The first few minutes after the phone comes out of the box the most important 
minutes in the life of that phone (at least for Canonical).

I realize that it’s impossible to ensure that phones have a recent image. But 
the problems I experienced apparently are unrelated to the age of the image. 
After I updated to 9.1, all the issues I saw persisted. (The one issue that 
might related to the old image was the stuck first reboot after the upgrade.)

All this is about looking at the world from the perspective of a non-technical 
person who buys the phone and living through their experience. If a customer 
goes through the same experience as me, that’s a lost customer for sure. We 
need to evaluate and test our software from the perspective of a non-technical 
user. If we don’t, we completely miss our audience.

If I can’t reliably connect to my wifi network OOB, that’s a killer bug. If I 
can’t transfer my music collection, that’s another killer bug.

Andrew, the point is not whether there is a work-around. It don’t need a 
stop-gap, in the sense that I use the phone only for testing. The point is that 
an ordinary user gets to see Fahrenheit in the Today scope when they want 
Celsius. There is no obvious way to address the problem because the places the 
user would look (the settings in the Today scope, settings in the weather 
scope, and the settings app) don’t allow the units to be changed.

The ordinary average user will walk away and go “this phone is no good, it can 
only show me temperatures in the wrong units”.

Well, the update to OTA-9.1 worked just fine, except for the first reboot 
problem. The phone tells me it has 9.1 installed (image 10).

I left the phone lying on the table and went out for a few hours. I didn’t 
change anything, didn’t reboot, didn’t install anything, etc. Three hours 
later, the OSK suddenly worked.

Sorry for the thread hijack, but there seems to be a very obvious lack of any 
backup apps, or any way to easily backup data.

Is anyone working on one or any plans for one?

[Ubuntu-phone] ACTION REQUIRED: Big CI Train changes just around the corner!

Hi everybody!

In a few days I will be rolling out a big change to the way CI Train
builds source packages, however this change is not compatible with all
source packages and some may require changes in order to remain
compatible with the new behavior.

The change is that the train will no longer install build dependencies
and run "debian/rules clean" during the *source* package build (these
will of course still be run in the PPA during binary package build),
which will dramatically reduce the time it takes to build source
packages in the train, allowing people to iterate on their silo builds
more rapidly (one test reduced source package build time from 100
minutes to 35 minutes on a large silo).

The vast majority of packages should be unaffected by this, however if
you are using the debian/rules clean target in order to modify your
debian/control file prior to source package build (which is an
officially supported CI Train feature), you'll need to stop using
debian/rules and start using a special hook script which we've created
for this purpose.

So far I'm aware of unity-scopes-api and unity8 being affected by this
change, however I've already submitted branches fixing those ones. If
you believe your source package is affected by this change, please
contact me and I'll get your code up to speed.

Here are example MPs showing what the new hook script looks like:

In short: You need a new script, debian/bileto_pre_release_hook, which

$SERIES will be set to the name of the release, eg, "vivid".

I can vouch for this one. I had Google Maps opened to find the address of
something to enter into uNav and uNav could not got coordinates. Once I closed
Google Maps, it started working. It would be nice if that were not the case
though

Hello Micheal,I think I don't understand, what you mean, sorry...
As you can see, if you scroll down, I send a question, somebody answered me 
(Rodney), I answered again, and then a person (simplehuman) wrote me, that my 
last answer was delivered in spam folder. And that I should please resend the 
message. That I did.

So what did I do wrong?
And what did you mean with ' I reported a bug that the error message is not 
good enough but I can't
find it any more right now.'? I did not get that message...
My system setting says that there is 3,0 GB of free space...  Dekko needs 25,4 
MiB... So that is enough, or not?

FWIW, I did get your previous mail. But even if it would end up in some
people's spam folder, resending the same mail will probably not help.
Also you did get a reply to your previous mail, didn't you?

In any case, my guess would be that you are running out of space. I
reported a bug that the error message is not good enough but I can't
find it any more right now.

Please check in system-settings how much free space you have left.

I'll tell you a few tricks from my experience developing uNav. I assure you
that uNav is working as it should be.
I hope this will be useful for more users. This will apply to any GPS app
too:

   - First: Each position in uNav is from the device.
   - uNav will not start a navigation until you get a good accuracy for
   driving.
   - Check your system configurations:


   - https://myapps.developer.ubuntu.com/site_media/appmedia/2016/03/x.png
   - https://myapps.developer.ubuntu.com/site_media/appmedia/2016/03/y.png
   - https://myapps.developer.ubuntu.com/site_media/appmedia/2016/03/z_1.png


   - If you don't reboot the phone in a few days, sometimes the GPS device
   is not returning positions to uNav, then it will wait for a GPS signal
   forever. How to get positions again? Sadly, reboot the phone for a fresh
   environment.
   - Use WiFi enabled and not connected to a network: This will enable the
   AGPS feature and you will get a position in seconds (sadly with 5 seconds
   between positions). If you don't enable the WiFi, you will have to wait for
   a real GPS position, this could take a few minutes. If you are using AGPS
   it will try GPS ASAP it has a good GPS signal.
   - Don't use 2 GPS apps at the same time. The GPS will not work for booth
   of them.

Then, my advise today is this: Enable WiFi (not connected), reboot phone
and try uNav. It should work. If not, please, fill a bug in
bugs.launchpad.net/unav ;)

Now, (more) seriously: Some of the things you mention could be hw related.
Maybe you want to run a couple of the screen tests in checkbox?
Some other of your findings could be already reported. I suggest you browse
launchpad a little bit to +1 the issues you found already reported, and
report those which aren't there yet.

I'm using the phone as my only device and I do find bugs. A lot of them. I
do get frustrated. I also discover new things that would be handy to have.
I try to talk with the people involved to ask for their opinion and see if
we can make it a better experience for users. Not only because it's my job
but also because I'd personally like it to be successful. Because I do
believe in Free Software and because I do believe it's a nice thing to have
alternatives. Sure android is comfortable. Not perfect, but good enough,
and, again, quite comfortable. I also find it insecure. So I like the idea
of having an option, for me and for others.

I don't agree with all of the decisions that have been made about the
phone, nor do I know all the circumstances under which they were made. But
I'd be really happy to see more people using the phone and helping it get
better sooner. Even, and maybe specially, people from Canonical. I know for
a lot (maybe most of them?) it's not part of their job. And even if you
work on the phone it doesn't mean it's your job to use it on a daily basis.
But I feel it's surely a good way to find problems and solutions at a
faster pace, which is something I think we'd all appreciate.

As a side note, *I* think (and this opinion is entirely personal) ranting
on a public list does not help you solve your issues with the phone nor
does help the company or the community around it. It does make me happy,
however, to see the people from that community answering your questions in
a way that makes me feel sure I do want this project to succeed.

Gallery was supposed to launch on the last visited view, just like
Calendar. Unfortunately it seems it is broken. Just reported a new bug [0]
so we can track this. I will take a look on that.

I will start by breaking a small confidence. I shipped Michi the phone in
question (unless he got another E5 recently!), and I believe it came from a
batch that Canonical acquired around the time of launch. It is therefore
quite old.

It is standard practice for us to issue fresh factory images to OEMs like
BQ with each OTA release.

Fahrenheit units. Here in Australia, we use Celsius but neither Today scope nor 
Weather scope allow me to change units. After changing the language to English 
(Australia), I get Celsius. However, I prefer to use US English for spelling 
and the like. Mashing language and units together in this way is fine for 
setting defaults, but not if there is no way to change one without also 
changing the other.

The code in question is The Weather Channel scope/ubuntu-rest-scopes 
(which is aggregated by the Today scope), not the Today scope, as now 
reflected in the bug tasks.

If you want to keep your web browsing history, bookmarks, downloads
history and cookies, you’ll want to back up
/home/phablet/.local/share/webbrowser-app

What you want to backup:

* contacts:
copy the folder /home/phablet/.local/share/evlution/addressbook/

* SMS/call history:
you'll find that in /home/phablet/history-service/history.sqlite

* You want to check your other apps. e.g. if you are using Authenticator
for two-factor-authentication you will want to copy it's configuration
too in order to not lock yourself out from your accounts. App's configs
are in /home/phablet/.config/ or /home/phablet/.local/share/.

After reflashing, copy those files/folders to the same location again
(overwriting the empty default ones) and reboot the phone.

I (Matthias) am only a normal subscriber and can only see what comes
down from lists.launchpad.net. I do not know (but I do not think) that
lists.launchpad.net changes the To: line. In my personal archive I have
a lot of different forms of the To: lines, for example:

on their way through.

rapid development in the last year? Could any of it be resolved by wiping
and starting again with an up to date image?

is it possible to clear the webapp cache, if something goes wrong?

Sometimes i have trouble with the twitter webapp. It crashes and i think
the only way to resolve this, is to clear the cache.

I don’t think so because everything else seems to be working just fine. I can 
tap on icons, swipe, etc. The right thing happens all the time. Except for the 
OSK.

keyboard specific problem but that it's just more visible in the
keyboard because that's one of the only things that supports
multitouch. To verify that hypothesis could you try installing the
Finger Painting app from the store and see if multiple lines appear
when you try drawing with a single finger?

Weren't you planning on using the download manager? If so

I'm not sure what the expected behavior is if it is not allowed though
(stall or return with error), but this API is most likely the thing used
to update the image when told to only download over wifi.

I've found this issue with the OSK getting lost. It's siloed but not
landet yet.

Yeah, that's indeed a huge problem IMO. The images on those devices are
ancient indeed and you only get to OTA after all that setup stuff.

[Ubuntu-phone] alternative to XMLHttpRequest ?

Hi!

I am writing a soundcloud client and the issue I am seeing right now is
that the response with 302 status is automatically redirected, this is fine
in most cases but for me, it ends up downloading the whole track to some
unknown location. I don't want that since I want to stream the track and
not download it completely before playing it.

I googled around and came across this[1]. What alternatives do I have ?
Shall I implement the internet part in c++ or is there an alternative
to XMLHttpRequest which does not redirect 302 responses ?

NB: I am not an expert of JS, rather a newbie.

You should take this to IRC or somewhere to chat with someone who
knows about OSK, mailing list is a hard place to debug things. Your
OSK seems really misbehaving, completely abnormal. It may be related
to some of the other problems you're having too.

As for the other problems, I believe the biggest problem in addition
to your hw specific problem(s) was shipping with ancient software to
you. That won't happen with the new products, but if that was a recent
purchase (not known in your case) I think the factory images really
should get upgraded occasionally. Even if OTA-9 does not fix all the
problems or feature gaps in the world, it does fix a truck/shipload of
those. OTA-10 will also bring lots of new things and fixes.

You need to set the timezone in date&time settings yourself, NITZ
support isn't available AFAIK yet although I don't find a bug now so
I'm not sure.

Wifi problem is something specific to your case like OSK, it's also
something most people have no problems with as far as I know. MTP as a
protocol is not very well suited for mass transfers in my experience,
but using VMWare could hinder it too. I haven't had big problems
myself, mainly when copying photos in and out on Ubuntu.

Most of your issues seem atypical (aside from whatever OOB experience
with ancient software) and should be debugged one by one. There are
also real problems, slowdown bugs and feature gaps (like that NITZ)
but yours are something else.

Sounds like either your phone or install is seriously borked - I'd 
reflash with the bootstrap option and see if that helps. Also, check 
that your software system actually updated. Are you still on OTA 2, or 
is it 9.5? It may be that such a big update (2 to 9.5) didn't work - the 
software has been released incrementally. Don't give up yet - the BQ 4.5 
is essentially the same hardware (sans the screen), and I have none of 
those issues.

I don't really have any problem you described. I'm using Meizu MX4 for 
several month as a main phone and don't observe such critical bugs, at 
least for now (sometimes shit happens, but fixed quickly. It is 
excusably due to system "kids age").


So did you update your phone? If so, it is better to try reflashing it 
with --bootstrap option.


You got this phone with really very old and buggy version, as I know 
phones with such old versions just aren't sold in stores. I got my Meizu 
MX4 with OTA-6 update and didn't experience any of this bugs described.


Also u could get defective phone.

P. S. You can change Fahrenheit to Celsius in Weather app options.

is very very old. Many many fixes have been applied since then. I

The originally installed image was build 2. The new one is OTA-9.1 (build 10).

I’m doing this on a MacBook Pro, running Xenial in a Fusion VM. I’ll try the USB copy on my desktop and my Chrombook when I get back from holidays. It’s possible that the USB problems relate to VMWare.

Still, if if the USB issue turns out to be VMWare related, the other points I reported still don’t make for a good user experience.

No need to bootstrap. I just did a reboot. Now I’m getting the OSK again. 
Previously, the OSK went missing not just for the wifi password, but for 
absolutely everything.

So, I can finally try to enter my password so I can connect to my wifi network. 
I tap “Show password”. It takes two taps to get the green tick box.

I start entering my password. The first letter works. Then I hit the second 
letter. It’s an ‘a’. I tap the ‘a’ and the text widget shows me “fga”.

I randomly tap a few other letters. Sometimes I get a single letter echoed, 
sometimes two, three or four. Even the backspace key produces two or three 
letters.

This is starting to look like there is something seriously wrong with input in 
general, for any text input field. For example, when I simply press and hold 
down the backspace key, the phone madly types random letters, and I can here 
the vibrator humming like crazy. So, is this a software issue, or do I simply 
have a phone with a bad touch screen?

Sure enough, after a reboot, I can see the available networks again. So, I made 
the mistake of disconnecting from my network and telling the phone to forget 
that network. Thereafter, I ended up in a state where the phone didn’t show me 
any wifi networks. (It did invite me to look at the previous networks though, 
even though there weren’t any.)

So, I figured, now that it’s shown, I’ll connect to my network again. So, I tap 
the name of my network in the list and get the little dialog to enter the 
network password. Because I’m trying to reproduce the earlier error with the 
on-screen keyboard, I tap “Show password”. Nothing happens. I tap “Show 
password” again. Still nothing happens. I tap “Show password” on the text 
instead of the tick box. Nothing. Then I madly stab at the tick box several 
times. Low and behold, it turns into a green tick, after considerable delay.

At this point, there is a blinking cursor in the text entry field for the 
password, but no OSK. I tap on the text box so I get the OSK. No OSK appears. I 
tap again. No OSK. Just brilliant.

I tap cancel to get back to the network list, and tap my network again. I tap 
the “Show password” tick box. No reaction. I tap it a second time. This time it 
turns green. I tap on the text entry field. No keyboard.

Rinse and repeat: This time, I tap on the network name, the password dialog 
appears, and I manage to turn on “Show password” on the very first tap. But I 
still can’t enter the password because it appears impossible to get the OSK to 
appear.

So, I return to the network list. In an attempt to reset things so I can try 
again, I tap the toggle to turn Wifi off. The list of networks goes empty, as 
expected. Then I tap the toggle again to turn wifi back on. The toggle turns 
green, as expected. But now, the network list is empty again, and there is no 
way to bring it back.

Time for another reboot.

Oh, wait, no. About two minutes later, just as I’m about to reboot, suddenly 
the network list appears. So, I again try to enter my network password. I 
can’t, because there is no keyboard.

So, I guess it’s a reflash now, with —bootstrap, in the hope that I’ll 
eventually get a keyboard.

This is ridiculous.

If I can produce this many bugs without even seriously trying in the first two 
hours after receiving the phone, I really wonder what’s going on during testing.

Let me put this very clearly: with this level of UI design and software 
reliability, we will lose 90% of all customers in the first day after purchase. 
This is a lot worse than just “not yet ready”. This is unusable.

When my screen broke I simply plugged in a mouse and carried on 
regardless. I loved the feeling of being unstoppable! No, it's certainly 
not ready. My phone runs slower than a glacier at times. It's so very, 
very close though.

Well, let’s see…

USB transfer is still unusable. It might be a VMWare problem, which I’ll verify 
when I get back from holidays.

The phone still is set to the wrong time zone.

The language and units are still tied together, so I can have either US English 
and Fahrenheit, or Australian English and Celsius. But US English and Celsius 
is impossible.

It tried to reproduce the issue with entering the Wifi password.

So, I went to the Settings up and said “Forget this network” to get rid of the 
current connection.

After doing that, I figured I can re-connect and re-enter the password. No joy.

Now the settings up shows me “Previous Networks” and “Connect to hidden 
network…”. (My network is not hidden.) When I tap on “Previous networks”, I get 
a completely blank page. (Why does it invite my to look at previous networks 
when there aren’t any?) No wifi networks are shown at all now, even though 
there are several around.

Pulling down on the network indicator has the same problems. It doesn’t offer 
me any networks I could connect to.

I suppose the next step will be to reboot to see whether that changes anything.

See what I mean when I say that this far from ready?

I haven’t even tried to use the phone in earnest yet, and I’ve run into six 
separate problem by now, all within an hour or so.

Well, I did do that for about a week - then the screen started playing 
up with the mouse, and making it worse than unusable. (sigh) At the end 
of the day I've got 2 businesses to run, and using the broken screen 
wasn't helping. Will keep the Moto E for a backup, but looking forward 
to having my Touch device working again.

Fair enough! That said, I'm surprised you got shipped a phone with 
version 2 on it - I suspect coming direct from Canonical had something 
to do with it. Sounds like a really sucky experience, but I'm interested 
in your feedback once you try the most recent system. I'm not developing 
the system myself, but a user who finds it more than adequate for my needs.

Mitchell, I’m a Canonical developer, and I didn’t pay for the phone. It was 
sent to me by Canonical for my development work.

Not that it makes any difference. What I just went through totally sucks. 
Literally everything I did with the phone since I unpacked it, no matter how 
trivial, has failed. Followed by the “hmmm… I wonder whether the upgrade it 
just flashed has bricked my phone” experience (after the phone didn’t reboot 
following the OTA-9.1 update).

It’s hard to think of a more disappointing experience.

people Canonical employs for this. To the customer, only one thing matters: 
whether the thing works adequately or not.

What I just experienced is a long way from “working adequately”.

It is well established that Ubuntu is not yet ready for prime time on 
phones. My handset has not lived up to the bar you set since they day I 
got it yet I wouldn't trade it for the world. Issues are being resolved 
every month and in my opinion the fact a smaller company like Canonical 
has achieved what the likes of Google and Apple have is a major 
achievement. The team working on this is tiny by comparison and you 
wouldn't expect them to be able to complete this journey in anything 
near the time the big boys can.

The originally installed image was build 2. The new one is OTA-9.1 (build 10).

I’m doing this on a MacBook Pro, running Xenial in a Fusion VM. I’ll try the 
USB copy on my desktop and my Chrombook when I get back from holidays. It’s 
possible that the USB problems relate to VMWare.

Still, if if the USB issue turns out to be VMWare related, the other points I 
reported still don’t make for a good user experience.
