[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 396898] Re: [i945GME] intel dual screen not working on karmic

2009-07-20 Thread alain57
there are definitively some improvement on the normal xorg intel driver
(or gnome-display-properties)

i had the same problem on my other notebook (a 15 acer with intel graphics)
i just test this notebook again at work, and now the dual screen work !

i didn't use xorg-edgers on this one.

but i guess that there is still a problem on my 10, because the max
resolution is 2048x2048 (funnily windows and macos don't have that
limitation) whereas it is 4096x4096 on my 15

a possible solution could be to increase the maximum resolution for the
GMA 950 like it is on the X3100

here the output of xrandr on my 15 (i don't have the 10 right now)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 401664] [NEW] No cursor is shown

2009-07-20 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-evdev

When I install Jaunty on my Zonbu nettop (essentially an eBox-4854) the
cursor isn't drawn on the screen. The cursor does move but I have to
enable the accessibility feature that highlights the cursor position
when you press ctrl to let me even able to some what reasonably navigate
the desktop.

The input device is a Logitech Trackman Wheel USB, it works just fine
with my laptop but on the Zonbu hardware the cursor problem is present
(perhaps a video driver issue rather than evdev?)

This is very disturbing in part of the desktop workflow.

Thanks for your help finding the logs! Assigning to xorg-server, confirmed
since logs are in comment #2. Just so you know, this section of Launchpad is
primarily used to help diagnose and correct programming errors in the
development release of Ubuntu, and is nearly entirely maintained by volunteers.
If you have specific hardware configuration problems that you would like fix in
the current stable release, please also look at the answers section and the
forums.
Thanks again, and please post any additional bugs that you find!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 401107] Re: Software runs as root

2009-07-20 Thread Marc Deslauriers
Thanks for opening this bug report.

Most of the daemons you've listed run as superuser as that is the only
way to have the necessary privileges for them to operate correctly. In
some cases, the daemons are protected by AppArmor profiles. This is the
case with cups and dhcp3.

If you have discovered a way of running some of the daemons you've
listed above as a non-root user, without losing functionality, please
open a separate bug report for each of them that includes
instructions/patches.

Thank you.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 401107] Re: Software runs as root

2009-07-20 Thread Fred
If that is the only way, then the software is bad, and needs to be fixed
or replaced.

I do not want an insecure system and potentially exploitable system
because of a setup with badly isolated processes and crappy software
that requires superuser privileges.

X.org can be fixed so it wont need to run as root, using kernel mode setting
(KMS). OpenBSD is interested in this.
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_itempx=NzM2MA

I don't understand why a network daemon (winbindd from samba) needs root. That
is absolutely stupid, and just begging to get hacked.
It cant be much different from a HTTP or FTP server, and running that as root
would be stupid.

In dhcp3 there was recently discovered several security vulnerabilities. How
convenient that it runs as root.
http://www.debian.org/security/2009/dsa-1833

** Description changed:

-

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 395515] [NEW] trackpad jumpy on Dell mini 10v

2009-07-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

boule% lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 9.04
Release:9.04
boule%

-- default ubuntu release, no re-spin of any kind, under gnome...

-- trackpad buttons integrated into lower corners of pad.
-- when attempting to drag (requires two fingers)
-- assume:
-- drag finger used on pad to drag.
-- click finger on button at bottom corner (left or right)

if the drag finger is ever raised, the cursor immediately jumps to the
extreme bottom corner nearest the click finger. The cursor seems to
jump to those locations even without raising the drag finger at times.

almost impossible to drag, often end up minimizing all windows, because
the jump to the bottom left corner where that button is placed. problem
is severe enough to be unusable by mere mortals.

I'm particularly patient... one can, being very careful, and in an error prone
manner, drag by ensuring that the click finger only contacts the pad to click,
and immediately raise thereafter.
This movement is unnatural (folks tend to rest their finger on the button while
finding the precise location.)

suggestion: de-sensitize area around buttons.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 401107] Re: Software runs as root

2009-07-20 Thread Marc Deslauriers
Feel free to open bugs with upstream software if you think they need
fixing. If they need to be replaced, feel free to open bugs here and
suggest adequate replacements.

Of course we want to reduce the quantity of software running as root. As
such, as soon as it is feasible to run X.org without the setuid bit set,
we will.

Our dhcp3 packages provide an AppArmor policy which greatly reduces the
risks of running it as root.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 401776] Re: screen corruption

2009-07-20 Thread Rolf Leggewie

** Attachment added: xxdiff-corrupted.png
   http://launchpadlibrarian.net/29286076/xxdiff-corrupted.png

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xxdiff

Running xxdiff on a hardy host and forwarding the display over ssh -X to
a karmic host results in screen corruption. This was still working fine
when the receiving host was running jaunty.
+
+ I actually don't think this is a bug in xxdiff, but rather in one of the
+ used libraries. Likely candidates are libqt3-mt, libx11-6 and libxext6.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 368135] Re: X crashes after a few minutes or seconds (Jaunty)

2009-07-20 Thread Sami Mäkinen
No crashes today. I still have sendcoreevents set to false, and
additionally I changed CPU frequency scaling threshold from 95 to 40, so
CPU speed is increased more aggressively. In a day or two, if no
crashes, will try setting core events back on and see if freezing occurs
again. Now I also have SSH server installed so I can check whether the
rest of the system remains functional.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 366404] Re: Unable to play sound on the second X-server

2009-07-20 Thread Bryce Harrington
The ck-* prefix indicates its a consolekit thing. Looks like ck-xinit-
session is a redhat thing used to set something up with consolekit on x
sessions.

Not sure there's really actually any X11 bug here... just sounds like
some script or something that needs to be run when xinit starts up.

1. comment out the PPA from /etc/apt/sources.list
2. run sudo apt-get update
3. sudo apt-get -y install apt-show-versions
4. sudo apt-get install $(apt-show-versions | grep -v $(lsb_release -sc) |
grep -v No available version in archive | awk '{ printf %s/%s

Verify the list of packages it says it wants to re-install in step 4, the
list of packages to re-install should be all the X server related packages
you see if you click the little arrow next to xserver-xorg on the PPA

Status in “fglrx-installer” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed

 Bug description:
 [updated]
Since the new version of ubuntu/kubuntu (9.04 jaunty) a new bug occurs with
ATI cards and desktop effects enabled.
With fglrx driver, the unminimizing of windows is really slow ... it can
take from 1 to 3 seconds.
Also, the maximizing, unmaximizing and Alt+Tab present the same problem.
The opening of a window present the same bug, freezing the system for 1sec.
This bug is under both gnome and kde (4.2.1)

Hi kelvan,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with
the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/)

If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Thanks in advance.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 335379] Re: Display resolution is set incorrectly

2009-07-20 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi amitk,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with
the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/)

If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Thanks in advance.

This is incorrect. That was a usplash problem, not GDM.

Likewise.

In my xorg.conf I had a line in the screen section:
  virtual 1600 1200
Changing that line to 1280 1024 fixed the GDM greeter resolution
 problem for me.

Seems to have had no effect - at least with an X restart.
