My train arrives at St Pancras at 5.00 pm, so if I go straight there, I
can be at the meeting too. I have e-mailed to book a place. Is this OK
 with you?

It was lovely to meet up with you at the exhibition on Wednesday, and I
am looking forward to working with you.

 Kind regards, Barry.

Wonderful idea! I'll get one. Don't want to get caught out when I'm
away from home and faced with an incompatible router again! I was OK at
the Expo as I had an ethernet cable with me and used that, but at a
hotel or whatever, you can't usually do that!

Thanks for your suggestion. I've got one on order!

If you're reinstalling from USB, you only need the BIOS to recognise

My Acer Aspire One is two years old, came with: Linpus; 1Gb RAM; 120Gb HDD.
It's never had a problem running the full desktop Ubuntu. Some of them at
that time did come with 512mb RAM in which case I would upgrade to 1Gb and
go from there.

Hope that helps.

Is he downloading the updates or is he actually just checking the repos
which in older versions of Ubuntu said downloading updates from x

In which case it might be up-to-date and just not look it.

Are you sure it is Ubuntu try running uname -a in a terminal

Most early netbooks ran linpus lite which obviously isn't Ubuntu.

Try Ubuntu via a usb pen drive if that is working fine there is nothing
wrong with the machine.

Wild shot in the dark (well, not quite wild)...

What channel is the router broadcasting on?

I had the following issue at a guest hour I was lodging at whilst
working away from home:

Router was on channel 13 (this is in the UK so 13 is permissible here)
Vista could see the router and connect to it without issue
Linux - nothing there.

I messed around for hours with this, adding options to the wireless
drivers (broadcom too in my laptop). No joy.
In the end I asked the landlady to set it to channel 6 for me and all
was good with both OS'es.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Broadcom driver problem (sigh).....

2011-02-07 Thread Sean Miller
I wonder if there's something about the most recent Ubuntu communication
with wireless routers that has changed, as I have issues with my wife's
D-Link that she was sent by Talk Talk.

It is absolutely fine on Windows, but on Ubuntu (10.10) it is virtually
impossible to use the wireless, because it keeps dropping out every minute
or two.

The other thing that it does is "lose contact" with the router. It is still
(technically) "connected" [or at least the bar says so] but you can't ping
it... like the route has disappeared, yet "netstat -nr" doesn't show
anything changed.

This never used to happen on the previous version of Ubuntu, as far as I am
aware.

Which makes me think that it's something in 10.10 that's created the issue.
