Hartmut, have you ever been to hydrogenaudio.org ?
The site is mainly about lossless and lossy audio formats but also a lot
about listening tests, and how to do them properly.
I think many people in that forum would love to see
proper double-blind-test results that show that you can hear the
difference between for example 24/96 and 16/44.1.

Best Regards

I never understood what makes people love the crackles. Ever since I
spinned my first record in the early 80ies (chsh - zombies walk the
list again har harr ha) crackles and noise where enemy number one. I
accept them as unevitable if I listen to my australian copy of masters
of the universe made in 1974 and bought for less then 20E, but they are
definitely NOT what I like about listening to vinyl!

> A proper 24/96 digital recording can capture the same frequency range as

24/96 is not available on CD - if it would be, this certainly would make
a difference. If I listen to a recording I made at 96KHz in Ardour and
compare it A-B with an 44.1KHz/16bit CD I exported from the very same
session the difference is evident.

> (well, it exceeds a human's ability to tell the difference, there
> are limits to what we can hear)

Frequency range is not everything. Even though 96KHz tend to sound more
brilliant then 44.1 CD the main difference and the one big advantage of
vinyl is dynamics. The dynamics of sonar waves cannot be described
correctly in a simple digital model. They cannot be reproduced exactly
by a microgroove record also but the model of the microgroove provides a
very good analogy - it is similar to sonar waves by its nature.

> and therefore be indistinguishable from
> vinyl

LP does not sound more brilliant then 24/96 but played with a capable
equipment (stereo plus turntable for about 500E 2nd hand), it can reveal
more room and details.

Re: Petition to save HDDVD

2008-02-15 Thread Timothy Crabtree
I would enjoy hearing an explanation...

How can prolonging a format war and the added consumer confusion that came
with it be helpful to Linux?

More importantly, I have a BD-ROM drive on my computer, which runs on Ubuntu
Studio 90% of the time. How would HD-DVD possibly be beneficial to me? I'm
selfish. Therefore, I don't much care about formats that I can't use.

Petitions won't save HD-DVD. Toshiba is just about to give up. It's
over.

I'm sort of in the vinyl camp for nostalgic reasons. The only way I can
experience vinyl today is digital recordings of analog cassette recordings of
vinyl LPs, and I still think the vinyl versions sound warmer, and more
comforting. It can't be the technology. It must be the crackles.

I am very disappointed that Sony have won this war. A lot of their gear,
particularly their minidisc range was very good quality, but they are wy to
proprietary. If they really wanted us to run Linux well on the PS3, they would
have given us proper access to othe ehardrware /GPU etc.

I am very disappointed that Sony have won this war, and don't intend to give
them another cent. Their minidisc, as well as other gear was great, but too
proprietary. If they really believed in Linux/wanted to support Linux, more of
PS3's hardware would be accessible eIMO.

I'll stick with DVD for now, until I have to change. Hopefully flash will be a
more viable option then.

Don't know since I still buy actual CDs to make my own MP3s. Also,
Amarok manages my iPod just fine.

I am not a fan of Apple and am suspicious of them anyway.

Pretty much, although supposedly they're expanding daily.

Steve Wozniak (co-founder): "What are we doing tonight Steve?"
Steve Jobbs: "the same thing we do every night Pinkie - trying to take over
the music world!"

I'll get me coat

Here's their next attempt:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/02/08/riaa_wants_filters_for_end_users/

*RIAA chief calls for copyright filters on PCs*

*By deception or force if necessary*

By Austin Modine

Published Friday 8th February 2008 01:36 GMT

When is a virus not a virus? When its sending your personal data to the
Recording Industry Association of America, silly.

Internet advocacy website Public Knowledge
 has posted a highlight reel
from the State of the Net Conference, where RIAA boss Cary Sherman
suggests that internet filtering sorely lacks the personal touch of spyware.

While ISP-level filtering dragnets such as those proposed by AT&T

have their way of catching the sloppier digital music thieves

out there, the technology is more-or-less bypassed by basic file encryption.

That's why Sherman recommends finding a way to install filtering
software directly onto people's home PCs.

"One could have a filter on the end-user's computer that would actually
eliminate any benefit from encryption. Because if you want to hear it
[the music], you would need to decrypt it. At that point the filter
could work," said Sherman.

"Why would somebody want to put that on their machine? They wouldn't
likely want to do that," mused Sherman.

Why indeed?

"They'd do that when it benefits them such as for viruses and so on and
so forth. But that's the sort of thing that could be enforced whether at
the modem or something that's put in by an ISP."

Ah, trickery. But perhaps you'll need some rationalization so it doesn't
sound like your average run-of-the-mill nefarious spyware.

I don't think you should underestimate the educational benefit of these
kind of things. A lot of this is basically letting people know that what
you're doing here is not OK.

Education. Perfect. If history is any judge, we're sure the RIAA's legal
department will find a very reasonable and scholarly way of setting a
person back on the straight and narrow. Meanwhile the vast majority who
don't steal music will be happy knowing the RIAA is scanning every
packet of their incoming data in the name of academia.

Catch the highlights here . Or
see the full conference here

(watching an hour of streaming Real Player video is done at your own
risk). ®

Well they are coming down so I'll get a PS3 this summer and use that for
movies.

We're only suckers if we let ourselves. CDs aren't going anywhere soon.
No matter how grim the industry likes to portray itself. CDs IMHO are
perfect. They can try to come out with supposed "better" formats but it
will only be in a effort to further copy-protection.

This why I skipped over DVD entirely. I've been following HDTV too long
to amass a huge DVD collection only to buy it again. I knew I would. ;)

But seriously, gone are the days when a standard is around for 20, 30,
50 years like SDTV. Industry will continue to try to give us a perceived
"latest and greatest". Just the way it works. :P Vote with your
.

They will become cheap enough as soon as everyone replaces ALL of their DVD's
with
Blu Ray or HDDVD. And we're all suckers so we will end up replacing our whole
libraries
with the new technology. I can't wait for the new audio format to come out so
I can
purchase Dark Side of the Moon for the 5th time (first four - Vinyl, Cassette,
CD and MP3).
Also can't wait to purchase Apocalypse Now again, VHS, Beta, DVD and now
what... I guess
I'll get it on Blu Ray AND HDDVD so I can compare them and argue with my
friends. How about
we start a petition to not change from DVD. We're all suckers.

When is everybody going to realize spinning a disc is old school?...
flash memories are the new trend. Just give them a few years to become
dead cheap like their predeccesors.

I have an HDDVD player (that they basically used to sweeten the deal on
a 50 inch DLP). It upconverts SD to HD so well that I don't really care
about buying the higher priced hi-def discs. Letterbox SD looks good
enough. I use my DVD player almost exclusively for concerts and music
vids, the sound is much more important to me.
