Yes, with traffic management, traffic shaping, or just generally limiting
 the speed.

When I was with Eclipse a few years ago they did just that, I had a line
that synced at 2Mbit/sec but paid for a 1Mbit service, so the speed ran at
just over 1Mbit generally, although I had the option to pay to boost the
speed to the full 2Mbit when I wished for a small fee (something like 5p an
hour or something), in the end I just opted to upgrade to the 2Mbit.

 So yeah it is possible.

I wasn't sure whether to comment on this, but hey. Google can't find
Red Torch Internet at all, and that phone number is the same as for
ITVET who have a website that has as little information as possible on
it. The fact that they are moving to Oneiric (I presume?) while it is
still in Alpha 2 seems an exceptionally odd thing to do, and the fact
that an ISP allows its website to go down at all means they're not
likely a company I would trust with my internet access.

I first noticed the problem when trying to play a youtube video, there was

video (using youtube-dl) and played it with totem. same results. I also
tried playing other files that I knew were ok.

[ubuntu-uk] Minecraft

2011-02-19 Thread Jacob Mansfield
Hi all,
I'm looking for some people to join me in creating a 'Let's Play'
series on minecraft.
It would be sort of like lost, in that a group of people arrive in an
unknown location and have to survive.
I'l looking for 5-10 players, with minecraft and glc (or any other
decent screen recorder)
email me off-list or just join the server:

Yes. The loco team has an allocation of CDs each release and I happen to
have a stash from the recent show. This is exactly the kind of thing that
they are for. If anyone is going to do any advocacy to local schools/ local

For those that don't know Minecraft is a closed source pay-for

To be clear: It's non-free (currently ~15 EUR), non-Free (author says
he may open source it when he's had enough), written in Java, runs on
Ubuntu/Windows/OSX, in beta (price goes up later), has bugs, requires
lots of RAM (ideally), requires 3D acceleration, a net connection. If
that's okay by you, great, join in.

 Hi, Jacob.

 OK, but...

 Using slapd.conf

It is possible to fall back to the old config method with a
slapd.conf config file. The default init script of Ubuntu 10.04.1
does not support this. Below is a modified init script which can do
 both config methods:

 * if a file /etc/ldap/slapd.conf exists, slapd will start using
 the slapd.conf config file.
 * if this file does not exist, slapd will start using the new
 cn=config method.

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, with OpenLDAP 2.4.23 compiled from source:

   http://www.openldap.org/software/download/

 Bye,

so do I, but from the repos not manually compiled.

[ubuntu-uk] iSCSI discovery not finding targets

2010-12-14 Thread Jacob Mansfield
Hi guys, you've all been a big help in the past, and I'm wondering if you
could help me again.
I have been following a the tutorial at
http://www.howtoforge.com/using-iscsi-on-ubuntu-10.04-initiator-and-targetand
have successfully set up an iSCSI target server,
however when trying to connect to the server the tutorial suggests the
command
iscsiadm -m discovery -t st -p 192.168.0.101
due to the differences between the tutorial and my system I ran the command
sudo iscsiadm -m discovery -t st -p 192.168.2.42
however this simply returns blank, indicating that no iSCSI targets were
found.
any ideas on what might have gone wrong in my setup?

thanks in advance for the help

The *massive campaign of intimidation* against WikiLeaks is sending a
chill through free press advocates everywhere.

*Legal experts say WikiLeaks has likely broken no laws. Yet top US
politicians have called it a terrorist group and commentators have urged
assassination* of its staff. The organization has come under massive
government and corporate attack, but WikiLeaks is only publishing
information provided by a whistleblower. And *it has partnered with the
world's leading newspapers (NYT, Guardian, Spiegel etc)* to carefully vet
 the information it publishes.

*The massive extra-judicial intimidation of WikiLeaks is an attack on
democracy.* We urgently need a public outcry for freedom of the press and
expression. *Sign the petition to stop the crackdown and forward this
email to everyone* -- let's get to 1 million voices and take out full page
ads in US newspapers this week!

 http://www.avaaz.org/en/wikileaks_petition/?vlhttp://www.avaaz.org/en/wikileaks_petition/?cl=855181424v=7744

*WikiLeaks isn't acting alone* -- it's partnered with the top newspapers
in the world (New York Times, The Guardian, Der Spiegel, etc) to carefully
review 250,000 US diplomatic cables and remove any information that it is
irresponsible to publish. *Only 800 cables have been published so far.*Past
WikiLeaks publications have exposed government-backed torture, the
murder of innocent civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan, and corporate
 corruption.

The US government is currently pursuing all legal avenues to stop WikiLeaks
from publishing more cables, but *the laws of democracies protect freedom
of the press.* The US and other governments may not like the laws that
protect our freedom of expression, but that's exactly why it's so important
that we have them, and why only a democratic process can change them.

*Reasonable people can disagree* on whether WikiLeaks and the leading
newspapers it's partnered with are releasing more information than the
public should see. Whether the releases undermine diplomatic confidentiality
and whether that's a good thing. Whether WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange
has the personal character of a hero or a villain. *But none of this
justifies a vicious campaign of intimidation to silence a legal media outlet
 * by governments and corporations. Click below to join the call to stop
 the crackdown:

 http://www.avaaz.org/en/wikileaks_petition/?vlhttp://www.avaaz.org/en/wikileaks_petition/?cl=855181424v=7744

Ever wonder why the media so rarely gives the full story of what happens
behind the scenes? This is why - because when they do, governments can be
vicious in their response. And when that happens, *it's up to the public
to stand up for our democratic rights to a free press and freedom of
expression. Never has there been a more vital time for us to do so.*

 With hope,

I found that the biggest issue with Kannel was getting my head around the
config. Fortunately the user guide was pretty good:
 http://www.kannel.org/download/kannel-userguide-snapshot/userguide.html#AEN425

you can configure Kannel to fire a notification at a URL when a message is
received (also supports keyword routing). Then it would be a simple task to
write a PHP script to turn the incoming message into an email.

I have no idea what you have tried already, but in order to operate the
modem and route incoming messages you'll need to configure the following
groups in the config file, and there are examples to help you on the link
 above:

 core
 modems
 smsc
 smsbox
 smsbox-route
 sms-service

I think that's all, and really should only take a few hours to get it done.

I've seen this happen before if php was installed after, or at the same
time as Apache. You need to restart the apache server for it to start
 serving php pages.

Once you visit it with firefox once, it's now in firefox's cache, so it
will always offer you to download that page from now on, even if you
restarted your apache server. You might need to completely clear out
firefox's cache, or try from a different computer.

Now, if I remember correctly, you do need to enable the serial port as it's
 not enabled by default.

Ah yes, you need to install setserial using the apt tool of your choice as
 per here:
 http://ccollins.wordpress.com/2007/07/17/serial-port-jiggery-pokery/

I would imagine that the modem will need a driver or at least a bit of port
voodoo which will be hard to work out until you can see it.

gconftool-2 --type=string -s /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename
/full/path/to/image/file

I have worked this into a basic shell script:

time=$1
# time to wait between changing the background in secs
while [ : ]
 do
 for filepath in `cat list`
 # list is a list of all files in the backgrounds directory and is the only
other non-image file in the folder
  do
  echo $filepath
  # for debug
  gconftool-2 --type=string -s /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename
“$filepath”
  sleep $time
  done
 done

however allthough this sets the value (I can see it in the xml configuration
file with emacs) the background simply goes to the set colour not the image.
is there another value I need to get the background as an image? or is there
something wrong with my script? all help appreciated.

IDE DVD-R drive and an IDE drive caddy (as slave and master) so I can
swap storage drives between three desktop pcs.

One of the SATA drives is Windows 2000. When I boot this, it finds and
mounts all drives with no problem.

Ubuntu 10.10 finds all the drives OK but refuses to mount the IDE hard
drive saying it already has a drive mounted at the same mount point.
The only way I can mount the IDE drive is to put a line in /etc/fstab
that tells it to mount UUID=[UUID of the drive I'm going to use]. This
allows it to work just fine, but is a bit of a pain, as I have to
edit /etc/fstab before I re-boot with a different drive. If it finds
the wrong drive, ubuntu hangs during the boot when it tries to mount the
 drive that has gone!

Currently I have all the drives I want to swap (four in number)
in /etc/fstab so I comment out the ones that aren't there.

 Any thoughts?

I know, I use Banshee and although it crashes about once a month it's as
reliable as anything else and pretty fast (Amarok is painfully slow,
especially on GNOME and Exaile is also very slow and crashes a lot). I'm not
crazy about Rhythmbox but it works OK. I tried Songbird a couple of years
ago, it was fast but very buggy - if it's better now, I'll give it another
 go.

I used to use gmusicbrowser a couple of years ago because I have a huge
music library and everything else was hopelessly slow ( I set up Amarok with
a mysql back end once but it was still not great). But Banshee is pretty
nifty these days and since gmusicbrowser's interface is clunky and annoying
 I've switched back to Banshee.

It can be configured to use either JACK or ALSA, and its ALSA driver
