Have you tried Kid3?

The GUI is cool, but the cli is very nice too!

It used to be packaged with Ubuntu Studio. If it isn't anymore, there
are many ways to install it.

this might not be the answer you want, but its how i manage my fonts:

In font manager, you can deactivate all the fonts you don't use. When

 Forwarded Message
Subject: Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) released
Date: Thu, 13 Oct 2016 15:14:49 +
From: Adam Conrad
To: ubuntu-announce@
CC: ubuntu-release@

Codenamed "Yakkety Yak", Ubuntu 16.10 continues Ubuntu's proud tradition
of integrating the latest and greatest open source technologies into a
high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution. The team has been hard at
work through this cycle, introducing new features and fixing bugs.

Under the hood, there have been updates to many core packages, including
a new 4.8-based kernel, a switch to gcc-6, and much more.

Ubuntu Desktop has seen incremental improvements, with newer versions of
GTK and Qt, updates to major packages like Firefox and LibreOffice, and
stability improvements to Unity.

Ubuntu Server 16.10 includes the Newton release of OpenStack, alongside
deployment and management tools that save devops teams time when
deploying distributed applications - whether on private clouds, public
clouds, x86, ARM, or POWER servers, z System mainframes, or on developer
laptops. Several key server technologies, from MAAS to juju, have been
updated to new upstream versions with a variety of new features.

The newest Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu GNOME, Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu MATE,
Ubuntu Studio, and Xubuntu are also being released today. More details
can be found for these at their individual release notes:

   https://wiki.ubuntu.com/YakketyYak/ReleaseNotes#Official_flavours

Maintenance updates will be provided for 9 months for all flavours
releasing with 16.10.

It certainly looks very interesting! :) The best way to make sure it
happens is to help package it. We try to get things packaged in debian
first so that it automagicaly appears in Ubuntu and for the community at
large to enjoy. I'm not the best at searching debian packages and i
couldn't find it... that is, maybe its there but i missed it... However, if
you are interested in helping us out, you can have a look here:
http://ubuntustudio.org/contribute
You could also reach out to photoflow's developer-team and ask them if they
have plans to package it in debian. In any case i will take deeper look at
it and put it on the wishlist for 17.04 release. In the meantime, while i
understand this isn't what you are looking for, i can recomend darktable

If you can afford keeping your machine off-line, or perhaps dual-boot,
you could consider not upgrading a partition with an older version of
the system, as stated on the wiki page:

Although, note that i'm just guessing here, since i don't know if an
older version of the system will support your particular hardware...

Hi Paul,

we need a little more info to help you:
by 'jack' do you mean QjackCtl? Once QjackCtl is opened, does jack start
once you've done your settings and pressed the button that says "start"?

Remember you have to go into 'Setup' in QjackCtl to chose the firewire
option _before_ starting jack by pressing the 'start' button.

I also have a firewire card, and i hav had some problem due to ALSA's
firewire. So if it still doesn't work after trying the above steps, get
back here and i'll share you my work around :)

Create! :) That is the best way to realize what package you are missing.
And if you miss any package, please let us know which ones, maybe we
will all agree that it should be included by default. Such an addition
will not happen in 16.10 since the feature-freeze was last Thursday, but
if the suggestion is feasible and pertinent, it will happen for 17.04 :)

The idea with ubuntu studio is that after installing it, you shouldn't
need to do anything else than get creative and/or work on your
multimedia projects. I usually install sound-converter and download the
latest blender when it comes out. But that is about it.
Nvidia-drivers... but that would be meaningless if you have no Nvidia
graphics card.

I can't really find any information about it, but since the system
requirements state your system needs "least 5GB of disk space." i would
reckon it is slightly over that. It also says "The USB sticks are only
available in 64 bit version, if you require 32 bit you will need to
download a distribution or make your own bootable USB stick." Which i
presume means that it should be writable.

But hey, better ask them directly: don't take /my/ word for it, as i am
just guessing :)

Lo unico que encuentro es esto:

Pero no es ubuntu studio. (ubuntu normal)

Pretty certain the torrent-files on the website contain a few webseed,

[ubuntu-studio-users] Showcase and Interviews

2015-11-24 Thread set
Hi List,

I'm in the midst of producing a showcase for Ubuntu-Studio users
production to be published in a series of posts on ubuntustudio.org and
its social-media satellites. The idea is to let the public know what can
be accomplished with Ubuntu-Studio by showing, rather than telling.
Therefor the series will be focusing on _productions_ made using
Ubuntu-studio and the _creative human behind the productions_.

The term production here is very broad; it can be anything from poems,
to prints, websites, via video, music and coding.

I would like to interview as many of you as possible, but depending on
the volume of response, i might not have the time to feature you all and
will work in the chronological order i receive the emails. However,
production that is Not Safe For Work will be disregarded. The interviews
will be done by email, and will consist of 3 to 4 questions about You
and your production.

If you are interested in participating, please address me on
pub...@sakrecoer.com and make sure you include links to your work in the
email.

*Do not send me attached files by email.*

Looking forward to see-, hear-, feel your work and to talk to you,

Sorry if i came off preachy, I thought i wrote the exact same thing as
you, except i don't know anything about games and virtualboxes.
But language is tricky. :)

However, i ment to say that teaching how the tools work is a great way
to show what ubuntustudio can do. And in my experience, getting down on
a open OS and replacing the open tools with a virtual instances of
another but closed OS, is vowed to give problems.

It's a fine line between being enthusiastic about your tools, and
preaching for them i guess. It's good however, to have reminders that
the preachy path is a bit an ineffective one.

Have a good day y'all!

Small, digtal-printing agencies have no problem dealing with RGB
documents such as PDF, EPS, etc... But offset printers do. I have to
say, i have never submitted a document i converted from RGB to CMYK by
myself to an offset printing agency. Because of the high cost of offset,
to be 100% sure the finished product gets the intended colors when
printing in CMYK, i've always given my RGB documents to be converted by
a photolithographer. Even so back when i used adobe. But they generaly
charge you for that.

Having the possiblity to create CMYK images with gimp, i would still
face the problem of having a correctly and industry-standard callibrated
screen and ink-jet printer. Not having these pieces of hardware, there
is no garantee that my CMYK grafics will display color in the same way
on my equipement as it will once printed in offset.

That is GREAT! i had no idea krita managed this! By opening any file, it
seems i can convert them to CMYK in Image>Properties and then saving
them to TIFF! :)

Panton is indeed problematic. Since i've never had to use them in a
situation with more then 3 colors, I've bypassed this with illustrations
including gradients or photos by using the color channels and telling
the printer what color is supposed to be which panton-swatch. But then
again, in this scenario what you see on the screen is not the printed
result and it is risky when the communication is not optimal with the
printer.

I should try to skip the photolito next time. :)
argumento: How do you calibrate your screen and printer to be accurate
against the standard? I usually show my clients the demo prints coming
from my own printer, before we put into production. And this is why i go
to the photolitho, i want the photolitho to make sure the image comes
out like the client saw it come out from my printer. How do you proceed
with this, if i may ask?

Maybe it is easy. I have never done it.
For print i've worked by learning how my software and screen works with
the printer i have, then handing over my work to the photolithographist
if put in offset production. In pantone cases, i use black and white +/-
look-a-likeish color. Client is referred to pantone and paper catalog.
But most of the times it will go to a giant lazerprinter that read pdf
pretty good. For digitally displayed graphics, i check with all the
different devices i can.

But truth is haven't been in an offset power-plant since pre 2010, and i
realize much must have happened with the technology. :)

I hope this discussion develops and turns into nice documentation. about it.

I have helped many people to transfer to an open OS, *not* by making
them use open OS, but by making them use open tools. To my knowledge,
the only concrete differences between the adobe suit and the combo:
blender, gimp, inkscape, scribus, are a matter of GUI. Hence,
finaly, once they learn the tools, they find that the existing GNU/Linux
desktop running all these tools are perfectly suited for their creative
work. Because really, the creative work is in the tools and the user.

By having worked with graphic design using ubuntustudio myself, i
believe a graphic designer will find _all_ the tools required for both
print and digital design. So my idea is to try learn your friend use the
tools available. :)

Thank you very much Mike!

I get this feeling I’m being notoriously _bad_ at feeding back on this
list... There seem to be a thin line between taking peoples time and
pointing out relevant issues. In this case, ubuntustudio-controls seemed
very much like a ubuntu_studio_ issue. For example, a latency issue, i
think i would have addressed the JACK guys or FFADO, as a consequence of my
previous experiences. Misunderstand me right: I’m not blaming anyone, or
complaining about the quality of support or anything negative like that.. I
understand you guys with experience and a lot of savoir-faire do this for
the passion and freedom. My point being that i find it difficult to decide
how and where to get assistance.

Documentation would be a good spot for an ignorant savant like me (no i'm
not mugging myself i'm realistic), but i am sure you have noticed my
dyslexia. I would be a burden more than anything.

Perhaps i should work on an infrastructure to assist users in where and

I guess i have to meditate on it.

However i would like to conclude this pseudo-rant by pointing out my
gratitude for the link to the article on how to contribute. I've been
struggling with this egoistic feeling that i take without giving back. It's
a relief to know that spreading the word is appreciated. That is
something i think i can comfortably say i'm good at. I will join the

sudo chown -R user:group /path/to/folder/

Let us know what result you get :)

There are some mp3 players out there, like older ipods (maybe the new ones
too, i don't have any), that will not let you access the part of the disk
where the mp3's are stored without a special program, but still work as an
external storing device for any type of file upon mounting the disk with
usb. I don't know about this Denver device, but i would contact them too if
i was you :)

Hope you figure things out!! Good luck!

Hi,

I haven't tried anything yet, but i had to investigate your question since
i might have to do this configuration myself sometime soon.

I found this. It's an old thread, but it may still be helpfull:

post #8 goes into deatils on how to calculate the coordinates using the

Hi,

Sorry, need to remember slang is not very handy in these types of
context... :facepalmingmyself:

By going bananas i mean going overload. It doesn't push a full 100% over
longer periods of time, but the task manager shows firefox eating
between 95% and 100% of resources. also the sound starts flickering.

I use the java script to control audio objects on my homepage a pretty
simple pause/play button, with an eventlistener loading new url when
sound ends.

This happened to me as i was developing it using jekyll's build in http
server, and hence while i was refreshing a lot and frequently.

I can reproduce it on many other pages with audio tags. Not only my own.
Everytime i refresh such a page, a new playback item for firefox is
displayed in the pulseaudio Volume Control, while the old ones remain
althought the VU meter is inactive on the older ones. If i quit firefox
these items disappear, but closing the concerned tab will not help.

Hope this clears it up. If you have any idea of what else i can test,
let me know :)

Thanks again!

Thanks Mike!!! Your response is always highly appreciated :)

Just to be on the safe side: i am NOT running jack while this happens
Only pulse
Maybe i should correct this line:
new firefox audio output is created.
should read
new firefox audio PLAYBACK is created. i am talking about the PulseAudio
volume Control panel

However, i can live it. These playback instances disappear by themselves
after a while. It is just something i have to think about when developing
my website: refreshing with short intervals is a bad idea on pages with
audio-tags in firefox.

I'll try my luck at mozzilla and pulse too!!!

[ubuntu-studio-users] HTML5 and pulseaudio in firefox

2014-11-06 Thread Set Hallstrom
Hi all,

I don't know if i should post this in support for firefox, pulseaudio,
or ubuntu, so i tell you guys because. you rock! :)

I've noticed a strange behaviour with html5 and audio-tag in
pulse-audio. Only when using firefox, every time a page is loaded with
an audio tag, a new firefox audio output is created. It's not really a
problem untill you refresh a lot because then the CPU goes bananas. It
could be my javascript code that is weird, i understand that, but it
doesn't happen with chromium and when the audio tag comes with no
javascript function (as in standard audio-control) it happens too.

Hope you don't mind me telling this here, and if so, please direct me to
the proper support forum.

Yours,
Set

Hey alex!

If your computer came with windows 8 this is fully normal. You have to look
up how to properly turn off windows in order for your computer to take in
account the BIIOS boot-up settings.

This took me quite some time to figure out on my companions computer.
Everytime it would boot up without caring about the USB being first in the
boot sequence. This is due to windows 8, never realy being turned off.
(don't ask me why hahaha)

is installed in 14.10. But only found an (very) outdated list at

I am also very curious about which versino of blender i included, mostely
because the latest included build was able to synchornise to JACK, which
the binaries shipped by blender does not include.

Is there any more up-to-date list with actual version numbers? Or should i
consider such a list as my first voluntary ubuntustudio assignment? :)

Looking forward to read you,

[ubuntu-studio-users] Upgrade successfull

2014-05-05 Thread Set Hallstrom
Hi all!

Yesterday i upgraded from 13.10 to 14.04
Everything went smooth and all my production tools seem to be working
well. I like the new indicator plug-in, with the entire lit of useful
menus. Even thou the configuration of it gives me the feeling it is a
panel within the panel? Fine, but messing with its setting made it
crash: if i rearranged them in a different order, restarting xfce-panel
(as suggested within the editor menu of the indicator plug-in) gave me
an empty indicator plug-in. Erase and restore the plug-in solved it, and
i can live with the icons being in a new order, so fair enough :)

I have experienced a bit of flackyness on my wifi today, but it might be
my router (my phone). So before i go into that i will test on some other
wifi network.

All in all, i want to thank the Devs for their precious time and energy!
Each and every time I’ve had to go thru this process, you've made me
both happy and impressed! THANK YOU!

[ubuntu-studio-users] apt-get: Data wont be removed on purge and autoremove

2013-12-20 Thread Set Hallstrom
Hi!
Recently i had an issue with my graphics card. I fixed it, but then i
started investigating what caused my problem. And i remembered i had
installed a game, an fps called redeclipse. I have a rather abusive
teenage past with quake, so i quickly removed it to save myself :)

This game seem to be using my Nvidia, so i thought i'd resintall it,
just to see if i could repeat the error. and the terminal tells me this:

$ sudo apt-get install redeclipse
[sudo] password for set:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following extra packages will be installed:
  libenet2a libmikmod2 libsdl-mixer1.2 redeclipse-data
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  libenet2a libmikmod2 libsdl-mixer1.2 redeclipse redeclipse-data

*Need to get 0 B/656 MB of archives.* ?
After this operation, 772 MB of additional disk space will be used.

So i go yes, of course nothing is downloaded so it's really alot faster
than initial install.

I check my drivers, all good. The game is not the problem.

I remove it again, first with purge, and then autoremove to get rid of
those 700+ mb

I get this on on purge:

The following packages will be REMOVED:
  redeclipse*
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
After this operation, 4 625 kB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]? Y

And then autoremove:

The following packages will be REMOVED:
  libenet2a libmikmod2 libsdl-mixer1.2 redeclipse-data
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 4 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
--- *After this operation, 767 MB disk space will be freed.* -- ?
Do you want to continue [Y/n]? Y

but i get suspicious so i check installation again:

The following extra packages will be installed:
  libenet2a libmikmod2 libsdl-mixer1.2 redeclipse-data
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  libenet2a libmikmod2 libsdl-mixer1.2 redeclipse redeclipse-data
0 upgraded, 5 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 0 B/656 MB of archives.
--- *After this operation, 772 MB of additional disk space will be
used.*

SO my question is: how do i get rid of this data?

Thankfull for an answer,

[ubuntu-studio-users] Cooling systems

2013-12-09 Thread Set Hallstrom
Hi!

I have a bit of a noob issue. I have this powerfull machine at home for
3d graphics. It was sold with liquid cooling. Enough bragging and
straight to the n00bness: the cooling system can be tuned in my BIOS,
but is it running at all once ubuntustudio is up?

Pretty much all i can think of is telling me no. Because there is no
driver or software for the cooling installed But could it be
depending on the motherboard settings strictly? Or just running at the
same rate constantly?

What do you guys reckon?

I have tried to ask several searchbots, but none seems to fetch me a
linux related answer so...

Thankfull for hints and tips,

tell you when, how or why, but i will try from the context of this thread:

The thread is asking about an operation that has to be done in _batch_

It is this type of operation, powerful, repetitive, operations that a
terminal is perfect for. Maybe not to make music.

Yet, some people do manage to make excellent delicious music in a

Another good way, is to hang around in the threads, here, on LAU and

[ubuntu-studio-users] An Offert to the State

2013-11-07 Thread Set Hallstrom
Hi All,

In September i decided to find out the total amount of money that the
state of Sweden spends on Microsoft and apple licenses/products each year.

This took quite some time, but i got an estimate answer from the
department in charge: between 450-500 _million_ Swedish crowns _each
year_ (69'291'450.00 US Dollar). This sum is _only_ regarding Microsoft
licenses.

I've also been told that there is a regular meeting where investors and
computer related whatnots are invited to present solutions and offers.
(I’m still expecting the exact date of this).

So i was wondering:

- Should we organize the presence of Ubuntustudio at that meeting? Or
should this be brought to the attention of Ubuntu as a whole (if not
already aware)?
- Would/Could this be a bad thing for Ubuntustudio?
- And if it's a good thing: who is in? :)
- Has there been any previous attempts that we could learn from?

Obviously, since this is in Sweden, it would be good if some swedes
responded, but hey! Europe is a union now isn't it? And Ubuntu is
worldwide, unlike some U.S. devi.. hrm.. devels ;)

Now, let me be straight: i'm aware GNU/Linux exists since way before i
stopped playing NES, that i don't know even half of what has been
attempted until today and also that i have no intention to become some
wannabe messiah or nextlevel Stallman (i'm just a happy post-n00b
computing in freedom). I know big money can be devastating for projects
like ubuntustudio, and i am ready to eat any negative criticism like a
good boy. My interest in this investigation is the betterment of my
community, which by definition cannot be achieved by a single person.

Yours optimystically,

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Ubuntu Studio 13.10 Release Candidate Call for Testing

2013-10-16 Thread Set Hallström
Before i forget.

The result report only allows me to enter Comma separated list of bug
numbers preventing you from passing the test-case or Comma separated list
of bug numbers discovered while going through the test-case. The page:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/ISO/Walkthrough dose not specify the
upgrade scenario.

How do i add minor bugs? See, everything works fine to me so far. Except
the LADI tray. Well, it works, but once it settle in the header, there is
no way to quit it, no right-click menu, no nothing, except for killall. If
i hit LADI tray again in the application menu, then i get a second icon in
the header, and so on. But no way to remove it/them from there without
using killall. I believe it's a semi useful application, that serves solely
as an activity monitor. I've never find a situation where i need it.

However, the test-case thing is pretty confusing. I'm no expert, but i sort
of know my around. I guess your not too interested in n00bs reporting. But
in a way i think you could harvest quite a bit of power from us semi- to

i know, i appreciate the testing and reporting here, but we *really* need

release the distro.. there are testcases that must be passed in order for
the release to be made available.. those cases are mentioned in the
original email with details on how to test.. thanks!

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Ubuntu Studio 13.10 Release Candidate Call for Testing

2013-10-14 Thread Set Hallstrom
Hi!

Still super pleased! One thing i noticed is that the old volume shortcut
in the header was empty. Removing it and adding the new one solved it.
Hopefully this wont be a source of confusion for other users? I am
guessing that pulse has been removed completly, rendering the old
icon/shortcut obsolete.

The new sound menu (icon?) is just a volume fader, and i couldn't seem
to find audio settings. I saw the LADI settings, in the new and
deliciously consolidated settings menu, but pressing it while jack is
stopped told me jack can only be configured with a loaded and stopped
studio. Please create a new studio or load and stop an existing one

If i start Jack i get a bubble saying JACK server is started not by
ladish daemon and there is no loaded studio so a new studio has been
created and marked as started.

If i then press LADI Control Center in the Settings menu, it says Jack
can only be configured with a stopped studio. Please stop your studio
first.

I was very confused until i remembered the gladish program. Which seems
to be where i can control the mounted studio. Once gladish is started,
with a stopped studio, than i can open the LADI Control Center.

I hope this feedback is not comming in inappropriatley or in the wrong
space!

Yours,
Set

I think 'yet another xxx' is in the very deep nature of FOSS (Free or, at
least, Open Source Software), GPLed, etx.
It's something good and natural. It's the other side of the one-app-only
 proprietary monopolic scheme.

Maybe it isn't perfect, but is better. And you just live with it, in a
similar way you live with people saying stupidities just for the sake of free
speech (and is not for chance that 'free, as in freedom' appears again)./

Rivera, that's cool. Without FOSS there would be no free as in beer
software. Its perplexing to the ambitious because free as in beer just does
not make sense, as many of us have not found the bar that offers free beer.
Please forward the google map and we will meet up.

There are definite camps or schools of thought within software. Years ago,
when I was using an Atari, with a 300 baud modem, it was just wonderful to
see a new app and figure out what it does, after breathlessly waiting for a
'huge' 250kb download for an hour or more. Obviously the state of affairs
have changed and I no longer use 360kb 5.25 floppies and double notch them to
 make 720k's out of them.

Without FOSS I doubt I would have walked through installing Redhat on a Tandy
IBM 'clone' that had my first internal disc drive and hard drive. Darned if
I could get the monitor to work, and if it wasn't for the community on
FidoNet, Usenet, RelayNet, and other BBS based forerunners of what we use
today. It could take weeks to get a fussy monitor to work, even if
'supported', let alone other peripherals that 'just work' today in Linux.

Your right no one is calling the shots as to what a programmer decides he or
she wants to create. That's fine in the world where we go out to the garage
and play with the hot rod. But hasn't Linux grown beyond that just a little?
There are a few ambitious Linux creators that have done things and have
faced a backlash of sorts from the Richard Stallman's of the world, who's
website is starting to read a bit like a unibomber manifesto. What has the
guy been up to for 30 years? Adding to the list of coulda, woulda,
shoulda, is one thing I suppose. I try not to sound that that is it comes
 off as unappreciative.

Stallman went after Ubuntu recently because certain things in the lens of
Unity (I believe it was) were traceable at Canonical's servers. He refuses
to see that there could be a price to pay for allowing some level of pay as
you go, or pay as you will commercial type development to happen. I may be
too simple in saying that all you have to do is change the desktop or move to
Ubuntustudio without Unity and problem solved.

It comes down to a chicken or the egg argument in situations like Stallman
vrs Canonical. Without Canonical more than one distribution would not be as
far ahead in terms of use as it is now. Redhat got involved with Novell
sometime back, and there was something else involved with SUSE. Clearly
improvements where and probably still are being made from entities with a
commercial agenda, one's usually with an community version of their software
 that isn't quite FOSS.

I am not here to debate or belittle the merits of FOSS or commercially raised
contributions. I admit like many others my mission is more about the result
of the software, hardware and OS than it might have been back in the
learning curve of probably 20 years, but please don't let me admit to that
 number. It ages me so.

I believe there is room for distributions to focus more sharply on use
whether they be FOSS or whether they have a shot in the arm from the
commercial sector. I think the world will stand up and notice a set of
tools that is fairly quick to adopt, truly helps people along with their
creative goals (or have fun trying), and is less geeky than it previously
 was.

My comment was more about the state of affairs. There are some really good
applications to pick from and the landscape shifts. Ardour I brought up
because I don't think it is truly open source, though the front of their
website says it is. In Stallman terms, its not truly free, as they have
this trap that amounts to a tin cup for tips. Or at least this is where the
terms of the free beer get a bit fuzzy. I wonder if anyone can freely
distribute it, if they choose it for their distro, that's all.

Your right you put up with this stuff, and if you have it contribute a buck

Can i test upgrade my 13.04 system by booting the iso, or do i need to

is, the faster we can download it. In the past I used Open Office, but I

Regarding to the need of RAM and CPU resources it shouldn't make a

IMO Nano-Basket, an editor for the much used KORG nanoKONTROL and
JSynthLib, an editor for several hardware synth, are more useful for

Hi Pete!

yayks!? nautilus messed up data?!? i hope my backup is ok or did i
get all that backwards?

To put a bookmark, i just dragged the original to the side-pane.
I find it delicious because it does all i want and has remedied
everything that made it obsolete for my use. (funny because i'm trying
to remember what... hmmm..? some subtleties... ) And also i like
that there is only one file-manager now...

This expressed opinion of mine is of course very subjective. I was
mainly keen about showing mad love to the amazing people behind
ubuntustudio. :) I'm not trying to say thunar the best option in the
world. if it was, it would have a make the world a happier place
button :D (good thing i'm not a human)

You can drag/drop files from one tab to another, but if you need to
compare 2 folders i guess a second window is the deal. Have you thought
about dropping a suggestion to the thunar guys?

Have a delicious awake time all!

Warm regards from cold sweden,
Set

So is that why Thunar now? Fewer pretties like dual or multiple panel
and bookmarks, but it actually does what it is supposed to?
Just curious. Good thing I am not a cat.

Shotwell integration

2013-05-01 Thread Set Hallstrom
Hi,

I noticed a strange behaviour with shotwell. I make heavy usage of the
right-click send to.. function. Now shotwells is asking me for
Nautilus. Unable to launch Nautilus Send-To: Failed to execute child
process nautilus-sendto (No such file or directory

Also, when i do right-click show in filemanager Audacious is being
launched?

Is this something i should talk with shotwell about? Or is it in the
implementation of shotwell in ubustu?

Thankfull for a way to fix this and wishing you all a happy May the 1st,

Set H.

Party like it's 13.04

2013-04-30 Thread Set Hallstrom
Hi all!!

I thought i'd give a little feedback regarding the upgrade from 12.04 to
13.04.

It can basically be reduced to 3 words:
I LOVE YOU!

To this I would like to add:
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!
Without your hardwork, my work would have no outlet!

Ubuntustudio 13.04 is beautiful and seems to work like a charm on my
compaq Presario CQ57 intel core i3 with 4 GB ram

I started off by booting from a USB, worked perfect.
Then i installed from scratch, because i can live with doing the
settings again and for curiosity, to have a good reason to explore what
available settings and things i need to do etc...

Some things i've noticed:
Positive:
- My display issues have been totaly adressed: no more strange tripple
colour on light text.
- Thunar has become deliciously good. I was kindof fearing i would miss
nautlius, but i don't.
- Blender 2.66!! YUHUU!!!
- All the goodness and more!

Less positive:
- firefox homepage is the ubuntu firefox start page. I get it in
turkish(?) I don't mind, its easily fixed.
- I miss the little messaging thingy in the top panel. I found some sort
of mail alerter, but i can't get it to aggregate my xmpp client (pidgin)
and thunderbird. Instead it wants me to set it up as if it was my mail
client (it could go under positive things too, because with a little
after thinking, i like the idea of not being distracted while i work hehe..)

Thats it for now!

Have a delicious awake-time

Hi Pete!

I never knew there was multi panel in nautilus, so i always used tabbed
windows with ctrl+t.
It seems to work in thunar too.
Perhaps this can be usefull to you until you find the right FMP?? :)

I know, RTFM, but oops, I have come to believe this forum IS TFM, at
 least for me.
Cheers to all who bring us Linux goodies.

I have the same problem. Tried several different mountig apps. In the

I am surprised that Ubuntu Studio cannot play the DVDs it creates.

I looked online and could not find a suitable solution yet. I have
tried playing the ISO in VLC and Xine. With VLC, nothing much
happens, and then VLC will not close and hogs the CPU until I kill
it. With Xine, it reports that it cannot play the file.

I was able to play the ISO as a DVD in a Windows virtual machine on
the same PC, so this a problem with something missing in Ubuntu
Studio. I have the restricted extras installed, including libdvdread.

So how can I play the DVD ISO files I created in Ubuntu Studio?

There are several issues with Quantal on my machine too. Some
issues can be solved by deleting ~/.cache from time to time. IMO
Precise is the better release at the moment.

Thanks for your input Ralf, Sorry for being confusing. My problem
happens on Precise (ubuntustudio12.04), but not on Quantal (xubuntu12.10)

Tumbler crash work(?)arround

2012-11-12 Thread Set Hallstrom
Hi all,

I thought i'd share this little discovery of mine. I think i'm not
alone with having tumbler crashing at startup.

2 days ago, i cleaned my desktop ( (0_0) not even xmas WUUT ?!) and
ever since, no more crashing

I have no way to confirm this is the issue, i just thought i'd share
my clue for some more people to test..

Have a great awake time!

Re: Kernel update dependency issue

2012-11-06 Thread Set Hallstrom
Forgive me if I'm off-side by interacting on this. No bad feeling involved.

I am far from Ralf's level, but I think i understand him in this case. I
do use a bootloader that grub wrote for me. Having this said,
uninstalling grub rendered boot-up about 20 times faster. I realised
this as i got fed up of constantly getting software updates from grub.
The difference in startup speed is quite remarquable.

Now, perhaps i am missing something? Is there any good reason to keep
grub once the bootloader is written? I used grub in the first place
because my bootlaoder was corrupt after installing from the live DVDiso
on a usb stick.

Have a good awaketime all!

mySQL client update

2012-11-06 Thread Set Hallstrom
Hi,

Today i got a software update for mysql-client. To my (quite
poor)knowledge, i have nothing related to mysql on my machine, except a
folder /etc/mysql/ where i find a my.cnf file stating there should be a
user named mysql (id: mysql: No such user).

This update was not necessary on my VPS machine?

So i wonder, what is this client? What do i need a mysql-client on
this music/grafix making machine for?

Thankfull for some light,

Re: mySQL client update

2012-11-06 Thread Set Hallstrom
Thank you for your prompt answer. :)

In synaptic, i found these and removed them:

libmysqlclient18
libqt4-sql-mysql
mysql-common
libt4-sql-mysql:i386
libmysqlclient18:i386

My knowledge is poor, but i do have a little bit of experience in
mysql thru apache and my webserver. I really don't understand where
they come from. especialy the i386 ones, since i'm runnig a 64 bit
system...

Na well... all gone.

I must confess i've become specialy alert to this type of activity,
since my UbuStu 12.04 started to sporadically ask me for admin
password without any apparent reason, in a pop up window. However, i'm
more of an upload person and defo no warez dude so, it should be fine.

first glance, id say you installed something along the way that
pulled that in for some reason, and its still there... id say, if
you dont want it, or feel it shouldnt be there, just go into the
package manager of your choice, and remove it... then upgrade. i
can get behind the argument of not having extra services running if
you dont need them, though this seems like just an extra package
from an install of something.. let us know what you find

Re: Text Display Issue

2012-10-16 Thread Set Hallstrom
I have the same issue. I managed to reduce it by tweaking the settings
Ralph kindly suggested, but since I never got it quite perfect: i
learned to live with it...

But 95 dpi seemed to make it alot better (so used to either 72 or 96
that i didn't even try before today! cheers Ralph!)

I'd be interested in knowing any other tricks.

The best illustration of the latter is to open Terminal. Assuming

 displays as pink.

I've reproduced this using the live DVD on two computers.

Both of the computers in question run Xubuntu 12.04 (which Ubuntu
Studio seems to be based on) and text looks great there.

Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks.

i havent noticed that.. would you mind to get some screenshots and put
them in imagebin or somewhere... also, keep in mind you can use whatever
from ubuntu studio you would like to use with the xubuntu desktop. you
can install xubuntu and add to that any or all of the ubuntustudio
metapackages, or just the audio/video/graphics applications you need.
OR, you can just install the xubuntu-desktop in ubuntustudio and boot
the xubuntu session instead of the ubuntustudio one if you prefer it...
 thanks

Here's a link to some screen shots I took: http://imagebin.org/232123

Unfortunately these images don't capture how bad the text really looks.
They do show the color issue, though. I now see that it's not just pink
-- there are other colors as well.

 Thanks.

Please keep me posted if you figure any clue out :)

As you can see on the screenshot, only very thin fonts get very bad (but

but your screenshot, does show me your distorted fonts.

If it would be an issue regarding to the display mask and other monitor
settings, I shouldn't be able to see the distorted fonts too, but they
 should be ok here.

If I e.g. cut a cable for one colour, RGB (VGA), then I would see bad
colours on my screen, but if I would send you a screenshot, you won't
see it. So why do I see your distorted fonts? I guess this narrow done
 the reason for this issue.
