[ubuntu-uk] vUDS 14-16 May online
Aloha That time is fast approaching again - Next week is the 2nd virtual UDS (vUDS) - http://summit.ubuntu.com/uds-1305/ It is open to anyone and everyone, sessions are online, not just on air, there are irc channels to watch discussions and you have a voice too. Everyone is encouraged to take part, comment on discussions and give your opinions. Sessions are spilt into tracks/categories which have leaders associated with them Tracks... * *App Development*: Alan Pope, David Planella & Michael Hall * *Community*: Daniel Holbach, Nick Skaggs & Jono Bacon * *Client*: Jason Warner & Sebastien Bacher * *Server & Cloud*: Dave Walker & Antonio Rosales * *Foundations*: Steve Langasek In some cases but not all there is a blueprint associated with the session, clicking subscribe on the blueprint means you will get notifications of any items added to it. This is useful if you want to keep track of the progress during the cycle. You can find a list of all the blueprints registered https://blueprints.launchpad.net/sprints/uds-1305 Perhaps you want to follow the discussion and plan for the Click package discussion that is taking place if so you'd do the following: * You'd see that the Click packages session is on Tuesday at 16:05-17:05 -http://summit.ubuntu.com/uds-1305/track/foundations/ * If you click on the on Click packages session it opens up another window for you http://summit.ubuntu.com/uds-1305/meeting/21760/foundations-1305-click-package/ this is how you'd see everything , the on air discussion, etherpad note taking application and lastly IRC window all on one page. * At the top of the page is blueprint, selecting this brings you to the blueprint listed above and here you can subscribe to it. If you miss any session, don't worry, they are all recorded and IRC sessions are logged so you can read the logs afterwards. [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu Developer Summit
Aloha, This week UDS is taking place in Orlando Florida. It is a great opportunity to listen in to the sessions as they are streamed in audio and some such as the keynote are streamed by video http://video.ubuntu.com/live/ If you want to follow a session click on it's details on the schedule page, the rooms that the talks are scheduled to take place in are also the IRC channels. http://summit.ubuntu.com/uds-p/ is the schedule for the week, note it may change due to people marking themselves essential so things don't conflict. You can subscribe to blueprints then and track the years work, take part in the etherpad talks and add comments in them to be raised and don't forget IRC. Comments and thoughts are welcomed via IRC and the sessions take into account those views and do sometimes ac upon them so you do get a chance to voice your thoughts this week to people. Don't forget there is a -4 hour difference this week http://uds.ubuntu.com/participate/remote/ lists all the information on how to take part remotely. Do try if you can to even listen in it's interesting to see how the plans for the future 6 months are taken on board. [ubuntu-uk] Rugby Ubuntu meet up
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 As most people on here I love Ubuntu and promote it where I can, another thing I love however is RUGBY no not Ruby! When there is a match on the TV I tweet it for folks I follow to join in the rants/discussions on how the game is going, but also on IRC. I am also a firm believer that any community is based upon people who have other interests outside of Ubuntu/OSS want to meet up and discuss other things and not just go to conferences. When I moved to the UK I had nobody to go watch games in the pub, I decided after talking to people in the #ubuntu-uk who also like Rubgy and Ubuntu to organise a meet up to watch a game together. Dan Fish picked the pub and I picked the game. Next week on Saturday 19th Match the Ubuntu-uk LoCo are going to go watch a game of rugby over some drinks/food and catch up with people who like Rugby and Ubuntu. Even if you?ve no interest in Rugby but do want to meet people come along. If Ubuntu is not your flavor, or you?ve no interest in OSS but just love rugby come along! Be nice to meet more folks over here. I chose the Ireland V England game! [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu UK Meet up April - Global Jam event - Weybridge
ALOHA! I've been thinking and pondering about meet ups over here, the majority seems to be focused on conferences and while that is great and is needed I miss the fun side of things! So I'm possibly being a bit selfish here but I thought we could meet up in early April and work on some Ubuntu bugs/documentation/translations or help folks with their machines, it also ties in with the Ubuntu Global Jam Weekend. The date I had in mind was Saturday April 2nd. Location: Sirius Corporation, Rivermead House Hamm Moor Lane Weybridge KT15 2SF There is no cost for the venue as my company have said I can use it for open source groups who want to meet up! time from 10am till 5ish, there is a pub at the end of the road so we can go for lunch, there are tables outside, so you can also bring along food and have a picnic if the weather is good. I've created the event in the LoCo Directory (LD), if anyone wants to run an event locally that weekend also FIRE AHEAD! Just ask someone to add it to the LD! The more events the better! [ubuntu-uk] UDS-N Remote participation how to get involved
Aloha folks just thought I'd drop you a line with some information on how to get involved during UDS-N even if you can't be present we still want to have you taking part and contributing. HOW TO GET THE MOST FROM SESSIONS 1- The first thing you should do is register your attendance for remote participation - https://launchpad.net/sprints/uds-m/+attend 2- Have a look at the time table – handy to know in advance what is going on each day and what sessions you may want to attend.- summit.ubuntu.com/uds-n/ 3- Join the channel that the room is set up for, remember each room will hold a different track and session throughout the week Grand Sierra D (Plenaries) Antigua 1 Antigua 2 Antigua 3 Antigua 4 Bonaire 1 Bonaire 2 Bonaire 4 Bonaire 5 Bonaire 6 Bonaire 7 Bonaire 8 Curacao 1 Curacao 12 Curacao 34 4- When participating in the session, remember it is streamed if you cannot hear us talking say so on IRC, keep telling us to speak up or say who is talking so you are involved in the session. http://icecast.ubuntu.com:8000/ 5- If you want to get your point heard and you feel it’s not being noticed, remember we will be in a room with laptops and chatting just keep poking someone and your point will be read aloud or pointed to on screen. Please be patient also, as discussions will take place do not flood the channels with the same comment over and over. 6- Don’t forget even if you are not there, you can still take on tasks when we look for people to help with things. 7- We take breaks when attending, getting up stretching legs and getting fresh air, please remember to take breaks also! Make yourself comfortable, sometimes wearing a set of earphones when it’s streaming gives better clarity. 8- A stream of all Ubuntu and UDS posts made to Identi.ca, Twitter,(#uds) and Flickr can be found on the livestream or if you just want to follow a certain track here is a list of them http://identi.ca/udscommunity - udscommunity http://identi.ca/udskernel - udskernel http://identi.ca/udsqa - udsqa http://identi.ca/udsfoundations - udsfoundations http://identi.ca/udsmobile - udsmobile http://identi.ca/udsdesktop - udsdesktop http://identi.ca/udsserver - udsserver 9- Gobby is used at UDS to collaborate on the specifications that are being written and to facilitate remote participation. To take part, please install Gobby (available in universe) and tell it to connect to gobby.ubuntu.com. You will be presented with a list of documents being edited. During any session or meeting, and particularly at the end of one, please do make a local backup of your documents. There is a new gobby in karmic, gobby-infinote, we will NOT be using this at UDS since we need for people on older releases to participate. Ensure you are using the “gobby” package. Finally, to take part I’d suggest a few things, have the channels joined before hand , a browser open with the timetable on it and remember each Room will have a different track topic in it at different times. If you have the icecast running, perhaps wear a set of headphones so you can hear better without distractions. If you’re in a channel and someone is talking and they are faint do write on the channel asking them to *SPEAK UP YOU CANNOT HEAR THEM* you won’t be the only one! If you make a comment on IRC and you want it to be conveyed to the people in the room, tell someone, perhaps make it *bold* so it stands out if it’s a busy discussion. But do poke again if it was missed and you want it conveyed. Use gobby, and take part, you are a part of the community also, you’re comments are needed to help shape Narwhal. Save the document afterwards locally if you like so you have a reference for it, this is just handy so you can reference the work throughout the cycle. [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu-UK IRC thoughts
Aloha, I'm in the Ubuntu-uk channel always and I love the channel and find for most of the time it to be a very enjoyable place to hang out, chat to people and get help. However, when it comes to your IRC meetings, it's like the cages are unleashed and politeness and manners that I see everyday in your channel vanish. Firstly, if someone is explaining a topic, please have the manners and decency to let them finish explaining what they are trying to tell you. I know it may be hard to tell when they finish, but it makes it harder to get to the point if you keep interjecting. Perhaps the person explaining can say FINISH at the end of their topic information. Secondly, if the topic has been finished and you feel you're not finished talking about it, but the chair has moved the topic on. PLEASE understand it's not helpful to continue the discussion, take it to the mailing list or bring it up on AOB. Finally, I think the -uk folks would benefit from a set chair. Mez did a great job and I'm sure Djones will also. But to give the chair experience and confidence in telling folks to quite frankly shut up and stop interrupting, I think it would be beneficial to have a permanent chair. Still rotate it, but perhaps on a 3 month rotation. Just my 2 cents. [ubuntu-uk] HCI 2007 conference call for papers
Hi, I hope you don't mind me emailing this to the list. I know a few people on here from the Expo in the Autumn and I figured that this is probably a good starting place to reach people in the Open Source and Ubuntu communities who are interested in usability and HCI (human-computer interaction). I'm a member of the British HCI community and, this year, I'm helping organise their annual conference, HCI 2007, which will be held at Lancaster University, UK in September. I'm responsible for the HCI Practice track, which is the particularly non-academic part of the conference, where we encourage submissions and participation from HCI practitioners (ie anyone who works in interface design/interaction design/usability/accessibility/technical writing/etc) who might not be up for writing a full academic-style paper but would be interested in writing a shorter submission about their experiences or burning issues. As a part of the Open Source community as well, I am very keen for there to be more crossover between the two groups. I know there is already some overlap but there must be so many people in the OS community who are interested in HCI, interface design, etc and could benefit from interacting with HCI people. And vice versa, I think HCI people could benefit from understanding OS issues and how they can benefit from and contribute to Open Source Software. So, I've pasted below the abbreviated call for papers. The full first call for papers is available at http://www.bcs-hci.org.uk/hci2007/downloads/HCI2007_CFP_first.pdf Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions that the cfp doesn't answer. Also, if you know of anyone who might be interested in this, please pass on the details below. Thanks, Laura - You are invited to participate… in HCI 2007: HCI, but not as we know it, at the InfoLab, University of Lancaster, UK, 3-7 September 2007. This is the 21st annual conference of the British Human Computer Interaction Group, a specialist group of the British Computing Society (BCS). For more details see www.hci2007.org · When a designer pieces together a set of environmental sensors and writes a program that coordinates them to monitor pollution automatically, where does the HCI happen? · When an airport security screener checks a passenger’s passport via a database while asking them standard bag-packing questions, where does the HCI happen? · When a student creates a homework blog for their classmates, where does the HCI happen? The answer seems to be that HCI no longer happens in standard one-to-one human-computer interactions, but across a range of different technologies, processes, groups and tasks that may not even have a recognisable interface. We invite you to submit full papers before the deadline of 31st March 2007. This year we have simplified and shortened the acceptance procedure. You will find out if you’ve been accepted by 18th May 2007, and final camera-ready copy will be due by 8th June 2007. You must remove from your submission all information that would allow the authors to be identified as the paper will be reviewed anonymously by an international panel of HCI experts. See the website for names of reviewers of previous conferences. Submissions should report original work which has not been previously published. The conference proceedings will contain all the full papers and will be published with full ISBN by The BCS and placed in the ACM Digital Library. Relevant topic areas include but are not limited to: · Ubiquitous interactivity · Disappearing, ambient or palpable computing? · Design and evaluation methods · Effecting affective HCI · Learning and training for HCI · Interfaces for pervasive systems · Interaction for the performing arts · e-Security and e-safety · Users with unusual requirements · Mobile media access and sharing · Interactive public displays · Fun and games - the next generation · Human-centred creativity Contributions that advance the theory or practice of any aspect of HCI are also welcomed. Papers must be prepared using Volume 1 of the conference publications format and must not exceed 10 pages including all diagrams. A 30-word summary must be attached. Online submission is required via the conference website by 18:00 GMT, Saturday 31st March 2007. Authors of accepted papers will be notified by the 18th May 2007 and will be required to submit a revised version of the paper for publication by the 8th June 2007, along with copyright release signed by all authors. At least one of the authors must register for the full conference no later than 8th June 2007, or the paper will not be included in the proceedings.
