apt.conf does not exist by default.  However, I'm not sure we want to give a
specific command for this in the release notes, as opposed to leaving it as
a question of using your editor to make the change; generally speaking,
turning off auto-installation of recommends is not going to give very
satisfactory results for the average user, so if a user doesn't already know
how to edit config files on their system, I don't think we should be giving
them a loaded gun to shoot themselves in the foot with.

"The sooner the better".  Translation links can be added even after the
release, but of course the longer this is delayed, the less effective it
will be at getting the translation in front of the eyes of the users who
need it.

While this seemed like a good idea, I think it still changes to much
for this to be fun to work on (Don't like shooting at moving targets).
Could you tell us when the absolute last deadline for this, in order
for the links to be in place at release time is, because then I will
do the translation immediately before.

Still not clear.
This option, as named, logically must force installation of recommended
packages, not prevent.
Moreover, other options do have values (APT::Archives::MaxAge "30";), where
APT::Install-Recommends seems do not, or somebody forgot to mention...

Can we assume it must be specified as APT::Install-Recommends "false"; ?

The original release note text is correct.  apt implements
recommends-by-default as a /compile-time/ default; to change this behavior
you must add an option to your apt.conf, as stated.

I would suggest that you use wiki.ubuntu.com's "subscribe" feature to be
notified directly of changes to the page, and the 'info' button on the top
of the page to review the content of those changes as needed.

wanted to ask, is that document "official"? Can we translate it?

You're right, that makes sense. At the same time, we should probably
listen to users if they are finding the regular release notes too
technical - maybe we can review that after Hardy.

I don't believe this is desirable, no.  The purpose of the 'release notes'
link in the installer is to ensure that users can get access to the errata
information that could significantly impact their ability to install, or to
use the system once installed.  Putting this in the same document where we
try to tell users about why they should try the great new version of Ubuntu
is a mixed message. :)

So yes, by all means let's ensure that there's a user-friendly document at
release time that talks up the features; but I don't see that any good would
come from trying to merge this with the errata list.

upgrade/install issues are properly documented, I have a certain
amount of sympathy for what the Italian team has done, which appears
to be to make a more "user-friendly" version of the release notes. I
think it's probably true to say that the release notes currently come
across as a bit technical, and I've seen complaints about that here:

Am I right that there is currently a separate approach towards
producing technical release notes and a more "marketable" set of
release features with the marketing team? If so, is there any way to
merge these approaches to produce a user-friendly release document
which includes the detail of known upgrade/install issues? If so, is

(Maybe something to think about after release is out the way).

Pierre, I don't understand your request, we were talking about release notes 
translations in this thread...

If you need all the po files used in Ubuntu, you could easly get them by 
downloading language source packages (French translations for example) :

apt-get source language-pack-fr-base language-pack-kde-fr-base 
language-pack-gnome-fr-base

Yes, basically we intend as "release notes" those informations... we are
targeting only the final release and make use of informations from Beta
and RC notes...

we are going to keep that NoteDiRilascio for general use.

It didn't work for Spanish, neither. I tried to fresh install Ubuntu on
a new computer this afternoon, and Ubiquity links to the English Release
Notes, not the Spanish ones.

I booted the Gutsy Desktop CD in English, choose Swedish in Ubiquity,
and clicked on the "Kommentarer till utgåva" (Release Notes).. and the
English Release Notes was shown. Bug or feature?

Post your release notes to the wiki using the same URL format as the Ubuntu
Weekly News Letter:

Make sure to subscribe to the GutsyGibbon/ReleaseNotes page and also to your
translation page.

Once you've got your translation in place, send me an e-mail telling me. I
can update the redirect even after the CD releases, so if you can't get it
done by release time, go ahead and do it and send me the details afterwards.

I translated the Finnish Release Notes now to 
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/GutsyGibbon/ReleaseNotesFi , but Matthew Nuzum 
will probably instruct us on what actually should be done.

It doesn't hurt to do the work now anyway, pages can be moved/copied etc. 
when needed. The release notes translations have to kept synchronized with 
any changes in the English version, though.

Wouldn't it be easier for new users (who choose to run localized) to be
linked to their LoCo pages? That way, they could click their way to more
information in their own language.

I have already started to translate the page over at
http://ubuntu-se.org/drupal/node/373

which we could work with these release notes translations on the wiki. Then
your guy could just, at a certain point ask everybody to confirm whether
they are complete, and the pull them from there. We could place the
translations in pages named:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/GutsyGibbon/ReleaseNotes_[LANG] so for Danish is
would be https://wiki.ubuntu.com/GutsyGibbon/ReleaseNotes_da or something
like that.
