Any updates on this? Original bugreport was filled almost 3 years ago.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1018241] [NEW] Kernel panic with ppp and keyspan usa-19hs

2012-06-27 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I am trying to use Kubuntu 12.04 i386 to connect to an ISP through dial-up.
The ppp module is included in the distribution. I have a Keyspan USA-19HS
USB-to-Serial adapter connected to a US Robotics 56k modem.
The /etc/ppp/options file includes these three options:
  demand
  persist
  idle 60
Ppp connects to the ISP as expected and the remote host can be pinged.
When the connection has been idle for 60 seconds, ppp attempts to
close the USB device /dev/ttyUSB0 and a kernel panic occurs.

Disconnecting the USB device before the timeout occurs causes
pppd to terminate cleanly, but that defeats the persist option.

Attached is a screen shot of kernel stack trace.

ProblemType: Bug

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1016267] Re: 0458:003a USB mouse stops working after unplug/replug

2012-06-27 Thread matteo sisti sette
I'm changing this back to confirmed, because I've provided all the
information I _can_ provide, and otherwise this would just expire.

How the importance can be medium when you are forced to reboot almost
every time you unplug the mouse, is beyond me.

By the way this has been happening very, very often lately, and I hadn't
ever experience it at all until recently, so I suspect this is some
regression.

Actually it _may_ be related to suspend/resume. When I unplug the mouse
and replug it and it doesn't work, I usually can't tell for sure whether
it's the first time I unplug/replug after a suspend/resume. It may be
the case

2012-06-27 Thread Joachim Jacob
Same issues here. I have a HP probook 6550b. Two days ago I did a fresh
install of Ubuntu 12.04. During the first day, nothing was unstable. The
problems seem to begin after I installed cairo-dock. I have disabled
cairo-dock, and since my system seem to run again stable. Perhaps this
helps for somebody else.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 999645] Re: Freeze with unity 3d (12.04)

2012-06-27 Thread jay-allemand
I am experiencing the same kind of freeze on ubuntu 12.04 using either unity 3d
or gnome shell. It is a radomly freeze. The screen completly freeze, but the
mouse still mouve. After this freeze occured, every applications still run
(music ... etc). Sometimes, after severals seconds, compiz restart automaticly
(the crash has been detected and an automatic report has been sent). But most
of times, I need to restart the X server using the comand (ALT + Impr + K).
After that the system remains a litlle bit unstable and I often need to reboot.
This crash appears frequently when I start to use the dash, when I am playing
video on the wed (firefox) and perhaps when I am using some applications such
as minitube, musique (need QT library) and clementine...

This freeze has never occured on ubuntu 11.10.

I now activated the proposed updates : the bug still occured but most
rarely (only using the dash).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 991399] Re: laptop touchpad vertical scrolling doesn't work in abiword

2012-06-27 Thread dav2dev
Sorry if I did something I wasn't allowed to do.
I'm not a developer, I just thought it was not a touchpad specific problem
because:
1) the problem occurs not only with the touchpad but also with the mouse
scrollwheel, as noted here and in bug #960089 (which I marked as a duplicate of
this bug).
2) indeed, you can scroll the page, either with the touchpad or with the mouse,
but only if you go with the pointer to the right edge of the page (causing the
overlay-scrollbar to appear) and keep the pointer close enough to that edge (by
close enough I mean within the horizontal space virtually occupied by the
overlay-scrollbar). Then, you can even go up and down with the pointer and
still scroll the page, the only two conditions are: the overlay scrollbar is
visible (activated); the pointer does not cross the vertical line virtually
drawn by the left edge of the overlay-scrollbar.

I think this is enough to tell that it's not a driver problem. But, again, I'm
not a developer, and this is the best i can do to help fix the bug.
Cheers

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 906086]

2012-06-27 Thread Daniel-ffwll
It looks like the private slab works around foreign memory corruption
and for the remaining issues the reporter has gone awol. Also, I don't
quite see the evidence for why this is a regression.

Tentatively closing, please reopen if this is still an issue on latest

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-06-27 Thread Hessian DeJesus
Kevin LeBlanc, I have a very similar Machine, Dell D610, I915 Chipset, 1
Gig Ram, 80 Gig HDD. I was about to format and go back to vista or 7. I
will try your excellent detailed instructions and report back. My
freezes seem to only occur with FF 13 open and when I press the super
key, or dash home button. I am running a totally up to date clean
install of 12.04 32 bit. My temps are good (range from 40-55 C). Odd
thing is does not always happen, but when it does the KB is totally
locked, there is no flashin disk activity light, the USB and touchpad
are able to move the mouse but I can not get any of the click button to
do anything. I am running 3.2.0-25-generic-pae. I closely watch system
monitor and never go above 50% usage Memory and 20% usage of my 1 GIG
swap partition. Peace

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 946677] Re: UMS dri support missing for r200

2012-06-27 Thread ojordan
Hi Tormod and Bryce, thanks for the interest in this. Sorry I've been a
bit long getting back to you about this - I don't check this email
address often enough!!

I don't know if I can help much with the details of the mesa-legacy
package setup, but I am always up for testing stuff. Is it something
planned for 12.10 onwards or can it be installed in 12.04? I've found
your ppa https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/mesa-
legacy/+packages . I'm afraid how the various graphics drivers work and
fit together is a bit beyond me at the moment.

I only really use opengl stuff for desktop effects and I've been a bit
down about how to get something decent in 12.04 onwards. Kwin has been
crashing when I unminimise windows (
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=657596 ) and compiz (even
compiling the latest stable version) has been a bit crashtastic.
Suddenly yesterday I noticed that kwin nolonger is crashing and has been
rock solid. I'm over the moon about it. I have no idea what has fixed
it, but I am intent on finding out!

Let me know if I can be of any help with the mesa-legacy package(s).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-06-27 Thread Kevin LeBlanc
Hessian:

It's my pleasure, friend. It was quite accidental, since I was planning
on having this be a portable studio and the only distro/remix which JACK
will work with is KXStudio, and only the current version has a low
latency and a realtime kernel. As it turned out, the low latency kernel
cured the problem.

Everyone please, try this and let people know if this works for you.

Be well!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-06-27 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
I found this bug report today while researching the possibility of
trying out Ubuntu again after leaving it a long time ago, and noticed
the Won't Fix status. Unbelievable! I thought this was supposed to be
an LTS release?

The reasons why I stopped using Ubuntu have started coming back to me. I
guess getting the developers to take ownership of problems is still an
exercise in futility just like it used to be. I'll take another look
when 12.10 comes out.

2012-06-27 Thread Joris V.
Anybody who tried repro in a VM? I was wondering about this.

Ever since the problem, I moved to Fedora, which runs stable, but I
prefer Ubuntu's look feel... :/

Did anyone already try reproducing the error in a VM / fixing it by
updating the VM's kernel?

I'll try it anyway one of these days...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1007765] Re: brightness adjusting crashes system

2012-06-27 Thread Elco
I retested the Ubuntu 12.10 daily live version today, and unfortunately
the bug does still exist in kernel 3.5. I'm not sure if I tested it
wrong the first time (it seems to matter how fast you try to increase or
decrease the brightness) or if this is a regression. The screen doesn't
show the behaviour in the video any more though (the weird colors), now
it just hangs. Switching to CLI (CTR-ALT-F1) is not possible.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1017377] Re: no GUI after update to 12.04

2012-06-27 Thread Bob Harvey
Whoa, just a high handed minute, there.

I never said it was an X bug, I picked X because that wretched robot
wanted me to pick something, and I followed the advice it pointed to on
the Wiki.

I had a perfectly good 10.04 system, ran the automatic update, and it is
now broken.I regard that as a perfectly valid bug, probably in the
update although there isn't a specific category for the update, only for
the software used to do the update. If you don't think X is the correct
component, what do you suppose is?

And I don't think that suggesting a fresh install is anything other than
a symptom of despair. How about a few suggestions about what MIGHT be
wrong with my configuration ? How about the fact that I created a new
configuration from /etc/skel?

How about all the other people on the bulletin board with the same
problem, who all needed to do a clean install?

I rather thought that the idea of reporting a bug was because people
wanted to hear about them, not to be airly dismissed with the suggestion
of a clean install when that was /exactly/ what the upgrade process was
supposed to avoid.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 987933] Re: 10de:0407 Ubuntu 12.04 shutdown hangs with proprietary nVidia driver

2012-06-27 Thread Neil C Smith
I marked this as affecting me a while back, and subscribed. However, my
setup, as a couple of others, is an AMD radeon card with the propietary
driver. Same result. I see this bug has been marked nvidia only. If
this is a deliberate decision to look at the bugs separately then I'll
unsubscribe. However, this does seems to affect a lot of Dell users,
like me. Could this be a Dell issue or an issue with proprietary
graphics drivers and the kernel, rather than specific to nvidia?

I added apport data and some debug information there.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1017377] Re: no GUI after update to 12.04

Xorg don't want this one.
I can't find a 'package' for the process of doing a distribution upgrade, so
this is my next best guess.

I rather think that having to know the name of a package before
searching for it in launchpad is counter-intuitive, by the way!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1015183] Re: Inconsistent mouse events for Acer T231H multitouch monitor

2012-06-27 Thread Martin von Gagern
I have a patch for the second issue of the mouse state during replay.
Will attach it here shortly. I'm currently trying to get this to my PPA,
for quantal first and for precise afterwards.

Editing the change log, I found that the removal of the TOUCH_END is not
part of the orig tarball, but comes from an ubuntu patch,
507_touchscreen_fixes.patch. The changelog entry by Chase Douglas quotes
bug #974887 as a reference on those modifications.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1016267] Re: 0458:003a USB mouse stops working after unplug/replug

2012-06-27 Thread matteo sisti sette
Now this is strange:

mouse had stop working.
After that, I didn't reboot, nor suspend/resume. I had unplugged and replugged
the mouse a few times without luck (as usual). Then I replugged it once more
after a long time unplugged, and it started working again.

The only thing that seems to have some strong statistical correlation
with this (though I can't get the exact pattern) is unplugging and
plugging the POWER adapter.

When mouse stops working it's always after having disconnected and
reconnected power. And this time that it has started working again has
also been after disconnecting and reconnecting power.

However, it seems this bug is going to stay incomplete until it
expires, so I guess I'm wasting my time.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1016771] Re: Xorg freeze

2012-06-27 Thread Computer User
Ubuntu completely freezes if I install the graphics driver the
additional drivers application recommends.

 Nvidia accelerated graphics driver.

Sometimes Ubuntu is not completely frozen and it will only allow me to
left click on the desktop to access the display settings, then system
settings, then the additional drivers application to uninstall the
graphics driver.

 Then Ubuntu functions normally again.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1009971] Re: apport-gpu-error-intel.py pop-up continuously

2012-06-27 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 997470 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/997470

This bug was fixed in the package xdiagnose - 2.5.1

---
xdiagnose (2.5.1) precise-proposed; urgency=low

  * xdiagnose.udev: Disable GPU apport hook from being triggered by udev.
This should only be enabled during the development period. Apport is
disabled after release, but it appears the hook still gets triggered
under certain circumstances.
(LP: #1009971, #997470)
  * apport/source_xorg.py: Link to all technical support options, not just
to Ask Ubuntu. Reword recommendation to explain why technical support
should be used first. Add a 'referred-by-support' tag so we can give
those bugs priority attention. Provide an option to just file the bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1018510] [NEW] apport hook tags too many bugs regression-update

2012-06-27 Thread Brian Murray
Public bug reported:

The stable release update team has subscribed to bug reports that are
tagged either regression-proposed or regression-update and has noticed
that quite a few bugs are tagged regression-update which should not be.

The question in xdiagnose that leads to tagging bugs regression-update
is a bit ambiguous:

The problem began right after system software update

This could mean either installing a package from -updates or happened
after upgrading from one release to another. Due to the quantity of
false positives the best thing seems to be just to remove the question.

This should be SRU'ed for both Oneiric and Precise.

the Xorg.0.log file is the same (apart from the times).

Fixed by just dropping the question.

This removes the feature for indicating possible regressions, so if
that's useful to anyone it'll need to be identified some other way.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1002542] Re: Xorg freeze minutes after plugging external monitor.

2012-06-27 Thread gouri
* Reproducible : within minutes with external monitor, within weeks
without external monitor

Confirmed this happens a few times per month, exactly as stated in
comment 2.

Thus, this is definitely not *specific* to dual-head setup, but happens
much more often in that case.

Let's see this positively as an opportunity to track down a bug with
chances to reproduce it within minutes rather than weeks.

* What next ?

Considering trying drivers from https://launchpad.net/~xorg-
edgers/+archive/ppa

Reading https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting

** Summary changed:

- Xorg freeze minutes after plugging external monitor.

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for the additional information.

This problem has been reported and Engineering is actively investigating
the issue. We aim to fix this for our upcoming 304.x driver in July, but
as you know schedules can change.

I have added myself to the bug report so I will be notified when this is
fixed, and I will notify you at that time.

So if it is acceptable with you, I will close this support case and will
inform you when the fix is available.

Best regards,

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 953960] Re: Mouse scrolling works randomly with games using DGA for mouseinput

2012-06-27 Thread Jargon Scott
Thanks for fixing the bug, Marcin. :)

For the rest of us:

The most recent release of the X.Org server at the time of this writing,
xorg-server-1.12.2.901, still has the bug. Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise) ships
with X.org server 1.11.4, and the most recent tagged version on this
branch, xorg-server-1.11.99.902, also has the bug.

Unless the fix finds its way back into the X.Org server 1.11 branch, I
wouldn't expect to see this bug fixed in Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise) at all.
If the only way to fix this bug is to upgrade all of the X.Org packages
to a newer branch (1.12 or beyond), then the Ubuntu maintainer who
wanted such a change would have to justify why he needed to upgrade so
many important packages at once. That's a tall order.

Arguing for such a big change seems like it would be especially
difficult because (a) 12.04 is an LTS release and (b) the problem
doesn't cause severe problems in packages other than games.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1002542] Re: Xorg freeze within weeks, but within minutes after plugging external monitor.

2012-06-27 Thread gouri
** Description changed:

- Used Precise for weeks, with external monitor sometimes plugged, everything
ok.
- (Small drawback: boot fails with external monitor attached. Another issue.)
+ After batch software update on 2011-05-21, X started to freeze (as
+ defined on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze ) within
+ minutes when running with an external monitor attached (desktop extends
+ on both laptop LCD and monitor via VGA output).

- Today I applied system update.
+ In the meantime, I observed that the freeze also occurs without external
+ monitor attached but with a much higher delay, say a few times per
+ month.

- Now, whenever I plug in external monitor, desktop extends correctly on it.
- After a moment (minutes), the bug happens.
+ Per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze :

- * Mouse pointer moves but...
- * Clicking anywhere does nothing.
- * *No* update anywhere on screen (e.g. no more CPU activity graph scrolling
every second)
- * Music from X client rhythmbox continues playing for about a minute or so
then stops.
- * Ctrl-Alt-F1 does not switch to text console
- * Ssh into machine works. Killing some X clients does not change display.
+ Have you experienced just one lockup, or have you had a series of
+ these lockups?

- One of the times, to get back control of the laptop screen, I had no choice
but reboot.
- The last time, killall Xorg succeeded (a new Xorg was launched by lightdm)
and I'm using that session while typing this.
+ A series.

- Bug happens reproductibly a while after external monitor plugged.
- *Does not happen when external monitor is not plugged.*
+ If you've had several, how often does it occur? Every few
+ hours? Once or twice a day? Couple times a week?
+
+ With external monitor, within minutes.
+ Without external monitor, within weeks.
+
+ When did you first notice it?
+ Shortly after upgrading?
+ After updating?
+
+ 2012-05-21, hours after an upgrade, when plugging an external monitor
+ (had not done that for a week or a few weeks, but had definitely done
+ that in the past with 12.04 without this problem).
+
+ After changing compositing (Desktop Effects) settings?
+
+ No, compositing is disabled at all times.
+
+ Under what conditions does it seem most likely to reproduce? (...)
+ When changing resolution or enabling/disabling monitors
+
+ With external monitor, within minutes.
+ Without external monitor, within weeks.

- # History
-
- * I'm not definitely sure that the bug was technically triggered by the
update today, but
- * the problem definitely never happened before today.
-
- * I applied software update on 13h14m.
- * First bug occurrence at about 16h07m.
- * Second bug occurrence at about 16h14m.
- * Third bug occurrence at about 17h10m.
-
- (then used machine on battery without external screen until out of
- energy)

The machine is running an nvidia optimus hardware, that is Intel + nVidia.
Bumblebee is installed on the machine, and works when used, but I don't use it.

As per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze

Problem: Freeze began after a system update

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 953960] Re: Mouse scrolling works randomly with games using DGA for mouseinput

2012-06-27 Thread Alexander
Big change? The patch is barely few lines.

I don't think leaving gamers wait another 6 months with buggy non-
working release in hands is any option (I've already waited for almost 4
months..). No wonder Linux doesn't succeed on desktop... I thought whole
point of LTS was it gets bugfixes for years to come. Sigh...

I don't wanna sound trollish but I'm just so frustrated with this bug.
Guess I'll just have to 'eat it' and go buy that Windows 7.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 953960] Re: Mouse scrolling works randomly with games using DGA for mouseinput

2012-06-27 Thread Jargon Scott
No worries, Alexander: I'm on your side. :) I found your bug report
because I, too, was unable to play my favorite games on my favorite
operating system.

While it's true that Marcin's patch is small, don't forget that it
hasn't yet appeared in xorg-server-1.11.99.902 or xorg-
server-1.12.2.901.

This means that if some enterprising Ubuntu developer wanted to roll the
fix into the X.Org server shipped with 12.04, it would be his
responsibility to make sure that the change didn't break anything across
any of the other 70 xserver-xorg-* packages. That alone is hard enough
to do-- even trivial changes tend to expose bugs elsewhere. But even if
the enterprising developer did all that work, he should expect his
support from upstream to be minimal, given that he'd be integrating
pieces that hadn't yet been signed off as ready to use. And woe be
him if even one bug would appear elsewhere: he'd have people asking him
why he introduced bugs into a stable LTS release.

So in effect, when we ask a maintainer to integrate the mousewheel
patch, we're asking them to take on 71 high-profile packages' worth of
risk-- with the understanding that they will likely not receive any
support-- on unreleased code that no one has yet had a chance to hammer
on.

Viewed from this angle, the developer would make better use of his time
(and not risk his reputation) by waiting for Marcin's bugfix to be
merged into an official release of the X.Org server upstream. Then,
after the fix found its way into Debian testing, he could submit an SRU
request (see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates ) to have the
newer X.Org server (and perhaps its 70 related X.Org packages) packaged
for Ubuntu 12.04.

This is why I say it's unlikely we'll see this bug fixed in 12.04.

We've got to wait for a new upstream release of the X.Org server that
incorporates this change, then we've got to wait for Debian to accepting
the new version into Debian testing, and then we've got to lobby a
developer to submit an SRU request for the new version of X.Org.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 987933] Re: 10de:0407 Ubuntu 12.04 shutdown hangs with proprietary nVidia driver

2012-06-27 Thread Gabe Gorelick
@Neil C Smith,

I marked this as an nvidia driver bug because a few users have reported
that the problem went away when using noveau, and I didn't see any other
cards or drivers mentioned on this bug report. But if the Catalyst
driver also has this problem then maybe it is a bigger issue. Do you
still experience the bug when using the open source radeon driver?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-06-27 Thread berend
I think also we have a list of different bugs here. I'm on a standard
Precise 32 bit: symptoms are lockup of X. Can ssh in from another
computer.

I followed one of the suggestions here to reset the Unity settings. Back
to default, and then simply re-entered the settings I would like to
have. System has been stable for a few hours now (usually it would
lockup every hour). Hopefully this helps someone.

2012-06-27 Thread hanynowsky
That is what I did, long last month. I thought at first that the upgrade
from Ubuntu kernel 23 to 24 fixed the freezes I used to have (Hard freezes
that requires hard reboot); but I actually I recall I rest Unity before
updating the kernel back then:

unity --reset compiz --replace sudo lightdm restart

My system is a Dell XSP 15 L502X AMD 64bits.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1013171] Re: Many package hooks not ported to python3

2012-06-27 Thread Edward Donovan
** Also affects: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Changed in: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu Quantal)
   Status: New = Confirmed

** Description changed:

Since the description here is the only post that can be updated, it
seems the best place to keep a changing list of packages that need
examining. (The original description was brief, and about only one
  package.)

We've fixed all the packages that found in the apt logs uploaded in the
first round of breakage. Now I've tried to review all the other apport
hooks I could find in Quantal. Working from the archive's Contents
file, I got the list of packages that have files under /usr/share/apport
/package-hooks . I skipped the packages already fixed above, and those
that were on my system, during the first round of breakage, and had no
problems. For the rest, I downloaded the debs, extracted the apport
hooks, and ran '2to3' on them. I've posted patches for every package
  that broke under python3.

  Thanks - Edward Donovan edward.dono...@numble.net

- These packages never broke, they just got warnings from the 2to3 tool:
+ These packages didn't break during the apport upgrade that forced a
+ recompile, but they get warnings from the 2to3 tool:

    compiz-core
    eclipse-platform
    gnome-control-center-data
    gnome-settings-daemon
    grub-common
    nautilus-data
    unity-common
    apache2.2-common

+ Now we have a bug report for at least gnome-control-center, bug 1018537,
+ which I've duped here. So these may need patching, too.
+
  Side note:

rss-glx: the python is fine, but the hook file is just named 'source',
with no package name or extension, so I filed bug 1017780 about that.
