[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541511] Re: MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash)
Brian, I've been using your latest ppa20+v9+cursorfix-generic kernel, and it has made my system usable again, unlike the previous attempts. The cursor freeze has disappeared, and I can once again watch videos in Dragon Player and VLC, neither of which could be used at all before. Oddly, flash video in a browser has always worked well, and the new kernel has not degraded performance there. The mouse cursor does still occasionally stutter, but there are no error messages that I can discover. Similarly, video sometimes stutters, but this seems to happen only on higher-resolution sources (like HD video), but I notice this only when playing fullscreen. Lower res video plays very well, including fullscreen. The system still sometimes freezes solid, but this behavior is greatly reduced from previous kernels, and is now at an almost tolerable level. Unfortunately, a system freeze means just that, so I have no way to determine if new error messages appeared immediately before the freeze. Freezing doesn't seem to be triggered by any particular operation, such as certain mouse movements, and it can happen just as easily when typing in a Konsole or resizing a window as when watching a fullscreen video. -- MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/541511 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 442629] Re: Touchpad too much sensitive after upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic
Bryce, This is the problem. Many people report this bug. You give this garbage answer that you want to hear from the original reporter or you will do nothing as evident from your posts. Really, does it matter if it is the original poster or the many more that report this same bug. Maybe the original poster gave up because you are giving the same answer that Microsoft would give. Fine you guys are busy and everyone can appreciate that fact. Hell maybe you just volunteer your time and don't even get paid and if so then thank you. But please stop giving these types of answer because then even any time you may volunteer is a waste of everyone's time including yours. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 631007] Re: Installing nvidia-current fails if ccache is enabled
Ah, yes. I also had CCACHE_PREFIX set: CCACHE_PREFIX=distcc I don't have any distcc servers enabled, which for everything else causes a fallback to localhost, but apparently this is what was causing the problem; unsetting this environment variable was also enough to cause the nvidia modules to successfully compile. I'm not sure why it makes a different to the nvidia module. I've built kernels with this set, and it doesn't seem to make a difference (the reason why I turn it on even when I have no distcc cluster available is that having this variable set changes how ccache calculates the hash for its cache, so when I *do* have a distcc cluster available, I don't end up invalidating everything in my ccache cache). -- Installing nvidia-current fails if ccache is enabled https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/631007 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 442629] Re: Touchpad too much sensitive after upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic
@Mark Thank you for taking time to report and comment on this bug. To maintain a respectful atmosphere, please follow the code of conduct - http://www.ubuntu.com/community/conduct/ From which I quote: '''Be respectful.''' The Ubuntu community and its members treat one another with respect. Everyone can make a valuable contribution to Ubuntu. We may not always agree, but disagreement is no excuse for poor behaviour and poor manners. We might all experience some frustration now and then, but we cannot allow that frustration to turn into a personal attack. It's important to remember that a community where people feel uncomfortable or threatened is not a productive one. We expect members of the Ubuntu community to be respectful when dealing with other contributors as well as with people outside the Ubuntu project and with users of Ubuntu. '''When you disagree,''' consult others. Disagreements, both political and technical, happen all the time and the Ubuntu community is no exception. The important goal is not to avoid disagreements or differing views but to resolve them constructively. You should turn to the community and to the community process to seek advice and to resolve disagreements. We have the Technical Board and the Community Council, both of which will help to decide the right course for Ubuntu. There are also several Project Teams and Team Leaders, who may be able to help you figure out which direction will be most acceptable. If you really want to go a different way, then we encourage you to make a derivative distribution or alternative set of packages available using the Ubuntu Package Management framework, so that the community can try out your changes and ideas for itself and contribute to the discussion. End of Quotation. If you feel unsatisfied with the measures taken to handle this bug, Please File another one describing your issue, complete it as much as you can and thus all same bugs will be considered duplicates of the complete one and even in case that you suffer a different bug, in cause or in symptoms, you wont need to waste more time here. -- Touchpad too much sensitive after upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/442629 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-synaptics in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 625239] Re: X starts on wrong tty: pressing enter after 5 minutes crashes X
@John: I do see a splash screen. Everything is relatively quick, as I have an SSD in my new System76 laptop :D I see a blank screen with a blinking cursor, followed by a quick flicker to the splash screen, followed by another blank-screen/flicker, and then the login screen. I think there's a very quick flash of text either before or after the Ubuntu splash screen, which seems it might be the message I always see on tty7: GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0). As for the timestamp of the file /var/run/gdm/firstserver.stamp, it seems to be the timestamp of the most recent clean boot. Thanks to all for the help. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 532047] Re: Plymouth text-mode splash causes X to crash on first run due to shared tty7
@Steve Langasek: To me, your response seems a bit harsh, as it appears (to me) to imply that my judgement must be bad, and I must be jumping to conclusions. I venture, you might be the one jumping to conclusions - or at least using a definition of the word 'fixed' that is incompatible with mine :) I have been waiting with filing this for weeks, months now, diligently reading _every single_ word in this, and many related bugs, not only on launchpad but also, e.g. on Arch linux. Forgive me if after carefully observing the behaviour again and again I have concluded that _indeed_ this is my problem. I don't know how the supposedly released fix doesn't help me, but I'm totally right (from a user perspective) that this _is_ the same bug in behaviour, symptoms, side-phenomena and probable causes. As far as I can tell this bug was already against Lucid, so to me it just appears the fix doesn't cover all cases. I _could_ of course open a duplicate of this bug... ? I don't understand. Call me silly if you wish. For the record, I just visited here because it happened again. This time, I caught the scroll lock coming on all by itself in the corner of my eye, at which moment I froze to see whether the crash would happen by itself. It didn't. I then changed vt's to vt1 to investigate. It turned out I had 3 X servers running (:1, :2 and :3; don't know what the third one is around for). The first session (mine) was on vt2 (the apparent root cause). The other two were on vt8 and vt9, as expected. The vt8 and vt9 had '-isig', where vt2 had 'isig' (in stty -F output). Needless to say, switching back to my X session (the one on vt2) and pressing other keys to complete the command, everything was fine. Just pressing the Enter key crashed the X server. Note that the other X servers kept on running happily. After logging in again, my session is now on an X server in vt10 (so we have :2 (vt8), :3 (vt9) and :1 (vt10) Perhaps of interest: I have what you might call a very fast booting system: dual SSD in lvm2 stripes, everything nicely block aligned for the SSDs. My regular boot time used to be around 6 seconds (measured in bootchart). It is now in the 8-9s range. Some of the time, boot time will be slightly longer (up to 20s) and perhaps that is when the symptoms don't occur. Other specs: Q9550, 8Gb RAM (you can see where all his going to end up being quick...) i386-generic-pae and nvidia-current Also note, that I have on all occasions performed (many) other keyboard operations before observing the crash: I practically _live_ in shell windows (being a dev + sysadmin addicted to ssh, screen, vim). This is particularly apparent from the fact that in the just-documented occasion, my wife had actually 'switched user' to a second X session, and the problem only manifested itself after switching back to my own session, unlocking the screen, and entering a few commands in the terminal window. It was the flashing-on of the scrollock light that caught my attention in time this time to slow down and observe exactly the situation. Now if you absolutely insist on me opening a new bug, I will just do so. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 628556] Re: Maverick screen freeze with shadow intel driver
Brian, I'm back from holiday. Running with shadow screen froze after about 10 minutes. Also, there was a crash on booting, and another crash 10 minutes later at about the time of the freeze. I had an ssh running just in case and used it to create a dump.tar including dmesg, i915_error_state, Xorg.0.log, uname -a, intel driver version, xsession-errors. I also saved the two crash reports one on booting and one when the screen froze and can provide them if they are of interest. Booting now with shadow commented out. I could try the Shadow fix on Beta if anyone thinks it is applicable and would be of interest. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 632048] [NEW] PS2 keyboad and mouse lockup
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg The PS2 keyboard and mouse randomly lock-up (and don't come back) but the OS continues to run. This can occur anywhere from 10 minutes to 2 hours. I can not identify any event that triggers this. There is no error in the system logs or the .xsession-errors files. When the lock happens programs on the screen continue to update (I have tried glx gears and it continues to spin and System Monitor updates). I can plug in a USB mouse and that mouse works. I can SSH into the machine. If I issue the commands rmmod psmouse; modprobe posmouse the ps2 keyboad and mouse will start working again (for a while). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 625239] Re: X starts on wrong tty: pressing enter after 5 minutes crashes X
@Jamie: Since I'm only another member of the community it's completely possible that I won't be able to see this through to a fix. A glance from a plymouth or gdm developer may mean more progress than I could make in days. If it's ok with you, though, maybe we can move this towards a successful triage state on our own so it will be easy for a developer to find the problem. I appreciate your willingness to try things. I may not recognize when we have enough info. I think your reply was very interesting. 1. You have a system that flies. This bug may be a problem caused by a race condition. A faster system may have different results than a slower one. How many processors or cores does your system have? What speed? I ask this to look for correlations between your report and those by others. 2. You are configured to use splash and it is working. 3. The timestamp on your file is correct. Because you were occasionally starting on tty2, I had myself half convinced that it would have an old date and that gdm wasn't even trying to start on the same virtual terminal as plymouth. It may be that gdm thinks plymouth's active terminal is tty1 (or maybe even tty2). 4. Between the time you see the splash and you see the login you see a blink. There isn't supposed to be a blink. That may be where your virtual console is switching from tty7 to tty1 and X is sealing its fate by starting there (or may not). Some basics first: You said you are running plymouth version plymouth 0.8.2-2ubuntu2. What version of gdm and upstart are you running? Next: Could you try adding the boot option plymouth:debug in grub and on that boot recreate the problem? Could you then attach the plymouth debugging log, gdm log, and the log from the failing X. It will probably be in Xorg.0.log.old after you restart. The failing X log will contain a traceback and say something about a quit signal or another signal depending upon the key you pressed when it crashed. @Dino: If you are still with us. Would you mind terribly telling us, when it fails for you, what you see? What versions of plymouth, gdm, and upstart are you running? What is your computer like? Like Jamie, does the creation time of /var/run/gdm/firstserver.stamp match the login time (it should). I'm just trying to confirm there aren't two separate underlying reasons for starting X on tty1 or tty2. Warning: If this is a race condition just adding plymouth:debug might change the timing and fix the problem by slowing plymouth down. The logs may still be helpful. I'm thinking that it's a race condition and that Dino's compiz experiment changed the timing. I certainly may be wrong. The purpose of the logs is to make sure plymouth is running on tty7 as expected, to see if gdm is asking if plymouth is active on plymouth's virtual terminal, and to watch where X starts. The idea is to get an idea where things get directed to tty1. We won't need the auth logs. They simply helped establish the interference from the getty process. We already know if you are starting X on tty1 that we have this problem. Whether you each have the time and inclination to continue on with me or not, thanks to you both for posting your experiences. -- X starts on wrong tty: pressing enter after 5 minutes crashes X https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/625239 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 36812] Bug 36812: Applying XKB patch to Ubuntu XOrg package
Hello X-SWAT team! I would like to draw your attention to one old and annoying XKB bug, which has been fixed by a patch few months ago. Although this patch seems to provide a reasonable solution for the problem, and several people reported it worked for them without any side-effects, it wasn't accepted upstream. The answer from Xorg developer was, that such a behavior would contradict the spec and the issue probably will be fixed with a new spec for XKB2. Unfortunately, the latter sounds like when pigs fly... It's also worth mentioning, that corresponding bug in Xorg bugzilla was filed 6 (!) years ago, with no notable progress until recently, and even now when patch is available it has been not applied upstream. Now brief summary of the problem. Issue: If KB layout switching is used, any keyboard shortcuts involving keys from key combination used for switching don't work any more. Example: If Ctrl+Shift used as layout switching shortcut (most common case), then Ctrl+Shift+T shortcut doesn't work in Firefox, as well as other Ctrl+Shift+Key shortcuts in all other programs. Cause: It turned out, that layout switching occurs on KEY DOWN event, thus preventing all further keys in a shortcut from being processed. Fix: The patch provides simple and obvious solution: switching occurs on KEY RELEASE event, which means, it will be fired only if eg Ctrl+Shift ALONE were pressed. Importance: It could happen, that Xorg developers who themselves use only 1 US layout, just do not understand how serious the problem is. Because of this bug, quite wide range of shortcuts is not accessible in ALL applications system-wide. And since almost all people outside English-speaking countries use multiple layouts (national + English for web addresses, programming etc), the number of affected users is also significant. What makes things even worse, is the fact, that it's not quite a priori obvious, that layout switching causes the problem. So typically user notices, that some shortcuts are not working in some particular application, and will be searching for solution for this specific problem - and will most probably find nothing. So did I, googled without any success, and only after some experiments later I've figured out, that layout switching is actually to blame. So it's a big time-loss and annoyance for all newcomers, who need to reinvent the wheel by themselves. That's why discussing this bug on Launchpad, we came to the following suggestion: Would it be possible to include this patch in standard Ubuntu Xorg distribution, thus saving all international users much efforts? It would definitely make Ubuntu distro even more user-friendly :) You can find full discussion and further details as well as the patch itself here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xorg-server/+bug/36812 Bug filed in Freedesktop bugzilla: http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=865 Many thanks in advance and hope for your collaboration.
