The MTU change is non-persistent; when the connection is remade the
default setting is used (in most cases 1500). You can even try it with
your wireless if you want - just replace ppp0 with wlan0 (or similar).
As soon as you reconnect to the wireless network the setting goes back
to normal; you can check this with $ ifconfig.

Thanks again Jonathon
I am feeling my way here.

Question:
If I change the MTU value, do you know if, if /when I change it back
to its original value later, the system will properly revert to the
original settings? That is, does anything irreversible happen
according to MTU settings?

Might be a strange question, but the laptop is not my own so I am
trying to avoid doing stuff that I could not put back as it was.

Some notes:

The PS3 already plays HD video files, you can access them via the
blu-ray drive, the internal (replaceable) hard-drive or via a media
server network connection (what i use, stream media files over wifi from
my home server). the PSN also has some old games available for download
that are played via an emulator.

Ubuntu on a ps3 is locked out basically from the blu-ray drive (because
you have to be able to decrypt the blu-ray disks) and the cell SPU's
(which means your stuck on a relatively slow ppc)

essentially the jist of it is that putting linux on a ps3 is fun to play
with but its not worth it for anything like a media centre which the ps3
does much better (my ps3 is my main media centre).

oh and be careful with blu-ray players, they may look cheep but chances
are they won't work with some newer blu-rays if the disk key's get
changed and it doesn't update, generally the ps3 is recommended as the
best blu-ray player out there from my more film buff friends.

If it's a resource issue (and not a hardware restriction issue), maybe
a lightweight derivative such as Crunchbang might handle it
better.

The kind of data-mining that Google does on *everything* that you pass
through their servers is not about logging our extra-marital affairs (if
any!) or our carelessly revealed passwords or fanciful plans for taking
over the world. It's about extracting keywords, key phrase, addresses
and other data in order to analyse social associations, interests,
preferences, likely behaviour, and so on, for their own use or for
selling on to others. That's done on all the searches, documents, data
files and e-mail addresses that pass through their servers (including
the e-mails of all the people who post to you, even if they themselves
are not googlemail account holders).

Data-mining is not just about the 'privacy' of the immediate content.
And Google is a world-class data-miner. If you're going to use *any* of
their Web2.0 services, you have to understand this, and decide whether
you personally find it acceptable. I don't. (And, in case you're
wondering, I use scroogle for searches.)

Right. I'm not going to post anything else about this.

But I am grateful to folk who - in the main topic of this thread - gave
me good information about mail hosting services.

Hello, Rob.

I was quite keen to run Ubuntu on a PS3 too until I found out about the
*severe* memory constraints of this computer: The main CPU can only
access 256MiB of the *maximum* 512MiB RAM that can be installed, but the
GPU can access the other 256MiB. One of the 'Synergistic' processors is
also permanently locked out, even if you use the TerraSoft/Fixstars YDL
kernel:

   http://www.fixstars.com/en/products/ydl/

This extra processor can only be used by proprietary applications. Add
to this the announcement by IBM that it has stopped developing the Cell
processor and my interest in the PS3 has quickly evaporated!

[ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu on PS3?

2009-11-27 Thread Rob Beard
Hi folks,

I'm mulling over getting a PS3 for Christmas for the family, mainly for
Bluray playback, but also for the odd game or two. Now I realise the
new PS3 Slimline doesn't support the 'Other OS' option, although I have
the option of getting one of the original PS3 consoles (a 40GB I think).

The thing that attracts me to getting one of the original PS3 consoles
is the fact that I can run Ubuntu on it. However I'm wondering what is
like on there?

What I'd like to do is play HD video files and possibly a few emulators,
but I have read that when the PS3 is in 'Other OS' mode it limits the
graphics hardware and memory, so I'm wondering if I'd possibly be better
of getting a standalone Bluray player (which are now pretty cheap) and
also something like an Atom/ION based PC for media playback?

Is anyone on here running Ubuntu on the PS3?

Ta,

Rob

MTU = Maximum Transmissible Unit.

I'm not sure of the specifics, but it's something like: if this is set
too high the connection can't be made as the packet can't be
transmitted (though in theory it should just get fragmented). It may
be that certain web servers/routers can't handle a fragmented packet
(or it's set to deny/drop them).

ppp0 should be the connection set up to Vodafone - using
NetworkManager with my 3 dongle ppp0 appears when I connect to the
mobile network.

Easier still, they could just ask me! Of course you are right. You
need to trust those people who hold your data. However, I am still of
the opinion that any email is like an open postcard. If anybody is
