I have to agree with this: on my desktop, 11.10 64-bit, 1Gb Nvidia card,
compiz takes 20-30% of CPU at all times. This is actually an improvement on
the initial release when it would regularily spin up to 60-70%.

Ubuntu 12.04 will ship with Compiz in April. That will be supported
for 5 years on the desktop. Compiz is a core component of Unity, in
fact Unity is implemented as a Compiz plugin.

Also note Canonical employs Sam Spilsbury who works on Compiz.

cheers everyone so far :D I have aactually already tried the normal
jockey, which was fine, I just tried envy as an alternative option - the
only difference was they recommended different releases of the driver.
But I think I might have partly discovered the issue, which is
completely different :S. When I set up my pc, I only set aside 15gb for
the main (not /home) partition. ...That's full. *embarrassed* hehe damn.
I discovered that after looking in the xorg.conf and running the
reconfigure command, which threw 'Device full' at me. I checked, and so
it was. So it would possibly appear that even if I did try to update, I
can't :/. Is it possible to safely resize the partitions?

Thanks xD

I don't doubt that envy is ideal for getting the most out of hardware,
but if you're starting from a situation where the desktop just plain
Does Not Work, it'd be better not to complicate things. Start from a
blank page (no xorg.conf) and work up. Once you've got the basics
working, and the restricted drivers, and compiz, then you can start
worrying about which driver gives good 4xAA performance or whatnot. I've
found envy to work great provided I install envy drivers on top of an
already working system. Conversely, I've found envy to complicate
matters unnecessarily when applied to a non-working system.

I was running compiz for a while but it seems running this breaks menus
in open office and a few other apps, so if after installing and getting
it working, you don't have any menu text or dialog box text in
Openoffice you have a clue to the cause,

Apart from that, compiz is really impresive, i can still enable with
system, preferences - appearance -
then visual effects tab,

Clicking none fixes the above problem until a patch or fix is released.
You can still impress friends with it though.

This sounds like a broken xorg.conf file. Try running without an
xorg.conf file. Hardy and Intrepid should manage without one, and/or
automatically generate a new one for you. Then use the restricted
drivers utility System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers (NOT

Eg:

[ubuntu-uk] compiz startup doesn't work

2008-12-15 Thread Farran
Hi all
minor problem, although it could potentially be a bit more serious cos I
couldn't fix it last time I managed to update...

Compiz won't start when I log in, or when I tick the effects box in
appearance prefs. I have to run "killall metacity && compiz --replace"
at least twice before it will work. Then it's fine. But it seems to
think I don't have the right driver installed or something, and i've
tried both drivers, using jockey and envy. Also, when I finally found
the new location of the (login) startup file, it's got compiz listed in
there, with all the id info and order right (with no trace of metacity).
Where is it/me going wrong?

Cheers

When you get certain kernel updates (ABI bumps) the modules need to
be recompiled. There is every attempt made to make sure these are
done in sync for the stable release, but sometimes you don't get
all of the packages installed at once. Could you check that you
have the correct modules package installed, via something like

  dpkg -l linux-restricted-modules-$(uname -r)

(this checks that the linux-restricted-modules package, which contains
the nvidia kernel bits, that matches your currently running kernel
is installed)

Thanks,

James

System --> Preferences --> Appearance

I do remember that Ubuntu will default to metacity, if something goes

[ubuntu-uk] Compiz Fusion stopped working

2008-07-29 Thread Dianne Reuby
I've just noticed that my compiz fusion special effects have stopped
working. The cube doesn't turn when I change desktops, or when I click
and drag; the windows aren't wobbly; if I hit CTRL the cursor is
highlighted but with solid rings rather than a graduated ring.

The settings still seem OK, I haven't made any system changes, the only
updates are the ones that have come through the normal updates, and I
don't remember seeing compiz (though I may have missed it as I don't
always remember to read all the updates included).

My video card is nVidia, I haven't changed the driver, and there are no
other video problems. PC memory seems to be OK.

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04, compiz 1.0.7.4 (which is the latest according to
Synaptic, although I think there's a later one on the compiz site). I've
looked at the troubleshooting on various sites, but can't find an
answer. I realise this is just eye-candy, but I do miss it!

Where can I start to track down the problem?

TIA
Dianne

 Correct answer.

The geometry of the "pivoting" (rotating) desktop virtualiser in Compiz
is related directly to the number of horizontal sides. In Ubuntu this
defaults to 2, which gives you a geometric plane with a front and back.

A cube has 4 workspaces (horizontal sides) plus a top cap and bottom cap.

An easy way of setting this whilst Compiz is running, is to right-click
the Workspace Switcher on your Gnome panel, select Preferences and
change the number of Columns (to 4, for a cube; total 6 sides when you
include the top cap and bottom cap).

There are other possibilities, such as an extruded triangle (3
workspaces), extruded pentangle (5 workspaces), extruded hexagon (6
workspaces) and so forth. I got up to at least 12 workspaces (extruded
dodecagon) before I got bored, and both the Intel i965 and Nvidia
GeForce2 graphics cards coped fine with that. If there is an upper
limit, it must be a pretty silly one.

For ease of use, I typically set my number of virtual desktops to the
same as the number of workspaces of my "cube". In that way, if I ever
switch Compiz Fusion off (or it crashes - which rarely happens these
days), I still have the same number of desktops.

I am entirely uncertain what effect the Rows preference has in the
Compiz Workspace Switcher. I can't see that it does anything at all, or
at least not with the Compiz "Cube".

Ahh right, I did wonder if it was Compiz Fusion that did all the fancy
effects. Best I managed was wobbly windows. I'll have to have another
play as when I had it on Feisty it always made a great impression when
converting eye-candy loving Windows users.

Can get the screen to pivot centrally, screen to wobble etc, but no

Have been on to web site and got the green OK's that machine is OK and

It must be a simple answer but I'm dammed if I can see it

Any constructive ideas please?

I tried installing xserver-xgl, but no window decorations showed up
either, and it was painfully slow when repainting. Perhaps it was
because my gfx card was being worked all the time?

Some people say xgl is required (for ATI cards at least), most people
suggest the same argb-glx-visuals trick, some have suggested disabling
and re-enabling the window-decorator plugin, some have suggested forcing
the window-decorator plugin ¨command¨ option.

I´ve tried all the above to no avail.

Hmm. At least it looks like a compiz - nvidia problem now, nothing much
to do with gnome, as the same problem creeps up with beryl/kde, and
afaik, xgl.

I installed nvidia-glx from the Ubuntu repos and am using the nVidia
autoconfiguration xorg.conf file.

Any further tips?

Xuan You.

Hi,

One thing that may get you more information is to start with metacity,
i.e. no effects, and then open a terminal and run

  compiz --replace & disown

(the "& disown" bit is a good idea, as having an X terminal control
the window manager can lead to some bad things)

Then post the resulting output here, and search Google using the
suspicious messages. It seems like compiz has been tested on nearly
every chipset/driver/Xserver/kernel version, so normally the error
messages are known to Google.

The alternative is that this information is ~/.xsession-errors, but this
way you get all the bits that correspond to compiz.

Thanks,

James

Hi,

I've tried adding that line alone to no avail,

sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals also doesn't work,

adding the following lines..
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
Option "RenderAccel" "True"
Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "True"
Option "backingstore" "True"
Option "TripleBuffer" "Tru

via
http://nlindblad.org/2007/01/28/no-window-borders-with-beryl-and-nvidia-aiglx/

also didn't work.

Each time, I tested by enabling compiz via the System menu, then
restarting X by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. All the times I tested the
window decorations didn't show up.

Thanks for the tip though.

Hi,

I don't know if it will work for you, but when I was seeing this with
Nvidia I did some searching and found that adding

  Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"

to the "Device" section of my xorg.conf helped.

Thanks,

[ubuntu-uk] Compiz and gtk-window-decorator

2008-04-14 Thread Tan Xuan You
Hi all,

I think this has been a prevalent problem recently, yet I find myself
stumped by it.

Basically, whenever I enable any level of compiz using System ->
Preferences -> Appearance -> Visual Effects, gtk-window decorator fails
to paint my window decorations. Titlebar, window border are all gone,
and gnome-terminal is a big white screen, no matter how I try to force
the settings.

I'm on a nVidia card, and the drivers seem to work fine (XPlane works).

I've tried the command line too..
"gtk-window-decorator --replace" gives
Gtk-WARNING: Cannot open display:

Installing emerald and running "emerald --replace" also gives the same
output, both in su and out of.

I've tried poking around with the settings in CCSM, but to no avail.

I'm on a clean upgrade of Gutsy Gibbon (7.10).

Any tips?

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Compiz ?

2007-12-21 Thread Farran
perhaps if hda1 is entirely stable, you could generate the installed
files list and import it to Synaptic on hda3? Then you would have
everything from hda1 with everything you had extra on hda3. Compiz
should work then, as long as you don't have something installed that's
stopping it working.
Think that made sense...
hope that helps?

I think we need some more info, such as the exact error message
(cut'n'paste?), and the contents of the X log (from /var/log/Xorg.log,
or a similar filename in that directory).

The X log might be a bit too large to post inline or attach to a mail,
so maybe using the pastebin (http://pastebin.ubuntu-uk.org/) would be
a good idea.

Thanks for the reply
Both partitions have been upgraded from previous distro and I installed
the nvidia driver using the
Ubuntu restricted drivers install But the xorg.conf and the
/usr/bin/compiz are the same as are
the compiz files from Synaptic and at one time both systems were ok but
now hda1 is still ok but hda3 gives me the error message

Do you live anywhere around Essex? If so I'll take you up on the offer ;)

If I ever meet you I'll buy you a drink... it was as simple as that... just

Now I've just got to work out why my keyboard has reverted to US... is there

What card is it and what driver do you have installed (ie do you use the
restricted driver?) ATI cards don't work nicely (if at all) with Compiz,
though much depends on the age of your card and the driver you're using.

If it's an older card and it doesn't work with the free driver then it
probably won't work at all. If it's a new card then you might want to
try using the latest driver direct from ATI (ie not the restricted
driver from Ubuntu) which should work now (as of about two days ago). If
it's a middling card (like mine) then you can either a) stick with the
free driver or b) try getting Compiz to work with a proprietary driver
and XGL - something that I've never managed :(

Hey Sean

Have you tried installing xserver-xgl?

Launch Synaptic Package Manager (System ->> Administration) and
install xserver-xgl. Now restart Xorg (ctrl+shift+backspace) and try
to enable desktop effects through appearance. This has worked for both
my grandmother and my father.

Did you install it through apt? (sudo aptitude install nvidia-glx-new)
Also, why run it form the commandline? Just go to
System>Prefs>AAppearence then the visual effects tab and select normal
or extra.
If you do: sudo aptitude install compizconfig-settings-manager, you'll
get a "custom" option too

How did you install Compiz? AFAIK (I use Kubuntu) Compiz by default on
Ubuntu doesn't use Emerald or XGL so I'm guessing you set it up
manually? If so then try looking on the Compiz forums
http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/ There's a lot of threads on there that
deal with running Compiz with Emerald and the nvidia driver using XGL on
Ubuntu.
