At a guess I would say that you have Ubuntu Ubuntu (recovery mode) Ubuntu memtest perfectly normal - when you get a kernel update you'll get 2 more If that is not what you're seeing then can you give us a biot moredetail of what you're seeing Kris Douglas wrote: -- Forwarded message -- From: stepheno2le [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: 2008/11/29 Subject: First time user I still have a dual To: Kris Douglas [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi folks Just trying out Ubuntu for the second time and putting in a bit more effort to try and use it as the OS of choice. [ubuntu-uk] Purchase of camera on the high street
I bought a camera today from a high street shop. We looked first in another shop but a particular model was not in stock. However Currys Digital did have stock. I will never buy such things without first finding out if they can be used with Ubuntu. Last year in another (camera) shop this had resulted in a lost sale. I would take in a laptop with ubuntu and ask for the camera to be demonstrated - with ubuntu, before a final purchase decision. I do know the memory card could be removed and a card reader used, but that is not the point! I happened to have a ubuntu (8.10) bootable usb stick with me and discussed the situation with the assistant. He spoke briefly with the manager and got the ok to use one of the display PCs. The manager had reservations about the alien hardware maybe not being accepted. However it booted perfectly, and once the display model camera had a memory card fitted, it was recognised and f-spot downloaded pictures. :-) I was pleased that we could buy the camera we wanted. Also that the shop began to get experience of live usb/cd ubuntu, and had seen an example of spending power linked to ubuntu. -- alan cocks Ubuntu user #10391 Linux user #360648 -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

Also that the shop began to get experience of live usb/cd ubuntu, and had seen an example of spending power linked to ubuntu. I wonder if they would have reacted if someone - umm - more - (trying to be tactful) - less experienced* than yourself had asked the same thing. I think the shop (and manager) is worthy of praise. Maybe a letter to head office explaining what you did, and how helpful he was to you, and how much this influenced your buying decision. You don't have to spend your money in their store after all, and if they realise that this is a valuable service.. you never know, some store might end up with a demo PC some day that anyone can chuck an ubuntu CD/Stick in and test. Even better, maybe one day they'll sell PCs with Ubuntu preloaded, and have vast amounts of clue with which to baffle _you_ with. Meanwhile back on planet earth, a letter would be grand :) Cheers, Al. * for experienced, read old :) -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

I thought all cameras were mass storage devices now? What was the one that didn't work? Re: [ubuntu-uk] First time user I still have a dual
Hi, The 3 different versions of Ubuntu are probably something like : Ubuntu Ubuntu - Recovery Mode Ubuntu - Memtest86+ These are all perfectly normal. Recovery mode is the equivalent of Safe Mode on Windows, and memtest86+ is a diagnostic bootup for testing your RAM. Just choose the default Ubuntu, and you'll be fine. You'll find in the future that kernel updates will be installed, these will give you another option in the Grub boot menu. Choose the newest kernel (highest number) and you'll be running the updated system. If for some reason there is a problem and you cannot boot the old kernel, the option is there for you to return to the old one. You can get rid of the options, but if it aint't broke. Hope this helps, Ciarán ps. You emailed me directly, did you mean to email the Ubuntu-UK mailing list? Or do I know you and I have forgotten??! I've copied Ubuntu-UK in so it gets posted to much more knowledgeable people than me. -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

[ubuntu-uk] ssh dialogue box.
Hi, if I have an ssh key with a passphrase, whenever I use that key, a dialogue box pops up. Why ? What's wrong with asking me from the term I'm using ? Who's idea of policy is this ? It's stupid and breaks the workflow up. Is there any way of disabling this behaviour - apart from setting up my ssh keys without a passphrase. 8.10 BTW. I thought of doing apt-get remove ssh-askpass but this wants to remove ubuntu-desktop which is a problem :-( Does anybody think this is a good idea ? Popping a dialogue box up could really break some expect scripts. I fail to see the logic of this feature. I really do, can somebody tell me in simple terms what it's supposed to achieve ? As far as I can see, this is the curse of Debian - unnecessary tinkering with a system that works very well :-(. [ubuntu-uk] Steam Linux
Hey guys, I'm not sure if this is off-topic for Ubuntu-UK but it relates to Ubuntu and I think it would be of some interest to you, just as it was to myself. As fellow /.ers may have heard, the Windows demo version of Left 4 Dead has some Linux binaries included in the directory, most notably steam_clientlinux.so. Here is a link with far more info: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=articleitem=steam_confirmationnum=1 So what does this mean for Ubuntu and GNU/Linux itself? Well, a port of such a major client in the games industry (Steam) can only be good for us Linuxers since it will bring more attention to our platforms because they will want to be able in theory to provide support too for their games if their competitors are. What are your views on this? Are you a major gamer too who cannot wait for Steam to port or are you just a person who is happy for any such port even if it doesn't affect you? Regards, Chris. -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Steam Linux
Thanks for the response Paul however I can get Steam to work perfect normally through Wine and such clients. The question/discussion was more of what your views are on the possible Steam port and if you are looking forward to it or not? :) On a side note, yeah I've been away petition signing, every little helps!
