[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 432814] Re: Action for middle and right click is reversed since jaunty

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 502562] [NEW] IBM ThinkPad T20 (2647-84G) S3 Savage resolution in Xubuntu
Public bug reported: With LiveCD Xubuntu 8.10 worked ok in 1028x768 resolution, in case boot did not jammed to black screen. Then I tried to install Xubuntu by using workspace icon. Installation jammed during loading of partition wizard. Instead, Safe Video mode installation succeeded, but resolution is only 800x...@60hz. VESA drivers were installed. Both logon screen and workspace are 800x600. Workspace covers the screen only partially. I tuned the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf according to issues #48732 and #7804, but did not get rid of the problem (see extra comments). Now the resolution of the logon screen is 1024x768, but when system sets video settings (just after login), workspace changes to 800x600 scaled to the whole screen. That is also the largest resolution to select in GUI settings. I tested resolutions also with parameters HorizSync 28-51 VertRefresh 43-60 .. without success. Then I started LiveCD once again and copied xorg.conf file from LiveCD system to the installed system (with help of USB flash memory). But it was useless, problem continued. sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg did not help either. How to set the resolution of 1024x768? ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-savage (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- IBM ThinkPad T20 (2647-84G) S3 Savage resolution in Xubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/502562 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-savage in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 368946] Re: [i965gm] Closing and opening lid sometimes leads to screen ENDLESSLY BLINKING
I ran a apport-collect 368946 to provide you with some more information. This is a really nasty bugger. I have been playing around with it for a while now but could not find any 'workaround' so far. I reactivated CRTL + ALT + Backspace to kill X to see if it helps, but it does not. It even flickers in the Logon Screen. So I tried to kill the gnome-power-manager process, that did it for the logon screen. But as soon as I logon in a gain a new gnome-power-manager process is started and the flickering starts again. Killing this new one does oddly not help any more, the screen keeps flickering and after a while I get an osd-notify that the configuration for CRT 58 could not be set properly and it keeps on flickering. For me the flickering happens every time I close the lid. The only solution I found so far is rebooting the laptop. I hope this helps in the investigation. Please let me know if you need any more information. /schaze -- [i965gm] Closing and opening lid sometimes leads to screen ENDLESSLY BLINKING https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/368946 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 415667] Re: libx11-data: compose ellipsis problem
I have the same problem in karmic. However, the bug doesn't happen when one selects X Input Method as input method (you can change it by right-clicking on a textbox and choose from the Input Methods submenu). By default, karmic (and probably jaunty too) uses IBus. As a workaround, you can add export GTK_IM_MODULE=xim to /etc/environment. The drawback is that I face another bug using XIM in gedit: whenever I use a hotkey (for example Alt+... to access menus), the Compose key completely stops working afterwards. To make it work again, I have to reselect XIM from the input methods menu. -- libx11-data: compose ellipsis problem https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/415667 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xkeyboard-config in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 368946] Re: [i965gm] Closing and opening lid sometimes leads to screen ENDLESSLY BLINKING
This problem affects me as well, but it happens only when closing the lid, docking the notebook, and then opening the lid when docked. If I do not dock/undock the notebook, the problem does not occur no matter how many times I open or close the lid. The problem did also never occur when closing the lid while docked, then undocking and opening the lid while undocked The problem started appearing with 9.04 (upgrade from 8.04) and the problem is still present in 9.10 (upgraded from 9.04). In 9.04 I have found a workaround to the problem. When clicking any mouse button on the tray icon of Display preferences the blinking stopped. I had to click multiple times, because while blinking some events from the mouse are ignored (even movements). Besides that the blinking stopped, Gnome has lost the lookfeel I have configured and it reverted back to the default gray configuration. Somewhat later I found out that what actually happened was, that process gnome-settings-daemon was killed due to the click on that icon. Killing the process by hand then also helped to stop the blinking (e.g. Ctr+Alt+F1; login; killall gnome-settings-daemon). The last time I checked this workaround was no loner working in 9.10, which leaves me no choice but to reboot when this occurs. This problem makes my notebook next to unusable at work, where I use the docking station. -- [i965gm] Closing and opening lid sometimes leads to screen ENDLESSLY BLINKING https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/368946 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 502666] [NEW] Reboots Sometimes Lose Present and All Higher Resolutions
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg I see several reports submitted with similar and overlapping symptoms, but none says quite what I have observed after many repeats. It seems to come down to this: My notebook's 17 monitor goes to resolutions of 1440x900. So far with Ubuntu 9.10, no problem, but when I select a lower resolution, the displayed images squashes in so that everything in the image stays at the same pixel count. I cannot up a small, like 800x600 or 1024x768 image, to fill the whole larger screen. This is true of all recent versions of Ubuntu. May be something specific to the video card employed. With Ubuntu 9.04, this PC loses higher resolutions on some power ups or reboots. It might only show a resolution as high as 1024x768, or 800x600, and one time of 640x480. There is nothing displayed as a higher resolution choice. One exception was when it did display a choice of 1360x768 above 1024x768, and it would set at that size, jut it just suddenly showed up on its own. When it makes up its mine that there are no higher resolutions, you are stuck at not being able to tell it otherwise. Also saw on one reinstall that it kept telling me it had to revert to low graphics resolutions because of a parsing error in the config file, and when I tried to edit the file (an option at that point), it turned out to be /etc/X11/xorg.conf. The line reported to be in error was in the screen section, and efforts to change, even delete the line, kept bringing back the same error loop. My notebook has no problem displaying stable higher resolution images, so maybe there is a lack of adequate time involved when checking the video card for whether it supports a given resolution or not. Can't really tell. Might be a file read error involved at some point. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 491483] Re: Since failsafe-x was enabled in karmic it starts if gdm is disabled and kdm is used. (low graphics mode error)
Upgraded a Dell laptop Ubuntu 8.04 - 8.10 - 9.04 - 9.10. The last upgrade introduced a problem: upon boot there is a popup (of which only the top is visible, the rest is below the bottom edge of the screen) telling me Ubuntu running in low-graphics mode. Upon ^C I get a console prompt, and startx correctly starts X. The problem reappears upon reboot. Commenting out the last line in /etc/init/failsafe-x.conf avoids the popup. (Now no X is started at all, but I am happy with that and can start X with startx when desired.) -- Since failsafe-x was enabled in karmic it starts if gdm is disabled and kdm is used. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 502676] [NEW] Mouse Size Set At Screen Resolution Size
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg It's not a bug in the sense of something present not working, it is that something that should be there just isn't. There is no way to control the cursor's size or shape. Because of another problem in resolutions, where all resolutions up to 1440x900 have the same pixel size on my notebook, so just picking a lower resolution only means a smaller area of the screen is employed, going up to 1440x900 just means a very small mouse pointer is displayed, and under mouse settings, there is no way to adjust this. There are only adjustments for touchpad sensitivity and speed, and whether pauses over the touchpad count as mouse clicks or not. To me, it seems rather obvious that the apparent mouse size should be nearly the same at any screen resolution. Maybe they thought that all monitors automatically readjust their images to cover the whole screen surface, but this Toshiba notebook seems to go by a different set of rules, and the pixel element factor seems to be central to the way it adjust resolutions. Low resolutions is shown smaller, and high resolutions are shown bigger. And if my notebook is effected, many others should be as well, since this is a Toshiba Satellite model. I think the ideal solution is to be able to either hold to a constant pixel size and change the apparent size of the image within (sort of a zoom in/zoom out approach), so that I can go to 1440x900 to cover the whole screen but then view just what I should see in a 800x600 view it that were my choice, or to stick with the other method, of setting new pixel sizes by instructions to the video card, on the basies that it will then adjust voltages and timing accordlingly. I mean the old method was great for analog monitors, but the digital approach is more to the zooming method using software. Being able to use either mode would likely suit most people. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 502700] [NEW] Where Are Contrast And Brightness Adjustments?
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg First of all, the only Brightness adjustment I could find was under Power Management. That certainly does have a bearing on the amount of power consumed by the PC, but this is a visual adjustment and I think more appropriate under the Display settings. Second, Brightness as a factor in Power Management is probably more an issue when dealing with laptops and notebooks, not so much with desktop PCs. Desktop PCs also have separate monitors with their own settings, but that is not true of portables. And Contrast? Never found it, only found where others could not find it either. Many web pages have light colored text rather than black lettering, and trying to make that out against a light background is really hard. If there were an incorporated Contrast setting, I could deal with that. And it is certainly needed in portables that do not provide separate external controls for adjustments. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 426582] Re: (32MB) certain windows drawn garbled when XAA is used
I don't know about the formal bug squad procedures, but I'm just guessing that if a bug is essentially the same then it should be marked as a dupe. That's obvious... What harm will it do to just mark one as a dupe of the other? I selected this bug as the original because this is marked as affecting the Ubuntu release notes and is bigger in terms of duplicates and people affected. Marking one as a dupe would, I assume, add up the number of people affected thus placing this bug in it's rightful place in the search results, better demonstrating it's importance. -- (32MB) certain windows drawn garbled when XAA is used https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/426582 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xserver-xorg-driver-ati. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

What an irony - my laptop just hung when I was trying to put in a comment to this very bug! :-( but think it is the new Intel chip set drivers Yes, it seems to be the driver problem. Which means that it is the code regression and it needs to be fixed. However, despite the fact that the bug affects quite a number of users and has been open more than three months ago it hasn't caught enough attention from the dev. community. You have been subscribed to a public bug: I'm using Asus EeePC 1000H with the Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 beta (development branch). When I powered the computer on again screen distorts for a few seconds after the GRUB -menu and Ubuntu logo with Waking up - text before the desktop appears. This problem does not show up if the computer is shut down and started again, or in a reboot - only when returning from hibernation. This is quite awkward since with netbook I (and people) usually use hibernation mode because of its' low power consumance and quick wake-up time. This also happens every time on hibernation startup.
