I feel it was a perfectly reasonable request and have to admit that it shocks me that we ended up discussing Nazis and WW2 - that said, I am absolutely sure that Hitler would not have dreamt of top posting, Eva would have berated him, I am sure, for writing "you're in charge of the wine, Rudolf" on Hess's invitation to a meal in the Bavarian Alps... he would, of course, have had to write it on the bottom where it would be logical to do so. As for Winston Churchill, he'd have probably been too drunk to write it anywhere logical... would probably have missed the paper and written it on the tablecloth instead, then wondering why Lady Astor was chuckling to herself at the other side of the Commons Canteen. It is not a pointless battle to stand up and say I believe in something. This list would not work without a common language together with some form of structure, whether written or not, and people who believe in what they are doing. By standing up for the things you believe in helps set and reassert the standard. By giving in, you are agreeing with the drop in standards. The excuse for top posting is surely nothing but ignorance and, as such, can quite simply be resolved by highlighting the fact. Lack of comment equals lack of influence - the consequence of which is chaos! Quote from the FAQ: Godwin's Law FAQ -or- "How to post about Nazis and get away with it" One of the most famous pieces of Usenet trivia out there is "if you mention Hitler or Nazis in a post, you've automatically ended whatever discussion you were taking part in". Known as Godwin's Law, this rule of Usenet has a long and sordid history on the network - and is absolutely wrong. This FAQ is an attempt to set straight as much of the history and meaning of Godwin's Law as possible, and hopefully encourage users to invoke it a bit more sparingly. Of course, knowing Usenet, it won't do an ounce of good... Quote end. Full context is here: http://www.faqs.org/faqs/usenet/legends/godwin/ > I'm not shooting at anyone. Merely pointing out that bringing up > something as atrocious as the second world war when talking about > top-posting really isn't appropriate in my opinion. My comparison applies to terms "ginving up / ignorance" _not_ to top-posting. What I want point out is, that it is very dangerous to give up only because those who does something wrong are a majority. The majority _and_ the individual are _always_ wrong. Right is _only_ the compromise. That's a rule that I learnt. Have fun, W.
