[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-06-24 Thread Todor Chamurliyski
Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit
kernel 3.2.0-25-generic
graphics - NVidia

My laptop constantly freezes as it outputs the last sound produces for example
with no keyboard or mouse support. This is the 1st case when watching movie
with VLC and opening images or browser in the background. The second one occurs
while browsing and watching flash video on YouTube - the machine feels like
working except the display goes black with green horizontal lines with a small
quadrat in the bottom right side of the screen.
In those 2 cases only hard restart helps problem to get solved.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-06-24 Thread milton hagler
Are other Ubuntu flavors also being impacted? How about Kubuntu, Pinguy
and other desktops such as LXDE, XFCE. Perhaps this can help narrow the
problem down. I've experienced the hanging problem apparently randomly
and without USB devices attached. It seems to happen most when I'm using
Firefox 13.0. The mouse cursor still moves but no keyboard and cannot
click on anything. Also I've had the windows title bar disappear
repeatedly. Sometimes I can make it recover, but usually not and more
recently when I do a Unity reset (unity --reset) thes script hangs and
never finishes executing when it used to work. When I crash the script
the system locks up and I have to hard reboot to recover.

Confirmed - it also affects me
Medium - although it's a problem with an essential component (video card) that
would be 'high' since it only slows it rather than kills it, it seems more
appropriate to be medium.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1013801] [NEW] Ubuntu does not always load completely

2012-06-24 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

This problem very often happens when turning on the computer. Desktop and
icons appear on the screen but nothing can be accessed_ Mozilla does not
respond, nor does Firefox or any other application. I then need restart Ubuntu
on safe mode, run dpkg, then once more reload ubuntu the normal way and only
then does Wicd asks me for my password. After that, I can run every application
installed.
I have not yet figured out why this happens nor have I found the way to fix it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1007765] Re: brightness adjusting crashes system

2012-06-24 Thread Elco
Alright, I installed the -all, image-amd64 and headers-amd64 from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.4-precise/ (if I
understand correctly, 3.4 the latest stable release of the kernel for
precise).

Unfortunately it did not work. The 3.4 kernel was succesfully installed
(I guess, since Grub detected it, and I could boot the 3.4 option in
Grub, and uname -a reported version 3.4), but Unity 3D didn't start, so
Ubuntu fell back to Unity 2D and adjusting the brightness settings still
crashed the system (though the screen animation was now slightly
different then from the video). Also, all drivers installed using Jockey
were disabled and refused to reinstall (including AMD/ATI graphics
drivers). Strangely, when I originally installed Ubuntu, Unity 3D
worked out of the box with the opensource drivers, but now it fell back
to Unity 2D.

Luckely, I could still select the 3.2 kernel in Grub and there Unity 3D
still worked fine (except the brightess-crash-problem still occured). I
uninstalled the 3.4 kernel files and ran update-grub2 (since that was
recommended).

I've just encountered this on my Quantul box; it lost the xserver-xorg-
video-radeon driver (see separate bugs) - so it seems to be doing it
with the FB driver it's dropped back to.

xserver-xorg-core 2:1.12.1.902-1ubuntu1

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-06-24 Thread Steve Riley
@milton (#318): Yes, the freeze happens in other flavors. I'm running
Kubuntu and it happens on my T520.

Since you can move your mouse cursor, your problem is a different one
than the complete freeze reported here (and also in bug 10).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-06-24 Thread pureblood
Provided that it is likely that people in this forum are affected by different
bugs, I will share my own experience. I have been using in the last weeks
kernel 3.4.1 (available at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/) on a
Dell Vostro V131 with Sandy Bridge and HD 3000. With the following default
kernel parameters (/etc/default/grub):
1) quiet splash pcie_aspm=force i915.i915_enable_rc6=1
the system hangs (no mouse movements, no SysRq, no shh) within ~12 hours of
operation. Changing to:
2) quiet splash pcie_aspm=force i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.i915_enable_fbc=0
the system hangs within ~12 hours of operation. Changing to:
3) quiet splash pcie_aspm=force i915.i915_enable_rc6=0 i915.i915_enable_fbc=0
The system does not hang anymore even after several days of operation. It does
seem like the combination of i915.i915_enable_rc6=0 and i915.i915_enable_fbc=0
completely fixes the issue for me.

Here is the current output of for file in /sys/module/i915/parameters/*; do
echo -en $file\t; sudo cat $file; done:
/sys/module/i915/parameters/enable_hangcheckY
/sys/module/i915/parameters/fbpercrtc 0
/sys/module/i915/parameters/i915_enable_fbc 0
/sys/module/i915/parameters/i915_enable_ppgtt -1
/sys/module/i915/parameters/i915_enable_rc6 0
/sys/module/i915/parameters/lvds_downclock 0
/sys/module/i915/parameters/lvds_use_ssc-1
/sys/module/i915/parameters/modeset -1
/sys/module/i915/parameters/panel_ignore_lid0
/sys/module/i915/parameters/powersave 1
/sys/module/i915/parameters/reset Y
/sys/module/i915/parameters/semaphores -1
/sys/module/i915/parameters/vbt_sdvo_panel_type -1
It seems a plausible explanation is that there is something from the i915
driver triggering a GPU hang not correctly resolved. Could it be that this has
to do with overheating and so it cannot be boiled down to a specific piece of
code? I would be curios to see and hear if other people get it fixed with the
same kernel parameters.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1017253] [NEW] Middle button is not assigned to two-finger tap by default

2012-06-24 Thread Munchkinguy
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.04

As described here (http://askubuntu.com/questions/126920/how-to-assign-
middle-mouse-click-to-two-finger-tap) the middle button is not assigned
to the two-finger tap on a multitouch pad by default. The method for
correcting this is user-unfriendly.

** Affects: xinput (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1017233] Re: package fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu6 failed to install/upgrade: fglrx kernel module failed to build

2012-06-24 Thread Dave Lentz
Kapil: you are trying to run a 3.4 kernel using the old fglrx package included
with Lucid. That will not work (because fglrx needs patched to work with 3.4
kernel).
If you want to manually build Catalyst for 3.4 kernel, see:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1969827
(Of course, you will need to change 'Ubuntu/precise' to 'Ubuntu/lucid'

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 946311]

2012-06-24 Thread Jesse Barnes
Sorry this is taking so long, Oleksij. I wish I could reproduce it.

With the current drm-intel-next, do you see both outputs in xrandr even
with the VGA plugged in at boot? Or does it still not enumerate at all
if VGA is plugged in?

If you use the vesa driver are you able to get both displays going even
with the VGA plugged in at boot?

2012-06-24 Thread Bryce Harrington
xdiagnose (2.5.1) precise-proposed; urgency=low

  * xdiagnose.udev: Disable GPU apport hook from being triggered by udev.
This should only be enabled during the development period. Apport is
disabled after release, but it appears the hook still gets triggered
under certain circumstances.
(LP: #1009971, #997470)
  * apport/source_xorg.py: Link to all technical support options, not just
to Ask Ubuntu. Reword recommendation to explain why technical support
should be used first. Add a 'referred-by-support' tag so we can give
those bugs priority attention. Provide an option to just file the bug.

2012-06-24 Thread Bryce Harrington
#1009971 / #997470 was validated several days ago and is pretty critical
for us to get out, but this SRU is blocked due to no one having
validated this one (#991602). I'm actually surprised there's been no
comment at all one way or the other.

If no one can validate this fix ASAP, I'll split out the validated fix
to its own SRU and get that one in at least.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1003924] Re: HD Streaming Does Not Work in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

2012-06-24 Thread Hugh Holt
apport information

** Description changed:

Streaming of high definition audio/video does not work in Ubuntu 12.04
LTS. It worked fine in Ubuntu 11.10 and 11.04.

I am using the HDHomeRun Prime HDTV tuner, (with application HDHomeRun
Config GUI), which was able to stream HDTV to my computer perfectly in
  Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.10. A computer I have that still has 11.10
  installed still works perfectly.

After upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, the HDTV streaming no longer
functions. Audio breaks up and is unintelligible, and video stutters.
This problem exists on three different computers running 12.04 LTS, so
it is not isolated to a particular computer hardware issue.

Switching to a standard definition (SD) stream, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS works
  fine.

It appears that for some reason 12.04 LTS is not able to handle the
higher bitrate of HD streaming. I have seen similar error reports using
  other applications and hardware.

It would be helpful to track down and fix the bug because it is likely to
affect more users as 12.04 LTS gains wider use. Thanks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1017348] [NEW] Intel GPU hung and screen freeze when testing an OpenGL program

2012-06-24 Thread Deepak Subramanian
Public bug reported:

I am doing some graphics development in Ubuntu 12.04 and I came across
this bug today. I am just drawing a simple open gl program for drawing
a quadrilateral. There are no issues when I am running the same program
in different machine which uses an ATI radeon graphics card.

I am using Ubuntu 12.04

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1013171] Re: Many package hooks not ported to python3

2012-06-24 Thread Edward Donovan
That was fast work from everyone, yeah. :)

It's possible there may be some more apport hooks that need looking at.
I built up the list of affected packages, from the error logs of three
users, including me. That probably got us the most commonly installed
packages. But as far as I know, we haven't checked every package in the
archive. (If some automated testing is taking care of that, great!)
I've got a list, from the Contents file for Quantal, of all packages
that have files under apport/package-hooks. I'll try to post the list
of packages that don't seem to be tested yet. And, possibly, install
and test as many as I can. I guess I can't predict how soon I'll be
able to get to that, so we'll see. Thanks.

@Martin: Thank you. I made my email visible on Launchpad, and now (I
think) I get the difference in print usage.
