Translation of packages in Software Center
Hey guys! I need some help finding where can I update the Hebrew translation of the names and descriptions of the packages shown at the Ubuntu Software Center Apparently it is not part of the translation of the software-center package in Launchpad Thanks in advance! First of all I think that the TemplatesPriority<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/TemplatesPriority>should be updated since some of the templates are non translatable anymore and there are some Ubuntu specific templates that does not appear there... My translation model is click based, meaning: how many clicks should I click the mouse until I get the first untranslated string, the more the merrier! Spanish and French must get the highest score, in Hebrew we have the untranslated gbrainy that since the lack of Hebrew vocabulray there's absolutely no taste in translating it... (We want to teach children proper Hebrew before we teach them proper English). When I come to think about it again, there is an optimal translation scheme... Adding a picture of the translated app and linking every string shown in the picture to a string in the translation app. This will be fairly easy since there are many translators around the world and we could help eachother by taking screenshots and tagging strings. This is exactly what will bring new translators, the system will be much easier to deal with and way more accurate since we can all just understand the context. I need to think of a way to make it happen, basically it means that there should be another database attached to the po files which will consume more storage but will make the translation process much easier. Package categorization
Hey Guys! I was really thrilled to hear about the changes to the package structure in Natty (separating the common packages from Ubuntu/Kubuntu specific and so on), and I have some questions: 1. Will the docs be separated from the app packages? 2. Can I assign different members for each distribution? (I want someone to work in Kubuntu but I won't let him touch the core) 3. (This one is a little of topic) I need some help implementing a mechanism that will not display Hebrew strings in CLI (Linux kernel bugs) who do you think I should turn to? Well, currently there is nothing to translate. Maybe we should refer the translators to the git origin found at: http://git.gnome.org/browse/banshee/tree/po Just download the relevant file for your language, translate it and wait for the upstream in Ubuntu to be updated, then you can submit your changes. BTW, Hebrew was updated upstream few weeks ago, I hope it will be OK. The number of new Hebrew translators (Including candidates) for the Hebrew translation is very low, about 1 candidate every 3 or 4 months (most of them are not accepted since we are trying to keep on consistency and quality). On the other hand I get many correction suggestions from people who don't have a launchpad account. Sorry if I hurt your feelings Ask but from my point of view the current functionality is useless comparing to the one I suggested. We can combine them but suggesting a correction really is a necessary function. Hebrew has the same problem as Arabic so I guess RTL would work perfectly and there are Hebrew terminal fonts. The solution implemented in the Debian installation is just great but AFAIK is not perfect. I reported a bug about this issue against failsafe-x in the past. BabelZilla[1] allows translating Firefox extensions in a very convenient way. The problem is that once a translator is registered as the main translator for an extensions nobody can translate or suggest strings to this extension without his permission. Narro[2] is the official translation tool for Mozilla's projects (Firefox/Thunderbird/etc.), this tool has many disadvantages but he can do the work. I don't know if we should use these tools but we can definitely learn a thing or two from them. Please take into account that Virtaal is unable to handle such mission, some of the information is lost along the way. Hey Andrej! I think Wine might be a little problematic... All of Wine's apps strings are in a single PO file... If you ask for my opinion, I think we should leave that to the contributors currently maintaining the Wine translations. I don't want to spoil all the surprise but the Wine team is currently looking for a webbased translation solution (such as: Transifex, Pootle, Launchpad, Weblate, TranslateWiki, etc.). Feel free to join in if you think you have anything to offer, so far the most discussed solution is Weblate by Michal Cihar (Gammu/Wammu Developer), I wish him good luck! Hi Anthony, We had the same conflict with the Hebrew translation. Our problem is slightly different, in Hebrew there are differences when addressing a male or a female. The first approach we tried is using a muscular plural form, I didn't like that approach die to implied schizophrenia, if the user is all alone in the room, how can one assume he might be many instead of one... Not ideal. The rules of the Hebrew academy suggest that when the gender of the addressee is unknown you should relate to him as a male. I decided to take a different approach, making the translations genderless, in English it's something like: Opening file and Closing (Instead of Open file and Close). In this specific case we are having some sort of elusive way to comprehend, we say something like: "Please choose...", while in Hebrew you can say "Please choose" in a genderless manner (נא לבחור, Na Livhor), I can't think of any equivalent term in English (Maybe: Something should be chosen, no genders involved as well). In some cases we are also using another elusive way of writing a gender oriented word that can be interpreted as both male or female when written without diacritics (Niqqud in Hebrew). Launchpad had some issues, I still get frequent errors but they disappear as I refresh. [Ubuntu Touch] Hebrew is missing.
Hey guys! Haim (CCed to that mail) would like to write a review about Ubuntu Touch in Hebrew and he couldn't find Hebrew in the list of the available languages for the UI so he thought that the system is not fully translated to Hebrew and that was the reason it wasn't included so he asked me and AFAICT it is fully translated. Can you please help us on this issue? This should be a very thorough review of the system (Running on Nexus 4). Hey, I don't understand what does programming have to do with my reported bug? Have you tried reading it? I uploaded the file I prepared (ts) to Transifex. Now all we have missing the the Windows translation. I have the JS translation file from Skype, is there anyone in the Skype lang crew that knows what to do with the official files extracted from Skype? I can try and contact Dimitris Glezos and see what we can do to import the file (JSON if I understand correctly). Marking a bug as affecting more version of Ubuntu
Hi guys! I have this nice bug right here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/871764 And it's actually affecting more versions of Ubuntu besides Precise Pangolin. So I was trying to add the other version but I failed. Can someone please explain how can I do it? Hmmm there's a regional issue with the calendar app, there's a mismatch in days (In Israel the working days are Sunday to Saturday for example) so that changes the necessity of the strings. I would however like to point out that it would be better to go through all the RTL languages and change it manually so they'll be exactly the same (Hebrew, Arabic, Persian and several others if available). So once we get to a conclusion I'll go change all the others as well (Hoping I have permissions). Hi David, The pdf file itself contains some directionality mistakes, the Arabic text is aligned to the left but it's directionality is LTR. Any info regarding the Hebrew version of the font? When you're talking about underscore, are you referring to the access characters? Those which allow the users to access the menus without a mouse? Those that have & or _ before them? Regarding Adolfo's request: Weblate has an ACL feature so it can be prevented if configured correctly yet requires some manual work. The Hebrew language for the Weblate project contains about half the components that need translation so it's going to be quite frustrating for the end user, what can I do to enable translation for all components? (I've already requested App Center over a week ago).
