Ah the good old VIC20! The first computer I ever got my hands on at school and the reason why I ended up doing a career in computing :-) It got me lots of street cred at school as I was the only one who was interested enough to learn how to load and run the games on it (Blitz in particular: can't beat a game that just requires you to press the space bar at the right moment in order to play it, none of that first person shooter malarkey). Re: [ubuntu-uk] Looking for a Speccy
Not sure if the Spectrum in question was necessarily a Spectrum+ -- Sinclair sold kits to upgrade the keyboard: I recall that it was simply a case of unscrewing the motherboard, re-seating it to the new case and soldering the wires from the "reset switch" to each end of a resister. Computers are so much more fun and useful when you can make them do what *you* want, instead of what the people who wrote the software *think* you want! That's what has been lost by modern computers, but that's partly because they are used by everyone and not just enthusiasts who want to learn how to make proper use of them. Of course there was in some ways a lot more in the way of proprietary hardware and software around, but (probably partly because they were so new and the hardware simpler) it was much easier to just write a program to do what you wanted yourself. Then there's all the sharing of code, hardware projects, etc. through magazine listings and computer clubs. Darn, now I want to get everything out my retro cupboard and start playing! I really must visit the museum some time, although I'd likely want to bring everything home :) Probably as well I don't live closer!! -- Paul Tansom | Aptanet Ltd. | http://www.aptanet.com/ | 023 9238 0001 == Registered in England | Company No: 4905028 | Registered Office: Crawford House, Hambledon Road, Denmead, Waterlooville, Hants, PO7 6NU -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/
