[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 678048] [NEW] Ububtu 10.10 won't display on Toshiba Tecra M1 laptop

2010-11-21 Thread Mark Schnitzer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Ubuntu 10.10 works beautifully on Toshiba Tecra M1 laptop with an
external monitor and no xorg.conf file.

The system works well with the external monitor and any xorg.conf file
that I tried after dozens of hours over 2 weeks, reading the forum posts
and copying the recommendations. I always put the xorg.conf file in
/etc/X11.

The native laptop computer monitor displays only stripes of various
widths and colors (unless the output is text only, then it displays OK).

VGA compatable controller, Trident Microsystems CyberBlade XP4m32 (rev
91)

Please help gain use of the native laptop computer monitor.

Best regards,

MSS

I can confirm the same, I have the same problem using maverick, and I'm
almost sure the issue started when vnc got upgraded.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 433142] Re: geode driver do not display 1024x600 on (K)UNR Karmic

2010-11-21 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Frank, I have no idea why setting ret=7 in lx_panel.c did not produce
any effect.

However, I'm concerned that this is turning into a big ugly hack that
will require people to compile their own driver, simply because setting
the desired mode is now completely dependent upon being able to change a
setting in the BIOS, which is not always possible.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 662998] Re: System freezes when running on battery

2010-11-21 Thread toker
i have the same problem with medion akoya e1210. in my case the culprit
seems to be the wireless driver and its disagreement with some power
management thing in the kernel. It uses the rt2860sta driver. When I
disable networking the computer runs fine with 2.6.35 kernel, it keeps
running fine when i enable ethernet, but as soon as wireless is enabled
it freezes on battery within 5 minutes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 590504] Re: [arrandale] Integrated intel graphics GMA HD doesn't work

Have the same problem, plus whenever I try to use an external monitor,
it refuses to display correctly, I get all sorts of wavy lines, like the
refresh rate is off. I tested the card in windows, and it displays
correctly, so the hardware is definitely functioning correctly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 678100] [NEW] Fujitsu T4310 touchscreen not working

2010-11-21 Thread Alathald
Public bug reported:

Not sure how this whole bug reporting thing works but I've tried
everything I can think of to enable touch on this computer. Stylus and
Eraser both work great but touch just does not respond. I've done a
complete system wipe/reinstall/update just before the bug report mainly
because I completely fubared X the first go round but everything works
exactly as I'd expect it to...except touch.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Really looking forward to
unity/multitouch awesomeness in narwhal...

Dell Inspiron N5030 running Ubuntu Maverick 10.10, kernel
2.6.37-020637rc2-generic.

The touchpad is failing to be recognised as a touchpad and being
configured instead as a PS/2 generic mouse. As a consequence, settings
such as touchpad sensitivity, scrolling, tapping, multi-touch etc.
cannot be altered in the slightest making the touchpad very unresponsive
and pretty much useless.

Here are the outputs to a couple of commands that may be useful:

It appears, although not mentioned above, that this Dell model uses an
Alps touchpad.

Please can something be done about this bug so that a laptop that offers
otherwise full support on Ubuntu can be made even better - this issue
seriously affects the usability of this computer under Ubuntu and I
suspect it will affect many users as this is a popular model!

Thanks

2010-11-21 Thread fractaluser
Hmm nope i havent actually. Though i've upgraded to the latest ubuntu and
the problem semes to be going away slowly. I still experience the same thing
but this time the timeframe is longer.
If i set my clock to show seconds i see exactly when it stops now and as
soon as i move the mouse those lost seconds are recovered and the computer
is in normal state as long as i use it.
I'll try to boot with those options u showed me and see if there is any
change and i'll get back to you.

Thanks for showing interest in my weird issue =)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 27541] Re: Touchpad should block while typing

2010-11-21 Thread Henrique Ferreiro
As stated in comment #20, touchpad blocks correctly, it is only a matter
of the number of seconds the touchpad is blocked.

I think the correct solution is to provide the blocking time as a gconf
setting and still use 0.5s as a reasonable default.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 661235] Re: live-cd boot does not work with nvidia ion (ZOTAC GeForce 9300-ITX WiFi)

2010-11-21 Thread Martin O'Mahony
I bought a new graphics adaptor to replace my old ATI one. The model I
chose is a Gainward GeForce 210 1024MB DDR2 HDMI.

Upon installing the new adaptor my Ubuntu 10.10 64bit system froze on
reboot. I tried booting from the 64 and 32 bit CDs always producing the
same result - freezing.

After changing the grub command line options to nouveau.blacklist=1
(as suggested somewhere on the web) I could boot my system and install
the NVIDIA driver instead which works fine, however, I no longer get a
bootsplash. Consecutively I made it a default in /etc/default/grub to
keep my system from freezing.

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash nouveau.blacklist=1

I did an lspic -vv, maybe it helps:

Anyway, I thought I might report this bug as a frozen system might be a
real showstopper for any Linux newbies. I'd be grateful, if anybody
could look into this.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 678137] [NEW] Xorg freezes, mouse pointer still moves

2010-11-21 Thread Stephen M. Webb
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

This is on a Lenovo T410 with the nouveau driver installed and an
external monitor connected, running 10.10.

Running kernel 2.6.37 on recommendation of a kernel developer in an
attempt to solve this problem. Same problem obtains with stock 10.10
kernel.

Main symptom: X display is frozen, no display updates, no keyboard
response, no clicky from mouse. Mouse cursor still moves, though.
Problem happens frequently and generally requires a system reboot to
recover.

Finally caught this while ssh'd in. Xorg cores with the following.

[ 1076.698] [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite
loop.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 678148] [NEW] Cannot boot with 2xHD5970 in crossfire on GA-X58A-UD7 motherboard

2010-11-21 Thread earthforce_1
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Booting the install disk is only possible if nomodeset is selected on
startup. It is possible to install, but when I boot the installed
system I can't even get to the desktop to install the fglrx drivers. The
system hangs with an ACPI error message on the console.

The motherboard is advertised as capable of supporting crossfire, and my power
supply is certainly hefty enough, (1000W) but the configuration fails to boot.
I can get a bit further if I enable nomodeset on grub after the install, but
the system then hard hangs with a couple of a messages something like:
[Radeon : ACPI error] The same thing happens if I boot the rescue
system.

I am able to install normally if I remove one of the HD5970 cards.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 346289] Re: Choppy Flash playback in full screen.

2010-11-21 Thread Ron_
This bug has been present on my Karmic amd_64 setup from the start. It
seems to affect most NYTimes videos, though most YouTube videos come out
clean.

I have tried all of the above fixes without success. I like some of the
features of Compiz (e.g., Place Windows), and since disablng it does not
improve my videos, I left it on.

This is probably an underpowered machine (e.g., GeForce 6150SE nForce
430, nVidia drivers), but since I use Compiz, I apparently can't take
advantage of better hardware acceleration anyway.

I developed a crude workaround using Greasemonkey that enlarges the
NYTimes' embedded Flash player by about 250%. (Find it at
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/90955 .) This gives me flicker-
free, high quality video at an acceptable size.

Comparing the results from my work-around to full-screen, I notice that
I get the most flickering not during the fastest motion, but during the
most sound. Perhaps this will suggest a possible solution strategy.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 678163] [NEW] [K8M800] Openchrome driver hangs on Ubuntu 10.10

2010-11-21 Thread Thomas Ribbrock
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-openchrome

I have a machine based on an Asus K8V-MX motherboard which until
recently was running Ubuntu Studio 10.04. Under 10.04, video was working
fine. The other day, I did a fresh install of Ubuntu Studio 10.10 on
this machine. After the install, the screen stayed black after boot, no
login screen, no virtual consoles - the only way to reboot was using
Alt+SysRq.

I used the rescue mode to install the openssh-server so I could analyse
the problem further. The next time round, I remotely logged into the
machine and noticed that Xorg was using 99% of the CPU. Killing Xorg
would result in a total hang of the machine.

I then proceeded to force the VESA driver, which gave me a working X. Further
investigation showed up
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-openchrome/+bug/660240
in which installing the latest driver version from http://www.openchrome.org
helped. Hence, I tried that. Result: After downloading the latest openchrome
driver (which is version 0.2.904), X was fully operable again.

Looking at the Ubuntu 10.10 package for xserver-xorg-video-openchrome it
appears to be version 0.2.904+svn842 - hence, it looks like the
additional SVN patch added to the Ubuntu package has introduced some
regression causing the driver to hang on this chipset.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 545096] Re: [lucid][R500 X1400] intermitent screen corruption (pink world ) - regression from -20 to -21 kernel

2010-11-21 Thread Mr. Norel
might be workarounds for those still affected - and forget about
nomodeset!:

-on fedora 14 use lxrandr to set a different resolution and then switch
back to (eg 1400x800/Auto for me)... was stable for 2 hours...

then I tried..

-vanilla 2.6.37-rc2 on fedora 14. no problems with flickering or lines
(never had pink world) for about 30min now... maybe this is already
fixed.

second option might be interesting for ubuntu users as well.
I'll test this when I have time for it

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 678192] [NEW] monitor resolution not found with intel driver

2010-11-21 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on a foxconn motherboard with intel built-in
graphics; I have an IIyama Prolite 2250MTS touchscreen attached, and the touch
function work flawlessly (kudos for that!). I only have a problem with the
monitor resolution: I can't get the native resolution of 1920x1080 to work. I
think it's a problem with the intel driver:
- when I startup gdm, X crashes with an error message in /var/log/Xorg.0.log:
[248211.694] (EE) open /dev/fb0: No such file or directory
[248211.702] (EE) intel(0): No kernel modesetting driver detected.
[248211.702] (II) UnloadModule: intel
[248211.702] (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
[248211.702]
Fatal server error:
[248211.702] no screens found
The only way to start up is to make a basic xorg.conf with the lines:
Section Device
Identifier Configured Video Device
Driver vesa # Change this to the driver you want
EndSection

Section Monitor
Identifier Configured Monitor
EndSection

Section Screen
Identifier Default Screen
Monitor Configured Monitor
Device Configured Video Device
EndSection

This was X starts up, with resolutions up to 1600x1200, but not with the
native resolution of 1920x1080.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 677129] Re: Please merge xterm 266-1 (main) from debian unstable (main)

2010-11-21 Thread Thomas Dickey
The debdiff has this comment in its patch for UXTerm.ad:

+ ! This includes XTerm-color which includes XTerm, which defines fonts.
+ ! Why set them here?

The reason for setting fonts in UXTerm.ad is that they're different from the
ones in XTerm, and override those values.

2010-11-21 Thread Mikael Honkala
A possible workaround for those who:
- Use a laptop (I guess)
- Rarely do a full boot
- Are still willing to wait for a while for the bug to be fixed

I have my laptop set to suspend on lid close, so after the machine has
stopped booting (no more disk activity), I suspend and resume. This
restores the screen for me with 260 driver.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 308191] Re: Multitouch support not available for Synaptics touchpads v7.2

2010-11-21 Thread dominic
successfully installed the package on

Many thanks to Henrik!

@Henrik: Is it possible to change the scroll behavior to roll instead being
very exact? The scrolling depends then on the speed of the fingers and does
not abruptly stop when removing the fingers from the touchpad - instead its
slowly decreases the scroll speed and finally stops (like on every mac or
android device).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 678192] Re: monitor resolution not found with intel driver

2010-11-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hmm well it looks like you have a 945g which certainly is supported by
the kernel modesetting driver, so I don't see a reason why it would fail
unless something is wrong with your kernel installation.

It's likely this is a kernel problem (either a bug or something with how
it got installed on your system), but first would you please run the
command 'apport-collect 678192' to attach logs that you didn't include
in your initial report.

Also, tell me if you're willing to try testing this on natty; if not,
like if you're only interested in getting Ubuntu maverick working on
your system one way or another, we should probably direct you to the
technical support channels. (This bug tracker is for ubuntu development
so we mostly focus on natty.)

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 677968] Re: Error in $HOME/.profile halts the X startup

2010-11-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
gdm would be where I'd start looking. Or look at the upstart rule that
starts X; it includes some error handling logic that you might augment
to cover this corner case too.

Any idea where would be a better place? Is it then just a general ubuntu

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 678148] Re: Cannot boot with 2xHD5970 in crossfire on GA-X58A-UD7 motherboard

2010-11-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
Fairly sure this is just lack of crossfire support in the open source
radeon KMS drivers. But just to check, have you successfully booted
crossfire in any other configurations or other versions of Ubuntu?

In any case, now that modesetting is handled by the kernel, this is a
kernel wishlist so I'm refiling there. However, this type of work is
normally done upstream so it'd be better to file this bug at
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/ against radeon.

Also, when filing bug reports please attach necessary logs. A handy
tool to do this after a bug is filed is apport-collect. Please run:

  apport-collect 678148

Thanks ahead of time.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 483001] Re: [needs-packaging] Wayland

2010-11-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
fwiw, I'm still working on the packaging, not ready for public
consumption. However I would be interested in hearing from people for
whom the packages do in fact work.

(Currently I'm chasing a bug in the mesa packaging).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 417132] Re: Driver for Tritton USB 2.0 to VGA adapter

2010-11-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
No; the issue is that X auto-detection looks only at the PCI bus. It
doesn't scan the USB bus for devices. So all USB2xxx type devices must
be manually configured. Maybe someday someone will implement USB bus
video device scanning in X.org but I know of no plans currently.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 474917] Re: nvidia drivers 185.xx compile into kernel 2.6.28 instead of 2.6.31 on update from jaunty to karmic

@Alberto, is there anything more that can be reasonably done with this
bug report? If not, perhaps the remaining bug tasks should be closed
out?

Impossible for me to say without knowing what hardware you have and what
versions you installed.

Again though, these packages aren't ready for public consumption. I'm
open to patches or advice on improving the packaging though.
