[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 927155] Re: [snb-m-gt2+] Viewsonic VA2012w not correctly detected (Invalid EDID)

2012-03-06 Thread Alan Pope
Hi Bryce,

Thinking back over the history of this display. It was previously one of
a pair of identical screens each plugged into ports on an nVidia 7900 in
twinview. So I would have always had an xorg.conf to maintain the
twinview settings and 3360x1050 resolution. I have also just tested a
12.04 live CD with the screen attached to another nVidia based desktop
and I get the same problem, so it does look like a monitor-specific
thing rather than a video-card related issue, and may well not be a
regression after all.

I will try the other things you suggest though.

That already happens. In one of the previous cycles I changed Jockey
to compare the xorg-video-abi-* between the server and the driver, and
only show a driver if they match.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 940564] Re: nvidia-graphics-drivers (295.20-0ubuntu1), is causing failed restarts & shutdowns

2012-03-06 Thread Doug McMahon
Decided to revisit this on a new 2 day old Beta1 install
Was using the .10 drivers from the get go, fully updated regularly, no
restart/shutdown issues.

Updated nvidia-current tonight to the .20, just like clockwork after 3 normal
restarts over the course of an hr. or the 4th one failed.
Again here now real issue for 12.04, likely that the .10 package will remain
viable for install. Just wonder if this may become more than a rare issue once
the user hardware base increases, time will tell

I guess there would be no consideration of making the .10 driver
'nvidia-current' & making use of nvidia-current-updates for .20 or
higher

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948234] Re: xorg intel driver returns less than 3fps in glxspheres test

2012-03-06 Thread RichardHDF
Hi Bryce,

I do not think this has anything to do with the NVidia card. There is
unfortunately no option to turn the card off in the BIOS. The reason I
believe it has nothing to do with the NVidia card, is because I recently
had the same hardware setup running in Arch Linux, and the intel card
tested fine on glxspheres. I am not experiencing issues with bumblebee.

Please do not mark the bug as invalid before you have taken the time to
try and understand the issue. I know this is crunch time for the devs,
because you want to meet the deadlines before 12.04 is released, but
automatically shifting the blame to bumblebee doesn't count as squashing
a bug.

The glxspheres was run against my intel card after I purged the
bumblebee install from my system. Glxspheres reports an inferior frame
rate as opposed to results I got on Arch Linux previously. It should be
capped at 30 fps; I'm getting 2.9 max fps (note with bumblebee not even
installed on my pc).

I would appreciate you reconsidering the status of this bug.

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I am not sure how to reproduce it. But I found that the problem is
predominant when I enable power related options in the mother board
(DX58SO) like EIST and others. It seems some application loading or any
task initaition causes this system restart, this application or task
could be anything. Tha last time it happened when youtube video was
going to load (Firefox 10). I have never got the problem when the system
is idle.

Addtionally, this bug is valid of all non LTS Ubuntu Versions.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 921313] Re: closing laptop lid while connected to an external display does not disable the laptop screen

2012-03-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
Relevant section of the multi-monitor specification:

"When the laptop lid is closed, the internal panel is disabled,
automatically setting the external monitor as the Primary display and
moving all windows from the internal panel across. A power-on signal is
also sent to the external display (through the H-sync and V-sync pins:
as specified in the VESA DPMS spec), to ensure that it is awake."

2012-03-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Craig, thanks for the dmesg.

Can I get you to collect one more thing?

Please collect 'xrandr --verbose' twice with the external monitor
connected, once with the lid open and again with it closed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 947704] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT - user switching

2012-03-06 Thread Noel Arzola
Hmm, connecting on another machine through ssh and running the trace
steps, if I try to switch users the computer goes to a black screen. It
kills the session I'm attempting to switch from and never loads the one
I'm attempting to switch to. Since it mostly happens when I'm switching
users this is a bit of a problem. Will continue to try to reproduce and
retrieve backtrace

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 947350] Re: Display wont go higher than 1024x768

2012-03-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
It could just be TV overscan. But the regression aspect is interesting.

Boot a 11.10 livecd, set to not mirrored, and then collect 'xrandr
--verbose' and add as an attachment to this bug report, for comparison
purposes. Also grab the /var/log/Xorg.0.log and attach that as well.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948234] Re: xorg intel driver returns less than 3fps in glxspheres test

2012-03-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Richard,

Unfortunately we don't yet support bumblebee or hybrid gfx switching at
all in Ubuntu.

If you can reproduce the issue with just -intel (i.e. turn off the
nvidia card in BIOS) loaded, feel free to reopen. Otherwise, I'd
suggest raising this with the bumblebee folks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 927155] Re: [snb-m-gt2+] Viewsonic VA2012w not correctly detected (Invalid EDID)

2012-03-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Alan,

I notice this is tagged 'regression'. Can you tell me when it first
started cropping up?

It would be useful to boot an earlier Ubuntu version from when it was
working properly, and collect the EDID (ala 'xrandr --verbose' or get-
edid from the read-edid package) for comparison. Booting a livecd
should be sufficient.

Is there any difference between plugging the monitor in with the system
booted, vs. plugging it in while off and then booting?

This doesn't look like an rc6 type of bug, but it is sandybridge
graphics. I think you may have filed this from before when that got
switched on. If not, you may as well try booting with it off and see if
it makes any difference.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/PowerManagementRC6

On the off chance it's a video card hardware-specific problem, any
chance you can appropriate a different laptop or PC and see what EDID
it's able to get?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 943365] Re: Xorg freeze

2012-03-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
For GPU lockup bugs with Intel graphics, you need to collect the output
of 'dmesg' and your /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state file. Both
of these must be collected while the machine is locked up (e.g. by
sshing into the sick machine over ethernet). See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze for additional info.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 938653] Re: [snb-m-gt2] applications fail to redraw

2012-03-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
Well, you have a sandybridge card, which suggests testing turning off
rc6. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/PowerManagementRC6.

Aside from that, since you know that it happened on a specific day
(2/21), that suggests downgrading to the versions of the packages you'd
had installed before, that I mentioned in comment #2. However those are
tough packages to downgrade, so I wouldn't recommend trying it unless
you have plenty of time and fortitude. I did scan through the
changelogs for those and didn't see anything that struck me as relevant
but who knows.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 946729] Re: Graphical Lockup Defect during normal use

2012-03-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Benjamin,

For linux kernel GPU lockup bugs with Intel graphics, you need to
collect the output of 'dmesg' and your
/sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state file. Both of these must be
collected while the machine is locked up (e.g. by sshing into the sick
machine over ethernet). See

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 753144] Re: focused, or maximized windows blank

2012-03-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
We're up to 290.20 in Precise, which should resolve this bug.

For oneiric you should be able to get the updated driver via Jockey.
For other older releases you can get it via PPAs or download from the
NVIDIA site, but we can't do SRUs of proprietary drivers to those
releases.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 905686] Re: nautilus assert failure: nautilus: ../../src/xcb_io.c:528: _XAllocID: Assertion `ret != inval_id' failed.

2012-03-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
XCB is a single-threaded protocol, and when called from a multi-threaded
client application, that client needs to take care that its calls are
properly thread-safe. Otherwise, it can trip assertions in the XCB
code.

Which would mean this is not really a *bug* in xcb (any more than a
syntax error would be a bug in gcc), but that xcb is catching a bug in
the client application. Indeed, the assertion error text from xcb spell
out the threading issue (or other similar issues commonly hit in code
calling xcb_io.c functionality.)

However, lots of code is MT and xcb is just too fragile, and the error
text makes it look like the crash was in X so these issues tend to get
filed against X components rather than investigated as client bugs. But
I don't have a good idea what should be done on the X side. We're aware
of some upstream work investigating these locking problems:

I double checked and turning "Sync to VBlank" off does solve the leak. I
will check again tonight with "Sync to VBlank" enabled and every program
that redraws minimised or shut down.

2012-03-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
As per my previous message, these types of errors are generally client
problems.

This past week apport got a fix for an xcb threading assert it hits;
possibly this issue is resolved by that.

situation then? I remember reading on phoronix (
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=OTg0Mg ) that large
chunks of code were being deleted, is this the case with r200? Or is it
possible for the user just to tweak some setting and recompile?

A follow up article on phoronix (
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTAxMDE ) mentions
the possibility of a mesa-old-dri-drivers package. Do you know if this
is going to be implemented? I can't find it, but I'm generally rubbish
at finding packages! It would be a nicer workaround than downloading
the 7.11 versions directly from launchpad.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 947833] Re: When copying selection to clipboard in LibreOffice Calc 'X' process begining to eat 100% cpu

2012-03-06 Thread Alexander
Hm... I see that you're using other version of nvidia drivers than I do. Maybe
the problem is in nvidia drivers?
I can't test it right now (the problem is on another computer), maybe from
begining of next week...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948389] [NEW] Touchpad stops working after using the keyboard (including function keys)

2012-03-06 Thread Rainer Rohde
Public bug reported:

I'd like to post this as a new bug since for some reason there's no
movement (bug #938039) and the bug is really affecting my productivity
at work.

Again, when adjusting the keyboard backlight by pressing F5 on the
keyboard a few times the touchpad is effectively 'dead'. I can replicate
this every time.

Needless to say, my standard USB mouse works just fine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 943836] Re: Xorg freeze

2012-03-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
The screen corruption issue is a known regression in unity-greeter.

Are you using the default screensaver (that just shows a blank screen
and clock), or xscreensaver, or something else?

None of your logs show an error; could you reproduce the fault, attach
gdb to the Xorg process, and collect a backtrace? That may indicate
where X is stuck. See http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for
guidance.

Sometimes these types of bugs are caused by compiz plugins. Can you
reproduce this when using unity-2d?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 940564] Re: nvidia-graphics-drivers (295.20-0ubuntu1), is causing failed restarts & shutdowns

2012-03-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

It's possible that this is an extreme corner case, (my hardware), 8400m
chipsets in general or a bit more widespread.
So i'm opening this report in case it's one of the latter 2

  It occurs like this:
After the install or upgrading to the .20 drivers shutdowns/restarts works as
expected.
This lasts for at least 3 normal uses of either, by normal I mean boot up,
use the session a bit, then do a shutdown or restart.

Somewhere between the 4 - 8 attepmt either a shutdown or restart fails to
complete properly.
- Once this occurs it then continues for all subsequent attempts, there may be
an occasional exception to that, if needed I can relay, in any event the
respite is only temporary, basically a reset of the above
+ Once this occurs it then continues for all subsequent attempts, there may be
an occasional exception to that, if needed I can relay, in any event the
respite is only temporary, basically a reset of the above

- What happens is this -
+ What happens is this -
My normal shut down or restart takes about 2.5 sec's, after clicking either
the restart or shutdown button there is a screen flash, then a plymouth splash
for 2 sec's, then the machine either shuts down or restarts as normal.

When it fails - as soon as the button is clicked the display is immediately
shut off, there is harddrive activity for about 2 sec's, then nothing else.
The machine remains powered on, the harddrive stays spinning, all else is
like it was shutdown. Recovery is only possible holding the power button down
for 10 sec's to affect a forced power off

Have tested completly here with multiple installs, both from A2 upgraded
& any number of installs from the dailies, same exact thing.

Meanwhile this never occurs with the .10 driver, which baring this just
'going away' will be the one I'll use, now & come release

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948324] [NEW] Xorg loads omapfb module, then unloads it and uses fbdev instead (beagleboard-xm)

2012-03-06 Thread asohangh
Public bug reported:

This occurs after installing xserver-xorg-video-omap3 on a BeagleBoard-
xM running 12.04 Beta 1+updates. Xorg seems to detect and try to load
the omapfb driver, unloads it without specifying any error codes, and
then proceeds to use fbdev

It looks like it loads/unloads omapfb several times sometimes specifying that
it was already loaded:
(II) Failed to load module "omapfb" (already loaded, -1197656048)

At some point it tells me the following:
[ 4297.213] (II) omapfb: Driver for OMAP framebuffer (omapfb) and external LCD
controllers:
omap1/2/3, S1D13745, HWA742

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 uninstallable on Precise

2012-03-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
We do anticipate getting one more -nvidia release prior to Precise
shipping, and hope that will include an updated -173. Maybe we'll get
-96 too but hard to say; that appears to get attention less frequently,
so we might have to drop it.

In any case, I think we should wait on dropping these until closer to
final freeze, so we can see what NVIDIA puts out.

Is it possible for us to toggle off -173 and -96 from being shown in
jockey until we think it'll work? Might help quell some of the bug
reports we get.

Unfortunately the trace collected by apport here doesn't have useful

it may be worth having you collect a trace manually. See

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948234] Re: xorg intel driver returns less than 3fps in glxspheres test

2012-03-06 Thread RichardHDF
In retrospect I think it might be a problem with glxspheres. I installed
a opengl based game to see if the bad performance extends to that
(Billard-GL), but the game performs fine.

Is there any way I can run some tests to see what the source of the
problem is before I file the corrected bug report?

you should also report this to the maintainers of that driver.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 944331] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT - switching users

2012-03-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
Have you experienced any other Xorg crashes like this one, or was it
just the one time?

Unfortunately the trace collected by apport here doesn't have useful
information (truncated core?) If you can reproduce the crash reliably,
it may be worth having you collect a trace manually. See
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for directions.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 947704] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT - user switching

2012-03-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Noel,

Unfortunately no good stack trace was collected automatically for this
bug. We've had a few others of these SIGABRTs in the last week (bug
946576, bug 945556, bug 945963, bug 944331), all with truncated stack
traces like yours, but you appear to be the only one that gets the
crashes semi-reliably.

Would you mind collecting a full backtrace on this crash - see
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for guidance.
