What you have to remember is not to trust any security on your network.
But, you can over do it. All of the 'hackers' I know won't sit outside
your house trying to crack your WEP to get your eBay password etc.

One of the simplest things you can do to keep people off your bandwidth
is switch your router off when you're not going to use it. Saves
electricity too.

There seems to be a problem with discovery. While blue tooth seems to be

No gui starts when I type sudo kismet, just a few lines in the terminal

Run a SSH and FTP server on the PC you want to save files etc. to. Then
you can [ssh it.s.ip.addy.here] to do what you want.

Vista. Microsoft
has always had 'strong' EULA, like the one for media player. I think my
'eye candy' comments stand, because people will be 'stuck' with vista as
it will be preinstalled on everything.

The question is: will people care about the privacy issues on Vista?

The real problem is that if you buy a new pc or laptop from good old PC
World or pretty much anywhere you'll be stuck with vista. You can't say,
'I'd rather have XP' or no OS at all to install your own.

Yeah, shocking. But who cares? I don't use Vista, don't expect to ever
use Vista. I only run XP to play World of Warcraft. Vista is bloated eye
candy of little use.

Face it, Vista will be massive. This not because people will be
installing it, after all who wants to get robbed? It's $100 in the US,
£100 here! SCAMARAMA!!

But when people buy a new computer you will be getting Vista in it, like
you did with XP. Where linux wins is when people start to discover what
a pain all the built in DRM in Vista is. How after it's been out for six
months to a year there will be virus problems etc.

So, rather than worrying about Vista, us Linux users should be aiming to
'convert' people who get sick of it.

I was looking at a Vista PC today, yeah, Vista looks nice, very rich in
eye candy, but who will care about that after they've been using it for
a while?

The best advice anyone can give, IMHO, is to burn your 'home' directory
to CD or DVD every month, that way if you system does the big firework
you can reinstall and keep (most) of you data.

I don't use it myself, but I would guess that it's hiding under one of
the menus, have a mooch. Once it's running there's most likely an option
to have it start itself. Best I can do there.

To reinstall Open Office use Synaptic again, this time searching for
'Open Office'.

Hi, you don't really need a anti virus, but a firewall is always a good
idea.

For photos I use Picasa, nice and easy yet does all I want.

KDE apps will work fine under Gnome.

Sad to report, this appears not to work for me. The screen sort of,

Are you using a USB type modem? There are a few steps you need to follow
to get these up and running. Check the forum and wiki.

Linux is not that tricky to get working with wifi, you just need to
check that the hardware is supported.

If you do go for, at least get her to back up /home/her/ to a usb

You're right, sucky website setup for Windows media play. I'd mail them

Yeah, gedit is a graphical editor, like notepad on windows. You can
reconfigure the X11 file using, if I remember the code right, sudo
dpkg reconfigure xserver-xorg this takes you through a question and
answer session that will write you a new xorg.conf at the end. But
really, editing the xorg.conf file 'by hand' is easy.

If the CD has a .exe program on you'll need wine, even then, it may

The video, 'problem' could be that you are expanding the window
beyond what the video is meant to be viewed at. If you're having
problems with things like your DVDs playing in full screen check to
see if you have dma on for your dvdrom.

Can't help with the 32/64bit question. Google?

As others have said Ubuntu uses SUDO for admin tasks. If you want a
root password you do.

sudo passwd root

and create one.

Macromedia Flash is a proprietary, binary module (aka no source-

Or you could:
1. Stop using MySpace.
2. Write to the site and complain about their use of Flash.
If they are showing a video then there really is NO need for flash.
Can't you embed video directly in HTML anyway, isn't it what the
object tag does?
Though I did once try using the object tag with audio, it played the
audio in FireFox, but offered no way of controlling it.
I don't see why sites can't just have a link to the video file instead
of using a program they wrote in between. Isn't flash going to eat
more CPU, isn't it interpreted not compiled? Media is one of the areas
where CPU speed is still a factor.

If more people complained sites wouldn't do things like this.
It would also be useful if video could be embeded in a HTML page and
the browser could do what is needed with it (i.e. display it inline
with controls or pass it to an external application).

Writing to them, or rather, dropping an email, is a good idea. Just
done it.

Edit etc/apt/sources (think that's right) and change the word,
'breezy' for 'dapper'. The run, apt-get update, apt-get upgrade, apt-
get dist-upgrade. That will sort you out :)

And there endeth the lesson :) I didn't read what this list was 'for'

Before you do that, have you had a go at sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver
xorg? Sometimes that's all you need. Also, have a look at your xorg.conf
file and see if you can spot the problem.

I've got OpenOffice 2 and it seems to have dictionary, though maybe this

If anyone is experiencing these sorts of problems, it's really
important

to visit http://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/ and search for similar issues. If
nothing is found, it is really helpful to report the issue! That way
they can be fixed ASAP.

problems with suspend to RAM are related to acpi-support.

AFAIK however, it is impossible that suspend to ram was working out of
the box on your laptop: suspend to ram has always been disabled by
default in /etc/default/acpi-support and required editing that file to
activate it. did you do anything to that file? What response did you
give when it asked if you wanted to replace it while upgrading? These
are all useful questions to answer in a bug report.

Weirdly it was working without me having to edit files. I just hit
the, 'standby' button and it did. When asked by upgrade if I wanted
to keep or replace I opted to keep my version of acpi-support.

OK, I've fixed mine with, sudo update-alternatives --auto
usplash-artwork.so then, sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-$(uname -r).
I've also noticed that little gui for editing the grub menu list has
gone, which is a shame because it was a handy tool on duel booting
systems.
