Re: Alt+ Super+S Not working on Most Versions of Live CD

2016-11-04 Thread Rob Whyte
I confirm that the key combination does work in 16.04 and 16.10.

Are you using the command as you write it with the ALT key first?

As at times the order does matter.

I would like to suggest waiting for the drum sounds as you have done,
and try some different variations of speed and ever so slightly longer
push of the keys as I have noticed that over the years too.

Good luck

Rob

[Bug 1530405] Re: NMI watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 22s! [kerneloops:814]

2016-10-27 Thread Rob Knop
I am having this problem too. I'm not sure the root of the problem.
It's intermittent. Sometimes machines boot, sometimes they do not.
Sometimes they boot, but then fail to mount an nfs filesystem. (In
those cases, top shows mount.nfs using 100% of the CPU. I can't kill
the process, and I can't reboot... the "reboot" command tells me that it
times out. Hurray, systemd... sigh.)

The machine in question has nvidia-352 and Linux 4.4.0-45 installed.

I couldn't figure out if the problem was kernel, NFS, systemd, or
nvidia. Finding this bug suggests to me that the problem is kernel.
However, the errors I'm getting suggest that it's "mount.nfs" that is
the process that's stuck.

This only started happening a few days ago when I did an apt-get
upgrade. I probably hadn't upgraded for a few weeks before that.

Any hope of this bug getting fixed any time soon? It sounds like
there's a fix out there upstream; is there, really?

[Bug 1635115] Re: grub fails zfs root filesystem detection due to failed checksum

2016-10-21 Thread Rob Starkey
Kernel versions were 4.4.0-42 upgrading to 4.4.0-45.

The checksum mismatch happens with every kernel version, so I don't
think it's kernel specific. Looks to be a grub or ZOL issue.

Hey Timo,

I don't think your issue it related to the original issue I raised when
I opened this bug. Grub isn't having device path issue, it's having
checksum issues.

[Bug 1635115] [NEW] grub fails zfs root filesystem detection due to failed checksum

I followed https://github.com/zfsonlinux/zfs/wiki/Ubuntu-16.04-Root-on-ZFS to
make a ZFS native root disk system.

Installation went fine, systems works like a champ... but then, after a
while, it's time to apt-get update ; apt-get upgrade to update my
kernel. That apt-get install fails because grub can't detect it's root
file system:

root@q-2-d.sv1:~# grub-probe /
grub-probe: error: unknown filesystem.

Strange, this use to work. Add in a -vv and I see:

[Bug 1572801] Re: Ubuntu 16.04 Unity desktop uses much more ram than Ubuntu 15.10

2016-10-09 Thread rob cain
Just to add, too was experiencing high RAM usage & what appeared to be a
slow but steady memory leak in Unbunti 16.04 (latest). In my case, I
discovered at least part of the problem was one or more (yet to be
determined) Firefox (v49.0) plugins/add-ons. People also running Firefox
might like to retry tests using Firefox in Safe mode (all add ons
disabled), if you haven't alreay done so, see if that makes any
difference. (Also running stuff like Dropbox in the background whilst
trying to pin down a problem like this seems an inherently bad idea).

Just tried doing a 'sudo apt-get upgrade' command, and the entries
contain:

linux-headers-4.4.0-36-generic
linux-image-4.4.0-36-generic
linux-image-extra-4.4.0-36-generic

The original log above has "linux-image-4.4.0-38-generic 4.4.0-38.57,"
so this must be the prior Kernel where f.lux was working, right?

[Bug 1585084] Re: Volume notification keeps popping up constantly(the notifyosd bubble on top-right corner)

2016-10-08 Thread rob cain
I had exactly the same problem (ubuntu 16.04 latest). Just started
happenning, no apparent cause or changes beforehand.

Tried all the usual suggestions: eg:

a) rm -r ~/.config/pulse; pulseaudio -k - reboot
b) Open VLC,Go to Preferences, then to Sound, click in the reset preferences
button,Close VLC
c) sudo alsa force-reload
d) alsamixer - auto-mute - disable

- worked for a little while, but then came back again.

Just done Anthony's workaround above (#18) - & so far it has worked
(thanks Anthony). just have to remember how to re-enable it agan
whenever i want to use headphones in future.

Seem to recall this same/similar problem plagued users on Ubuntu 12.04
for a while.

We seem to be going backwards a little with 16.04. Looking forward to a
fix.

[Bug 1628384] Re: f.lux not working on 4.4.0-38

2016-10-04 Thread rob
Joseph,

Yes, this started happening after an upgrade. Unfortunately, I don't
remember the last kernel I had and it's since been removed where it was
working. I stay on stable builds though, if that helps with identifying
the previous Kernel. (If there's logs stored for upgrades, let me know
where to look and I'll follow up.)

uname -a
Linux rob-media 4.8.0-040800-generic #201610022031 SMP Mon Oct 3 00:32:57 UTC
2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Followed the instructions above with the mainline kernel builds linked above,
and it seems that f.lux doesn't effect anything.

[Bug 1617849] Re: latest system update broke fglrx video drivers, so no more 3d video acceleration

2016-09-29 Thread Rob
I'm afraid I cannot include the output requested, because I have since
replaced the 14.04 LTS installation that this bug affected with a 16.04
LTS install.

I had been under the mistaken understanding that Catalyst drivers /
fglrx were necessary for my use case, which is why I had installed 14.04
LTS. I have since learned that the Mesa 10.1 version in the 14.04 LTS
release is is about 2 years old, and the OpenGL drivers were not quite
usable. However the OpenGL driver version in 16.04 LTS, which I have
since installed, is perfectly suitable for my use case, and appears to
outperform fglrx.

I suspect that the 14.04 LTS upgrade that deprecated fglrx was related
to fglrx's incompatibility with an X and/or kernel update. While 14.04's
OpenGL drivers are not suitable for my video card, those in 16.04 more
than suffice.

In other words, the fix to this 'bug' seemed to be to update/upgrade to
Ubuntu 16.04.

Introduction

2016-09-26 Thread Rob Newman

Hi Everyone,

My name is Rob, I just joined the Ubuntu QA team. I am semi-retired and
looking for ways to put my technical skills to use. I am considered a
power user with Unix. I have done scripting and some complicated grep
commands in my day.

I'm looking forward to working with all of you and learning more about
Ubuntu.

Cheers,
Rob

[Bug 1626299] [NEW] ACPI Errors in dmesg, battery monitor shows empty

2016-09-21 Thread Rob Cohen
Public bug reported:

I am using Xubuntu, and the power manager show an empty battery at all
times, regardless of battery level. I essentially have no indicators of
how much power my laptop has left. Once I run out of power, the laptop
obviously shuts down causing data corruption.

my dmesg shows:

[ 10.587295] ACPI Error: No handler for Region [PMRG] (88015a0c0090)

later it shows:

It's unfortunate to never know how much power is left, as one might imagine.

I find that I can:

$ killall nm-applet && nm-applet&

and it is back working. I haven't been successful getting that to work
in a script upon resume yet though.

[Bug 1617849] [NEW] latest system update broke fglrx video drivers, so no more 3d video acceleration

2016-08-28 Thread Rob
Public bug reported:

System is 14.04 LTS.

As a reminder, AMD fglrx drivers (formerly Catalyst) are deprecated on
16.04 LTS. The current suggested workaround for people who need fglrx
drivers is "use 14.04 LTS".

I have my system set to weekly updates. The most recent system update
reverted my system back to the open source driver (xserver-xorg-video-
ati).

The update system still seems to identify fglrx as available. Fglrx and
fglrx-updates both appear as options in the System > ... > Additional
Drivers dialog. However selecting them and attempting to apply the
change, the system will churn a bit then just reselect the open drivers
option, without any dialog or error message.

The open video drivers don't enable 3d hardware acceleration, which is
unacceptable for my use case.

[Bug 1617600] [NEW] No encryption password prompt with plymouth

2016-08-27 Thread Rob Tongue
Public bug reported:

After installing fresh, system booted fine and prompted for password to
decrypt root partition. After running the latest updates, now the
screen stays black on boot, but blindly entering password works to get
the system booted. This could get very confusing for users, as you now
have the option when installing to encrypt the entire filesystem. I
reinstalled thinking my system broke, when it didn't really, I just
can't see the password box.

Re: Orca not speaking when I install Ubuntu 16.4 into vmware

2016-08-25 Thread Rob Whyte
Hi,

It should be quite simple for you to use a desktop image and install
packages.

Ubuntu server is not accessible unless you have some assistance to get
set up.

If you can get some sighted assistance to install, log in and enable ssh
access then go ahead.

There are how ever other alternatives that you can access.

Good luck

Rob

[Bug 1350810] Re: Shift-F2 no longer working in Byobu in Ubuntu 14.10 (utopic) with tmux 1.9

2016-08-22 Thread Rob Parker
Hi TenLeftFingers,

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one seeing this issue.

However as to whether the issue lies, I would counter that gnome-
terminal on Ubuntu 14.04 could connect to the same Debian 8 server and
not suffer the issue, whereas the issue does occur when connecting with
gnome-terminal on Ubuntu 16.04. The versions of byobu and tmux on the
Debian 8 server had not changed between connecting from Ubuntu 14.04 and
connecting from Ubuntu 16.04

Yes it's true that byobu on Ubuntu 16.04 itself doesn't suffer the
issue, but it appears something within Ubuntu has changed between 14.04
and 16.04 which causes the difference in behaviour when connecting to
the same Debian 8 server.

Whether whatever has changed in Ubuntu should be considered a bug, or an
expected change, is probably another question - I'd perhaps argue it is
a bug, but we'll have to see. Either way, we need to find out what has
changed.

Re: making an ISO image

2016-08-06 Thread Rob Whyte
Hi,

mount -a reads your /etc/fstab file.

If sda2 is in that file and has the location as /mnt yes it would work.

But it is unlikely.

So that is why you need to specify the partition, being /dev/sda2 and
the mount point which is /mnt

mount /dev/sda2 /mnt

Good luck

Rob

Re: {Spam?} making an ISO image

2016-08-06 Thread Rob Whyte
What have ou tried when fixing your old install on sda2.

That should be recoverable quite easily.

You need to mount the /dev from your currently running Ubuntu to the
mounted partition.

For example

mount -o bind /dev /mnt/dev

Assuming that sda2 is mounted to /mnt

Repeat that for sys and proc

mount -o bind /sys /mnt/sys

mount -o bind /proc /mnt/proc

Then change the root file system using the chroot command

chroot /mnt

Now your computer thinks you are actually using sda2 instead of your USB.

If you want to install your boot loaded from sda2 to your hard drive
type this:

grub-install /dev/sda

update-grub

thene xit the chroot

exit

Good luck.

[Bug 1350810] Re: Shift-F2 no longer working in Byobu in Ubuntu 14.10 (utopic) with tmux 1.9

2016-08-03 Thread Rob Parker
It may be a different/unrelated issue, but I'm experiencing something
similar since rebuilding my laptop with Ubuntu 16.04, having previously
been using 14.04.

>From gnome-terminal I run byobu (from the Ubuntu 16.04 repos) locally
and also, in another gnome-terminal window, I SSH to a Debian 8 server
running byobu (from the Debian 8 repos).

Since upgrading my laptop to 16.04 local byobu is still fine, but I'm
seeing an issue when using gnome-terminal to SSH to byobu on Debian 8.
It is where Shift+F2 simply causes a tilde (~) to be printed, rather
than a new horizontal split being created. In-fact Shift+F1 through to
Shift+F8 all cause a tilde to be printed.

Do you know whether this issue is related to Ubuntu 16.04's gnome-
terminal, Debian 8's byobu, or something else? Notably, the issue did
not occur when using gnome-terminal on Ubuntu 14.04 to connect to byobu
on the same Debian 8 server. If it's a known issue, is there's a
workaround?

[Bug 1183692] Re: Not enough disk space for kernel security update on /boot

2016-07-31 Thread Rob Hills
Agree with the above. There should be a simple, foolproof-as-possible way to
manage boot device free space. I am currently trying to rescue my wife's
computer from an incomplete 14.04LTS -> 16.04LTS upgrade that has failed near
the end because it ran out of space on /boot. THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN!
Maybe I should have known to check for adequate free space on /boot before
doing an upgrade, but if I should have known that, so should the upgrader and
it should have checked and warned me BEFORE STARTING the upgrade!

Ideally the upgrade process should offer the option of clearing out old
kernels (there were only 2 there apart from the one in use) before
proceeding.

[Bug 1312051] Re: Upstart init process consuming all ram

2016-07-23 Thread Rob Teszka
I have been getting this bug repeatedly on 16.04 LTS. After about say 2
hours of uptime everything is extremely slow and unresponsive, even just
editing text files. I have to log into a different console with
ctrl+alt+f1 to do anything. According to top, upstart is using about
100% CPU and around 40% memory. It's intermittent, only happens about
every 4-5 reboots or so, but boy is it annoying. Any suggestions? Any
logs I can post to help diagnose?

[Bug 1084403] Re: no support for gpgsig tags

2016-07-18 Thread Rob Loach
Built ontop of wgrant's feedback, a new patch:
http://files.robloach.net/bzr-git--gpg.diff

While I understand the best way around this would be to implement the
GPG signatures in bzr, but this is affecting many projects brought into
Launchpad through bzr-git. Ignoring it may be the best option until we
can implement it correctly in the bzr space.

[Bug 1594222] Re: known ssld crash

2016-06-27 Thread Rob Andrews
ssld does crash on *all* servers currently running this version of
charybdis which makes it insecure and remotely crashable. This issue
should be handled by the maintainer and Ubuntu Security.

I'd suggest either removing this package or finding someone to update
it. I won't be involved any further than I have in reporting the error.

[Bug 1581560] Re: system crash when attaching external display

2016-06-27 Thread Rob Latham
The 'bios-outdated-1.13' tag confuses me.

It's true that I am running (dmidecode says...) Vendor: LENOVO Version:
N14ET29W (1.07 )

but there is no mention of display fixes in the release notes that
accompany n14ur12w (1.13).

I can update my bios but wanted to understand if the tag addition was
for fixing a known issue or was something I should try to see if it
helps.

As a reminder, Ubuntu-15.10 handled this display fine with the same bios
version.

[Bug 1581560] Re: system crash when attaching external display

2016-06-21 Thread Rob Latham
I tried an upstream kernel ( 4.4.12-040412-generic #201606011712 ).
Attaching after suspend/resume no longer results in a crash.

The screen frequently fails to restore on the first try. dmesg has
these lines in that case:

[drm:intel_mst_disable_dp [i915]] *ERROR* failed to update payload -22
[drm] GPU HANG: ecode 8:-1:0x, reason: Kicking stuck wait on blitter
ring, action: continue
[drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe A FIFO
underrun

But, in an improvement from the Ubuntu kernel, I can unplug and try
again with success.

[Bug 1594634] [NEW] ZFS on iscsi target fails at boot/shutdown

2016-06-20 Thread Rob
Public bug reported:

I've got a ZFS volume on an ISCSI target, once the system boots I can
bring it online.

My ISCSI target shows up as:

root@test:/home/rob# lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda 8:00 8.1T 0 disk

root@test:/home/rob# zpool status
  pool: data2
 state: ONLINE
  scan: none requested
config:

NAMESTATE READ WRITE CKSUM
data2 ONLINE 0 0 0
  sda ONLINE 0 0 0

errors: No known data errors

root@test:/home/rob# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
--- snip --
data2 3.1T 0 3.1T 0% /data2
data2/backup3.2T 165G 3.1T 6% /data2/backup
data2/test 7.7T 4.7T 3.1T 61% /data2/test

However in the case of a system shutdown/reboot the system tries to
unmount the disk after the network has been brought down which obviously
fails.

When booting the system the zpool never gets imported as the 'zfs-
import-cache.service' runs before the iscsi target is initiated.

RE: [Bug 1590843] Re: Ubuntu Installation crashed half way through the installation - during checking for other packages and before making the hard drive bootable

2016-06-10 Thread Rob Mamede
Thank you for your reply. I'm running v16.04 now, but as you noticed I
was running an old version (as I was downloading 16.04 on another system
and using a USB stick to install the much improved 16.04, though I'm not
crazy about the desktop UI I selected - thought I'd try MATE. Since the
installation, I've had only one issue that came and went with a
notification.

I will continue to send reports when issues occur and I am prompted to
do so.

[Bug 1590843] [NEW] Ubuntu Installation crashed half way through the installation - during checking for other packages and before making the hard drive bootable

2016-06-09 Thread Rob Mamede
Public bug reported:

During the installation a message appeared stating that the installation
crashed. When the progress was viewed it was observed that
approximately 50% of the installation occurred, by the progress
indicator bar being half way through the installation. The message below
the progress indicator stated that the installation was looking for
other packages to install. Since this has been attempted a few times, I
deleted the partitions before beginning and in doing so found that the
hard drive cannot be booted after this crash though the Ubuntu runtime
still allows Ubuntu to be run in memory from the USB stick. I will
attempt other methods of installing Ubuntu after submitting this report.

[Bug 1581560] [NEW] system crash when attaching external display

2016-05-13 Thread Rob Latham
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to 16.04, my thinkpad x1 carbon (3rd edition) freezes
and reboots when I attach an external display.

Process:
- put laptop to sleep.
- come into work the next day
- open up laptop
- plug in external display
- observe bug

Expected behavior: I can attach the external display
Observed behavior: system shows black screen on both laptop and display and
after a minute or two reboots. Laptop drives external display fine after
reboot.

I ssh to the laptop from another machine and monitored /var/log/syslog,
/var/log/Xorg.0.log, and ~/.xsession-errors. All I see in those files
before the lockup is this, from Xorg.0.log:

[ 34289.447] (II) intel(0): Enabled output DP1-8
[ 34289.448] (II) intel(0): Enabled output DP1-1

[ 34289.482] (II) intel(0): switch to mode 2560x1440@60.0 on DP1-8 using pipe 0,

[Bug 1085706] Re: pam_ecryptfs: seteuid error

2016-04-29 Thread Rob Moore
I meant to note that when this occurs I can no longer access my
applications in the Unity bar but can alt-tab and select them to access
them. Otherwise, the only means I've found to address this is to log out
and back in.

[Bug 1187550] Re: package postgres-xc (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed pre-removal script returned error exit status 1

2016-04-15 Thread Rob Nichols
I tried removing postgres-xc and the system reported that it wasn't
installed. I then tried installing it (to see if installing it would
overwrite a corrupt failed install with working files), but this failed
with "Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages".

Following reading this post: http://askubuntu.com/questions/223237
/unable-to-correct-problems-you-have-held-broken-packages I ran `sudo
apt-get update`.

The problem no longer occurs on reboot.

[Bug 1569049] [NEW] KeepassX installs iteself as default app for all MIME types

2016-04-11 Thread rob
Public bug reported:

Seems that in Kubuntu 16.04 beta, the KeepassX package installs itself
as the default application to open all mime types. So, if I download a
.deb file, the system will open it with KeepassX. Clicking on a .log
file will open KeepassX. Etc. Any file type that doesn't have a
specifically defined application association will open KeepassX.
Obviously, not particularly useful behaviour.

[Bug 1559469] Re: [Dell Inc. XPS 13 9350] suspend/resume failure

2016-03-23 Thread Rob Sharp
At risk of clouding the issue, I've noticed that suspend/resume works
correctly using `linux-image-extra-4.4.0-13-generic` but closing the lid
will cause a shutdown using `linux-image-extra-4.4.0-15-generic`.

I'm on 16.04 using the same laptop (XPS 9350) as the OP.

[Bug 1401190] Re: curtin makes assumptions about partition names on all devices

2016-03-07 Thread Rob Sanderson
Also worth noting that curtin runs:

curtin --install-deps install --config=configs/config-000.cfg
--config=configs/config-001.cfg --config=configs/config-002.cfg
--config=configs/config-003.cfg --config=configs/config-004.cfg
http://10.10.4.221:5248/images/ubuntu/amd64/generic/trusty/release/root-
tgz

and config-002.cfg contains the nvme device (unrelated to the above but
looks like it will cause problems in the next step i.e. once we can get
curtin to select the correct partition)

cat configs/config-002.cfg
