But what would we do without SuperCollider? ;)

My C++ was so old I had no idea what the STL was, and I had never done any GUI
programming to speak of at all. (I did attempt to port an old DOS app to
Windows using Turbo Pascal for Windows and OWL, but it was enough of a train
wreck to make me put away my compilers for the next 10 years or so, and just
play luser.)

I found QT surprisingly easy to put together. I have trouble with layouts.
People are always having to clean up my layouts. But any toolkit that can
get a total clueless dumbass like me up and writing dialog boxes in a single
evening is pretty impressive to me. Best of all, unlike that Windows fiasco,
the code I write now doesn't send program execution into the data strings.
The moment I decided to hang it up all those years ago was when I started
tracing through my program opcode by opcode, and I finally realized that
something like "Press any key" was translating to JMP xx, where xx
was about "any" or so. I finally figured out the infinite loop, but never
had any clue why the hell that was happening. Time to quit.

QT made relevant as a programmer again, and I'm grateful for that.

But I'll take back my "I hate GNOME" remarks, for the record. I know better
than to be a dick toward another project in public, and regret my misdeed.

Unless the project is Emacs. I think it's always acceptable to be a dick
toward Emacs.

LOL sorry cory for frazzling your feathers. I also adhere do the
"I can control my volume knob, thank you" movement. Besides, overdoing the
expanding will also result in a toothpaste wave. And the "loudness" subject
has also been discussed in length on this list as well. Does an old alice in
chains track
sound better than any recent "nu-metal" track? absolutely, by a million fold!
who cares if I have to crank it to 11? There is an actual physical pleasure
related
to wanking the volume knob ;)

now, with all this being said and done, what killing overwhelming frequencys
by eq or multiband compression also does-when done correctly-
is "smoothing" out a mix, making it less "harsh" and more"in your face".
When expanding afterwards, just do it moderately, so that the rhythm
section still makes the wave dance, but the music following the rhythm section
is not
"out of place?"

please also take note that I like and play heavy music, and that Im probably
already half deaf
from al my youth excesses, and I dont hear half the subtleties im talking
about...

ubuntu studio still rocks my world and thanks for allowing me to record
decently for
nothing else than the cost of my gear.

section of it."

NO! NO! NO!

This is why we have music where the entire mix of a song is as loud as
every other.

You're recommending he kill the dynamic range of the song. This is
exactly what wrong with mastering in the last 10 years.

I can control my volume knob thank you. ;)

Music is supposed to have quiet/loud parts. Someone would be killed if
they did Jazz or classical this way. It boggles my mind whey people
would accept it with other music.

Not to mention that listing to a whole album this way is tiresome. This
is well documented.

here is my 2 cents about mastering and only 2 cents, caus I suck at it too
there is a reason why I send my mixes to a professionnal mastering house ;)

what you see on your pics is the "sideways" picture of the wave...
so you see how "loud" they are, but you dont "see" which frequency is loud.

if you have an overload in treble (trumpet?), it will hit the "wall" and
everything else
will dissapear.

and thats where the beauty of jamin starts. just click the spectrum view, and
either
cut down by eq, or compress the overload, and THEN compress (expand?) the shit
out of it...

so the WHOLE array of frequencys hit the wall, not just one small section of it.

But seriously, I just listened to the first one. I thought I had a pretty
good mix before I recorded it, and looked at the waveform.

After chasing a better looking picture as much as anything else, going back in
the opposite direction as depicted on one of those brick wall rant sites,
more toward how things used to look in days of yore, I have to say the
difference is immediate and obvious.

I'm not an audiophile, and I barely (as in not at all) know what any of this
technical gobbledeblabber is about, but I can definitely say the brick wall
take sounds like shit. Pure, steaming shit. This third one is enormously
better, though now I'm starting to hear things in the trumpet that make me

We'll title this one "Learning Curve."

This list has been useful for teaching the teacher something for sure. I
never gave much thought to this whole issue until Cory started ranting about
it. This version doesn't make my subwoofer knock stuff off my shelves any
more, which is sort of a downside, but the advantage is you can hear every
sound from the trumpet in this mix (which is sort of a downside.)

I had the background stuff up WAY too high, and the trumpet up WAY too high
too. I think I wound up setting the trumpet at -6 db (it was originally
close to 0) and the master volume in ZynAddSubFX at something like 33% (down
from about 85%.)

My wallpaper kicks ass too. :) (And my whole desktop. It is so blissfully
not GNOMEish. I love it.)

Um. I think I got this small enough to fit on my stupid ISP website. See if
this link works:

Tags are o.k. IMHO, it's the categories that make problems.
If you'd just tag it with: beat, bass, trumpet, junk
it wouldn't be a problem, I think.

But seriously, I guess you'd call this techno improv or something. Damnfino.
I just started playing with a repetitive thumpy bassy thing and played some
really bad improv trumpet over top of it. I left it unfinished for a month
or two, and decided after the third time I wanted to listen to it, and had to
set all that junk back up in order to do so, it was time to record it and
call it finished. Even though it's even more lame than the usual level of
lameness I achieve with my music.

I don't aspire to anything more than amusing myself with some instruments and
a computer. I certainly do spend a vast amount of my time tinkering with
something that I could really live without pretty easily. Maybe that's why
we develop Rosegarden. Real musicians would be too busy writing music to
have time to dick around with the authoring tools.

Wow! Music genres are like some books people have in their night
tables. Interesting.

I think tags are useful, we just don't need to believe in them...

Dance music? That name never maked sense... it's like saying "reading
literature". Or like easy listening, most of that stuff is harder for
me to listen to that hard rock.

Anyway, genres are for people that need tags. Every band/musician has
a different sound. It's good or bad. But just because people say it's
this tag you like it isn't going to be good or you have to like it.

Music genre tagging has gone crazy... "electro ambient minimal
techno", "epic hard rock metal", "indie pop oxymorons".

For a tag-free world,

Luis

Kind of, though I wouldn't really call it that, since I don't dance, and so I
don't write dance music.

I didn't need to. I just did it by accident because I'm inept, and I suck.
Nobody think I got that result on purpose. I need to go back to the drawing
board.

Toothpaste. Must avoid toothpaste. :)

Dance track? :)

One of the best pieces of advice I've been given is that it isn't about the
loudest volume possible, but the loudest perceived volume. If you end up
needing to brick wall it like that in the master the mix still needs some
tweaking.

dont worry I share your pain...I did stuff like that for years till I realised
how awful a "loudest possible" mix sounded.
