Check that the firmware is up-to-date. It should be on v1.7.4:

https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=ykctt=wt64a=latitude-15-5500-laptop

This was updated just last month so it is clear there were issues.

[ubuntu-uk] ubuntu 20.04 freezing at startup

2020-06-01 Thread Ben Davies

Hi,

I have installed Ubuntu 20.04 on a Dell Latitude 5500. I changed the
BIOS settings to turn off RAID support as this was a prequisite for
installing Ubuntu. I also shrank the Windows 10 partition, in Windows
10, and installed Ubuntu to the larger parition using a usb thumb drive.

I've been using it without problems for about 4 weeks. However, in the
last 2 weeks it has started to stall at the boot screen where Ubuntu is
highlited and there is the option to select Windows boot manager and a
few other options. Up until today it has stalled every other day, but
the boots normally after a hard restart. However, today it stalled after
three restarts in row, then booted normally on the fourth attempt.

I reset the BIOS after the second time it stalled, but it stallled a
third time the booted normally.

I wonder if someone would be able to offer me some support in resolving
this?

Best Wishes,

Ben

Hey all,

I posted a blog post on insights this morning:-

https://insights.ubuntu.com/2017/08/08/ubuntu-artful-desktop-fit-and-finish-sprint/

We're looking for people to join us in the London Canonical office on
August 24th after work between 4pm and 9pm to help get Ubuntu Artful
ready for release in October. The focus for this sprint is to look at
the fit and finish of the desktop. We're expecting more eyeballs to
help identify & fix glitches or inconsistencies now we're moving from
Unity to GNOME Shell by default.

Please take a look at the post, and if you can help, do fill in the
linked form. We'll provide pizza/beer/beverages during the evening.

I've not seen any of the pre-installed linux systems being offered at a
"significant premium" -- usually they are roughly the same price as a
Windows system or slightly (but not much less). Can you cite an example of
such a system?

Old systems (particularly desktops) usually work well with free UNIX-like
systems because people have had time to write device drivers for the
hardware. Frequently brand new systems (particularly laptops) don't work
well due to lack of these drivers.

Even when laptops are relatively well supported its frequent that there are
issues with suspend and resume, wireless device stability and battery life
etc. Many of us who are Linux experts and have to deal with it all day at
work would quite like to buy an off the shelf system with decent Linux
support for home use and support the few companies offering these systems.
There are too few such systems available.

Freedom?

To quote Dr Ben Goldacre, who used this as a book title...
I think you'll find it's a little more complicated than that.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Think-Youll-Find-More-Complicated/dp/0007462484/?tag=bs0b-21

For instance, generic PCs can come with firmware or hardware that is
only Windows-compatible, not Linux-compatible.

For example:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/10/28/lenovo_downward_dogs_with_yoga_bios_update_supporting_linux_installs/

So it might be worth paying a premium for something that you know *will* work.

For instance:

https://puri.sm/

> the newbie
> will probably start with a PC he/she already owns,

Perhaps because they can't buy Linux hardware. They have no choice.

And those are people we need to convert, not ignore.

Depends on the marketing, I think.

True. And effectively, often, it is. I live in Central Europe now, and
even today, OS and app piracy remains rife.

That sounds like bigotry and lack of experience speaking, to be frank.

Immunity from malware, spyware etc.? Guaranteed openness, freedom,
security? Performance? There are many possible reasons, if sold
correctly.

Whilst I fully understand why a PC, pre-installed with a Linux distro, is no
cheaper than one with Windows I do question what is gained by paying a
significant premium. A Linux enthusiast will presumably be both prepared and
able to install a distro on any piece of kit that can run it, the newbie will
probably start with a PC he/she already owns, and the non-techie is unlikely to
be interested to the extent of paying over the odds.

I've never been able to persuade any non-Linux user to install Ubuntu or any
other distro on a brand new machine. However, I've have a fair bit of success
with people owning older PCs, those infested with malware and people who are
simply sick of Windows. I believe they will all stay with Linux when they
replace their kit, but will probably ask me to do the installation rather than
pay extra for a pre-configured PC.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu Phone web browser broken

I am still having a problem with my Ubuntu Phone, lots of it not working
now. No web browser, no text messaging, no Network Indicator and thus no
phone connection, no wifi connection and sometimes keyboard not working
when trying to type.

If I reset the phone, and lose all my data, would everything work again?

And how would I back up my data. This page has some info, but not sure
how to implement it:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/602850/how-do-i-backup-my-ubuntu-phone

Backing up /home/phablet will backup everything except the apps
which are in a number of places including /opt/click.ubuntu.com/ and
   /usr/share/click/preinstalled.

How would I go about backing up these places? If I connect the phone to

Re: [ubuntu-uk] ubuntu 16.04 fsck and display issue (SOLVED)

2016-08-12 Thread David Goldsbrough
Finally fixed the problem - not 100% but I'm now happy!

First of all including nomodeset in my grub config file had no effect
whatsoever - perhaps this is just one of the examples that defies the usual
fix. Remember my machine is a desktop with proprietary drivers(installed
during the upgrade) for a NVIDEA card

So I fixed it like this - taking all
http://askubuntu.com/questions/362722/how-to-fix-plymouth-splash-screen-in-all-ubuntu-releases/
the usual precautions to ensure I had a reversion path back should things
go wrong. I will not pretend that I knew everything I was doing, but took
things on trust as I say ensuring I could revert back.

I used these 2 links as my inspiration:-

http://askubuntu.com/questions/362722/how-to-fix-plymouth-splash-screen-in-all-ubuntu-releases/

http://askubuntu.com/questions/6033/enabling-nvidia-driver-messes-up-splash-screen

>From within a terminal screen:-

1. sudo apt-get install v86d
2. sudo vi /etc/default/grub (I am a vi man but other editors could be
used)
3. Added the following 2 lines in the appropriate place in the file -
commenting out any conflicting lines and of course saving the file
  GRUB_GFXMODE=800x600x32
  GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep
4. At the terminal prompt I then typed the following

 echo FRAMEBUFFER=y | sudo tee /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash
sudo update-initramfs -u
sudo update-grub
5. Exit the terminal screen, Shutdown and Reboot

Comment:-
There are ways of finding out the screen resolution capabilities of the
NVIDEA graphics card and I wanted 800x600x32 because of my low vision.
Read the second link above - but do not use hwinfo or install it - find out
the video capabilities inside a grub command session.

Added Bonus:-
This fix also fixed the fsck echo also - so that is no longer displayed
even though I suspect it still runs.

Remaining problems:-
Ubuntu logo is displayed on startup but after it disappears the flashing
dots remain for a while. No Ubuntu logo appears on shutdown. All well
known problems, but a fix for these will go on the backburner.

Thanks for your interest.

As far as I know, the order of quiet and splash make no odds.

You could add ``nomodeswitch'' right after them to try it out.

If you edit /etc/grub/default then you must run

sudo update-grub

.. afterwards for it to take effect.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] ubuntu 16.04 fsck and display issue

2016-08-11 Thread David Goldsbrough
Many thanks for the links provided regarding how to temp change the grub
config file at boot and indeed permanently. Still the same though, no
splash screen on boot, although I have not attempted to change the
/etc/default/grub file. However, I did notice in there it said splash
quiet as opposed to quiet splash - which I did edit in the bootup along
with adding nomodeset - all to no effect.

I have researched further and last night even started the plymouth daemon
manually and managed to display the splash screen, so if it works manually
it should work auto also.

I am currently working on this
http://askubuntu.com/questions/362722/how-to-fix-plymouth-splash-screen-in-all-ubuntu-releases/

but before continuing I would welcome specifically some comment on the lines

echo FRAMEBUFFER=y | sudo tee /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash
sudo update-initramfs -u

I guess the first line creates that splash file as I don't have one
currently. The second line I guess invokes an up date which without
would render the first line a waste of time. The third line is there to
update grub as a result of previous changes mentioned in the link to
/etc/default/grub.

I thought it might be best if I appended my grub file so here is without
all the usual commented lines.

GRUB_DEFAULT=0

GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="splash quiet"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=None

As always help and comments most welcome.

Sorry to hear that you're having problems.

Here is how to both temporarily try, and permanently add, kernel boot
parameters:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBootParameters

Here are some instructions specific to adding "nomodeset":

http://askubuntu.com/questions/38780/how-do-i-set-nomodeset-after-ive-already-installed-ubuntu

Plymouth is the program that displays the graphical loading screen. It
is run by the kernel early in the boot up process. It runs from the
initrd, so before the hard disk has even been mounted.

https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/Plymouth/

Plymouth uses a kernel feature called KMS: kernel mode setting. This
allows the kernel to set the screen into graphics mode long before
X.org runs and the GUI starts.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/kernel_mode_setting

This can cause problems on some machines. Some of my machines display
the Plymouth graphics very early and the dots underneath the logo
animate for some time. Some display it very late and only for a short
time -- a second or so. Some do not display it at all, or only at
shutdown, often with colours distorted or the wrong palette.

But Plymouth is just decorative. You can remove it if you prefer. To
do so, replace the "splash" parameter in the GRUB entry with
"nosplash". If you want to see the kernel boot messages as they go
past, remove the "quiet" parameter.

Undaunted I researched further.
I thought this thread looked promising

https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2321997

and I checked a few things out but I suspect it was written before 16.04.1
and .1 has corrected the bugs in part. I noticed late it was for lubuntu
but guessed ubuntu was the same.

I am reading this at the moment
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Plymouth
but again notice it predates 16.04

I have not ruled out it is something to do with my graphics card nvidea but
the upgrade appears to have installed the latest driver.

If I understand things correctly the boot sequence goes something like
this:-
GRUB opens the kernal using certain parameters. The kernal(s) have been
pre-compiled during kernal updates and compilation includes ref to display
drivers so the screen post GRUB works. If this limited understanding is
true, I am unclear when "plymouth" is called - prior to kernal opening I
guess. If this is true, then "plymouth" can only display splash screen in
some form of monitor default mode. But I am guessing.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to try and fix please. I'm not
sure if it is still a formally recorded bug which I just need to await a
fix for.

Thanks

I have successfully resurrected this in the past by adding the kernel boot
parameter

nomodeset

You can try this at boot time by pressing E on the GRUB menu, and adding it
to the end of the boot line.

If it works, you can add it to /etc/GRUB/defaults.

Maybe connected, I don't know, but on boot I see the remains I guess of an

I get that too. I've decided to leave it. I find it reassuring.

If you're curious, you can add a file called ``forcefsk'' to the root
directory of your root filesystem and force a filesystem check. Then you'll
see the results. The file should be automatically removed after the check
is run.

The easiest way to do this is with the command:

sudo touch /forcefsck

[ubuntu-uk] ubuntu 16.04 fsck and display issue

2016-08-09 Thread David Goldsbrough
So, I bit the bullet and upgraded from 14.04 to 16.04 on an old desktop as
a pre cursor to upgrading my Lenovo T60 laptop - my sturdy workhorse for
now. One day I will get round to buying a 64bit machine.

Any way, all went smoothly - no real problems. I was glad that the upgrade
retained all my settings especially my extra large mouse cursor as I have
Low Vision - in fact the upgrade improved matters making my large cursor
visible outside of FireFox where it only seemed to work under 14.04.

To the point, when I boot now I no longer see the "Ubuntu" message in the
centre of the screen with the changing coloured dots underneath. No big
issue, but it was one of those reassuring things when booting up. I can
live without it, but should it be doing this? Do I need to tweak something
to re-instate it?

Maybe connected, I don't know, but on boot I see the remains I guess of an
fsck output flash up a few times. It says something like
 /dev/sda5: clean, x/xxx files, xx/
and then it proceeds to boot. Doesn't take long - hence the reason why
cannot see the exact numbers and jot down quickly enough. Again, I guess
its no big issue - the time to worry maybe would be if the output was
different. Again, do I need to do something to prevent this? (/dev/sda5
is the boot partition for ubuntu - Vista is on 2 other partitions and I
think sda3 and sda4 are allocated to two DVD drives in the machine)

Many thanks for reading and any responses you make.

You type it and hit enter. That is after logging in as I explained previously.
Now you can see the benefit of inserting replies. If you had done

Hit Ctrl+Alt+F1 which
should take you to a terminal. Login there and run
sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade
if there are any errors come back to us. Then reboot using
sudo reboot
and see if that helps

You need to pass the filename as one of the command line arguments. For
example, if your file is called myfile.zip, you should run:

unzip -v myfile.zip

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the suggestion. This is the message after I ran the unzip command:
unzip:  cannot find or open v, v.zip or v.ZIP.

There are lots of things which could cause that message. Running unzip
on the command line might give you a more helpful message:

unzip -v [filename]

You might need to install it first (apt-get install unzip).

Have to admit, that does sound exceptionally good!

I vaguely covet one of these:

Quad i7 4G memory. You might find a local supplier who accept a check
for something like this. Excellent Linix machines are thinkpads...

They use a free Ubuntu derivative (trisquel) so no problem with drivers. (nor

Do ask, they are a small UK based company and are quick to respond. good luck!

Thanks for that. I'll look into it.

using a prepaid debit card instead? I'd say most if not all online
stores will not accept cheques as payment these days due to the long
turnaround time and stronger possibility of payment failure
(debit/credit cards give a virtually immediate payment verification
response to the supplier).

The situation with paying by cheque is out of my control.

I think Jim will struggle to find a shop anywhere, online or offline,
that accepts cheques. They've been pretty much killed off for consumer
to business transactions. A local small PC shop might be willing to
accept cheques, but that's the only place I can think of.

A pre-paid card is one option, though I believe they charge for loading
cash onto them. Another option would be to get a trusted person to buy
the laptop on their card, then reimburse them by cheque, though that
could cause issues later down the line if the laptop has a fault.

I don't mean to derail the conversation, but if you are paying by
cheque, is this because you do not have a debit card for your bank
account from which you are drawing the cheque? Have you considered
using a prepaid debit card instead? I'd say most if not all online
stores will not accept cheques as payment these days due to the long
turnaround time and stronger possibility of payment failure
(debit/credit cards give a virtually immediate payment verification
response to the supplier).

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu Laptop

2016-04-07 Thread Nigel Verity
I totally agree that looking for a laptop with Ubuntu pre-installed is probably
not the best approach.

If it were a straight choice between buying model X with Windows or Ubuntu for
the same price, then that would be very satisfying from an idealogical
perspective. Back in the real world, however, you have to pragmatic -
especially if you are on a modest budget.

Best just buy the laptop which meets your requirements in terms of spec and
price then overwrite Windows with Ubuntu as soon as you take it out of the box.
Unless it is a very new model you will have no problem finding advice on the
internet as to how well it runs Ubuntu before committing yourself. I've yet to
find a desktop or laptop from a mainstream manufacturer which wouldn't run
Ubuntu or, failing that, Mint with little or no configuration using a clean
install - though I've had one or two issues trying to set up dual boot.

In the vein of buying a laptop without an OS, The 'going linux' podcast
from last week featured someone talking about how he had bought a t420 and
got the specs up to the point that it beats out a new macbook pro.

http://ia801501.us.archive.org/25/items/glp295/glp295.mp3

It seems you can do it for about $500:
http://www.pcliquidations.com/p24202-lenovo-thinkpad-t420-4236?utm_source=google_medium=cse_term=24202=Cj0KEQjwipi4BRD7t6zGl6m75IgBEiQAn7CfF1x3S52kwTA04y3NxyHEcO1sN8yU4JG8TzmO89J_aawaAmhq8P8HAQ

Add a solid state drive, extra HDD in the media slot and some RAM and you
should be close to $500. You could keep the price a little lower if you
forewent on some of those specs.

Warning: in the podcast he favours Kali and Elementary, and complains that
Unity is a bit too slow.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I tried "sftp user@hostname" as advised and that did indeed work fine. This set
me off on a search for known problems with Filezilla. It seems a lot of Fedora
users were having similar problems with Filezilla 3.7.3, which turned out to be
the version I was running. For some reason it was disallowing SFTP connections
using SSH keys.

I've installed a later version (3.10.2) from a PPA and everything is now
working fine.

I took a further look this morning. It is impossible (almost) to get
Android apps without going via Google Play. In order to use Google
Play, you have to give a Google login, and that means a Google account
with all the information grabbing they do. The outside sources (Amazon
is one), have a very limited range of apps, most of which are not for
serious work.

I've looked at both Tizen, and Sailfish
Maybe that's a good reason for Ubuntu's lack of enthusiasm for an
Android layer.

This, though, is a potentially possible route. Same as you can install
the `ubuntu-restricted-extras` package and get Java, Flash, MS Core
Fonts, etc. If you could install a hacked Sailfish Java runtime and
get apps that way, then it'd be cool and helpful -- while keeping the
noobs away.

But Sailfish, AIUI, is derived from Moblin and Maemo. It has an X
server and all that. It's very different from Ubuntu Mobile.

OTOH, if Ubuntu, Jolla and Blackberry formed a consortium to develop
and support an unofficial, 3rd party, FOSS Android Java Runtime for
their 3 mobile OSes, it would be to the advantage of all of them.

So might unicorns that poop icecream that was then delivered by flying
pigs, though.

Android consists of 2 parts:

* The OS -- Linux kernel, userland, Java runtime, GUI etc. FOSS, no licence fee.

* Google Mobile Services -- the value-added Google apps including the
Google Play services. Proprietary, freeware, licensed.

Android is entirely usable and moderately useful without GMS, but you
can't install apps from the Play store.

The Blackberry 10 OS includes an emulator for Android apps, including
an installer and the Amazon App Store. Few useful apps are in there --
lots of crappy little freebies, dumb games, and trial versions of paid
wrappers around websites. But, they all seem to work.

GMS adds, or enables, the useful stuff: Gmail, gMaps, gCalendar,
gContacts etc. But they don't all work on BB10 and they wouldn't all
work on Ubuntu either.

You can't licence GMS on its own. Without GMS, Android compatibility
isn't much use. This is a deliberate move by Google to protect its OS
and I can't entirely blame them.

I am told by a friend who has both BB10 and Jolla Sailfish phones that
Sailfish has much better GMS compatibility. But then, Sailfish is
Linux and BB10 isn't.

BB10's based Android compatibility is great. But GMS is a naughty
hack, only some apps work and most moan about missing Google Play
services -- some then crash or abort, some display an error but work
if you ignore it, some display an error and you must press OK at which
point they crash.

But it's a suboptimal experience.

I see no way around this unless Google and Blackberry did a deal,
which seems vanishingly unlikely. But then, BB is now an Android
licensee with the Priv, so maybe...

Similarly, I don't see Ubuntu signing up. It would be strongly
disadvantageous to them as a company to do so: if Ubuntu Mobile ran
Android apps officially, then there'd never be many native apps & the
whole point of the OS would go out the metaphorical window.

The USP of Ubuntu Mobile is that it's a full Linux OS and can run full
desktop apps. Android apps don't do that. Android on the desktop is
not a good experience.

Android compatibility would thus be a Very Bad Thing for Ubuntu Mobile.

Indeed. On Sailfish I know some people will optionally install the
necessary Google components to enable them to fill the gaps in the app
ecosystem.

We've discussed this repeatedly at length over the years of Ubuntu
Phone's development. It's very much a double edged sword. If you add
Android (or indeed any other OS) compatibility you're actively making
it less likely people will develop specifically for your platform.
You're also tied to the Google release cycle, and as Google don't
release the software for Android until late in the development cycle,
you're always playing catch-up.

I don't think that means we'd never have Android compatibility though.
If some 3rd party made an app framework which developers could use to
bring single, specific Android applications to Ubuntu phone, and
shipped that library in the store, then it may well be viable. But
baking that into the platform might not be prudent. Hard to tell.

Cheers,
Al.

I talked to some of the Tizen developer guys - The told me their OS is
so locked in, you wouldn't recognise it as a Linux distro. You can't
access root at all, and a lot of the more powerful commandline items
have been removed! One guy's comment was 'If you are any kind of

hacker and the developer. But - you'll like this - several guys at
Tizen said that the Ubuntu is the best of the lot! They feel that if it
could support Android, it would have an enormous market! And the code
Sailfish use for the Android platform is mostly FOSS and downloadable
straight from the Sailfish site.

[ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu phone problems

2015-12-02 Thread David King
Since the latest system update a few days ago, has anyone else
experienced some problems?

Cannot connect to my Ubuntu PC on USB any more, PC does not recognise
phone being there, although it did previously.
Cannot read some emails in Dekko, they just appear blank, but were okay
before.
When clicking a link to a website from a webapp and the kind of web
browser lite window appears, it keeps reloading itself (problem since
last two updates).
Some apps seem less stable in general and more likely to crash,
including web browser and Podbird.

massive companies - Intel & Samsung which have many hundreds of
developers available to work on the platform. We are punching above

Agreed, I was not suggesting otherwise. Though certainly a
significant majority of the dozen or so Android users I know require
at least a couple of the google apps. They are not necessarily
typical users however.

For myself I wish I could justify having a second phone in order to

Huawei is my new phone. I meant Samsung Galaxy Young2. The history
shows that Samsung worked well on early models, but everything remotely
recent; the Galaxy Note for example, worked, but broke after a while.
There is currently no work on Galaxy in progress.

I still just might have a go - but maybe not. OTOH, there is active
work on an Android interface, but it's slowed to a crawl. Maybe an

Android apps are essentially Java apps -- Android compatibility means 2 things:
[1] a sort of special JVM
[2] Google Play services, because sadly many apps require these.

I believe there is also an Android runtime for Windows Phone, but MS
is considering killing it or already has.

Oh, I know it's quite feasible. And quite a lot of the system is open

wouldn't be much of a problem. If any of the phone team are listening,

The physical keyboard is retrovation. My first smartphone was running
Windows Mobile 5. I updated an app to run on that phone, and had to
write a Windows XP app to allow modules (texts) to be added. It was
that process that finally made me bin Windows altogether. It was just
so flakey under the surface, and the 'Frameworks' were ridiculous to

You could look in /var/log/dpkg.log for entries around the time the
issue occured.

You could run "sudo dpkg --configure -a" to make sure any
un-configured or half-configured packages are configured.

That might be enough. I could speculate what the issue is, but if you
find something in dpkg.log, feel free to post a snippet and we can

I use the "about Computer" facility to update on a regular basis or when

I always like to display what is going on if only to half understand what

Today during the big kernal, etc updates I noticed some warning message
with a suggestion on a command line that could be wrong but it was far too
fast for me to know exactly what it said especially with my failing
eyesight.
I tried looking around the logs in /var/log but found nothing that
resembled what I recall glimpsing.
What exactly is the best way for me to find out what I have missed - I know
its just a warning rather than an error but the curiosity is bugging me.

supplied but if you replaced the supplied system with a standard
Ubuntu one there is no guarantee. I don't see that is unreasonable.
One cannot expect them to guarantee that the machine will work with
all future versions of Ubuntu any more than if you buy a Windows
machine it is guaranteed to work with all future versions of Windows.

You are still better off than buying one without Ubuntu pre-installed,
as that is not guaranteed to work at all with Ubuntu.

However I think I would want one with 14.04 not 12.04.

Interesting, thanks. My take on it is that even a 12.04.4 live session
may not work, nor in fact any live session 'may not work at all'
that sounds like graphics etc. Certainly there does not seem to be a
background of happy close cooperation between HP and [Ubuntru]. I have
posted a question on EBuyer site about the caviat. Unfortunately such
a public question is already an adverse sign. But, I am very glad to
have found out about this before spending money. On a machine with no
pre install, I would first confirm from other users that things were
sensible before buying, Ubuntu does usually 'work'.

Look at the mess we will probably see when people buy this (G2
version???) and ask the community for help with live sessions or going
to a new release. It is likely to give Ubuntu a bad name. How is it
that HP, a Ubuntu-friendly company has managed to release such
machines in a situation where the formal Ubuntu comment includes 'may
not work at all'? Have we got any inside information or community
knowledge, that may suggest this situation will get responsibly
supported without undue damage to Ubuntu reputation? Anyone please?

I am also concerned that there is no mention of a support comment on
the sales site - with specific software one would hope that HP at
least would have a support comment.

Thank you, yes perhaps.
Although I noted, a while ago that both Dell and HP were selling
Ubuntu pre installed machines on the high street in - India
So hopefully the hardware issues would then and now, be fairly well
known and not come as a bad surprise to the central tech teams.
Anyway, thankful for whatever.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu phone performance one month on

The phone is improving with every update so all is good.

loading logo showing - I have it with much lower frequency - I barely
even notice now...

I may be lucky. If I were you I would try factory reset, but then I
don't have much data on this phone - just in case of something like you
described happened.
(Also I am not sure if factory reset can fix anything :/)

I'm doing this through the mailing list as it's not a specific bug
report but rather just a general bad mood my phone has developed!

I have updates set to manual so I know what is being updated and when,
the last system update was weeks ago. However over the last week or so
it seems to be pot luck as to whether I can make or receive calls. The
vibrate stutters during the call if it is going to fall flat, then
either it reboots or the microphone stops working. Apps have startyed
crashing (camera) or they show the loading logo and just hang
(contacts, phone, system settings)

It has been like this only recently fr no real reason so I'm counting
down the days to the next major update. Is it just me or are others
experiencing this.
