[ubuntu-studio-users] USB audio device already in the list is not matched

2024-03-15 Thread James Harkins
If I grep autojack.json for raw, id and bus, I get:

182:"raw": "UR22mkII",
183:"id": "0499:170f",
184:"bus": "001",

217:"raw": "Pro",
218:"id": "0763:2012",
219:"bus": "001",

267:"raw": "USB",
268:"id": "17ef:306a",
269:"bus": "005",

304:"raw": "TB",
305:"id": "23e5:a090",
306:"bus": "007",

OK.

I am now connected to that "Pro" device. In the Studio Controls USB device
menu, I see

USB13 0763:2012 001 Pro:0,0 capture and playback (unplugged)
USB13 0763:2012 001 Pro:1,0 capture and playback (unplugged)

Ahem. It's plugged in.

Then, at the bottom of the list:

USB16 0763:2012 001 Pro:0,0 capture and playback ()
USB16 0763:2012 001 Pro:1,0 capture and playback ()

So this is how I was getting garbage in my device list -- failure to match
previously encountered devices. ID and bus are the same but it went and made a
new device for it.

What's up? A bad string compare somewhere? Looks like a bug.

I mean, I guess I can set up a script to purge autojack.json from time to time,
but that seems extreme.

FWIW (finally found by grepping the whole user folder for a USB device's ID):
It's ~/.config/autojack/autojack.json

[ubuntu-studio-users] Studio Controls: Possible to clear the list of USB devices?

2024-03-10 Thread James Harkins
There's a lot of junk in my Studio Controls USB device list. I wouldn't mind to
just delete all of them and let entries get added back in when devices are
plugged in. (I don't need to keep index positions -- totally fine to start from
scratch.)

How to do that? I guess they persist in a config file somewhere but it didn't
leap out of .config/ at me.

FWIW, second follow-up, now I've been running XFCE for almost a week and it
seems generally more stable -- even the touchpad, which frequently acted up
under Plasma, seems better. (Knocking on something b/c as we all know, the
second you say "it seems pretty good" is when the trouble starts, lol.)

Happy to hear that other people on other machines are having a good time with
Plasma, but, also happy that I can switch out the desktop shell.

First, I would like to say that, apart from the static I've been experiencing
with Plasma, your efforts have been spectacularly successful!

The reason why I didn't think to check the website is... simply... because, in
the past, I never needed to. I downloaded the installer and everything Just
Worked.

So let me start off by saying, thank you for that.

(So, then, I should also apologize for the heat in my messages. I've been too
critical and not appreciative enough. For that, I did deserve to get a rant.)

With that said...

I'll just point out that there is a missing step 4: Spend half a day
reinstalling software. This is the part that is perhaps easy (perhaps not), and
definitely not quick. (As I stated earlier, I had to do this recently... it
really did take that long. Started around 2pm, finished after 6pm.)

In any case... Plasma was stable yesterday (though I didn't use the machine
that much), so I'll keep monitoring the situation and gradually put stuff in
place in XFCE as a backup.

So far, more or less OK with that -- it even preserved some custom keyboard and
FCITX settings!

I had to log back into Plasma for now, though, because there was no network
connection, and I couldn't find the wifi widget. I'll have to do some searching
about that, but no time for it today.

That's entirely possible. It's a Lenovo ThinkBook 14. I just looked at their
website for Linux drivers, nothing.

Could try that.

Quite sure that's not it.

Another possible source of trouble is the Astrill VPN client app. Very smooth
under XCFE, but in Plasma, it's got this weird, tiny second window that is
opening and closing dozens of times per second. I had gotten in the habit of
closing this app when I didn't need it, to reduce CPU use, battery consumption,
and stress on the Plasma toolbar, and that seemed to improve stability for a
while. But this app was not open when the system froze yesterday (either time).

If it gets more involved than that, I'll try that. I have Oracle VirtualBox
already, for another reason.

Really appreciate the help!

Plasma doesn't have anything specific I need. (This is actually part of my
reason for posting -- in case Ubuntu Studio maintainers are listening, this
user is offering some feedback that Plasma has decidedly not been an
improvement.)

Online, I see https://www.tecmint.com/install-xfce-desktop-in-ubuntu-fedora
("sudo apt install xfce4") -- but, when I asked about this initially, the
advice on this list was to "install Xubuntu then use the Ubuntu Studio
Installer to change it."

So... is there a particular disadvantage installing the XFCE packages over my
current installation? A fresh install + all my software is at least a half day
(which I had to do recently, after trying Ubuntu Studio 22.10 and then having
to reinstall 22.04, oops, so I know how long it takes).

Just happened again. No external HDD this time, just typing into a
SuperCollider window. Suddenly keystrokes and mouse clicks were doing nothing.

So here's a problem I have... a lot of forums, especially PHP based ones, have
anti-spam plugins that deny all IP addresses from mainland China where I live,
*and* also deny VPNs. Because of this, I am unable to register for the KDE
forums, and I am also unable to talk to anyone at the KDE forums to do anything
about this.

So I'd like to ask... could someone set up a user account on the KDE forums for
me? PM me...? Please? I'm desperate...?

I am going to need support for this. Otherwise I'll have to switch to another
distribution. I have loved Ubuntu Studio for years but I can't accept this. Two
catastrophic freezes in one day means it could happen onstage, and I don't know
why this is happening or how to prevent it.

Just went a couple weeks without a Plasma f***up and just now... browsing files
on an external HDD... freeze. Everything frozen. Reboot. I'm just lucky it
didn't bork the whole external disk.

If I wanted crashiness I'd just use Windows *barf*

FWIW (not that anyone cares) but I now believe this is largely because of the
client app for Astrill VPN (which is also causing high CPU use and draining the
battery). I'll follow up with them.

Congrats on the release -- will consider an upgrade post-semester.

It turns out that this is moot -- I ended up trying 22.10 the other day (after
the show), and was quickly reminded why I avoid system upgrades during the
semester. Completely unusable. *Major* UI lags, and apps unable to open. Half
of Sunday was spent reinstalling 22.04 and my whole suite of apps.

So... still no idea here.

[ubuntu-studio-users] Random UI freakouts in Ubuntu Studio 22.04

2023-03-24 Thread James Harkins
Hi, first post.

I've been a loyal user of Ubuntu Studio since... I think maybe 14.04? Generally
a first-rate experience -- the fact that in, oh, 7-8 years I never needed to
sign onto the mailing list tells you how little trouble I had with it.

Last November, I got a new computer and installed Ubuntu Studio 22.04 on it.
Initially, the problems were only very minor, the sorts of things I expect from
an Ubuntu upgrade.

So let's fast forward to 3 weeks ago, when I had my first lecture class of the
semester, and my first time plugging this machine into the classroom projector
(end of the previous semester here was all online). At first it wasn't quite
syncing up, so I tried a few different screen resolutions, and then... the
Plasma taskbar at the top disappeared. The Super key couldn't open the launcher
menu, so... no apps, nothing.

I found a webpage explaining how to delete the Plasma configuration files and
reboot, and this did restore functionality. But the system has never been quite
the same. *Mostly* ok, but I had to reboot a few extra times during the last
week.

The cruncher was, yesterday I had a performance, and:

1. Plugged in a USB SSD... the touchpad sensitivity went down to a crawl.
Unusable. Reboot.
2. 5 minutes later, the taskbar didn't disappear, but it froze -- couldn't
switch workspaces, couldn't switch apps except for alt-tab. Reboot.
3. Fine for a few hours after that, but then I was using the Ubuntu Studio
Controls app to switch the USB soundcard, and the system stopped responding to
mouse clicks or typing. Reboot.

This is just hours before a show... a rather different quality of user
experience from the last several years of rock-solid stability. (However the
show went off without a hitch!)

The KDE community has been only somewhat helpful. KDE Forums ban all IP
addresses from mainland China, and VPNs apparently -- summarily, with no way to
appeal. So I'm not able to ask the user community for workarounds.

I ended up logging a bug report for the first problem, but was told that Plasma
5.24.7 is no longer supported, and that if I need support, I should upgrade the
desktop. But:

https://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ppa/+archive/ubuntu/backports/+index?field.series_filter=jammy&batch=75&direction=backwards&start=300

plasma-desktop 4:5.24.7-0ubuntu0.1~ubuntu22.04~ppa1

... oh. 5.24.7. So, I can't upgrade Plasma without upgrading to Kinetic.

So the simpler question is: does Ubuntu Studio 22.10 ship with Plasma 5.27?
(https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=466586#c1 -- "This is one of the reasons
why multi-monitor handling was completely re-done in Plasma 5.27 to fix issues
such as this one. Please update to 5.27 as soon as your distro offers it to
you.") It seems I need this Plasma version... before taking on the risks of an
OS upgrade, I'd like to confirm that it will really help.

The broader question is... what is the best way forward for me to have a
stable, functioning system again?

Thanks. Again, my experience with Ubuntu Studio has been excellent over the
years, which is why I'm caught a bit off guard with these recent troubles.
