[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 740593] Re: [sandybridge-m-gt2 ] GPU lockup

2011-07-18 Thread Bob/Paul
I think I have the same problem. I just built a system using an Asrock
Z68 Pro motherboard (Intel Z68 chipset) and an Intel i5-2500K
(sandybridge). When using a PCI graphics card, things work fine (and I'm
sure they would with a PCIe card, as well). When using the sandybridge's
GPU, Ubuntu locks up frequently.

I do not experience any problems using the GRML live CD, which I assume
is using a generic VESA mode driver. I can double check on this.

Ubuntu 11.04 x64 Live CD locks up before I see the desktop. Installed
11.04 using the x64 minimal CD and the installed appeared to go fine.
Booting with the sandybridge graphics sometimes locks with the
splashscreen, before GDM has loaded. If GDM loads, it locks immediately
after login before a desktop appears if I choose any of the 3D
accelerated options. I have not tried safe mode or 2D Ubuntu Classic,
but Unity 2D worked for 5 or 10 minutes before locking up.

When it locks up, the screen usually goes black with a strip up the left
side showing a bit of random pixel blicking. I don't yet have OpenSSH
installed, so I can't check if it's still responsive that way. The
keyboard definitely does nothing, as Num Lock and Caps Lock keys don't
even cycle the LEDs. I'm using a PS2 keyboard.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 763005] Re: Fglrx with Compiz's Sync to Vblank makes Unity/Compiz plugins to crawl

2011-07-18 Thread Daniel van Vugt
This feels like the same issue as bug 145431 where compiz simply had the
wrong framerate so was trying to sync to the wrong frequency.

In older versions of CCSM there was an option to fix the framerate
manually. I remember it used to incorrectly detect 50Hz where it should
have been 60Hz. But I don't see such an option to tweak this in natty.

The turning off Sync to Vblank in CCSM workaround works for me (ATI HD
6350/5450). But it's not ideal enabling tearing. I want smooth graphics
back :(

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 567696] Re: [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop

2011-07-18 Thread TJ
After considering that many different video graphics drivers exhibit
this fault, I decided to focus on the kernel's DRM (Direct Rendering
Manager) code since it is common to all reports.

There has been a lot of change in the DRM code since the Lucid kernel
was released with Linux v2.6.32. As a quick check I installed the Natty
kernel via the linux-image-generic-lts-backport-natty package in the
lucid-proposed archive. This contains the Linux v2.6.38 kernel.

So far I've been unable to trigger the fault since booting the v2.6.38
kernel via any of the triggers that were guaranteed to cause the fault
with v2.6.32.

I suggest others affected by this fault try the same kernel update to
confirm this is a viable solution.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 763005] Re: Fglrx with Compiz's Sync to Vblank makes Unity/Compiz plugins to crawl

2011-07-18 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Tracked down the problem. (Obviously) ATI's implementation of
GLX_SGI_video_sync does not behave the way compiz expects it to. And
compiz is frequently skipping 1-2 frames, making a 60Hz display actually
render compiz at 20-30Hz.

The confusion is that compiz expects glXGetVideoSyncSGI to return
immediately but with fglrx it seems to take a whole frame or two before
returning. Though I can't find proof that ATI is at fault and have
violated the spec at all
(http://www.opengl.org/registry/specs/SGI/video_sync.txt).

Shouldn't matter though. The fix for compiz is simple and should work
with all drivers. Almost done...

After I had switched from ATI I found that the problem also occurs with
some NVidia cards. Initially everything is alright but after couple of
hours (NVidia 9600GT) the same strange thing is happening. Perhaps it's
some kind of general Compiz issue?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 777493] Re: nvidia drivers activated but not in use on natty 11.04

2011-07-18 Thread Linuxexperte
@ William Chambers,

no it doesn't seem so. And what I discovered by testing LMDE again
yesterday: LMDE suffers the same bug und also other
distributionsThis guys at nvidia really need to be pushed into this
work!! they broke it, so they've got to fix this!!! Even the new driver
on their page is only for 32bit-versions and not for 64bit-versions!!
And this is disgusting as 32bit-versions are not working on my
machine!!!

So I would appreciate, if another developer would take over and fix
this. This is a big severe bug, as hundreds of user claim that this
driver is no longer working and my grphiccard seems to be at a near
meltdown in the meantime.

So please guys: could you take over and fix this?? I would be really
thankful.

Greetings
Linuxexperte

improve Vsync behaviour for Nvidia too.

Always remember to enable sync to vblank in your driver control panel
too. For ATI Catalyst it's called Tear Free Desktop.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 567696] Re: [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop

2011-07-18 Thread TJ
I've managed to trigger the fault using kernel v2.6.38 from Natty whilst
running the Software Sources update after enabling additional
repositories.

I noticed in previous debugging sessions that the DRM_DEBUG messages
emitted when enabled in the kernel with

echo 1 | sudo tee /sys/module/drm/parameters/debug

Shows hundreds of calls to radeon_freelist_get() and additionally the
reported done_age doesn't increment. E.g:

Jul 18 17:30:55 A7M266D kernel: [27706.636121] [drm:drm_ioctl], pid=923,
cmd=0xc0286429, nr=0x29, dev 0xe200, auth=1
Jul 18 17:30:55 A7M266D kernel: [27706.636142] [drm:radeon_freelist_get],
done_age = 628
Jul 18 17:30:55 A7M266D kernel: [27706.636153] [drm:radeon_freelist_get],
done_age = 628
Jul 18 17:30:55 A7M266D kernel: [27706.636158] [drm:radeon_freelist_get],
done_age = 628
Jul 18 17:30:55 A7M266D kernel: [27706.636163] [drm:radeon_freelist_get],
done_age = 628
Jul 18 17:30:55 A7M266D kernel: [27706.636168] [drm:radeon_freelist_get],
done_age = 628
Jul 18 17:30:55 A7M266D kernel: [27706.636173] [drm:radeon_freelist_get],
done_age = 628
Jul 18 17:30:55 A7M266D kernel: [27706.636178] [drm:radeon_freelist_get],
done_age = 628
Jul 18 17:30:55 A7M266D kernel: [27706.636184] [drm:radeon_freelist_get],
done_age = 628
Jul 18 17:30:55 A7M266D kernel: [27706.636189] [drm:radeon_freelist_get],
done_age = 628
Jul 18 17:30:55 A7M266D kernel: [27706.636194] [drm:radeon_freelist_get],
done_age = 628

My initial analysis makes me think that there's a logic bug in
radeon_cp_get_buffers() that causes it to get stuck in the loop:

for (i = d-granted_count; i  d-request_count; i++) {
buf = radeon_freelist_get(dev);
...
d-granted_count++;
}
return 0;

I shall be working to obtain more specific details that can lead to an
explanation and fix for this.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 805777] Re: screen freeze at login

2011-07-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Michael,

From your log files I'm not spotting an obvious X error. Are you able
to reproduce this bug?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 798830] Re: Xorg freeze

2011-07-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
Unfortunately there are no freeze analysis tools for vmware that I know
of, so I can't advise on how to further debug this issue.

Since we're in the middle of development, there have been a few
transitions outside of X which could have caused some disruption. E.g.
kernel driver conflicts or some such. There's no error messages in any
of your logs though, so impossible to say for sure.

Are you able to reproduce this bug?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 495553] Re: [K8M800] Maverick 10.10 live-CD login failure, ttyN screens don't work, on Averatec 3280 running Lucid

2011-07-18 Thread Peter Belew
I downloaded the 16 July 2011 build of 10.04.3, and apparently the
repaired driver has not been backported to this release.

Two issues:

1. the screen comes up in 1600x1200 or something like that, so the
bottom right of that screen image does not show on the 1024x768 panel,
as before.

2. A login dialog shows up, in the lower right of the screen (center of
1600x1200 image), which means the system tried to start gdm, failed, and
showed a login dialog. Trying to log in with 'ubuntu' and a blank
password results in the same thing happening again after several
seconds.

So this RC of 10.04.3 is unusable on this system.

I wasn't able to access any files generated during system startup.

This system has 11.04 installed, and works with the 11.10 alpha-2 live
cd, also with the 2011-07-05 daily build of Kubuntu 11.10. BTW this
11.10 Kubuntu is the first Kubuntu I've tried on this laptop, since the
earlier screen-size problem results in Kubuntu's panel being off-screen
on the bottom.

2011-07-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Fabio,

Are you able to reproduce this freeze with current oneiric?

If so, please collect a mmiotrace on the bug.

 $ mount -t debugfs debugfs /sys/kernel/debug
 $ echo mmiotrace  /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/current_tracer
 $ cat /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/trace_pipe  mydump.txt
 Start X or whatever.
 $ echo X is up  /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/trace_marker
 $ echo nop  /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/current_tracer
 Check for lost events.

For more help on using mmiotrace, see
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=blob;f=Documentation/trace/mmiotrace.txt

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 811640] Re: [gm45] GPU lockup render.IPEHR: 0x78080003

2011-07-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Alexander, I notice in the trace that the code seems to be stuck in
code called by /usr/lib/libutouch-grail.so.1, which is the multitouch
code, and that you also have MatchIsTouchpad on specified in your
xorg.conf.

Are you able to reproduce this with current oneiric? If so, please move
aside your xorg.conf and restart X, and see if you can reproduce the bug
then.

If not, then perhaps this is a multitouch related bug. I've prepared a
PPA with the Ubuntu multitouch Xi2 components disabled, to help identify
whether the bug is in Ubuntu's MT code or in upstream's code; please
install this PPA and see if you can reproduce it. Note that some of the
Ubuntu-added MT functionality won't be available with this PPA.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 811856] Re: touchpad stopped working 2011-jul -17

2011-07-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Susan, I have several questions I need to know to better understand
your problem:

1. Your bug report is missing some of the standard files that should
be included with X bug reports. Did you file this bug using the command
'ubuntu-bug xorg'? (I ask because if you did, we may have a bug in the
script.)

2.  Run the command 'apport-collect 811856'

3. Please attach your /var/log/dpkg.log file

4. Please downgrade to the earlier version of xserver-xorg-input-
synaptics (probably 1.3.99+git20110116.0e27ce3a-0ubuntu15) and verify
the bug goes away. You can find a deb of this version under 'Built

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 809192] Re: Screen is dark after Update on r600 4290HD

2011-07-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
Setting screen physical size to 508 x 285 in Xorg.0.log

That is 20.5 x 11, which doesn't seem that weird to me, assuming you
have a widescreen display.

(II) RADEON(0): Max Image Size [cm]: horiz.: 52 vert.: 29

It appears to be detecting this size and the resolution properly. If
you think these numbers are incorrect, it could be a bug in the kernel's
KMS code, and so should file a bug there. In any case, even if they're
incorrect this wouldn't cause a black screen.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 764700] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in utouch_frame_sync()

2011-07-18 Thread Timo Kluck
I have been running Bryce's patched version of Xorg for a while. I still
experience occasional crashes. However, I haven't succeeded in crashing
X by moving my stylus along the screen like a madman (like what I
described earlier).

I found out that I can reliably produce a crash by running the
fingerpaint example of qt4, (apt-get install qt4-demos) and touching the
screen. I have attached a backtrace.

These may be two unrelated bugs since one involves the stylus and the
other involves touch input. Let me know if I should file a second bug
report.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 809192] Re: Screen is dark after Update on r600 4290HD

2011-07-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Timo Witte,
avivotool can be used to assist in debugging this issue. avivotool is provided
with the radeontool package, so to install it run:

sudo apt-get install radeontool

After installing it, you run it like this:

sudo avivotool regs all  regdump_good.txt
sudo avivotool regs all  regdump_broke.txt

Run it two times. Once when you have a working screen (for any driver),
and once in the broken case (either from the tty console or logged into
the sick box remotely). Attach both of those to this bug report, and we
can then forward this issue upstream. Thanks ahead of time!

After updating the package

You should also review your /var/log/dpkg.log to see what other packages
might have been upgraded around the same time frame. Often blank screen
bugs are not due to -ati but rather the kernel or mesa. So, it would be
helpful if you would test downgrading other packages that were upgraded
at that same time, so you can definitively identify which package caused
the regression. .debs for older versions of packages can be found on
launchpad via the Publishing History page.

Hi Laurent,

Upstream's comment about the record extension reminded me of a recent
bug we had that was traced to that extension and fixed last month. I
see in this bug report you were running the bugged version (-evdev u12).
The fix was backported to natty-updates as version u12.1 - can you
update to latest version of natty with this version of evdev? I think
it will solve this bug.

Bryce: before you spend too much time on it: I cannot immediately

I may be able in the near future to switch to Oneiric for 'production';
from that point onwards I'll be able too see if the incidental

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 752157] Re: [RS880] graphical corruption in launcher (Solid grey rectangles over icon text and window borders)

2011-07-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
Is it worth booting a natty liveCD and seeing if I can reproduce it
there?

Probably not; we're no where near identifying what package was bugged,
let alone have a patch identified, so at this point a backport to natty
is looking unlikely. However, I'll open a natty task in case anyone
would like to do the legwork of chasing down the patch and proposing it
for an SRU. (First isolate which package contains the fix by
selectively upgrading packages to the oneiric versions, then do a git
bisect on that package to pinpoint the patch that fixed it; then see the
StableReleaseUpdates wiki page for directions on how to file SRUs.)

Since we've not heard from Martin, I'm going to go ahead and assume your
findings are true that this is fixed in oneiric and close out this bug
report; if anyone does see the bug in oneiric please open a new report
(ubuntu-bug xorg) so we have updated logs and such. (Reference this bug
report if you're certain it's the same issue.)

Hi Tan Kan,

Can you please re-confirm this bug still affects oneiric?

There have been several other -ati artifact bugs that users are
reporting they saw on natty but don't happen with oneiric so it'd be
reasonable to guess this one got fixed as well.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 810653] Re: Gestures won't work on HP/Compaq mini 311 touchpad

2011-07-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Peter,

The bug you reference was filed against the linux kernel. Is there a
reason you believe the bug is in the X driver (xserver-xorg-input-
synaptics) instead? If so, please elaborate.

Also, your description is rather terse and doesn't give me an
understanding of the problem you're seeing. Please edit the description
and expand on the problem description. For example, identify exactly
the steps you follow to reproduce the issue, each of the symptoms
experienced, any workarounds you've found and whether they work or not,
etc.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 801763] Re: Typing causes cursor to stick

2011-07-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
Seems logical to keep the 0.5s decrease patch as a workaround until the
proper underlying patches are identified.

I suppose they'll eventually bubble up in future releases of things, so
you could leave the workaround in place for oneiric with plan to test
reverting it in oneiric+1 to see if it's still needed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 764700] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in utouch_frame_sync()

2011-07-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
Just taking a superficial look, the bug is still in the input event
stack, and happens in an area of the code that may be difficult to
patch.

There are some Ubuntu-authored patches in the input stack for utouch and
the touch framework which might be involved in some fashion here,
although it's hard for me to be certain just judging these crash dumps.

I've prepared a PPA that have the multitouch patches switched off for
you to test. These will help isolate whether the bug is in the ubuntu
MT patches or might be something upstream. Please install this PPA and
test it, and report here if you can or can't get it to crash after that:

  https://launchpad.net/~bryce/+archive/melon

If it still crashes, the next step would be for you to uninstall that
PPA (use ppa-purge) and then install xorg-edgers and try reproducing on
that. If it *still* crashes, then the bug should be forwarded upstream
at that point.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 811624] Re: impossible to change resolution with xrandr

2011-07-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
I've only seen outputs named 'default' on -nvidia (which does not
support XRANDR). Perhaps you were looking at some out of date
directions, or directions for -nvidia instead of -fglrx.

In any case, Brendan is right. According to your xrandr output you
don't have a display named 'default' so the error message is correct in
this case.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 810339] Re: Garbage when using qemu/kvm and cirrus emulation

2011-07-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Marc,

Thanks for including a patch! A few questions though:

a. Did you write this patch yourself, or obtain it from someplace else?
If so, can you provide a link to where it came from?

b. Do you know if this patch has been sent upstream yet? If not, it'll
need forwarded there.

c. Did you test this patch yourself locally and verify it does fix the
issue for you? Do you know of anyone else that has tested it?

Meanwhile, I'm assigning the bug to RAOF for him to consider for
inclusion in oneiric's mesa package.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 807347] Re: package fglrx 2:8.861-0ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade due to missing /usr/lib/dri

2011-07-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
@Alberto, assigning to you; it looks like a pretty straightforward
packaging bug. Just need to make sure /usr/lib/dri exists.

** Summary changed:

- package fglrx 2:8.861-0ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade:
update-alternatives: error: unable to make /usr/lib/dri/fglrx_dri.so.dpkg-tmp a
symlink to /etc/alternatives/x86_64-linux-gnu_fglrx_dri: No such file or
directory
+ package fglrx 2:8.861-0ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade due to missing
/usr/lib/dri

** Description changed:

+ [Problem]
+ The /usr/lib/dri directory was not present, so fglrx failed to install.
Simply running sudo mkdir /usr/lib/dri fixed this problem for me. Installing
gstreamer apparently also causes the directory to be created so installing
gstreamer first will allow avoiding the problem.

2011-07-18 Thread Miklos Espak
I added the kernel to the affected projects. I found the same bug on
kernel.org. Same VGA chipset, same symptoms. It was reported at
Christmas, and no response arrived, though.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 761065] Re: [Sandybridge] Spurious *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... blt ring idle messages in dmesg when using compiz

2011-07-18 Thread Stephen Rees-Carter
The fix in #18 solves micro-freeze problems with OpenGL (i.e. games), but it
does not solve them for normal usage.
For example, it has locked up 3 times during the writing of this message.

Also note, I have 'noapic' in my GRUB config as well, as that is the only way I
can get my laptop to successfully boot.
The full line is:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash noapic i915.semaphores=1

Bug #806434 has the full specs of my laptop for those who are
interested.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 803012] Re: Intel driver incorrectly renders some UI elements

2011-07-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

- Some UI elements from wine and fvwm don't render correctly when using
- the Intel driver. This can be observed in screenshots shown in the
- following links:
+ [Impact]
+ Widespread occurrences of rendering corruption with -intel. It is cosmetic
but looks very ugly.
+
+ The issue is caused by a buggy optimization added in upstream commit
+ 3055d401, uxa: Use Composite rather than solid blitter for PolyRect
+ added in 2.12.0 (i.e. Maverick).
+
+ [Development Fix]
+ Upstream simply dropped the optimization entirely; their longer term plans
are to provide better performance via the new SNA acceleration architecture
(which we might ship in oneiric).
+
+ [Stable Fix]
+ See attached debdiff. It is a backport of the upstream patch to natty.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ The bug exhibits itself in different ways for different people, and has
different steps for reproducing. For example, tabbing between windows, closing
windows, selecting text, etc. Generally you'll see corruption, blackness, or
lines surrounding or related to text or dropdown windows.
+
+ But in general, booting on affected hardware and using for a period of
+ time will eventually trigger creation of the artifacts.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Probably low. In theory, removal of an optimization path would risk some
performance loss, however in practice we're not seeing anyone reporting that
the performance got noticeably worse. In any case, it is not expected that the
performance loss would be very large, and small performance impacts to resolve
a screen corruption issue would probably be a fair trade.
+
+ [Original Report]
+ Some UI elements from wine and fvwm don't render correctly when using the
Intel driver. This can be observed in screenshots shown in the following links:

  https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28798
  https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29401
  http://askubuntu.com/questions/29642/black-or-corrupt-ui-artifacts-under-wine/

  These issues have been attributed to errors in UXA utilising the 3D pipeline
for core rendering.
  Upstream has disabled this to resolve this issue for now.

  I have applied their patch (commit: 855ced5a4eb67e287001ae22cb6489639c548cfa)
to test this fix, which works for me here:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 812639] [NEW] EGL/GLES/OpenVG should use alternatives system

2011-07-18 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Public bug reported:

As a result of discussion at the Dublin sprint it was decided to provide
an alternative system for EGL providers, similar to the libGL one
currently in existence.

This will put libEGL, libGLES{1,2} and libOpenVG in a mesa-specific
subdirectory, mesa-egl. Mesa's libEGL will set up an alternative to a
ld.so.conf snippet to add this path to the library linker.
