Well, since the almighty Ubuntu wiki tells me to, I suppose I should introduce myself. Hi. As you can tell by my email address, I'm Connor Peet. I've been a fan of Ubuntu for neigh on four years now, and have recently started looking at giving back to the community. I am a student, and part time web developer/graphic designer/general computer guy, who also happens to be good with graphics. I began playing with and (at first) breaking computers about six years ago, and have been graphic designing for most of that time. With that said, is there anything that needs to get done? [ubuntu-in] Introduction to the Ubuntu-in Mailing list.
Hi, My name is Cherag and I am a newbie in Linux. I have been working in the IT industry as an IT engineer since 2003 on Windows based systems. I however have been interested in Linux and concept of free/open source since the time I was learning abut computers. Due my limited knowledge of Linux I was almost always using Windows even at home. I had tried installing a few distros but always reverted back to Windows later. Just recently I have taken some very basic training in linux and at least now I can work on my home pc using Edubuntu 12.04 LTS which I recently installed (along with WIN 7 in dual boot mode). I do not wish to go back to only Windows and so I would most probably be taking advanced training of LAMP. I also want to divert my career towards Linux and it support and development etc. My friends and collegues are also interested in Linux just like me. I am very keen on learning more about Linux and would wish to attend any seminars or meeting or events for the same. I live in Mumbai at Grant Road. Any help or info from the community will be highly appreciated. Thanks, Cherag Kersi Mistry -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in

Re: [ubuntu-art] Introduction
I think they've started to hit a tipping point recently. I was always a staunch PS user - hated gimp. Recently, I started designing websites in Inkscape and have been coming to love it. That's a lot of what I used PS for, so now when I have smaller graphics editing (not site design) I give it a try in GIMP first. It's gotten way better the past year or so, IMO. It certainly has all the power I need, it's just a matter of uncovering it and getting used to the interface - which is at least as good as PS, I'm just not totally used to it yet. The thing about open-source software is that it evolves quickly so you have to keep an open-mind and give things another try every once in awhile. -Nicky --- Challenge is the Opportunity for Greatness On Sun, Jun 26, 2011 at 1:53 PM, Andrew apperley the.adventure.ish...@gmail.com wrote: I've used gimp but don't find it easy to use. To answer your question; i've got nothing special in mind. I'm open to whatever it is that needs to be done. If i can help with something and my knowledge (as far as i goes atm) is sufficient, i'll help. If i was to name something really specific, it would be the distribution of software, advertising the os, making people aware that there are other ways to make a computer work. Hey Tom, welcome to the group! We're always capable of using a few extra hands. There are tons of ways to help out on Ubuntu-be. In attachment you'll find a Freemind Mindmap with just a few options... there are a lot more off course! I'm hoping to get this on the website one of these days, just needs to be tweaked a little further. So if you - or anyone on this list - has any comments (important stuff missing, great ideas that should be on there, faulty links, etc...) please feel free to send me a message. Grtz, Jurgen. Hey, Alexander, I really like rbpitch5 and rect3813-0! rbpitch7 looks kind of like a certain rude gesture ;-) I might consider swapping out the excellent tuning fork from Saleel for rect3813... but it would be great if you could use the same pattern as 3813, but with the little horizontal slices like rbpitch5. So, combine the slices style of rbpitch5 / 7 with the vertical bar sizes of rect3813. That would be great! I'll still include saleel's svg in the distribution since it is a small file and people might prefer it, but I could switch the default if you make the requested change. I'd really appreciate that!! :) Thanks, Sean On Mon, Jan 31, 2011 at 1:34 AM, Alexander King alexanderddk...@gmail.com wrote: Mk here are some more mock ups http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2869749/rbpitch5.png http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2869749/rbpitch7.png http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2869749/rect3813-0.png -- Kind regards, Alexander King Oxodise Media | ABN: 93 128 144 953 310 24 oxo (310 24 696) | enquir...@oxodise.com | www.oxodise.com -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

[ubuntu-art] Introduction Request
Hello Ubuntu Artwork Team, I am a community / hobbyist developer, who has written a plugin for Rhythmbox called rbpitch. It is not being included in upstream Rhythmbox, but I have plans to get it one day included in Ubuntu, when it's ready. I have developed it using Ubuntu tools, such as Launchpad, Bazaar, and the Ubuntu Forums for user feedback. The plugin's feature is to allow near real-time pitch, tempo, and speed shifting in the playing song in Rhythmbox. It is licensed under the same terms as Rhythmbox. Here are a few relevant links: Screenshots: http://tiyukquellmalz.org/rbpitch-0.13.0.png depicting the configuration and user interface for rbpitch http://tiyukquellmalz.org/sean/rb-main.png with a stock GTK icon as a placeholder, where the rbpitch icon shows up on the Rhythmbox toolbar (see the red rectangle outlining the icon; I edited this in with GIMP.) User Feedback: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1303297 Launchpad (code, etc): https://launchpad.net/rbpitch I am writing to the Artwork team to ask for someone to design for me an icon to go on the Rhythmbox toolbar. My only requirement is that it be a distinctive icon. By distinctive, I mean, that it would be difficult to mistake the icon for another icon that is already used on the Ubuntu desktop. The reason why I want a custom icon is that the existing icons that are even remotely relevant, are already used. For example: icons of a speaker, music note, etc. are already used somewhere. I don't want to confuse the user. I could probably make a very bad-looking icon on my own, but artistry is really not my forte; I am a programmer. :-) I desire to make rbpitch available across multiple distros, but I've always considered Ubuntu to be the showcase distro of rbpitch: the one where I develop the code, and the one that (hopefully) will package it first. So in return for my contributing rbpitch to the distro, I would be grateful if someone could design an appropriate but distinct icon for the toolbar. If you would like to help me, then please reply with any ideas you have about what the icon would look like. If you are then able to create an icon, I will most likely accept your first submission if it is at least decent. My eye for aesthetics is poor, so I will readily accept something that someone else worked on and thought it was good. Technical requirements: 1. PNG, XPM or SVG format 2. 32 x 32 pixels if raster (there will never be a need to have a larger or smaller icon than exactly 32x32) 3. Background should be transparency so that the icon gracefully sits on the background color of the Rhythmbox window 4. Somehow the idea portrayed by the icon should be relevant to some of the concepts of rbpitch. Here's a concept list, including a brief list of possible applications: Concepts: speed, pitch shifting, music, sound End-User Applications: guitar practice, dance lessons, singing practice, entertainment, novelty, karaoke, vinyl playback, transcription, dictation And last but not least, I would be willing to make a $25 USD donation to the artist whose icon I accept, as well as a $25 USD donation to the Free Software Foundation (above and beyond my yearly membership). Re: [ubuntu-art] Introduction Request
Saleel, That will work great! The icon is kind of nice because the default position of the sliders on rbpitch is almost that shape :-) That's just the way it works out because of the supported ranges of pitch, tempo and speed varying. I know it's supposed to be a tuning fork, though: that is an excellent analogy to the physical world of what rbpitch can do. How would you like to receive your donation? Feel free to send me your paypal info off-list. I'll make the donation to the FSF shortly as well. I've wired it into the code with a few changes and pushed a revision to Launchpad. Installable debian packages for 10.10 are coming soon. How would you like to receive your donation? Feel free to send me your paypal info off-list. It was good practice, and that focused spec was also nice. Seeing how this is for an opensource project accepting the donation doesn't seem right, donate it to the EFF if you like :) Also the icon people on this list like vish, and thorwil, may have some critique/ improvements. -- Saleel -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

Hello all, I installed a desktop version of Ubuntu on my pc yesterday so i am very green to Ubuntu. But after some hours getting used to the new layout etc i really saw the great potential of Ubuntu! Still snooping around all the great apps and programs that are free and open source, installed some programs already but still looking for some that i use on xp(yes sorry i do own a copy of win xp)but that i would love to run in Ubuntu. But i do have over 10 years experience with graphics, designing in 2d and 3d on my computer. My tool of the trade are a wacom tablet, ps cs4, 3dmax, poser, bryce. I run my own website at darkdesign.eu where i share a wide range of resources. But you can also find my work at silver-.deviantart.com. Or you might come across my work some where else on the Internet I would defiantly want to spend some of my time designing something for Ubuntu and getting to know this new OS better. Force might be too strong a word and may result in extra resistance from the shop owner. Have him install Firefox (and make it the default, no IE on desktop) on half the machines and let him see which ones get infected faster. Do keep us all posted on your success/failures as well as what line of reasoning resonated with the owner. Thanks, Bryan I shall force him to make FireFox the default web browser in all his systems. Hi Ankur! Thanks for the welcome and glad to hear you are already trying this approach. I would start small, does his web cafe already have Firefox installed? What kind of complex networking does he do? The printing menu is actually much better than Windows once you get used to it. Just System - Administration, New - Printer and it usually detects all/most network and local printers. Then it is just a wizard (although there are some printers that have issues). Depending on the power of the computers using Ubuntu and VirtualBox,etc might be useful to give people access to IE, etc. If they really need it. (And they can automatically be restored to a virus free state!) Btw, are there some key Indian web apps that still require IE6? More specs on the computers will be helpful as well as what is installed on Windows (or demand for, like more games, etc). So my first suggestions is push Firefox 3.5 (alternatively wait a little while longer 1month for 3.5.2) and see if he likes it. Re: [ubuntu-in] Introduction, Ubuntu member from NJ Loco Team in Delhi
Hi! That guy has Firefox installed in his systems, but that is not much of use. I am in a remote and most backward part of India. The people who go to cyber cafe are mostly students. And there is a significant number of those who have done some simple a-b-c-d type computer courses. These are the people who make Internet explorer their priority and thus that cyber cafe guy. Well, people are becoming aware and I have seen many using FireFox. I also keep on informing people about the differences between IE and FireFox. But we have got to do a lot of work. There is a majority of people who wouldn't believe when you say that there is something similar to and better than IE. The networking is the simple LAN. But, as he is learning the thing, he just says that everything is very complex. Setting up a LAN would be easy for you and me, but not for him, for the time being. I shall take care of this matter. You said 'The printing menu is actually much better than Windows once you get used to it.' This guy is actually not doing much to get used to it. Actually he feels this whole idea of switching crap. Its only my persuasion that is holding his resistance. There is nothing much Indian connection with the IE. Yes, there are few nationalised banks' websites which allow only IE for the transactions. Well, nobody does banking in a cyber cafe, if at all anybody knows about it. lol Your idea about running IE is great too. IE can be run using Wine too. But I shall make sure that I throw IE out that cyber cafe, and off course bring FireFox in its place. You have asked about the specs and what people demand here. Please keep it in mind that people here have just a few basic needs. Most of the users come to cyber cafe for surfing internet, and majority of the time they surf either social networking sites or educational sites. People Youtubing are seen a few times. There are also few regualr users who use their computers, not for internet but for spreadsheet or document works. So, in a nutshell, a computer with an office suite, a browser and an OS is enough for the users in my locality. On Windows the main applications used are IE, MS Office, Yahoo Messenger and Google Talk. If you wish to add some more to this list, you can add Google Earth and Nokia PC Suite. Gaming is kinda uncool in my place. So, cyber cafes have nil demands for games. Also we still haven't got any gaming culture and game parlours in my city. I shall force him to make FireFox the default web browser in all his systems. Also, I shall keep you posted about my failures and successes. Re: [ubuntu-in] Introduction, Ubuntu member from NJ Loco Team in Delhi
Hi Bryan! Welcome to India. Your idea about implementing FOSS on a mass level is great. Converting Cyber Cafe systems is a great idea too. You asked if anybody has gone after Internet cafes about such implementations. Well, I have done so. I am trying to convince a local cyber cafe owner to switch to FOSS. So, to be clear, I have not tried this thing in mass, but I have at least started it. I have given an Ubuntu CD to that person too. Intially he was not at all ready to think about it. But after quite a bit of arguments he has promised me that he would try these on a computer. If it works, he would completely convert to a FOSS devotee. I am a high school student and I wasn't able to convince him very strongly due to my limited knowledge about Ubuntu and other FOSS. But I am trying my best. As usual, this person is annoyed with viruses and is looking forward to a permanent solution. So, he may convert very soon. But few things like: no start button, no right clickrefresh, different printer setup menu, different internet connection manager, no IE, complex networking etc are stopping him. I hope these will not prevent him. Can you gimme some tips to convince him more strongly? My hope is to help create a South Manchester Ubuntu group, that could organise regular meetings providing installation and usage advice as well as attend events within the local community to promote free software and help people move away from their usual (and expensive) OS's. I have helped a number of people convert to using Ubuntu and the response has always been positive. I hope this can be broadened to the wider community in a face-to-face way. I believe that around the Chorlton area of the city this would be embraced with open arms Thanks for your time. I would be interested in an Ubuntu group. I'm quite experienced with Ubuntu installation and desktop usage, and have used it for a short time as a server as well (before I lost my job in West Yorkshire). I installed Ubuntu and Edubuntu for several friends, neighbours and relatives, usually with stellar response. I now live in the Pendleton area of Salford, and could probably get a bus to whichever bit of South Manchester you meet at. [ubuntu-in] Introduction
Dear Ubuntu members, I am a new entrant into this mailing list. I joined this mailing list to get insight into the Ubuntu OS. Introduction: Name: Jagrut Badani Age: 23 Occupation: Student Place: Kolkata Reason for joining mailing list: New found love for Ubuntu !! Why I decided to switch from Microsoft? I am having a horrific past six months with my laptop Lenovo R52 having Win XP Pro with 256 MB RAM. Some viruses creating files like New Folder.exe and Fun.exe hijacked my computer. I kept them at bay by deleting them, cleaning up registry and ending the programs. But they always came back. I took help of google, tools like Process Explorer, info, tools from Piyush Labs, Spyware Doctor, etc. Off late, they are not allowing me open any exe files, consuming lot of CPU usage in Interrupts, etc . The virus even does not allow me to use uninstall application from Add/Remove programs. And they have thoroughly slowed down my laptop. I formatted and restored Win XP to factory settings. Unfortunately after installing updates like SP3, Symantec Norton Antivirus, I found that the computer is really getting slow. After frustrating myself and wasting over 20 hours on google and fiddling with my computer, I have finally decided to switch over to Ubuntu. Some reviews on Ubuntu mentioned that it runs well on 256MB RAM, does not get affected by virus, trojans, malwares, spywares easily. Downloads for applications are also easy to get. Perhaps, the only issue in migrating on Lenovo R52 will be running the Wireless connection as some sites pointed it out, though they say this problem can be overcome. I switched over to using Open Office on Win XP 3 months back and I liked it very much. I want to move away from using any sort of pirated software but at the same time I don't want to waste money on upgrades every few years for OS from Microsoft, Antivirus companies, then hardware like more RAM, more hard disk space, better graphics. I don't understand why software vendors don't keep their offerings reasonably priced, slim and simple. Hence, I hope using Ubuntu will be a nice experience. I tried to download the iso file over broadband, unfortunately connection was disrupted and mozilla download was unable to resume download. Hence, I have ordered a CD of Ubuntu Hardy Heron from linuxbazar. I was desperate to use ubuntu today itself. But now I have to sulk till the CD arrives. I hope Ubuntu lives upto expectations and reading the reviews on internet I think it definitely will. I am also looking forward to help ubuntu development in future in whatever small way I can. Thank You, Jagrut -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in

Hello, Ubuntu Marketing Team :-) My name is Izam, I'm from Brunei. I work with the local industry regulatory body responsible for regulating the telecom industry and promoting the ICT industry. I'm an avid fan of Linux and Open Source in general and Ubuntu in particular. Here's hoping I can contriute what I can to the Team and add value to the discussions. Kind Regards, Izam. -- Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible. Instead only try to realize the truth. There is no spoon. Then you'll see that it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself. -- ubuntu-marketing mailing list ubuntu-marketing@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-marketing
