New website files
Howdy, I am flying out to Japan this Saturday for my new job, and before I sign out of this list I wanted to post for the record that all the new website data (DB and Drupal files) have been sent to Scott with CC to Cory. Thank you all for your support during the short time that I participated in the discussions, and good luck with the success of UbuntuStudio. As mentioned in the meeting (log), I recently landed a job in Japan. First I thought I had 2 - 3 of months for the transition, but the whole process has accelerated and I am flying to Tokyo in less than two weeks. This means that I really have no spare time left, and I do not expect that to change anytime soon, so consider me inactive at least for the foreseeable future. The good news is that the new website is pretty usable even as is. So if you think you would like to use the new website, I can provide all the files and a database dump for you to have. Let me know. But considering how important communication is to art direction and openness to a volunteer-based initiative, an ubuntu-studio-design mailing list may be a better approach for something like this. This would keep the noise out of the development list and would give those of us specifically interested in the creative aspect of US a place to freely discuss/brainstorm things without fear of producing unwanted noise. I am under the impression that US suffers from a shortage of resources. If that is the case (those in the know, please confirm or deny), besides end users which are of course a natural goal, the strategy should also take into account both technical and non-technical potential contributors as a target, End users and contributors may not always be mutually exclusive, but they do require different message platforms and possibly even communication channels. > The two services that immediately come to mind are facebook and twitter, but > I'd also be open to incorporating soundcloud or vimeo into our strategy to > showcase the work done with ubuntu studio. > > Ultimately it depends on how many people are dedicated to joining this team. > If we had 10 people, we could allocate responsibilities so not just one > person is doing all of the work. This is good for general awareness and can potentially help reach out to the target audience beyond the existing US-specific ecosystem. * Allow people to create website account, login and comment on the US website using their social network service account (i.e., FB, Twitter, etc.) to lower the participation barrier. Yes, I am using sliding tabs in what looks like an accordion. So while I like the way the front page preface area looks, I am not completely happy with the user interaction. I will see if I can come up with some visual cues as to how to interact with the sliding tabs (don't really know how, though); if that does not work, I may just replace the script to a standard accordion script. > Text looks awesome! They can eventually be replaced with whatever is decided to be the official logo and/or tagline for the next release (just FYI, the current logo is a combination of the US graphic signature -- which tbh I don't remember where I got from -- with text using the Ubuntu font; the text is not an image, so the kerning may not be exact and I suppose it may even render differently depending on the browser/resolution/etc.; eventually, we will have to use an image for the logo). Updating the current website to 11.04 release
Howdy, As noted on this bug report... https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/774607 ...the website has not been updated to reflect that fact that a new version of US has been released, and the download page is still pointing to all the 10.10 downloads. Which is a bit of a shame... ;) To try to remedy this, I volunteer to make the changes necessary to show the new release and point users to the 11.04 downloads. I am very familiar with Drupal, so this should be very quick and easy. To that effect, I have created a new account on the website which is now pending admin approval. I would also need editing rights in order to be able to make changes to the content, but I don't know who grants those rights nor how one acquires the necessary permissions. An ad that conveys a well formulated overall theme and message platform, and that targets a clearly defined audience is easier to create and much more likely to produce the desired effect. This requires plenty of thought, so putting time on your side would be a good thing IMO. Thanks for the nice words and the feedback. Yes, I agree that the HOME menu entry is redundant. Once I get the breadcrumbs properly setup and working for each content type (pages, news, blog, forum, etc.) then I will remove it. With regards to the alignment to grid, I have it in mind, but I am still moving things around, so fine adjustments will come later. That being said, I do have a tendency to "break the rules" for the sake of playfulness and visual liveliness, so don't be surprised if not everything is meticulously aligned. :) By the way, I worked a bit on the front page slider today; here is a screenshot: https://picasaweb.google.com/jorge.g.mare/UbuntuStudioArtwork#5595645470727783042 I am still not totally happy with the visuals, but the under the hood stuff (templates and CSS) are more or less in place, so it's another small step forward. I will be busy the next several days, so things are going to stall a bit, but I will pick up again next week. If possible, I would like to put the site online on a staging URL for you guys to play with towards the end of next week. We'll see if I can. Re: US website theme RFC & request for screenshots
Howdy, I did a few more tweaks here and there, plus added and themed user profiles. Here are a few mandatory screenshots: News post https://picasaweb.google.com/jorge.g.mare/UbuntuStudioArtwork#5595278554459506242 User profile https://picasaweb.google.com/jorge.g.mare/UbuntuStudioArtwork#5595278554875022562 Blog post https://picasaweb.google.com/jorge.g.mare/UbuntuStudioArtwork#5595284881897234786 I think the theme is evolving nicely, but there are some things that I am not still happy with. Tomorrow if I have some time I will try to work on the front page slideshow. Speaking of which, I could really use some screenshots of US in action. If you have any, please send them over this way. ;) Cheers, Jorge -- Ubuntu-Studio-devel mailing list Ubuntu-Studio-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-studio-devel

US website theme RFC & request for screenshots
Howdy, As mentioned in another message today, I have posted some screenshots of the Drupal 6 theme that I am developing for the US website. You can see the images here: https://picasaweb.google.com/jorge.g.mare/UbuntuStudioArtwork# Input/feedback is welcome, but please note that this is still at a very early stage, so be nice and ignore the rough edges (which there are many). Also, please ignore the wording; I am using mostly borrowed text as placeholders. Now I have a request. I would like to have screenshots of US in action, particularly in the application space and user cases that US specifically caters to, to use as artwork in the front page and also as part of the Screenshot section that will be added later. So I am asking you, US users, to send me your screenies. Assuming this list does not accept attachments, feel free to email them to me privately. Thanks! I am quite familiar with Drupal, so will provide my feedback where it may (hopefully) help. ;) I have a question about the status of the theme that you linked to: is this considered to be finalized? If not, do you have a mockup showing what you are shooting for design and color-wise? Trying to get a clearer image of what the site is expected to look like. Just as a little background relevant to the topic of this thread, I am the creator of the theme currently being used in the Haiku project website at http://haiku-os.org. I created this for the first official alpha release of Haiku, back in late 2009. I have also created a couple of derivative themes that are currently being used by a few Haiku community websites, such as http://haiku-es.org (Haiku Iberoamérica), http://haiku-cn.org (Haiku China) and http://haiku-jp.org (Haiku Japan).
