Kind of, yes. But of course we can't compete with all the other video
sites out there, so we need a unique selling point (or two). At least
part of that would be a compliance with the CoC for content. Having a
built in Ubuntu upload tool would also help.

I agree.

Support != management. The FAQ clearly says no linux version. We can of
course hope that they make a Linux version, but Techsmiths track record
isn't great on that.

Al.

It's got to be v quick and simple to use - If you get a GUI support
question one to start, run through sequence, one click click to add to
mail, IM, ftp.
And it's got to be pretty.

They haven't totally ruled out a linux version but from their support team

"Hiya Eddie,

Agreed that there should be one.

We started with Windows and Mac because we have limited resources and those
seemed the best place for us to begin.

Currently we have no plans to create Linux versionbut hopefully some day
soon we'd get the 'ok' :)

Keep an eye on http://blog.jingproject.com for more info."

Well maybe somebody will do it.

Well we have most of the major components to make that work. We have
decent screencast tools such as recordmydesktop. We can easily do video
conversion (ffmpeg/mencoder etc) and hosting is the other bit we have.
It's really just a case of tying all those together.

Indeed. There doesn't seem to be much to it other than gluing together all the
bits to be honest.

You 've piqued my curiosity - is there any more info at this stage??

And also in addition as well too - back to Jing - I really think an
OSS Jing would be a boon to Ubuntu.
It's not a web site or just a screencast creator, it seems to be a way
of making lightweight screencast type quick replies to a user's question
and emailing it to them or putting it on a server where they can dl it -
not necessarily for public access in case business users want to offer
support this way. A link to their video.,

Works for you, but wont work for the other 95% of desktops running
Windows or OSX.

Flash is useful because it is installed on so many computers, Java is
close behind in terms of usefulness, but less installed machines, Ogg
codecs is waaay down on those two.

I'd rather it "just worked" and people didn't have to install extra
stuff. I appreciate that flash is an install, but it's an install that
_many_ people have.

Also the site I am working on isn't specifically for screencasts.

Cheers,
Al.

Yes. Although at the moment it has a moderator system which means videos
aren't live until a moderator checks and accepts them. Suggestions for
alternative methods welcome.

The site I am working on does the video conversion for you. You just
upload an ogg/avi/whatever and it gets converted (at the moment) to
a .flv video which plays in a browser flash based plugin (yes yes, I
know flash is evil). An alternative might be the java based ogg player,
but I've not looked into that yet.

It would be nice if rmd also saved as something more than ogg - a
nuisance having to convert it if needed afterwards.

No
This isn't pre recorded tutorials but this kind of thing:
Someone asks you for support on a GUI program
you instantly go through the actions on your own PC, (automatically)
record and send the small video to a server then send them the link via
mail IM etc.
The videos are about 5 mins max
Imagine this used on the forums.

I'm currently working on something like this, but not specifically for
screencasts, but for any kind of video. It could of course be used for
screencasts.

It would be nice if we could extend recordmydesktop (for example) to
have an upload feature. Any python devs fancy having a go at an http
upload feature enhancement to RMD?

Cheers,
Al.

Note at 2 mins 20s in they introduce the malware protection:-

"..and this protects you from sites that are trying to attack you,
they're trying to exploit a vulnerability in one of your add-ons or
plugin-in or on your computer itself"

As if Firefox itself couldn't _possibly_ have any vulnerabilities!
Somewhat disingenuous in my opinion.

Cheers,
Al.
