[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574069] Re: [Lucid] Loading nvidia-settings hurts compiz performance

2010-09-13 Thread flexgrip
Hello,

The following worked for me.

aptitude install libgnome-window-settings1=1:2.30.0-0ubuntu4

I didn't try any of the other fixes.

I am on an Asus UL80JT with integrated Geforce 310M and Core i3 running
Lucid x64. Stock kernels and everything. After that command and a
reboot, compiz acts like it should. Super smooth.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 636903] [NEW] External display through display port not working

2010-09-13 Thread Cima
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

External display using the digital Display Port (and adapter to DVI) is not
working. VGA output is instead working fine. Display Port output worked once,
apparently for no reason (just unplugging and plugging again for a few times),
but never worked any more. Booting with/without the external display connected
(or on/off) does not make any difference.
The laptop screen is detected as DP1, but no external display is found. The
output of xrandr -q follows:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1366 x 768, maximum 8192 x 8192

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541511] Re: MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash)

2010-09-13 Thread Brian Rogers
A real fix was posted for the invisible cursor issue, so I incorporated
it into linux-image-2.6.35-ppa21+v9patch-generic (building now).

As for the periodic freezing issue, that is covered by this bug:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29536

The patches there don't apply cleanly to 2.6.35, so I'll have to look at
them before I include them in a graphics-fixes kernel.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?)

2010-09-13 Thread Brian Rogers
My shadow branch PPA is now obsolete because the code was committed
upstream. So now you only need xorg-edgers and the xorg.conf changes to
enable a shadow buffer.

Jean-Marie, do you observe the glxinfo-triggered segfault if you remove
my shadow branch PPA and switch the xserver-xorg-video-intel package
back to the version in xorg-edgers? You can select the package in
synaptic and choose 'Package - Force version' to change back.

If you still experience a crash from glxinfo after making that change
and restarting, then go ahead and file a new bug for it and post the
link here, and I'll take a look at it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 591019] [NEW] UNUSABLE GNOME-SHELL/UNITY using FGLRX

2010-09-13 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: gnome-shell

Greetings,

After trying gnome-shell and unity on my Intel graphics card, I decided
to install Lucid, and give it a try on my Sony Vaio VGN-NW21SF Notebook,
equiped with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4550 graphics card.

Software info:

Operating System: Ubuntu Lucid Lynx

Video Driver: fglrx 8.732-0ubuntu1 (ati website 10.5 catalyst),
repository.

Gnome Shell: repository, ricoz, last build.

Unity: repository

Report: I experience the following: constant flickers, rendering
problems (text is deformed, windows are not rendered), basically its
unusable.

I understand that gnome-shell is still in beta, and it will not be included in
Maverick as default, but how about Unity.

This is a serious problem, which basically affects many users (I saw
numerous complaints about ATI) , so something must be done.

If you have a solution, or you know what could be the problem, please
provide us with information.

Thank you.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541511] Re: MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash)

2010-09-13 Thread Brian Rogers
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

This is a MASTER bug report, i.e. not a real bug report, but a tool to
  help manage other bug reports.

Most bug reports on i855 are probably due to the CPU/GPU incoherency
problem that is now consolidated upstream at
  http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27187 (which was split off
from a bug report for i845). For now, we mark all automatically reported
GPU lockups on i855 as duplicates of this unless there is a reason not
  to.

A kernel with the proposed fix is available at https://launchpad.net
  /~brian-rogers/+archive/graphics-fixes

To use this fixed kernel, run the following commands:

  sudo apt-add-repository ppa:brian-rogers/graphics-fixes
  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
- sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.35-ppa20+v9patch-generic
+ sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.35-ppa21+v9patch-generic

There is a similar master bug report for i845 at bug 541492.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 573101] Re: No video signal after Log out in gnome when multiple users

2010-09-13 Thread Leona
@Igor Wojnicki
I got 195 when I switched the driver from 173 to 'latest version' in the
hardware driver dialogue, (under the Administration menu) doing that,
downloaded and installed the driver itself, you then press Activate, then
restart your computer.
You can then check the version by opening the terminal and typing
'nvidia-settings'. I does not appear as 195 in the drivers dialogue, it just
shows as 'latest version' (why they couldn't add the version number here is
beyond me).

There is no need to look into the ubuntu repos, I can only assume its
downloaded from a Nvidia repo, not Ubuntu's? (I'm only guessing here, as
like you say, its not in the Ubuntu ones).

Hope this helps.

Leona.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 636294] [NEW] Xubuntu kernel 2.6.36-20 No X and NFS

2010-09-13 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Yesterday my Xubuntu 10.10 desktop was upgraded with (amongst other things)
kernel 2.6.35-20.
Then my X and NFS didn't work anymore.
I tried to install previous versions of the X-server to no avail.

Then I booted the system in kernel 2.6.35-19 -- OK!!

I got these messages when trying to start gdm.

inani...@renault:~$ gdm

** (gdm-binary:1501): WARNING **: Failed to acquire
org.gnome.DisplayManager: Connection :1.24 is not allowed to own the
service org.gnome.DisplayManager due to security policies in the
configuration file

** (gdm-binary:1501): WARNING **: Could not acquire name; bailing out

It's wierd, I've got two entries in Hardware Drivers: NVIDIA (173)

tried adding pre-released and unsupported updates but to no avail.

 Hi there,

I installed xorg-input-aiptek and followed the guide at . The
pen on my Aiptek tablet works but without clicks or pressure sensitivity. It
also moves the cursor only when the pen is actually touching the tablet. On
further investigation, there's no aiptektablet created in /udev/input. It
seems to be registering as input6. Here's a bunch of other possibly relevant
 data:

 ls /dev/input shows:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?)

2010-09-13 Thread E. Rinehart
Hi,
Would more log dumps and system info help, or is this problem well-defined
enough that it wouldn't help? I can provide info if it would help.

Also, since this trouble seems to be linked to Intel display drivers,
has anyone solved this problem by adding a cheap video card to their
system?

Thanks,
Eric

I've tried adding different video cards but I believe the problem is

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 633593] Re: Beta i845G no screens found

2010-09-13 Thread jerrylamos
I am a bit of a newbie so I'm not sure when to put the i915.modeset=1 -
can anyone help?

You can test it by booting up and at the first boot manager Grub screen enter:
e
then go down to the line that ends with quiet splash and add
i915.modeset=1
then do Ctrl-X

If it works successfully, then in Applications Terminal do
sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
enter your password
at the end of the line that ends quiet splash insert
i915.modeset=1
save quit
sudo update-grub
which makes an new boot manager list which should include the i915.modeset=1.

(/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/60-magictrackpad.conf) with an appropriate
InputSection would correct this issue. The Magic Trackpad can be singled
out so that the change does not affect any other trackpads.

This bug is dependent on bug 628214. The change for this bug may be
uploaded before the xorg-server bug is fixed, but it will not have any
effect.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 629711] Re: [Maverick] Removing external display on Vostro 3500 corrupts the screen

2010-09-13 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Looks like the kernel patch just landed upstream in 2.6.36-rc4. It was
also Cc'd to upstream stable. I'd hope that it would then be included
in the next 2.6.35.5 upstream stable release which would then mean we
might get this patch automatically when we rebase to 2.6.35.5.
Regardless, I've applied this patch and built a test kernel (see url
below). Please test asap and let me know your results so we could
possibly apply this as a pre-stable patch if 2.6.35.5 doesn't get
released before Maverick kernel freeze on Thurs Sept 16. Thanks.

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

Yesterday my Xubuntu 10.10 desktop was upgraded with (amongst other things)
kernel 2.6.35-20.
Then my X and NFS didn't work anymore.
I tried to install previous versions of the X-server to no avail.

Then I booted the system in kernel 2.6.35-19 -- OK!!

I got these messages when trying to start gdm.

  inani...@renault:~$ gdm

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541511] Re: MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash)

2010-09-13 Thread DavidM
Thank you brian - I've tested your latest kernel and it indeed has fixed
the cursor issue. On my machine, the periodic freezing issue from your
last kernel is not observed. I've decided to remove the rc6 kernel and
run full time on this kernel.

Question - what's the chances of the fixes you've got in this new kernel
finding its way into maverick? Its a real shame for those i855 users of
maverick just using vesa graphics.
