I wasn't sure whether to comment on this, but hey. Google can't find
Red Torch Internet at all, and that phone number is the same as for
ITVET who have a website that has as little information as possible on
it. The fact that they are moving to Oneiric (I presume?) while it is
still in Alpha 2 seems an exceptionally odd thing to do, and the fact
that an ISP allows its website to go down at all means they're not
likely a company I would trust with my internet access.

The package should have created that link if it was appropriate (you can't
just symlink libraries with different versions/ABIs, things _will_ break).

Yes, with traffic management, traffic shaping, or just generally
limiting the speed.

When I was with Eclipse a few years ago they did just that, I had a line
that synced at 2Mbit/sec but paid for a 1Mbit service, so the speed ran
at just over 1Mbit generally, although I had the option to pay to boost
the speed to the full 2Mbit when I wished for a small fee (something
like 5p an hour or something), in the end I just opted to upgrade to the
2Mbit.

So yeah it is possible.

So, this symbolic link would it be this?
http://www.techiecorner.com/105/how-to-create-symbolic-link-in-unix/

readme says that they only support redhat of the linux distros. Instalation
guide is a simple block diagram. Says something in the lines choos folder. Type
this and that, should be installed. Create desktop shortcut... I guess i could
just install redhat... But the last time i used redhat it looked so dated
compared to ubuntu. --

Hi,

Afraid so, usually if you go outside of the fair usage policy they can
throttle your bandwidth effectively putting you in the 'naughty corner' for
about a week.

This seems standard practice with ISP with a fair usage policy but most
a fairly reasonable with the limit unless you're a heavy heavy user.

Perfectly possible. Indeed, a number of the main consumer providers
(TalkTalk, Plusnet etc.) have fairly aggressive throttling and traffic
shaping policies.

There are a number of ISPs who are, on the other hand, perfectly
transparent; I have particular love for AAISP.

I think you may be able to fix this by creating a symbolic link to where the
program is expecting to find the library. As for where it would be looking,
I have no idea... One would assume one of the developers could shed some
light, or perhaps an installation guide or readme file.

This could be two different problems:

1. You're really missing the library. Try installing "apt-file", then do
"apt-file update" and "apt-file search libgomp123.so" (replace with the file
name you need) to see which package it's in

or

2. The software you're trying to run is compiled for 32-bit Linux, and
you're running 64-bit LInux. If you install libraries using "apt-get
install" you get the 64-bit versions, which can't be used by 32-bit compiled
programs. You either need to get a version of your software that's compiled
for 64-bit Linux, get the 32-bit libraries on your system somehow, or
install 32-bit Ubuntu and try with that.

Thanks Tony,

I guess I should have said smbclient rather than smbfs but you got the
gist of what I meant :-)

You're right of course; I did consider setting up rsync for backup
transfers but it got sent to the back of the queue workwise. I might
take a look at it for the extra piece of mind.

Does smbfs run any kind of error checking/correction on during
transfer of data to SMB shares on Windows machines? I'm backing some
stuff up to a Window machine and wondered if I need to run md5sum on
the files to check for corruption during transfer, or whether SMB/CIFS

Hi, Chris.

Well, TCP/IP does check packet integrity and SMB runs on top of it.

However, why not use rsync with checksums enabled for your xfers?

Hi,

We are trying to install a software (coventorware) that normally is
supported if installed in redhat 4 but "should work" on other linux distros
like ubuntu.

We managed to install everthing but there is one library that is
missing: libgomp.so.1. And
we think it's called libgomp(something) in ubuntu (already installed). it
seems they are spelt slightly differently. How would I get the coventorware
installer to find libgomp?

Thanks for any help!
