[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 741930] Re: [natty] nvidia binary packages for older cards - dependencies not met

2011-05-10 Thread Andrea Mazzilli
for the next Ubuntu release, if the nvidia-96 driver are not compatible
with xorg again, it's possible add a legacy xorg to the repository?

something like:
xserver-xorg-core (new version, for the driver compatible)
xserver-xorg-core-1.9 (legacy, for the driver that not support new xorg)

then the nvidia-96 package require the legacy xorg instead of the new
one

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 780358] [NEW] Random X crashes in Ubuntu 11.04

2011-05-10 Thread Carsten Agger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I've been getting random X crashes in Ubuntu 11.04 the last few days.
This occurs both at work and at home, i.e. on a Lenovo T series Thinkpad
and on an Acer Aspire 58x-series (if memory serves).

This is the backtrace in the Xorg.log from the most recent one:

I'm using Unity on both computers. The X crashes started about May 3rd
or 4th. Maybe a broken update? The two computers have different graphics
cards.

I first tried to get technical support at ask-ubuntu
(http://askubuntu.com/questions/40250/random-x-crashes-in-ubuntu-11-04),
but Jorge Castro asked me to file a bug.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 778083] Re: Switching workspaces does not always redraw everything necessary

2011-05-10 Thread Alin
Sven's solution worked for me also, I didn't noticed weird corruptions after
replacing the metacity with an older one (10.10). Beside of that, I
encounter a pretty similar problem when playing with the tooltip on the
'workspaces' preferences in the bottom right corner of the desktop (see the
attached screenshot) - a small purple area remain unrefreshed in the place
where the tooltip was raised. Anyone else experience this strange thing ?
Sorry if this is not really related to this defect, but this appeared to be
fine when replacing the metacity binary.

I've more or less confirmed that metacity is at fault: I've copied
/usr/bin/metacity from a Lucid machine to /tmp and ran /tmp/metacity

not had any corruption with that version (it's a miracle that it works
with Natty's libraries, taking into account that it's a year older, but
 it does!).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 763005] Re: Fglrx with Compiz's Sync to Vblank makes Unity/Compiz plugins to crawl

2011-05-10 Thread Aleksander Nowodziński
Confirmed.
The problem occurs with ATI Radeon HD 4250. Everything is really choppy even
with sync-to-vblank off and all those fixes enabled in Catalyst Control Center
(described above). Tested both on repository-native drivers and 11.5 from the
producer's website.

The open driver works very well with compiz+unity. It doesn't support
fast acceleration in games though.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 564378] Re: Fails to set MTRR for 2D acceleration

2011-05-10 Thread jasmineaura
aeromojito,

sorry if this is a bit late, but, could you try setting:
Option OverlayMem100
or if you want more than full dvd resolution (720x576) maybe a bit higher
OverlayMem, provided you are able (and willing) to go with modest resolution
and/or depth, to make more video ram available

and also set your DefaultDepth to 16, or even try 8 ?
I believe the X desktop will display in whatever depth you choose, but the
video - as it is in an overlay that is managed directly by the video chip -
will be in true color. You could even play with mplayer from console (no X
needed) !
see: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?p=31808#p31808

So, reducing Resolution (1024x768 or 800x600 ) and/or depth may help,
mplayer (or gmplayer if you shall) may also be preferable over vlc /
totem in terms of CPU overhead!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 657990] Re: System freeze when i'am not moving the mouse or typing.

2011-05-10 Thread Robert Premuz
I'd like to confirm that this bug exists in Ubuntu 11.04 with
Linux 2.6.38-9.43 on a Toshiba nb300.

As a workaround I set
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash nolapic_timer clocksource=jiffies
in /etc/default/grub and then run
sudo update-grub
sudo reboot

Note that the right option name is nolapic_timer, not nolapci_timer as
mentioned above.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 780424] [NEW] Xorg unresponsive after screensaver unlock with Dual Head

2011-05-10 Thread Druid
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

As background I'm running multi-GPU multi-session multi-head with 3
screens on two NVIDIA GPU Quadro NVS 290 (G86GL) cards (one on one, two
on the other). Machine is a quad core with 8G ram and 8G swap.
Individual gnome sessions on each screen (ie I can't transfer programs
between screens and each screen has full menus).

Occasionally after unlocking my mouse cursor rapidly flickers between
screens and the machine is totally unresponsive at the console.

Logging in via ssh and I can see load and cpu usage rapidly increases,
memory usage also goes through the roof until all memory and swap is
consumed at which point the oom-killer kicks in (or possibly Xorg
crashes) , kills Xorg and I can log back in (with my session lost).

In the mistaken assumption that I didn't have enough swap I increased it
(from 2G to 10G) all this did was allow the machine to be a little bit
more responsive for longer but Xorg still continued to consume memory,
last time it got to 11.2G of virtual and a load average of 24 before I
rebooted the machine. As a comparison, right now Xorg has 153m with load
averages all at ~0.5.

While I realise this may not include enough as is this is a reasonably
regular (and very annoying) bug for me, if any further details can be
collected at the time please let me know, I can (within reason) run
anything as needed.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 741930] Re: [natty] nvidia binary packages for older cards - dependencies not met

2011-05-10 Thread Pawel Jasnos
I'd say a simpler but still useful thing would be to make sure that if
some hardware isn't compatible at the time of release because a
proprietary driver is required (and that's the situation here - Unity
doesn't work on Nouveau), then a big, red note of that should be made
in the release notes prompt encouraging for upgrade, so that people
can wait until Nvidia or any other vendor provides updated driver.

Alternatively, the upgrading script should warn user about such
incompatibilities at the start of the process, allowing them to easily
cancel.

for the next Ubuntu release, if the nvidia-96 driver are not compatible
with xorg again, it's possible add a legacy xorg to the repository?

 something like:
xserver-xorg-core  (new version, for the driver compatible)
xserver-xorg-core-1.9 (legacy, for the driver that not support new xorg)

then the nvidia-96 package require the legacy xorg instead of the new
 one

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 680614] Re: Position of second monitor wrong in dual monitor setup if first monitor is 1366x768

2011-05-10 Thread Andreas Gölzer
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected natty patch

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

I'm using a two-monitor setup with an ati graphics card (Mobility Radeon HD
4300) on my laptop(lenovo u450p).
The Laptop screen has a hardware resolution of 1366x768, the external monitor
a hardware resolution of 1920x1080.

If I set up the second monitor using

  xrandr --output HDMI-0 --off
  xrandr --output LVDS --auto
xrandr --output HDMI-0 --auto --right-of LVDS

(or the kde gui, the effects are equal)
  I expect

  1) the left 1366x768 area to be on the laptop screen, and
  2) the right 1920x768 area to be on the big monitor.

  But I observe:
  1) happens as expected
  2) happens almost. instead, the 2 rightmost pixels on the laptop monitor are
repeated on the left border of the big monitor(filled with black to the
bottom), in turn the two rightmost columns of the virtual display area are not
visible on any monitor at all.

If I switch the laptop monitor resolution to 1280x720, this effect does not
occur, and - except for the then blurred laptop screen - everything works as
expected.
A screenshot shows the whole virtual desktop correctly.

  Ubuntu version: 10.10 (maverick)
  graphics card:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M92 LP [Mobility
Radeon HD 4300 Series]
  xorg version: 1:7.5+6ubuntu3
I'm using the 'radeon' display driver, as detected by default. fglrx is not
installed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 780092] [NEW] No SINGLE Monitor support

2011-05-10 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When I plug a monitor to my PC the monitors app doesn't offer the
correct resolutions to choose from and the only way to use it is to
select one well below of what the monitor supports. Randomly it offers
the correct resolutions for a little while.

I have experienced this bug in two Laptops one using a Samsung monitor
model number: lr23ws and another using a 40 Samsung HDTV.

I have read online that other people are having the same issue with
different monitors of different brands.

Ubuntu works perfectly on my laptop as long as I don't try to plug a
monitor but I have a Desktop in which I simply can't install Ubuntu
because it doesn't detect my monitor and I cannot use my $200 secondary
monitor with my laptop because the correct resolutions aren't detected
neither.

I have experienced this bug since Ubuntu 9.10 and I have reported it
before, the problem is not with multi-monitor support but actually with
making work a single monitor at all. Not being able to connect a monitor
should have more priority than what little is being given.

** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 777019] Re: kdm crashed when coming out of screensaver

2011-05-10 Thread Mark Fraser
Looks like this might be related to OpenGL as it only seems to do it
with OpenGL screensavers and I tried to do an advanced slideshow in
DigiKam over the weekend and that caused a crash when 'use opengl
effects' was enabled.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system

2011-05-10 Thread steveb
This configuration DOES HAVE the konsole problem for me:
  kernel 2.6.35-28-generic (amd64 maverick kernel) OR 2.6.38-8-generic (amd64
natty kernel)
  xserver-xorg 1.10.1-1ubuntu1 (natty package)
  nvidia-current 270.41.06-0ubuntu1 (natty package)

This configuration DID NOT have the problem for me:
  kernel 2.6.35-28-generic (amd64 maverick kernel)
  xserver-xorg 1.9.0-0ubuntu7.3 (maverick package)
  nvidia-current 270.41.06-0ubuntu~xup~maverick (ubuntu x-swat package)

xserver-xorg being the only difference.
It looks like either an Xorg 1.10 problem, or some interaction between the
nVidia driver and Xorg 1.10

2011-05-10 Thread Marcel Engelmann
Had the same problem. Installed it manually and all is fine again.

(ctrl+alt+1, /etc/init.d/gdm stop, sh nvidia (...).run, reboot
- on my machine. some elements may differ from your setup, - check wikis.
driver will be installed correctly if done by hand)

I also have the same problem. I fixed the problem in firefox going to
about:config and changing gfx.color_management.mode=3

it worked for firefox but not for thunderbird.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 649809] Re: the session settings manager can try starting before the login screen one exits

2011-05-10 Thread metchebe
When testing Natty in VirtualBox for the past few weeks It happened on
every login. I installed Natty on real hardware (Lenovo Thinkpad T61
with Intel Graphics) 4 days ago and this has happened to me twice, so it
is definitely not VM specific. A logout and login has fixed it both
times.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 731856] Re: Can't install wayland

2011-05-10 Thread Michal
Same here. Clean 11.04 installation, all I did was to enable Partners
and then I updated the system. No programs or repositories added. Then,
I received the error:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
wayland : Depends: libcairo2-dev (= 1.10.2-2) but it is not going to be
installed
E: Broken packages

So, I installed libcairo2-dev, but it didnt help, the error is the still
the same.

I EMPHASIZE that it is a CLEAN INSTALL without anything added!!!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 765136] Re: [natty] X often crashes since upgrade to natty

2011-05-10 Thread TiGR
Don't know where to post it, but I get some weird x crashes (gdm
restarts), which all seem to be produced by keypresses. I don't remember
which keys are these, but it happens when I type pretty fast. Logs seem
to have no segmentation faults or other anomalies, clean as nothing
happened.

I also have Nvidia-173 binary driver, Microsoft Natural 4K usb keyboard,
if that matters. I use lubuntu with gdm.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 451518] Re: [i945g] karmic: INFO: task i915/* blocked for more than 120 seconds.

2011-05-10 Thread marcus
This may be related to DVMT; Intel's Dynamic Video Memory Technology.
... its supposed to work with Microsoft's proprietary driver to
dynamically allocate video memory resources (up to 128 M) for 2D - 3D
performance and then return the memory resource to the OS when finished.
My machine defaults to 8M preallocated, 0M fixed, and 120M DVMT...

I changed the default settings to 8M preallocated 120M fixed and 0M
DVMT... and the freeze is gone... even with compiz.real running w/
screensaver.I left the silly thing running all night... no problems.

Perhaps the i915 driver isn't working well with DVMT ; Intel integrated
graphics chipset 915 945 ?

m harris

2011-05-10 Thread gabrys
I had a similar problem. GRUB configuration change didn't work. Adding
stuff to xorg.conf neither. But I managed to fix it using a Python
program that binds to D-Bus signal BrightnessChanged and sets the proper
brightness using nvclock command. Check this out at my blog:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 763052] Re: Ubuntu 10.10 can't boot on nvidia GeForce GT240

2011-05-10 Thread tuxmartin
The problem is in nouveau (experimental) driver.

Install Ubuntu from alternate CD and boot to text mode and uninstall
these packages: nouveau-firmware, xserver-xorg-video-nouveau and install
nvidia-current package.

My old Nvidia GeForce 4 MX 440 works fine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 780648] [NEW] Fail to repaint screen when external monitor attached while sleeping

2011-05-10 Thread Lightnin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Steps to reproduce.
1. Put machine to sleep.
2. Plugin external monitor of higher resolution than laptop monitor (via
external VGA port).
3. Wake computer.

Lower / left portions of desktop are displayed properly. Areas above and to the
left of the desktop (that correspond to x,y values greater than the original
screen size) do not repaint properly. They continue to display whatever content
/ application has been overlaid on them. See screenshot.

Possibly related config setting: The computer has been told to turn off
laptop monitor when external screen is present.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 770559] Re: Ubuntu fails to boot with nVidia proprietary driver

2011-05-10 Thread Mark Street
I've got the same issue with the 260 drivers (NVIDIA-Linux-
x86_64-270.41.06.run). I'm currently on the 173 version (NVIDIA-Linux-
x86_64-270.41.06.run)which is pretty slow but at least I can boot into
X. I cant get 195 to install (fails to build module and dies).

I've attached my kern.log file (stripped irrelevant previous boots).
Here is a sample of the error:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 774978] Re: xserver seg'd [945GM]

2011-05-10 Thread Geoff
Several days passed for me with no crash, until another just now. I
can't keep running strace for days at a time, due to the huge volume of
output, so all I have to share is another traceback. This time the
crash occurred upon the completion of a flash video displayed within
Opera. I suppose that's consistent with the above comment about crashes
while freeing buffers.

Alin,

Yes, the tooltips also corrupt my display as you describe. I've
described this (although without a screenshot) in comment #5.

With kind regards,

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 765136] Re: [natty] X often crashes since upgrade to natty

2011-05-10 Thread LGB [Gábor Lénárt]
Interesting, as far as I can remember, it was also my case, I mean X
crashed during typing always (?). Nowdays I can't reproduce this problem
anymore though ... (I am not sure if there is connection, but about
since then when I applied GRUB_TERMINAL=console in /etc/default/grub
since otherwise I have no text console just some odd garbage on the
screen if I switch back to text consoles with CTRL-ALT-F1 or so).

Feedback from nVidia that I got today:

Thanks for the bugreport. This problem has already been reported to
NVIDIA Engineering and is under investigation and should be fixed in
 a future driver.

Please check future drivers for the fix.

Unfortunately we don't have a schedule for this fix so I can't
 provide a timeframe.

 Bug description:
  Binary package hint: compiz

I have discovered a fairly consistent behavior: When multiple
aplications are open, the bug can manifest itself as: the active
window is blank (white in my case... title bar displays but nothing
else.) while windows behind it will display content. If one of the
unfocused windows is selected, it gains focus, and goes blank. The
previously blank window, no longer focused, regains its content and is
  no longer blank.

Switching between applications, the ones gaining focus always going
blank only to regain content after losing focus is quite infuriating.

To force an application to quit being blank, another application is
opened, and applications are switched until the blanking behavior
begins for the new application. (I use terminal as my dummy app...)
Terminal is given focus, observed to be blank, and closed. The
aplication which was behind the dummy application gains focus, and
does not go blank. (this has been verified in classic desktop, not yet
  in unity)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 600178] Re: Screen tearing when dragging window, in videos and other large screen redraws (on nVidia GPU)

2011-05-10 Thread jukka76
Seems that option Unredirect Fullscreen Windows does not work at all
if unity-window-decorator or gtk-window-decorator is running.

If Unredirect Fullscreen Windows is enabled and I kill the process,
fullscreen videos does not have tearing.

Thanks, Chris! I'd appreciate it, if a future driver fixes this, that
someone posts here how to get that driver.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 427291] Re: nvidia 173.x drivers caused a crash

2011-05-10 Thread izar
i have a similar bug.
i tried installing 173 driver on natty because of another bug.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/753144.
x didnt start. had to use vesa to change the driver back.
i think the same thing was reported by someone else in the spoken bug.
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/753144/comments/39 and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/753144/comments/55)

i think this bug isnt fixed but simply too old and it doesnt interest
most people anymore.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system

2011-05-10 Thread mr.goose
Thing is, NVIDIA has been aware of the issue for over a month! Five
weeks in fact. Perhaps if NVIDIA is unable to resolve the issue in a
timely manner, then it should release the source code so that others may
have a go?

I shall certainly remember this fiasco next time I ever consider
purchasing an NVIDIA product. Meantime, if I do find a fix then I will
post it here. But don't hold your breath! NVIDIA clearly is in no hurry
to fix this and we could be waiting quite a long time.

Best wishes, G.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 772207] Re: version 173.14.30 is buggy for GeForce FX 5200

2011-05-10 Thread Mike Ferreira
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 762478 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/762478

Wait a minute... This crossrference here says to be in error:
Remember: This is a duplicate of Bug 762478 (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/762478)

How is this Bug a duplicate of [nouveau] No icons shown in unity
launcher, which is a compiz problem right? Nothing there seems to
reference this graphics driver being installed but not being used.
Rather, Is this Bug a duplicate of another Not-yet-referenced BUG? Just
curious.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 727620] Re: [Radeon HD 5650 and 5470] Kernel BUG during recovery boot and in normal boot (Hybrid graphics)

2011-05-10 Thread riyasmp
Hi guys

I have a similar issue with my hp pavillion dv6-3150 SA.

I have been using 10.10 so far which had same problem with switchable
graphics and the ATI never worked.

I made a fresh install of 11.04 on the same laptop recently and the hot boot
returned me a blank screen when I chose 11.04. i did a cold booting and it took
me to 11.04 unity interface. logd out chose classical ubuntu desktop and tried
that as well.

The intresting thing is that live Cd worked alright on this laptop. At
the moment i am using 10.10 as 11.94 is not working. I would be able to
help any file from 10.10 if it helps.

since then when i restart X is crashing and I cant use 11.04. i tried to
seek some help from #ubuntu-uk channel. and some one asked me to put
command in the rescue mode( sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf
/etc/X11/xorg.conf_backup_20110508 )

I did that and it returned the output /etc/X11/xorg.conf no such file or
directory.

the output for cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | pastebinit is
http://paste.ubuntu.com/604907/

please refer to this link https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/fglrx-installer/+bug/698274 for detials about the bug that file last
year as well on 10.10

with regards

I wonder if the Nouveau developers actually receive this kind of
feedback. How can I contact them directly?

@actanner: Well, it's not Linux' fault, it's just one component ;-)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 780809] [NEW] [natty] sporadic crashes with segmentation fault (intel GM45)

2011-05-10 Thread Jae-hyeon Park
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Xserver crashes after use of a few days, with a few suspend and resume
cycles in between. I use the ubuntu kernel source 2.6.38-8.42 with the
patch of tuxonice 3.2 applied. I don't know yet whether or not tuxonice
has something to do with the crash. No error is found in
/sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state. One of the log files
transferred by ubuntu-bug has the backtrace.

I did not have this problem before update to natty.

Maybe related to the above segfault, there was a problem of a hung GPU
on a separate occasion. gdm log for this case is also attached. I am
not sure if this hang is related to bug #727594 since my chipset is
newer than those that are known to cause lockups.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 433142] Re: geode driver do not display 1024x600 on (K)UNR Karmic

2011-05-10 Thread frank huang
If you want to support a new mode(i.e. 1024x600@60), add it to your code, and
let that mode to be default.
See my reply on #75, #82, #84, #93, #95.

Thanks,
Frank

 Hello,
The bug affects also affects 10.10 Maverick Meerkat and 11.04.
Is there a way to fix it?
I tried every xorg.conf here, but none works!

 Title:
geode driver do not display 1024x600 on (K)UNR Karmic

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-geode” package in Ubuntu:
   In Progress

 Bug description:
Geode driver do not display 1024x600 resolution in (K)UNR Karmic.
Actually, the bug also affects Jaunty, but doesnt affect Intrepid.

I used to use a custom xorg.conf in intrepid, but it doesnt work on
Jaunty or Karmic. In Jaunty and karmic, I could only use 1024x768
whick makes the screen bigger than the real display and is impossible
to open new programs, specially in the menus (they simply disapear in
   the bottom of the screen).

Further investigations on other distros made me think this is a
regression from the xserver-xorg-video-geode 2.10.1-2. This bug
affects all drivers from 2.10.1 (which is in Intrepid). In fact,
Debian Lenny (that uses geode 2.10.1-2) works perfectly, VectorLinux
6.0 lite (that uses geode 2.9 - i think), also works. Jaunty (geode
2.11.1-1) and Karmic (2.11.4.1-1) dont work, they only display
   1024x768...

Actually, when I use the automatic configuration in Jaunty and Karmic
(with no xorg.conf), the screen really seems to be 1024x768, but when
I use the custom xorg.conf (the same I use in Intrepid), the screen
seems different... like it was 800x768 (I know it's wierd, but it
doesnt seem to be 1024x768 at all - everything is really ugly).

Hope it will work in Karmic in time.
   Thanks in advance.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 780843] [NEW] Different video issues with Ubuntu 11.04 and Dell E4310

2011-05-10 Thread Richard Pijnenburg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I have to major issues at the moment.

1. I can't get the screen resolution beyond 1024x768. If i try to put it
higher ( 1360 x 768 ) a part of the right part of my screen goes black,
but the top menu stays good.

2. When the laptop is in a docking station and i connect an external
monitor to it and put that one to a higher resolution i have the same
issues as mentioned in issue 1.

I had the same issues with 10.10 and upgraded to 11.04 with the hope it would
solve the issues.
