Hi Mac,

Thanks for the insight... I am still a bit unsure what is best for me. I
love taking photos, usually its just of family, places we've been out etc,
and sometimes some photos for the sake of good photos. I would like to
increase my skills and feel that shooting in RAW is the best way to go to
allow for editing those few special photos that are worth it.

So far to date, I just shoot in JPEG direct from the camera and end up
with about 800Mb of photos to store in JPEG format every month. Most of
these will never require going to a RAW version for editing.

But I don't want to not use RAE at all as I feel I might miss out on
learning more about digital photography and never get to that place where
you are producing GOOD photos.

So I am contemplating shooting in RAW, doing a conversion on all RAW into
JPEG (ufraw-batch or something). Most of these JPEGs will be good enough
for the family shots. But then its a question of whether to keep all the
RAWs or go through the photos and decide which ones are worth keeping and
then bin the rest.

Just seems difficult and time consuming... I store all my photos online,
on my own personal web server. To store duplicates of all photos in RAW as
well would mean I would rapidly consume large amounts of space, space
which might end up being a waste as I might never go back to 99% of those
RAWs.

Maybe, I could store all the RAWs just locally on an external drive and
keep all my JPEGs online...

Decisions, decisions...

[ubuntu-uk] help contact a French group near Nice?

2011-11-09 Thread alan c
Anyone know or can you help with me making contact with an Ubuntu
local resource in or near Nice France?
I have a relative there and may be able to set them up with a dual
boot system when I visit in a few weeks time. However, although it is
possible for me to do some support remotely, it would be invaluable to
be in contact with someone locally who could occasionally, if
important, take local action.
My French is mostly pants, so some English would be also quite useful...

Best practice is to process and archive the RAW files (which some people
convert to DNG instead.) Only produce JPG files for the specific purpose you
need them for (as the compression - and therefore quality - will vary according
to purpose).

JPG is a lossy compressed format, and once discarded, the 'lost' data cannot be
recovered for future re-editing. So archive the 'unspoilt' originals. (But do
be ruthless about deleting rubbish!)

Of course, if you don't ever want to be bothered editing your images, rely on
your camera's software to do it for you, and just shoot JPGs. ( But you do
then rely on the software engineers' knowing how you want your photos to look.)

Nice! I'm trying Hotot and so far it works perfect (although there's no
multiple twitter account support; no the end of the world).

Thanks for the pointer.

I've been using Hotot for ages now and I really like it as a Twitter

integrated. But for me on 10.10 Hotot is the best client I have used.

I'm sure that trying it out won't hurt. I doubt you will have to remove
Gwibber for that; maybe just turn it off or something?

I wouldn't know where to start, it's a total mess :) It doesn't feel
like an upgrade but a downgrade (seriously, we are back to pre 1.0
functionality).

To be honest, I don't think Gwibber is worth the effort. That
application gets completely rebuilt every now and then, so any time
invested on it feels like wasted time to me. I can provide you bug
numbers for the 2.x series, that never got fixed because the application
was redesigned/rebuilt.

We had a mostly functional Twitter/Identica client before upgrading to
11.10, and now we don't. I don't choose the default applications that
get installed (even on upgrades) and I can live with that, but I'd love
that they work!

It looks like the best solution: remove the accounts and set the gwibber
service to not start at login. Thanks for the tip!

Integration it's nice when you integrate something that actually
works :)

I see. And the same thing happens with Banshee and Thunderbid (I don't
use any of them and both got installed after the upgrade, not happy).

Again, thanks for the tip!

It depends on how you intend to replace it.

Generally, it's fine to just not configure (or deconfigure) it and use
something else. Many people have done this for years with Evolution, to
use some other mail client, and Empathy for a bit less to use Pidgin
instead.

You would lose the neater integration into the system that you'd get
with Gwibber, but you'd never normally get that with whichever
alternative you go for anyway - the alternative wont be hindered by
Gwibber's presence.

As for replacing Gwibber in the sense of removing the program and
putting something else in its place on-disk and in the notifiers and
the like, that's generally much less likely to work.

Have you filed/subscribed to relevant bugs for Gwibber?

you can certainly remove the gwibber accounts you have (or just leave
them), and add a different client, but some other clients might not be
as integrated.

I really wouldn't bother getting rid of gwibber, doing that would
probably remove the ubuntu-desktop package, which isn't ideal long term
because it won't pull in any new packages on an upgrade without that.

I just started out using raw and I am just using ufraw-batch on the
command line to batch process all raw images into JPEGs, which are of
sufficient quality to be used for general use, e.g. just as a family photo
album, no professional stuff.

This way, if I like the look of some of them and think I could do
something better with this one or that one, I know I have a RAW version of
it available.

The problem I am thinking about is how to best manage storage of RAW and
JPEG... should I keep them all? Should I bin the RAWs after viewing the
JPEGs and deciding not to do anything with them, but then risk at a later
date wishing I hadn't binned the RAWs... can't keep everything I
suppose... I have many Gb of photos just in JPEG. If I start duplicating
every one with a RAW as well, I would need far too much storage space I
think.

Hello,

I'm very frustrated with the Gwibber version included in Ubuntu 11.10.

It's not only that has more bugs than the version shipped in 11.04
