[Bug 983416] [NEW] Online accounts and Contacts Manager should now integrate with Empathy but it is impossible to make it work

2012-04-16 Thread Nils Geylen
Public bug reported:

*Reporting this as a bug as per advice on Questions. This is all the
info I have though. No idea which application or service is responsible,
let alone what package or development team.*

Problem:
Online Accounts, the Contacts Manager, and Empathy are supposed to work
together now. But adding a Google account is still confusing and messy.

Reproduce:
Figure out how to add online accounts (there is no visible item in system
settings, a known bug). I came across it by trying to manage contacts via
Empathy which led me to Contacts Manager.

Issue:
The Online Account won't connect. You still need to go to accounts settings in
Empathy to add the password.

What happens:
Empathy keeps forgetting the password, even when that option is ticked -- you
would in fact expect Online Accounts to remember and provide it, since you
authorized it with Google.

Final bug:
In the end, connecting to Google from Empathy with an Online Account is all but
impossible.

What I expect:
Some clarity at least, and information on how these three services tie in.
Additionally, information on how these services account and contact information
online, is a mystery.

As a user I've no idea what is going on, and how changing groups, for
instance, has an effect on my groups on Google proper. I also have no
idea what the difference is between a regular Empathy account, or one
added via Online Accounts (except that the latter doesn't work).

The entire process is utterly confusing (and I've been using Ubuntu for
a good five or six years now).

Workaround:
The best workaround for now still seems to be: forget about Contacts and Online
Accounts and just add the account through Empathy.

Solution? It ought to be fixed or ditched. If Precise is going to go to
market in 15 days, as an LTS (!) how is this ever going to get addressed
(problem predates Precise)?

[Bug 833368] Re: clustered lvm commands fail with activation/monitoring=0 is incompatible with clustered Volume Group error

2012-04-11 Thread Nils Jungclaus
I rebuilt the lvm2 packages from source and removed the monitoring-
default-off.patch. clvm now works as expected. I believe, the patch,
which defines DEFAULT_DMEVENTD_MONITOR -1 is not compatible with the
location where this error occurs: toollib.c in the function
get_activation_monitoring_mode.

I used this patch with oneiric for a drbd/clvm/gfs/kvm cluster.

CLVM expected to work in oneiric?

2012-04-10 Thread Dr. Nils Jungclaus

Hi all,

I am trying to set a cluster using gfs2 with underlying clvm and drbd in
dual primary mode.

This works fine in principal, but the clvmd seems to have problems:

I always get:

activation/monitoring=0 is incompatible with clustered Volume Group xyz

I wanted to start drbd and clvm at boottime. So when I boot the system
the volume group is not activated and the filesystem not mounted. Even
worse when I shut down the system: clvm does not deactivate the
volumegroup and drbd is unable to set the resource to the secondary
state, resulting in a system hang.

So my question: Is clvm expected to work in oneiric? Or any older
version? The bug related to this failure seems to be

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lvm2/+bug/833368

but it is not actively worked on as it seems.

Thanks,

  Nils

Re: How to install built kernel?

IIRC, the package should be in the directory above your current
directory. But shouldn't the package name be linux-image-something?

So I know basically, I need to copy something to the /boot and update
the grub config file. On my linux source root directory, there is a
vmlinux ~ 171M I don't know if this is useful. But nothing in /boot
is that larger, other like /boot/vmlinuz-3.0.0-12 is 4.6M.

 There are also /arch/x86/boot/vmlinuz.bin 4.5M /arch/x86/boot/bzImage
 4.5M

How do I rename the kernel and install it and update the grub.cfg?

Go to the directory where you compiled your custom kernel and copy
arch/x86/boot/bzImage to /boot/vmlinuz-your-kernel-name, copy
System.map to /boot/System.map-your-kernel-name and copy .config
to /boot/config-your-kernel-name. Then run the command

sudo update-initramfs -c -k your-kernel-name
sudo update-grub

Replace your-kernel-name above with the actual kernel version.

[Bug 970569] Re: unity-greeter crashed with SIGABRT in raise()

2012-03-31 Thread Nils Geylen
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 969544 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/969544

I see the path to execute unity-greeter is to usr. So I should add that since
the updates of March 30, I have been having permissions issues in that folder.
E.g. I could suddenly not execute a 3G script anymore (Sakis, relies on
usb-modeswitch etc.) that worked fine every day before.
I checked, and as Admin I have no more rights to anything in the entire /usr
folder.
I searched for a similar error and found support forum entries that show this
has in fact happened before during upgrades.
Should I report this as a separate bug? I have no clue what happened or if it
even has anything to do with Precise...
Sorry I can't be more helpful. I'm comfortable with applying commands etc. but
I'm no source code geek :(

[Bug 812394] Re: Disable hibernate option by default

2012-03-22 Thread Nils Rennebarth
Yes, please provide an easy to find method to switch it on. It took me some
googling to find how
to enable it, and it was not obvious at all, that it was intentionally
disabled. It looked like a bug
(on xfce, a window pops up: not authorized)

And although I count myself as reasonably computer literate, I know next to
nothing about policykit et al,
and would never thought by myself to edit
/var/lib/polkit-1/localauthority/10-vendor.d/com.ubuntu.desktop.pkla

Just the bog standard build procedure:

apt-get install debhelper libdbus-glib-1-dev libexo-1-dev \

[Bug 947892] [NEW] Scrolling ncurses app in xfce4-terminal with mouse wheel not working

2012-03-06 Thread Nils Rennebarth
Public bug reported:

Affects: oneiric ocelot, precise pangolin

vte which xfce4-terminal is based on has a feature to send an
application which is using the alternate screen a few cursor up and down
keystrokes when the mouse wheel is activated. Most prominent application
is the pager (more or less) and in particular when used by man for
manpage viewing.

Now not all ncurses applications are happy with that feature, e.g. when running
screen and a shell inside screen, activating the mouse wheel would scroll the
shell history instead. That resulted in a patch to vte (still present in
vte3_0.31.0, patches/93_add_alt_screen_scroll_toggle.patch) that made the
feature toggle-able. The patch was never accepted upstream.
It also changes the default behaviour by (probably accidentally) setting the
feature to off. The result of the patch
simply is an new function that can be called to toggle the feature.

Now every package in ubuntu that uses vte needs a patch to eventually
call that new function, otherwise its behaviour will differ from
upstream.

gnome terminal does so, the patch is still in precise (patch
20_add_alt_screen_toggle_ui.patch)
xfce4-terminal should as well.

The provided patch will add a hidden Property, that can only be set manually
be editing ~/.config//Terminal/terminalrc and adding the line
  MiscScrollAlternateScreen=TRUE

The old version of my patch made xfce4-terminal segfault when closing
the Preferences screen. This version fixes that. The new version also
uses a different name because the new version of xfce4-terminal insists
on using the Misc Prefix for hidden preferences (i.e. not changeable
via the GUI) The patch is tested with no ill effects on my desktop and I
do use terminals a lot.

Please include this patch into precise, so the LTS release does not
suffer from this bug.

** Affects: xfce4-terminal (Ubuntu)

Recommended solution is to run the VMs in bridge mode, and get them a
real unique address via DHCP or whatever. HTH...

[Bug 781164] Re: mouse scroll in xfce4-terminal when running vim (man, info) doesn't work

2012-03-02 Thread Nils Rennebarth
Please reconsider. I am the author of the original patch and found out that it
needed to be rewritten
for xfce4-terminal-0.4.8. The crashes (segfault when closing the preferences
dialog) are gone.

Ubuntu uses a modified vte. And it is modified in a way that changes the
default behaviour (bad).
So all applications that use vte need to be modified as well to support the vte
modification.

The bug is still present in precise (of course, vte is unchanged) and I would
really like to see it
fixed in a LTS release.

[Bug 930993] [NEW] Lucid - Precise trouble with do-release-upgrade

2012-02-12 Thread Nils Kassube
Public bug reported:

1. I had installed the package gcj-jdk including dependencies.
Removing these packages let the upgrade continue without the error
message above.

2. However the upgrade stopped after a few packages were installed with
a failure message concerning the package lib32asound2. After also
removing the packages which depended on this package (ia32libs, wine1.2,
etc.) from a fresh copy of the system, I could successfully run the
upgrade.

3. After the first reboot, I got the error message Could not start D-
Bus. Can you call qdbus? like it is mentioned at [1] (this is a Kubuntu
system btw). After manually installing the package qdbus, the system
worked.

Lucid - Precise trouble with do-release-upgrade

2012-02-12 Thread Nils Kassube
When I try to upgrade (a copy of) my main system from Lucid to Precise
with the command do-release-upgrade -d, I get the following message:

| Could not calculate the upgrade
|
| An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
| E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be
| caused by held packages.
|
| This can be caused by:
| * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
| * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
| * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
|
| If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the
| command 'ubuntu-bug update-manager' in a terminal.

Well, I do have packages installed which were not provided by Ubuntu and
I tried to upgrade to a pre-release version. Does it really mean I
should not report the problem? After all I found a workaround for this
situation by removing some packages which were installed from the Ubuntu
repos. Here is a summary of the workaround:

After manually installing the package qdbus, the system
worked.

Please advise if and what I should report at launchpad.

You should report it. (Hmm, yes, the message is misleading.)

Done (#930993).

[Bug 358796] Re: mouse scroll in xfce4-terminal when running vim (man, info) doesn't work

2012-01-29 Thread Nils Rennebarth
I can confirm that the problem persists in oneiric with xfce4-terminal 0.4.8-1.
However applying my old patch to the current source and installing the result
fixed the problem for me.

To recap:
1) Ubuntu compiles libvte (Source package vte) with some patches,
one of them is the 93_add_alt_screen_scroll_toggle.patch, which makes the
scroll alternate screen with mouse-feature runtime configurable. In upstream,
the feature is always on, this patch makes it off by default but the feature can
be turned on by an appropriate method

2) xfce4-terminal in oneiric (0.4.8-1) comes without any patches to upstream.
As upstream does not use a patched vte, they of course did not merge ubuntus
fix for the alternat screen scroll.

3) Applying my patch below adds a hidden
(i.e. can not be set by GUI controls) configuration item
ScrollingAlternateScreen, so entering the line
ScrollingAlternateScreen=TRUE
in ~/.config/Terminal/terminalrc will tell xfce4-terminal to switch the scroll
alternate screen feature on.

4) Apparently xfce4-terminal reconfigures itself when
~/.config/Terminal/terminalrc
is edited while it is running, so I can confirm that entering the line with
FALSE will
switch off alternate screen scrolling and reverting back to TRUE switches it on
again. The feature can easily by tested by using less as a pager, then calling
man bash (or any sufficiently long manpage) and activating the scroll wheel in
the window.

IMHO, the vte patch 93_add_alt_screen_scroll_toggle.patch is done wrong: Making
an upstream feature (alternate screen scroll) configurable may be a good idea,
some
people may not like it, so it's a matter of personal preferences. But making it
switched off be default, and by that changing all applications (terminal
emulators) that
depend on the lib is clearly wrong.

[Bug 358796] Re: mouse scroll in xfce4-terminal when running vim (man, info) doesn't work

2012-01-29 Thread Nils Rennebarth
Rolf, I do not know, why the patch did not fix the problem for you. Did you
verify, that the sources have really
been patched? (I don't know how to convince the build system to apply the patch
during fakeroot debian/rules binary,
so I applied it by hand) Did you really install the newly build package? And
(most importantly) did you close all instances
of xfce4-terminal before trying again? If not, calling the new binary will
simply tell the running binary to open
another window and exit, so the newly opened window still runs the old code.

[Bug 623708] Re: duplicate files/directories when mounted

2012-01-25 Thread Nils Durner
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 823775 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/823775

Happened out of the blue (don't remember if I did an online update
yesterday) to me on Oneiric today: logged in, had an empty desktop saw
lots of ECRYPTFS_ objects in my Personal Folder. Rebooted, all files in
the standard folders seemed to be gone. At closer inspection, I noticed
that all those folders were duplicated.

#20 fixed it, thanks!

I experience a similar error with using SoapUI, but only if I have
JxBrowser enabled.

If I disable the JxBrowser SoapUI works. Check this blog post on how to disable
JxBrowser:

Here is a email thread about the issue with Ubuntu 11.10:

[Bug 296867] Re: empathy needs to support OTR encryption

2011-12-25 Thread Nils Toedtmann
+1

I am tired of pidgin and very interested in Empathy. But i depend on
OTR, so i cannot switch.

I know 5 others in my local geekosphere who have the same.

OTR is unaware of the layer below. That makes it clumsy or unelegant to
implement for an individual protocol like XMPP. But at the same thime
this is a strength: a multi-protocol IM client with OTR has end-to-end
security with the same key pair on all protocols used. And that is
elegant again :-) Calling that broken by design is a narrow view and
missing the point of OTR.

from WPA2-AES to WPA-TKIP helped.
See also https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=124989, upgrading to a

[Bug 887440] Re: Firefox hangs in Oneric

2011-11-21 Thread Nils Jungclaus
I got the same problem here, so by now, I am using the firefox nightly
build which behaves much better, but isn't as responsive as firefox 7 on
natty in comparison.

Chrome woks fine with oneiric, seamonkey does as well, only ff7 does
not.

One thing that might influence this is a client x509 certificate. We use
this to authenticate against an internal Apache. Since I need this for
my daily work, I have not compared with a situation without client
certificate.

[Bug 888835] [NEW] /usr/lib/ocf/resource.d/pacemaker/o2cb calls killproc

2011-11-10 Thread Nils Meyer
Public bug reported:

1) Ubuntu Release affected
Description:Ubuntu 11.10
Release:11.10

2) Package version:
pacemaker:
  Installed: 1.1.5-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1.1.5-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 1.1.5-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3) Stopping o2cb via pacemaker/corosync should result in o2cb being
killed.

4) o2cb isn't killed because killproc used in the script doesn't exist,
should be possible to use killall instead.
The following bug appears in my logfile: Nov 11 00:52:31 vm2 lrmd: [2050]:

[Bug 828761] Re: Resume from suspend takes much more time when nvidia-current driver is installed.

2011-10-25 Thread Nils Braden
Also got this problem running Xfce, though I installed Ubuntu with unity
and only afterwarsd installed Xubuntu-desktop so I'm not sure if any
Unity/Gnome-Stuff is interfering.

I also have some problems with alsa after resuming from standby but this
is probably unrelated. Only I found this bug while troubleshooting the
sound-problems.

[Bug 863306] Re: reload -- gpg sig invalid

2011-10-24 Thread nils
This appears to be a workaround:

host64:/var/lib/apt/lists$ sudo rm *
host64:/var/lib/apt/lists$ sudo rm partial/*

The files will be redownloaded at the next apt-get update.

The underlying problem appears to be that some of the files are bad
(old? corrupt? partial downloads?) and that that error condition isnt
handled correctly by apt-get update.

[Bug 876829] Re: Oneiric's ifupdown breaks ip aliases

2011-10-21 Thread Nils Pascal Illenseer
Before oneiric ifupdown used ifconfig to set the network interface and
with oneiric iproute2 is used. iproute2 assigns new IPs directly to the
interface, e.g. eth0, if you like to have a virtual interface eth0:0,
you have to add a label explicitly.

ifconfig eth0:0 x.x.x.x up
vs.
ip addr add x.x.x.x/x dev eth0 label eth0:0

I assume ifupdown misses to set the label with iproute2.

[Bug 219840] Re: rkhunter reports hidden directories under /dev

2011-10-15 Thread nils
I would agree that if Ubuntu ships in this configuration by default,
then the rkhunter settings should be adapted accordingly. The other
option is for udev and initramfs to check if rkhunter is installed and
appropriately configured for them, but I see this as an rkhunter config
issue for standard ubuntu configurations.

[Bug 864848] Re: plasma network manager widget does not connect to UMTS net

2011-10-03 Thread nils
Fix is committed upstream:

--- Comment #2 From Lamarque V Souza 2011-10-03 01:13:30 ---

Git commit 2b5130205d951d5758049f114cfccc6f05881cdc by Lamarque V. Souza.
Committed on 03/10/2011 at 03:09.
Pushed by lvsouza into branch 'nm09'.

Set default GSM's password flag to AgentOwned to prevent the password
from not being saved at all and, consequently, the secrets dialog appearing
at each connection attempt.

BUG: 283204
FIXED-IN: nm09

http://commits.kde.org/networkmanagement/2b5130205d951d5758049f114cfccc6f05881cdc

--- Comment #3 From Lamarque V Souza 2011-10-03 01:14:08 ---

The line unlock no longer required in your log indicates that the PIN was
successfully used to unlock your modem. The second time the dialog appear is
not because of PIN but because of the Password field, which was not saved
when the connection was created.

[Bug 865107] [NEW] networkmanager does not detect GSM modem status correctly

2011-10-03 Thread nils
Public bug reported:

Description From nils 2011-10-03 07:27:59 (-) [reply]

Version: unspecified
OS:Linux

When traveling by high-speed train, the modem connects and disconnects often,
and switches from UMTS to GPRS etc. Often the reconnecting and switching works.

Sometimes the modem is not connected though (light on solid meaning there is a
network but no connection) and the network manager reports that it is still
connected.

Version: haven't tried it with the kubuntu beta, but older versions hat this
problem.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Connect the modem, travel by high speed train, wait :)

Actual Results:
KNM reports connection when there isn't one

Expected Results:
KNM recognised dropped connection and reconnects

KNM possibly needs to actively confirm the status from time to time? I assume
that events are lost somewhere when the connection state changes too
frequently.

A manual Reconnect option would be good to force the state.

[Bug 861584] Re: package flashplugin-installer 10.3.183.10ubuntu5 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2011-10-03 Thread nils
This bug started showing up for me when jumping onto the kubuntu beta2.
There was a network manager bug that killed my GSM connection, and when
the flashplugin-installer wanted to download it couldn't. Since then
(even with remove and install via apt, including --purge) the bug
persists.

[Bug 504734] Re: Knetworkmanager cannot use GSM modems

2011-10-03 Thread nils
This bug seems weird, ive been using GSM modems for quite a while
without problems. If this problem persists in 11.10 oneric, please try
connecting to a network and then post the output of

egrep (modem-manager|NetworkManager) /var/log/syslog /var/log/debug
/var/log/daemon.log
and
dpkg -l | grep network | grep manage

sudo apt-get remove --purge flashplugin-downloader flashplugin-installer
sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer

is a workaround, fixed the problem for me. The dpkg workaround in the

[Bug 864848] [NEW] plasma network manager widget does not connect to UMTS net

2011-10-02 Thread nils
Public bug reported:

Ive filed the bug here: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=283204

Heres the info:
after selecting the cell network to connect to, the network manager stops at
the Waiting for authorization stage. This happens every time, even though I
give it the PIN (twice, once before it asks if its OK to unlock the device,
once when I try to connect to the network).

WLAN works fine and connects automatically.

Heres the syslog:
