped to root prompt. After some exploring,
I found that my two HDD had been renamed from sda and sdb to sdc and sdd. ( I
made no bios changes).
3. I recalled seeing some fsck errors that scrolled by the screen so I ran fsck
-y on sdc3but it could not auto repair
4. I mounted the sdc3 root partition (formerly sda3)
5. Tried to run vi /etc/fstab to change some entries but since PATH was not set
( it was only /bin:/sbin, I had to set it from cmdline). I located the path to
vi and exported the PATH variable adding /usr/local/bin and sbin folders.
5. Tried to run vi but got command not found
6. ls command now showed NO files on the entire partition except lost+found!!
7. Booting from the install CD, df -h shows there is still data on the mounted
partition with correct free/used stats: /dev/sda3 46G 36G 7.6G
 83% /media

So it seems there were two problems: HDDs were reordered. fsck blew my
inode tables.

Here is error fsck reports :

I iterated thru most of the copies of the superblock, but no luck. There
aren't any files present.

 open -s 163840 -b4096 /dev/sda3
 open -s 229376 -b4096 /dev/sda3

etc...

Since the directory structure is empty, I cannot debugfs:rdump either.

So now we have a situation where df reports filesystem 83% full, but the
inode tables are empty.

I have no log files to give you since I cannot locate any on the
partition, but you may find my other earlier CRs with dmesg, and other
logs. system was Hardy Heron with Kernel 2.6.24.21.

So now I not only need a fix and also steps to recover the data on the
partition. I do not want to re-install and lose GB of critical data
from my home folder.

TIA
Let me know if you need any further information.

[Bug 270118] Re: HDD rename after 09/12 update (incl. GCC and glibc) caused boot failure

2008-09-14 Thread gobble
OK I rdumped the lost+found, and it seems all the files are in there -
some 36GB. Will work on recovery for each block/inode, lets not make
this the subject of the CR. The main focus of this CR should be

1. did an Ubuntu update result in reordering of disks?
2. Was the fsck a result of a regression or just my bad luck that it broke?

TIA

Re: [Bug 264800] Re: wallpaper dissapeared, not being applied

2008-09-04 Thread gobble
Pedro
It worked for another user. After a reboot, everything looks fine. I
did not mention that all my desktop icons lso went missing and the
right-click on desktop was not working or showing a menu.

I guess meta-gnome is the natural choice for anything broken with
gnome, when you don't know which package is the problem.
sorry about that.

The reason I opened a bug report and not mailed the forum was because
I want to emphasize that such things should never happen *especially
when a user has not tinkered with any settings*. Imagine this for a
corporate desktop when you login to do some critical urgent work and
all your icons and desktop links dissappear. The Issue is not about
if there was a workaround that resolves the matter by asking a few
questions on the forum (that may involve hours to research for an
unfamiliar user, or being forced to reboot) . A user should never have
to encounter such a basic problem. I think most people will
appreciate it if no matter what is broken, the desktop and basic
functions always work.

I run Ubuntu 8.0.4 Gnome 2.22.3.
Thanks for your time, and I hope something can be done about this.

PS: What is the correct package for this? I mean which of the 100+
packages do I start researching to locate where the fault lies? (mind
you I was a www.linuxfromscratch.org user in 2003-2005 and I am not
averse to it :) ). And honestly do you think a windows user migrating
to Linux will research this? ( wink ;) [ all in good humor] )

Cheers

 2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer

Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced.
You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the

[Bug 238670] Re: gnome power manager No option in logoff dialog for suspend

2008-08-29 Thread gobble
I see the same problem appeared yesterday after I updated Ubuntu
Hardy/Gnome .

Yesterday 27th Aug 2008, the suspend option disappeared in the screen
that has buttons for shutdown, logout, lock screen, switch user etc ...
now the hibernate button has vanished!!

I am unable to suspend or hibernate because there are no buttons in any
app anywhere now!!

Unfirtunately I changed syslog so the dist-upgrade was not logged in
/var/log but there appears to be some regression in the Ubuntu updates
after 26th.

[Bug 255616] [NEW] Hang - cannot switch to console before Gnome login after latest update

2008-08-07 Thread gobble
Public bug reported:

Hi

Until my last update prompted by the update manager, I could CTRL-ALT+Fn
to console and other TTYs before I logged in via gdm. Now the system
hangs - screen blanks, cannot recover gdm login window either. Caps
Numlock LEDs do not work, however ATRL-ALT-DEL reboots my system, so its
not a complete keyboard freeze. Switching TTYs works AFTER login to
Gnome.

Funnily the updates all related to KDE 4,1 not gdm which is my default.
Copying dpkg.log for the 6th. I installed KDE 4.1 on the 3rd but I
don't use KDE - have a bug report 254483 for other issues too.

[Bug 254363] [NEW] suspend resume problem on AMD 780G/SB700

2008-08-03 Thread gobble
Public bug reported:

Hello
My system went into suspend due to idle state. Resume had the problems:

1. On resume console fonts are corrupt (smearing, blurring, smudging effect)
and unreadable.
2. Takes a long time to show even the console (30+ secs). HDD led was
constantly on. This problem was noticed with Amarok playing CD when suspend
occurs. I use Gnome.
3. X Screen blank, password unlock screen flashes for a second then I have to
type the password at a blank screen. Display is recoverable only after
CTRL-ALT-BKSPC
4. Audio device is muted, no sound even if I quit relaunch the player.

CPU AMD BE-2350 X2, Dell 2408WFP monitor with build-in USB ports

[Bug 254363] Re: suspend resume problem on AMD 780G/SB700

2008-08-03 Thread gobble
I mentioned the usb ports on monitor because until last week suspend
was not possible due to what looks like a usb device error in the logs.
I think Hibernate is failing because I don't use a swap device. I
suspected the DELL monitor for this.

Will attach those logs if I locate where I saved them.

[Bug 254369] [NEW] CD Drive spinning constantly at hight rpm with loud whirring noise

2008-08-03 Thread gobble
Public bug reported:

Problem is particularly bad when PC is booted with CD in tray. it never spins
down. If I boot without CD in tray and insert CD for playback, the problem
appears to die after a while if I remember right.
This problem does not happen in XP so it doesn't look like a bios or cd
firmware problem.

I have a Sony DVD writer DRU 820A.

[Bug 254483] [NEW] KDE 4.1 problem with 1920x1200 res

2008-08-03 Thread gobble
Public bug reported:

Hi All
Jut installed KDE 4.1 on instructions here:
http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-To-Install-KDE-4-1-On-Ubuntu-8-04-91034.shtml.

I found it covers the entire screen in 1280x1024 mode only. Monitor is
Dell 2408WFP. In 1920x1200 mode the launcher panel appears 1/3 way up
from the bottom, the wall paper also covers roughly about 2/3rds of the
screen (not square but 16:10). The rest of the screen is a grey-white
checkerboard pattern. I use the AMDCCCLE Catalyst 8.7. Works fine on
Gnome.

issues here.

2008-08-03 Thread gobble
Actually the wallpaper is 4:3 not 16:10 as you can see in the
screenshot. My mistake. Also If I maximise a window, I can't expand its
bottom below the launcher panel, but if its not maximised, I can move
the window to the grey checkerboard area cutting across/through the
panel. Attaching screenshot.

[Bug 254369] Re: CD Drive spinning constantly at hight rpm with loud whirring noise

2008-08-03 Thread gobble
Interestingly hdparm listed it as idle when in fact it was spinning at
top speed noisiliy. I got i to spin down with the -y option.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo hdparm -C /dev/cdrom
/dev/cdrom:
 drive state is: active/idle

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo hdparm -y /dev/cdrom
/dev/cdrom:
 issuing standby command

(Drive silent now).

Next time I insert CD the racket begins again until I issue another
hdparm -y.

Can we have Ubuntu fix this without a manual work around?

Cheers

Thank you. I will try this the next time I see this problem.

I can confirm this bug. A work around is to type in console sudo modprobe -r
ehci_hcd. After this the drve (and my usb cam work as expected. So maybe
there is something wrong in the order that ehci_hcd and ohci_hcd are loaded.
If this give not the espected result, try to add in /boot/grub/menu.lst
acpi=nopci to the boot parameters. With an older ATI SB600 chipset at a
 gigabyte board this one helps.
