Starting a new thread helps in many ways. Many people look at the subject
and delete e-mails without reading if they are not interested with the
topics.

So I suggest start a new topic with the issue...

Squid is only capable of proxy-ing HTTP traffic. It can't do anything
for IMAP/POP/SMTP. The configuration is required to be done on your
network perimeter device by creating an access control list (ACL) that
allows outbound IMAP/POP/SMTP.

If you're using Gmail, the network admin needs to create a rule that
allows connection from your machine to ports 465 or 587 (SMTP) and 993
(IMAP) of the gmail mail servers.

In most scenarios, the firewall/gateway is configured to forward all
HTTP traffic to the squid host (or to a port running squid on the same
host) and either drop or directly allow connections that are not
HTTP.

After reading all the input, I have come to obvious conclusion that "All the
E-mail clients are good and it is actually few features that captures
particular user. So I will try most of aforesaid E-mail clients. Lets see
which one clicks for me..."

This is a techno-political discussion :) Anyway TB is freely
available, so this is more of a moot point.

> Anyway which one do you think is better? with reasons please.

I have used TB as well as evolution for my work mails (The server is
Exchange server for calendaring and mails, + IMAP/POP support). For
everything, I find TB (IMAP) + Lightning + Davmail + Enigmail (TB
Extension for GPG) as working better than Evolution. This combination
still has some bugs, etc - but no other good alternative.

Davmail basically acts as a Calendar gateway to talk to the exchange
server using Caldav (OWA or Outlook Web Access). This allows a better
calendar experience than just lightning, if you need Exchange
Calendaring support.

If you're looking at a purely local calendar, then davmail is not required.

I love evolution. Its very very hacker friendly. Thunderbird, not so
much. Evolution recognizes lists and does a lot of stuff other clients
don't. This may change with the new version in Lucid, I'm not sure
about that though.

I had experimented with mixing gnome and kde, but was dissapointed by
the lack of seamless interface - though the apps seemed to work without
any problems. Since then I have Ubuntu and Kubuntu on

I prefer Thunderbird by far.
And I'm saying this after using Evolution for a few months.

Thunderbird's usability, features like Tabbed browsing, configuration
options, etc. far overshadow Evolution's.

Features like GPG and Calendar (Lightning plugin) are awesome.

Even I wonder why most Distros don't have Thunderbird as their mail client
as opposed to Evolution or even Kontact.

kde software work on gnome too, quite well at that provided one
installs the entrire necessary packs.

My os is a gnome base with kde and xfce apps all thrown in, no problems as such

Kontact has always been my preference when I am using KDE. Its a
complete suite and not just an email client (Kmail component of Kontact
is). It is very well integrated with KDE and does the job of managing
contacts, calender, rss feeds, notes, to-do, time-tracker... not to
mention emails.
So if I am using KDE (Kubutu that is), I would stick to Kontact (Kmail)
for an email client.
If I am on gnome, i rather prefer the web interface of gmail ;)

evolution mayb because its closest to M$ lookout in feel and
features, and there was a time when with novells dominance it was
popular so a lot of corporate clients still need / prefer this.

Thunderbird is good, i have used it for years but in the end gave it
up because it became unreliable. It could not handle slow net
connections and it gave up being able to download gmail.

Am using Kontact - which has quite a bit of what you want, and may be
more. right now the only reason i am using it is because it is
downloading my gmail mails.

Given a choice i might still use thunderbird because of its simplicity
and ease of use and ease of configurations. But Kontact is much more
richer in terms of multi tasking features and quite a decent tool too.
