[ubuntu-studio-users] Showcase and Interviews
Hi List, I'm in the midst of producing a showcase for Ubuntu-Studio users production to be published in a series of posts on ubuntustudio.org and its social-media satellites. The idea is to let the public know what can be accomplished with Ubuntu-Studio by showing, rather than telling. Therefor the series will be focusing on _productions_ made using Ubuntu-studio and the _creative human behind the productions_. The term production here is very broad; it can be anything from poems, to prints, websites, via video, music and coding. I would like to interview as many of you as possible, but depending on the volume of response, i might not have the time to feature you all and will work in the chronological order i receive the emails. However, production that is Not Safe For Work will be disregarded. The interviews will be done by email, and will consist of 3 to 4 questions about You and your production. Panton is indeed problematic. Since i've never had to use them in a situation with more then 3 colors, I've bypassed this with illustrations including gradients or photos by using the color channels and telling the printer what color is supposed to be which panton-swatch. But then again, in this scenario what you see on the screen is not the printed result and it is risky when the communication is not optimal with the printer. I should try to skip the photolito next time. :) argumento: How do you calibrate your screen and printer to be accurate against the standard? To my knowledge, the only concrete differences between the adobe suit and the combo: blender, gimp, inkscape, scribus, are a matter of GUI. Hence, finaly, once they learn the tools, they find that the existing GNU/Linux desktop running all these tools are perfectly suited for their creative work. Because really, the creative work is in the tools and the user. [ubuntu-studio-users] Upgrade successfull
Hi all! Yesterday i upgraded from 13.10 to 14.04 Everything went smooth and all my production tools seem to be working well. I like the new indicator plug-in, with the entire lit of useful menus. Even thou the configuration of it gives me the feeling it is a panel within the panel? Fine, but messing with its setting made it crash: if i rearranged them in a different order, restarting xfce-panel (as suggested within the editor menu of the indicator plug-in) gave me an empty indicator plug-in. Erase and restore the plug-in solved it, and i can live with the icons being in a new order, so fair enough :) I have experienced a bit of flackyness on my wifi today, but it might be my router (my phone). So before i go into that i will test on some other wifi network. All in all, i want to thank the Devs for their precious time and energy! [ubuntu-studio-users] apt-get: Data wont be removed on purge and autoremove
Hi! Recently i had an issue with my graphics card. I fixed it, but then i started investigating what caused my problem. And i remembered i had installed a game, an fps called redeclipse. I have a rather abusive teenage past with quake, so i quickly removed it to save myself :) This game seem to be using my Nvidia, so i thought i'd resintall it, just to see if i could repeat the error. and the terminal tells me this: $ sudo apt-get install redeclipse [sudo] password for set: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following extra packages will be installed: libenet2a libmikmod2 libsdl-mixer1.2 redeclipse-data The following NEW packages will be installed: libenet2a libmikmod2 libsdl-mixer1.2 redeclipse redeclipse-data 0 upgraded, 5 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. *Need to get 0 B/656 MB of archives.* ? After this operation, 772 MB of additional disk space will be used. Do you want to continue [Y/n]? So i go yes, of course nothing is downloaded so it's really alot faster than initial install. I check my drivers, all good. The game is not the problem. I remove it again, first with purge, and then autoremove to get rid of those 700+ mb I get this on on purge: The following packages will be REMOVED: redeclipse* 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded. After this operation, 4 625 kB disk space will be freed. Do you want to continue [Y/n]? [ubuntu-studio-users] An Offert to the State
Hi All, In September i decided to find out the total amount of money that the state of Sweden spends on Microsoft and apple licenses/products each year. This took quite some time, but i got an estimate answer from the department in charge: between 450-500 _million_ Swedish crowns _each year_ (69'291'450.00 US Dollar). This sum is _only_ regarding Microsoft licenses. I've also been told that there is a regular meeting where investors and computer related whatnots are invited to present solutions and offers. (I’m still expecting the exact date of this). So i was wondering: - Should we organize the presence of Ubuntustudio at that meeting? Or should this be brought to the attention of Ubuntu as a whole (if not already aware)? - Would/Could this be a bad thing for Ubuntustudio? - And if it's a good thing: who is in? :) - Has there been any previous attempts that we could learn from? Obviously, since this is in Sweden, it would be good if some swedes responded, but hey! Europe is a union now isn't it? And Ubuntu is worldwide, unlike some U.S. devi.. hrm.. devels ;) Now, let me be straight: i'm aware GNU/Linux exists since way before i stopped playing NES, that i don't know even half of what has been attempted until today and also that i have no intention to become some wannabe messiah or nextlevel Stallman (i'm just a happy post-n00b computing in freedom). Before i forget. The result report only allows me to enter Comma separated list of bug numbers preventing you from passing the test-case or Comma separated list of bug numbers discovered while going through the test-case. The page: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/ISO/Walkthrough dose not specify the upgrade scenario. How do i add minor bugs? See, everything works fine to me so far. Except the LADI tray. Well, it works, but once it settle in the header, there is no way to quit it, no right-click menu, no nothing, except for killall. If i hit LADI tray again in the application menu, then i get a second icon in the header, and so on. But no way to remove it/them from there without using killall. I believe it's a semi useful application, that serves solely as an activity monitor. I've never find a situation where i need it. However, the test-case thing is pretty confusing. I'm no expert, but i sort of know my around. I guess your not too interested in n00bs reporting. But in a way i think you could harvest quite a bit of power from us semi- to fulln00bs with hunger for cutting edge, using a slightly more consolidated test reporting interface. Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Ubuntu Studio 13.10 Release Candidate Call for Testing
Hi! Still super pleased! One thing i noticed is that the old volume shortcut in the header was empty. Removing it and adding the new one solved it. Hopefully this wont be a source of confusion for other users? I am guessing that pulse has been removed completly, rendering the old icon/shortcut obsolete. The new sound menu (icon?) is just a volume fader, and i couldn't seem to find audio settings. I saw the LADI settings, in the new and deliciously consolidated settings menu, but pressing it while jack is stopped told me jack can only be configured with a loaded and stopped studio. Please create a new studio or load and stop an existing one If i start Jack i get a bubble saying JACK server is started not by ladish daemon and there is no loaded studio so a new studio has been created and marked as started. If i then press LADI Control Center in the Settings menu, it says Jack can only be configured with a stopped studio. Please stop your studio first. I was very confused until i remembered the gladish program. Which seems to be where i can control the mounted studio. Once gladish is started, with a stopped studio, than i can open the LADI Control Center. I hope this feedback is not comming in inappropriatley or in the wrong space! Without FOSS there would be no free as in beer software. Its perplexing to the ambitious because free as in beer just does not make sense, as many of us have not found the bar that offers free beer. Please forward the google map and we will meet up. There are definite camps or schools of thought within software. Years ago, when I was using an Atari, with a 300 baud modem, it was just wonderful to see a new app and figure out what it does, after breathlessly waiting for a 'huge' 250kb download for an hour or more. Obviously the state of affairs have changed and I no longer use 360kb 5.25 floppies and double notch them to make 720k's out of them. Without FOSS I doubt I would have walked through installing Redhat on a Tandy IBM 'clone' that had my first internal disc drive and hard drive. Darned if I could get the monitor to work, and if it wasn't for the community on FidoNet, Usenet, RelayNet, and other BBS based forerunners of what we use today. It could take weeks to get a fussy monitor to work, even if 'supported', let alone other peripherals that 'just work' today in Linux. Your right no one is calling the shots as to what a programmer decides he or she wants to create. That's fine in the world where we go out to the garage and play with the hot rod. But hasn't Linux grown beyond that just a little? There are a few ambitious Linux creators that have done things and have faced a backlash of sorts from the Richard Stallman's of the world, who's website is starting to read a bit like a unibomber manifesto. What has the guy been up to for 30 years? Adding to the list of coulda, woulda, shoulda, is one thing I suppose. I try not to sound that that is it comes off as unappreciative. Stallman went after Ubuntu recently because certain things in the lens of Unity (I believe it was) were traceable at Canonical's servers. He refuses to see that there could be a price to pay for allowing some level of pay as you go, or pay as you will commercial type development to happen. I may be too simple in saying that all you have to do is change the desktop or move to Ubuntustudio without Unity and problem solved. It comes down to a chicken or the egg argument in situations like Stallman vrs Canonical. Without Canonical more than one distribution would not be as far ahead in terms of use as it is now. Redhat got involved with Novell sometime back, and there was something else involved with SUSE. Clearly improvements where and probably still are being made from entities with a commercial agenda, one's usually with an community version of their software that isn't quite FOSS. I am not here to debate or belittle the merits of FOSS or commercially raised contributions. I admit like many others my mission is more about the result of the software, hardware and OS than it might have been back in the learning curve of probably 20 years, but please don't let me admit to that number. It ages me so. I believe there is room for distributions to focus more sharply on use whether they be FOSS or whether they have a shot in the arm from the commercial sector. I think the world will stand up and notice a set of tools that is fairly quick to adopt, truly helps people along with their creative goals (or have fun trying), and is less geeky than it previously was. My comment was more about the state of affairs. There are some really good applications to pick from and the landscape shifts. Ardour I brought up because I don't think it is truly open source, though the front of their website says it is. In Stallman terms, its not truly free, as they have this trap that amounts to a tin cup for tips. Or at least this is where the terms of the free beer get a bit fuzzy. I wonder if anyone can freely distribute it, if they choose it for their distro, that's all. Your right you put up with this stuff, and if you have it contribute a buck to Paul Davis, because he

Re: Party like it's 13.04
Hi Pete! yayks!? nautilus messed up data?!? i hope my backup is ok or did i get all that backwards? To put a bookmark, i just dragged the original to the side-pane. I find it delicious because it does all i want and has remedied everything that made it obsolete for my use. (funny because i'm trying to remember what... hmmm..? some subtleties... ) And also i like that there is only one file-manager now... This expressed opinion of mine is of course very subjective. I was mainly keen about showing mad love to the amazing people behind ubuntustudio. :) I'm not trying to say thunar the best option in the world. if it was, it would have a make the world a happier place button :D (good thing i'm not a human) You can drag/drop files from one tab to another, but if you need to compare 2 folders i guess a second window is the deal. Have you thought about dropping a suggestion to the thunar guys? Have a delicious awake time all! Set says he finds Thunar has become deliciously good. I haven't pushed Thunar very hard yet (no huge directories moved between machines or onto external drives) but I assume from comments like Set's that Thunar will not break like Nautilus. Nautilus never lost any data, but only because I paid attention to pick up all the pieces when it broke, which it did plenty often. I thought it was my hardware until I saw that Nautilus got fired. So is that why Thunar now? Fewer pretties like dual or multiple panel and bookmarks, but it actually does what it is supposed to? Just curious. Good thing I am not a cat. Party like it's 13.04
Hi all!! I thought i'd give a little feedback regarding the upgrade from 12.04 to 13.04. It can basically be reduced to 3 words: I LOVE YOU! To this I would like to add: THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! Without your hardwork, my work would have no outlet! Ubuntustudio 13.04 is beautiful and seems to work like a charm on my compaq Presario CQ57 intel core i3 with 4 GB ram I started off by booting from a USB, worked perfect. Then i installed from scratch, because i can live with doing the settings again and for curiosity, to have a good reason to explore what available settings and things i need to do etc... Some things i've noticed: Positive: - My display issues have been totaly adressed: no more strange tripple colour on light text. - Thunar has become deliciously good. I was kindof fearing i would miss nautlius, but i don't. - Blender 2.66!! YUHUU!!! - All the goodness and more! Less positive: - firefox homepage is the ubuntu firefox start page. I get it in turkish(?) I don't mind, its easily fixed. - I miss the little messaging thingy in the top panel. I found some sort of mail alerter, but i can't get it to aggregate my xmpp client (pidgin) and thunderbird. Instead it wants me to set it up as if it was my mail client (it could go under positive things too, because with a little after thinking, i like the idea of not being distracted while i work hehe..) Re: Kernel update dependency issue
Forgive me if I'm off-side by interacting on this. No bad feeling involved. I am far from Ralf's level, but I think i understand him in this case. I do use a bootloader that grub wrote for me. Having this said, uninstalling grub rendered boot-up about 20 times faster. I realised this as i got fed up of constantly getting software updates from grub. The difference in startup speed is quite remarquable. Now, perhaps i am missing something? Is there any good reason to keep grub once the bootloader is written? I used grub in the first place because my bootlaoder was corrupt after installing from the live DVDiso on a usb stick. I really don't understand where they come from. especialy the i386 ones, since i'm runnig a 64 bit system... Na well... all gone. I must confess i've become specialy alert to this type of activity, since my UbuStu 12.04 started to sporadically ask me for admin password without any apparent reason, in a pop up window.
