[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1018241] [NEW] Kernel panic with ppp and keyspan usa-19hs
You have been subscribed to a public bug: I am trying to use Kubuntu 12.04 i386 to connect to an ISP through dial-up. The ppp module is included in the distribution. I have a Keyspan USA-19HS USB-to-Serial adapter connected to a US Robotics 56k modem. The /etc/ppp/options file includes these three options: demand persist idle 60 Ppp connects to the ISP as expected and the remote host can be pinged. When the connection has been idle for 60 seconds, ppp attempts to close the USB device /dev/ttyUSB0 and a kernel panic occurs. Disconnecting the USB device before the timeout occurs causes pppd to terminate cleanly, but that defeats the persist option. Attached is a screen shot of kernel stack trace. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1016267] Re: 0458:003a USB mouse stops working after unplug/replug
I'm changing this back to confirmed, because I've provided all the information I _can_ provide, and otherwise this would just expire. How the importance can be medium when you are forced to reboot almost every time you unplug the mouse, is beyond me. By the way this has been happening very, very often lately, and I hadn't ever experience it at all until recently, so I suspect this is some regression. Actually it _may_ be related to suspend/resume. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 999645] Re: Freeze with unity 3d (12.04)
I am experiencing the same kind of freeze on ubuntu 12.04 using either unity 3d or gnome shell. It is a radomly freeze. The screen completly freeze, but the mouse still mouve. After this freeze occured, every applications still run (music ... etc). Sometimes, after severals seconds, compiz restart automaticly (the crash has been detected and an automatic report has been sent). But most of times, I need to restart the X server using the comand (ALT + Impr + K). After that the system remains a litlle bit unstable and I often need to reboot. This crash appears frequently when I start to use the dash, when I am playing video on the wed (firefox) and perhaps when I am using some applications such as minitube, musique (need QT library) and clementine... [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 991399] Re: laptop touchpad vertical scrolling doesn't work in abiword
Sorry if I did something I wasn't allowed to do. I'm not a developer, I just thought it was not a touchpad specific problem because: 1) the problem occurs not only with the touchpad but also with the mouse scrollwheel, as noted here and in bug #960089 (which I marked as a duplicate of this bug). 2) indeed, you can scroll the page, either with the touchpad or with the mouse, but only if you go with the pointer to the right edge of the page (causing the overlay-scrollbar to appear) and keep the pointer close enough to that edge (by close enough I mean within the horizontal space virtually occupied by the overlay-scrollbar). Then, you can even go up and down with the pointer and still scroll the page, the only two conditions are: the overlay scrollbar is visible (activated); the pointer does not cross the vertical line virtually drawn by the left edge of the overlay-scrollbar. I think this is enough to tell that it's not a driver problem. But, again, I'm not a developer, and this is the best i can do to help fix the bug. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1007765] Re: brightness adjusting crashes system
I retested the Ubuntu 12.10 daily live version today, and unfortunately the bug does still exist in kernel 3.5. I'm not sure if I tested it wrong the first time (it seems to matter how fast you try to increase or decrease the brightness) or if this is a regression. The screen doesn't show the behaviour in the video any more though (the weird colors), now it just hangs. Switching to CLI (CTR-ALT-F1) is not possible. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1007765 Title: brightness adjusting crashes system To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1007765/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1017377] Re: no GUI after update to 12.04
Whoa, just a high handed minute, there. I never said it was an X bug, I picked X because that wretched robot wanted me to pick something, and I followed the advice it pointed to on the Wiki. I had a perfectly good 10.04 system, ran the automatic update, and it is now broken.I regard that as a perfectly valid bug, probably in the update although there isn't a specific category for the update, only for the software used to do the update. If you don't think X is the correct component, what do you suppose is? And I don't think that suggesting a fresh install is anything other than a symptom of despair. How about a few suggestions about what MIGHT be wrong with my configuration ? How about the fact that I created a new configuration from /etc/skel? How about all the other people on the bulletin board with the same problem, who all needed to do a clean install? I rather thought that the idea of reporting a bug was because people wanted to hear about them, not to be airly dismissed with the suggestion of a clean install when that was /exactly/ what the upgrade process was supposed to avoid. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1017377 Title: no GUI after update to 12.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1017377/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 987933] Re: 10de:0407 Ubuntu 12.04 shutdown hangs with proprietary nVidia driver
I marked this as affecting me a while back, and subscribed. However, my setup, as a couple of others, is an AMD radeon card with the propietary driver. Same result. I see this bug has been marked nvidia only. If this is a deliberate decision to look at the bugs separately then I'll unsubscribe. However, this does seems to affect a lot of Dell users, like me. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1016267] Re: 0458:003a USB mouse stops working after unplug/replug
Now this is strange: mouse had stop working. After that, I didn't reboot, nor suspend/resume. I had unplugged and replugged the mouse a few times without luck (as usual). Then I replugged it once more after a long time unplugged, and it started working again. The only thing that seems to have some strong statistical correlation with this (though I can't get the exact pattern) is unplugging and plugging the POWER adapter. When mouse stops working it's always after having disconnected and reconnected power. And this time that it has started working again has also been after disconnecting and reconnecting power. However, it seems this bug is going to stay incomplete until it expires, so I guess I'm wasting my time. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1016267 Title: 0458:003a USB mouse stops working after unplug/replug To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1016267/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1018510] [NEW] apport hook tags too many bugs regression-update
Public bug reported: The stable release update team has subscribed to bug reports that are tagged either regression-proposed or regression-update and has noticed that quite a few bugs are tagged regression-update which should not be. The question in xdiagnose that leads to tagging bugs regression-update is a bit ambiguous: The problem began right after system software update This could mean either installing a package from -updates or happened after upgrading from one release to another. Due to the quantity of false positives the best thing seems to be just to remove the question. This should be SRU'ed for both Oneiric and Precise. ** Affects: xdiagnose (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: xdiagnose (Ubuntu Oneiric) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: xdiagnose (Ubuntu Precise) Importance: High Status: Fix Committed ** Also affects: xdiagnose (Ubuntu Oneiric) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: xdiagnose (Ubuntu Precise) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xdiagnose in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1018510 Title: apport hook tags too many bugs regression-update To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xdiagnose/+bug/1018510/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 953960] Re: Mouse scrolling works randomly with games using DGA for mouseinput
Thanks for fixing the bug, Marcin. :) For the rest of us: The most recent release of the X.Org server at the time of this writing, xorg-server-1.12.2.901, still has the bug. Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise) ships with X.org server 1.11.4, and the most recent tagged version on this branch, xorg-server-1.11.99.902, also has the bug. Unless the fix finds its way back into the X.Org server 1.11 branch, I wouldn't expect to see this bug fixed in Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise) at all. If the only way to fix this bug is to upgrade all of the X.Org packages to a newer branch (1.12 or beyond), then the Ubuntu maintainer who wanted such a change would have to justify why he needed to upgrade so many important packages at once. That's a tall order. Arguing for such a big change seems like it would be especially difficult because (a) 12.04 is an LTS release and (b) the problem doesn't cause severe problems in packages other than games. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/953960 Title: Mouse scrolling works randomly with games using DGA for mouseinput To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/953960/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1002542] Re: Xorg freeze within weeks, but within minutes after plugging external monitor.
** Description changed: - Used Precise for weeks, with external monitor sometimes plugged, everything ok. - (Small drawback: boot fails with external monitor attached. Another issue.) + After batch software update on 2011-05-21, X started to freeze (as + defined on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze ) within + minutes when running with an external monitor attached (desktop extends + on both laptop LCD and monitor via VGA output). - Today I applied system update. + In the meantime, I observed that the freeze also occurs without external + monitor attached but with a much higher delay, say a few times per + month. - Now, whenever I plug in external monitor, desktop extends correctly on it. - After a moment (minutes), the bug happens. + Per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze : - * Mouse pointer moves but... - * Clicking anywhere does nothing. - * *No* update anywhere on screen (e.g. no more CPU activity graph scrolling every second) - * Music from X client rhythmbox continues playing for about a minute or so then stops. - * Ctrl-Alt-F1 does not switch to text console - * Ssh into machine works. Killing some X clients does not change display. + Have you experienced just one lockup, or have you had a series of + these lockups? - One of the times, to get back control of the laptop screen, I had no choice but reboot. - The last time, killall Xorg succeeded (a new Xorg was launched by lightdm) and I'm using that session while typing this. + A series. - Bug happens reproductibly a while after external monitor plugged. - *Does not happen when external monitor is not plugged.* + If you've had several, how often does it occur? Every few + hours? Once or twice a day? Couple times a week? + + With external monitor, within minutes. + Without external monitor, within weeks. + + When did you first notice it? + Shortly after upgrading? + After updating? + + 2012-05-21, hours after an upgrade, when plugging an external monitor + (had not done that for a week or a few weeks, but had definitely done + that in the past with 12.04 without this problem). + + After changing compositing (Desktop Effects) settings? + + No, compositing is disabled at all times. + + Under what conditions does it seem most likely to reproduce? (...) + When changing resolution or enabling/disabling monitors + + With external monitor, within minutes. + Without external monitor, within weeks. - # History - - * I'm not definitely sure that the bug was technically triggered by the update today, but - * the problem definitely never happened before today. - - * I applied software update on 13h14m. - * First bug occurrence at about 16h07m. - * Second bug occurrence at about 16h14m. - * Third bug occurrence at about 17h10m. - - (then used machine on battery without external screen until out of - energy) ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.04 Package: xorg 1:7.6+12ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.2.0-24.37-generic 3.2.14 Uname: Linux 3.2.0-24-generic x86_64 .tmp.unity.support.test.0: - + ApportVersion: 2.0.1-0ubuntu7 Architecture: amd64 CompizPlugins: [core, composite, opengl, compiztoolbox, decor, vpswitch, snap, mousepoll, resize, place, move, wall, grid, regex, imgpng, session, gnomecompat, animation, fade, workarounds, scale, expo, ezoom] CompositorRunning: None Date: Mon May 21 18:46:13 2012 DistUpgraded: Fresh install DistroCodename: precise DistroVariant: ubuntu ExtraDebuggingInterest: Yes, if not too technical GpuHangFrequency: Several times a day GpuHangReproducibility: Occurs more often under certain circumstances GpuHangStarted: Today GraphicsCard: - Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0116] (rev 09) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) -Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Big change? The patch is barely few lines. I don't think leaving gamers wait another 6 months with buggy non- working release in hands is any option (I've already waited for almost 4 months..). No wonder Linux doesn't succeed on desktop... I thought whole point of LTS was it gets bugfixes for years to come. Sigh... I don't wanna sound trollish but I'm just so frustrated with this bug. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 953960] Re: Mouse scrolling works randomly with games using DGA for mouseinput
No worries, Alexander: I'm on your side. :) I found your bug report because I, too, was unable to play my favorite games on my favorite operating system. While it's true that Marcin's patch is small, don't forget that it hasn't yet appeared in xorg-server-1.11.99.902 or xorg- server-1.12.2.901. This means that if some enterprising Ubuntu developer wanted to roll the fix into the X.Org server shipped with 12.04, it would be his responsibility to make sure that the change didn't break anything across any of the other 70 xserver-xorg-* packages. That alone is hard enough to do-- even trivial changes tend to expose bugs elsewhere. But even if the enterprising developer did all that work, he should expect his support from upstream to be minimal, given that he'd be integrating pieces that hadn't yet been signed off as ready to use. And woe be him if even one bug would appear elsewhere: he'd have people asking him why he introduced bugs into a stable LTS release. So in effect, when we ask a maintainer to integrate the mousewheel patch, we're asking them to take on 71 high-profile packages' worth of risk-- with the understanding that they will likely not receive any support-- on unreleased code that no one has yet had a chance to hammer on. Viewed from this angle, the developer would make better use of his time (and not risk his reputation) by waiting for Marcin's bugfix to be merged into an official release of the X.Org server upstream. Then, after the fix found its way into Debian testing, he could submit an SRU request (see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates ) to have the newer X.Org server (and perhaps its 70 related X.Org packages) packaged for Ubuntu 12.04. This is why I say it's unlikely we'll see this bug fixed in 12.04. We've got to wait for a new upstream release of the X.Org server that incorporates this change, then we've got to wait for Debian to accepting the new version into Debian testing, and then we've got to lobby a developer to submit an SRU request for the new version of X.Org.

I skipped the packages already fixed above, and those that were on my system, during the first round of breakage, and had no problems.
