UIFe: Removing Gwibber slide from ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu

I want to remove the Social slide from ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu,
because Gwibber is not available in Ubuntu 13.04 and its replacement
(friends-app) is not installed by default. This removes some strings
from our translation template, and it makes the slideshow a little bit
shorter.

[FFe] New screenshots for installer slideshow in Ubuntu 12.10

Hi! Just a little freeze exception notification :)

This freeze exception request is for an update to
ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu that will add some new screenshots. The
screenshots until now have been of Ubuntu 12.04, so there are some
subtle inconsistencies in comparison to 12.10. This brings everything
in line.

Total size of the ubuntu screenshots directory before update: 482.5 kB
After update: 506.1 kB

No string changes, so this should only really affect anyone if you

of its screenshots.

There are two Printer panels: the one provided by
system-config-printer-gnome (used by Unity), and the one that is a
part of gnome-control-center (used by everything else, like GNOME
Shell). So, my guess is there is no translation over here:

UIFe for ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu

Hi,

I am requesting a UI freeze exception for ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu:

This will replace 13 strings with new ones contributed by the nice
folks at Canonical. This is mostly aesthetic, with some changes to
content: we're adding a mention of the new webapps feature and
removing some boring technical stuff. The welcome slide no longer
mentions Unity by name and the bit about Rhythmbox no longer babbles
about "advanced playback options." Sorry to be landing right on the
documentation string deadline with this one, but once this is merged
that will be it for the Ubuntu slideshow string changes.

Sure. We're still four days from the candidate window — April 19 —, so
the current image is (as far as I know) not the final image. It just
almost_ is. With the final freeze in place, it's important to make
sure these things only happen for exceptional circumstances so the
image doesn't change rapidly leading up to it.

I believe the install slideshow is an exceptional circumstance. If
we're showing all these pictures of old versions of apps and apps that
aren't installed by default any more — as they were — it makes Ubuntu
look very clumsy. I also believe it's a very, very minor thing.
Historically these types of updates for this package have not caused
problems. It's just content, after all.

The change in disk space is minor, but I'll mention it: the
screenshots folder is the only thing changing, and it is now 473 kB,
up from the last version (463 kB). Both of those are smaller than what
was in Ubuntu 11.10 (535 kB).

[FFe] New screenshots for Ubuntu installer slideshow

This is a freeze exception request for one last update to
ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu, including new screenshots for the Ubuntu
slideshow.

This is pretty straight-forward: previously, screenshots shown in the
installer were from an older version of Ubuntu. Now, they're from
12.04. And they're a little more consistent, too :)

Yes, it looks like the pot files were built and made their way onto
Launchpad, over here:

Unfortunately, it looks like this replaces a lot of those
translations. So, that's rather a shame :(
(On the bright side, the content is really solid now).

distribution. additionally, the new slide show is an aesthetic
improvement.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
the changes should only effect the ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntustudio package

DOCUMENTATION/TRANSLATIONS
i am unaware that any documentation or translations have been
considered for this slide show at this time.

Yep, it wouldn't be trouble, and it would be absolutely lovely. However, I
need to be really careful about adding stuff to the ISO, and localized
images could get really big really quickly. It would be a shame to get a
bunch of localization done and then need to pick and choose due to space
limitations.

So, as well as localized images, the slideshow needs to get those images
from somewhere on the Internet. I could possibly get away with using my
people.ubuntu.com, but I think the ideal would be a collection of files
near ubuntu.com itself. At any rate, the web people (or the people with the
keys) will need to be involved somewhere.

I'll be on irc this weekend (and Friday) so maybe we can chat about it
then. I'm a smidge fuzzy on the details, but that can be fixed :)

I am one of the maintainers responsible for these problems. (The
installer slideshow finally landed new strings on the day of the non
language pack translation _deadline_).

Testing is one thing that can definitely suffer from passing deadlines
like this. What I will do to make this easier with my project is a
weekly build of the slideshow, including translations, at:

(And I'll make it reasonably friendly to use while I'm at it. For next
week, you will be able to specify the language to view).

As I understand it, Ubiquity and so on will be getting quite frequent
releases up to the final freeze. I am also interested to know what the
reason for the non-language pack deadline is, just so I can understand
this scenario better :)

I understand where you're coming from with the titles, and adding 
tags would definitely work. Still, I'm reluctant to encourage that
outright. There shouldn't be any more layout changes for the Lucid
slideshow, but there probably will be for 10.10, in which case
customized line wrapping will undoubtedly act up.

Also, beware that WebkitGTK on your desktop probably does fonts a bit
differently than your normal browser does. There are some very subtle
nuances that have surprising effects, especially with the title font.
Chromium does something especially weird there. The Epiphany browser
renders things just like the slideshow on the desktop will be. (I
hope).

Of course, if you do decide it's necessary to add some  tags for
your locale, please let me know off list so I can inform you if the
layout changes :)

ubiquity-slideshow UI freeze exception request: Adjusting icons and CSS style

Exciting copy + paste from Launchpad Bug #554976, via the UI freeze
exception process :)

I am proposing a set of modifications to the visuals for the
ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu package. (Slideshow that plays in the
Ubiquity installer when installing Ubuntu).
Some of these changes spring from bug #552510, which covers centring
the icons used in the slideshow, but there are a few other changes as
well.

These are currently seen in lp:ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu, revisions
260 to 261. (Sorry, jumped the gun a bit; I should have made a
separate branch. Oh well).

First the CSS layout change:
 * Title block is slightly narrower. Before, the title could flow
right up to the icon at the top right before wrapping to the next
line. That is no longer the case; it now wraps much earlier in the
line so there isn't so much visual noise up there. This means
multi-line titles should (hopefully) wrap a bit more elegantly.
 * Increased spacing between individual lines.
 * Increased width of content; text is as far from the edge on the
right as it is on the left side. This appears to nullify the net
effect of the increased line spacing.

Then the icons:
 * The new personalize.png replaces the old accessibility icon. It is
the "Change wallpaper" icon from the Humanity set. I decided this
appealed to the idea of personalizing the desktop to fit one's
personal wishes, where the previous icon provided a rather clinical
feeling. The dash of aubergine gives the topic a nice jolt of life.
 * New media.png replacing the Rhythmbox icon. There were a lot of
comments about the out of place Breathe icon, and it was somewhat
difficult to align it elegantly. (Rhythmbox icons are all rather
rectangular, the others we have are square. It looked funny). I went
with the generic Media category icon from the Humanity set because
it's one of the more pretty looking icons in that genre by default,
and it is an icon people will recognize when they open the
Applications menu.

That is really useful! Thanks, Adi. I'll add a link to your page from
mine, and I think it could be pretty straight-forward to add some kind
of form for choosing settings in my own test page. Yours is way more
current, too :)

I'm sure someone will ask, so the reason why RTL locales don't appear
right to left in the slideshow (yet) is because it has no way of
knowing which is which. Currently it relies on the outside world to
pass on that information along with the chosen locale, so when this
appears in Ubiquity (assuming Ubiquity has been translated for your
locale) it will be properly right to left. One unfortunate side-effect
of this is that, if the slideshow is told to use an RTL language but
the translation isn't complete, it will fall back to en but still be
right to left.

To see your locale in right to left here, add ?rtl to the very end of
the URL, after the # mark. (Don't worry, I realize it isn't looking
right yet; lots of fiddling to be done).

As I understood it, the Kubuntu and Xubuntu parts had been dealt with
by their respective contributors. I didn't look into things any
further, since I didn't feel a need to. If that is not the case, I am
really sorry about the trouble and I hope I can be be more careful
keeping track of string changes / making sure everything lands on time
in the future.

However — though I realize this isn't the case for most others — it
looks to me that the French translations for Kubuntu were last edited
before UI string freeze. While I appreciate that you guys were
obviously very eager to get things done on time (I could learn from
that), it's impossible to guarantee that strings will not be changed
at a whim before string freeze for ANY package. That includes this
one.
Granted, I do absolutely agree this package NEEDS to do better with
communication; it has a lot of big strings that need to look and feel
right no matter what languages our users speak.

Hello,

Thanks for your patience, everyone. The new strings should hit Rosetta
in a while.

About the translation deadlines, I'll keep you posted. At this point I
fully intend not to mess with anything in this project except CSS,
bugs and the en-GB / en-CA translations, so I'll spend some of that
extra time chatting about translation deadlines.

We can't rely on changing the image _after_ the first RC, but we may
be able to do something just before the 22nd (instead of the 15th)…

Sorry about the delay; I should have responded to this earlier,
especially since I actually do have a list :o

This is ONLY the Ubuntu slideshow that I'm playing with, though there
are some recent string changes for the Xubuntu and Kubuntu ones as well,
which should probably be discussed separately.


Of the 52 strings total, this is changing 21 right now with another 4
changes possibly coming.

Here are the current changes, ordered by their importance:

welcome.html - 2 changes
Rewrite last two lines. Remove copied / pasted Ubuntu Promise stuff. Say
something interesting.

installing-software.html - 4 changes
Full rewrite to fit new features and to not encourage installing third
party software

ubuntuone.html - 4 changes
Will be changing, though I don't have the strings yet; they're coming
from someone else. I am assuming that it'll be 4 brand new strings
replacing the 5 current.

empathy.html - 4 changes
Title changed to “Social from the start.” Could use a better name...

media.html - 3 changes
Well, really, 1 string removed and merged into the others, so 2 changed
strings are left ;) Mentions music store. “MP3 player” changed to
“portable media player” along with a possibly dubious claim (should it
be removed?) that it works with most iPods.

openoffice.html - 3 changes
Learn › Understand.
“It can create”, not “use it to.” “Letters” › “Documents”.
A little bit of swing for the last line.

fspot.html - 1 change
New, shorter, less insane title

firefox.html - 1 change
In last bullet point: “Add your own personal note with addons” changed
to “Give Firefox your own personal touch with addons.”
Still not great, but I hopefully makes more sense.

evolution.html - 3 changes
Includes a change to title and two other strings. Removed an occurrence
of the sales voice that was in the middle line and simplified the
over-complicated email setup stuff. People shouldn't need to worry about
what kind of email account they have here.



Ideally I would have liked to rewrite accessibility.html and tinker with
the last slide, but the changes are already pretty heavy-handed and
those two don't seem to be in any urgent need.

PS: Even though all the titles are shorter now, I also made this support
multi-line titles. That fix isn't applied in that preview, but basically
you don't need to worry as much now about squeezing titles into my
character limit. The text will just span two lines where the second line
has smaller print and the edges remain nice and sharp. I hope it makes
things easier :)

ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu: contemplating some string changes

Hi there!


With the redesigned ubiquity-slideshow I blogged about, I received a ton of 
constructive feedback. It inspired many possible string changes in 
ubiquity-slideshow's Ubuntu template. With that and some interesting details 
which have emerged now that the dust around Lucid's new stuff storm has 
settled, I have an overwhelming urge to modify about 30% of the strings :o

Of course, this is an ugly position, because looking at Rosetta there are a 
bunch of full translations and some other partial ones that are rather well 
along, and I do hate to break things. (Honest!)

Would it be okay for the translation effort if I upload the new strings and 
consider them frozen with documentation freeze on March 25?
There would then be beta 2 and the release candidates for translations to be 
tested.

A lot of this stuff is about clarification; just small changes. There is the 
odd addition (eg: Ubuntu One Music Store, useful information in the Empathy 
slide) which will completely replace old strings. I'm okay to prioritize things 
and only submit what is really important, but that could take a bit longer to 
work through (and wouldn't be as attractive in the end).

I realize that having fancy English pales in comparison to having rich 
translations in a million different languages. So, I want to give everyone a 
heads up (just so nobody else translates the possibly doomed strings) and be 
sure this won't cause too much damage.

PS: My thought at this point is that it would really make sense for my project, 
going forwards, to be considered a documentation package as far as string 
freeze is concerned. Anyone know how I can go about that?

Hi,

The strings are _mostly_ stable, but do expect the odd change up until
UI freeze. (Or even Documentation String Freeze on the 25th, since this
_is_ more a documentation project and not the sort of thing that is,
itself, documented).

Mostly it will be small, indeed. The Accessibility slide (starting with
"Accessibility in Ubuntu" with three other msgids following) may be
twisted around fairly heavily.

There is a UNE reel incoming, too, so watch for that :)

PS: In Karmic, lots of translations would exceed the space I was hoping,
so they looked rather ugly. Sorry about that oversight. For Lucid the
content is inside a scrolling container, so overflow is handled more
tidily. (Of course, ideally it won't need to be handled, but we'd best
come prepared).

because the translation project is out of my reach. I could edit it
manually via Rosetta, but that would take a long time and would mean I
would get credit for other peoples' hard work :)

Some translations were done ahead of time downstream. The pos for them
are available in the
lp:~dylanmccall/ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu/translations branch. After the
new strings were uploaded to Karmic's package, I removed the
translations section from upstream since it was causing some confusion.

I will move the new pos from upstream, made after October 12, to
<https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu/>,
 so no need to duplicate that effort. I will check on the welcome.html and 
documentation.html pos, as well, to make sure they are all in sync.

It is a pretty major rewrite, but what I mean above is that the topics
covered are the same and the tone remains similar. So, while it doesn't
exactly jive with typical translation guidelines, the previous stuff
should fit adequately. As long as it is consistent, that is. (Currently,
the build script can generate slides that are half in the original
strings and half translated strings, which feels like a bug to be
fixed).

Of course, that wouldn't be ideal, especially since Rosetta won't make
any distinction for the old translations so they could stick around for
a while longer than they need to.

The ones I mentioned have changes to content. For example,
installing-software had plain incorrect information in it, ubuntuone is
of course brand new, and empathy is essentially brand new since it used
to be the Pidgin slide with less information.

To be honest, I am not entirely sure. I'm getting this through Evan, who
says that the Live CD adheres to the same schedule as the rest of main
and we can go beyond the 15th. This can land pretty easily, and the
upload of new translations can happen at the same time we (hopefully)
upload the RTL language support bug fix. The next deadline is, as you
know, the RC disk (by the 22nd, preferably a bit before - let's say the
21st to be safe), which would be ideal. Fitting something in beyond that
_would_ be troublesome.

Thanks for the message, Aron! Be aware that the content is pretty
similar to what it is before, so if we run against the deadline it
should be possible to move the translations to the new msgids.

The exceptions are the ubuntuone, empathy and installing-software
templates. They do have new content, so should be given higher priority.

One other thing worth looking at is the length of the strings. Now, it
isn't a disaster if they get longer, but the current design encourages
the slide text to stay beneath the bottom part of the background's
gradient. If it's at all possible, try to keep the translated strings at
or below the length of the original strings.

shake-ups. If I meet any of you in person, remind me I owe you a

Oh, I wish I had known about that one. I'm going to ask Evan about the
Ubuntu One slide he had filed an exception request for, but that's
pretty compelling reason to hold back any further pushes to main except
to update the pos. After all, changing the msgids won't produce anything
positive in this case... If it's as close as it appears, I'll just put
my pesky strings in Rosetta. Eat my own dogfood :)

I guess it would help if I attached the file. Just 85KB. It should be
possible to throw this at Rosetta and it will process the changes, but I
wanted to run it through here first because I have made way more than my
share of cowboy commits in the last few weeks.

I'm sorry about how translations have worked for this package. When it
branches for Lucid, I intend to rewire the current approach by making
the base strings very simple and, therefore, static! (Perhaps as simple
as "evolution-introduction", for example). Then, the effort of coming up
with what to say lands in the translator's court (where the en strings
are recommended as a source, but not forced). It could play out fairly
well. Less destructively, at least.

For now, I acted on what I said I would do. I couldn't find a way to do
it automatically, so I armed myself with the useful rpl command and
manually converted all instances of the old msgid strings to the new
ones![1] As a result, all the old strings are back in. It could do with
a double check to see what really needs to be translated again. (I only
speak English and a bit of French, so I can't do that myself).

The Empathy slide was an exception, because I feel that one has changed
for good reason. (Before, it was simply the Pidgin slide with less
content). Staring at a solution to this with the impending doom of final
freeze[2] :)

Eek! I just pushed it to trunk yesterday, so the new pot files are in
Rosetta. It can still be reverted, but let's see if we can handle it.
The new strings, as far as locales are concerned, are more suggestions
than anything else. In that respect, there is very little delta
between them and the current strings that _needs_ to be acted upon in
locales. We could stick with the current translations and be happy.

Of course, that isn't always so easy since we have to match up the
translations to the new source strings.
Don't worry, it's absolutely my fault, so I'll see about doing this
myself in the next day :)

Following the freeze exception request guidelines, I could use some
feedback for the freeze exception request I have here:

As mentioned in the bug report, there is a copy of the proposed new
slideshow ready on the web, so you can take a look:
