@Damion All my tests were performed on Dell Vostro laptop with dual graphics (nVidia Geforce + Intel) and 2 displaylink devices. My aim is to get 4 screens: main (built in) + 1 on VGA output + 2 via displaylink. Under Win XP stuff works perfectly, screen layout in whatever configuration and depth of colors up to 32 bit. Therefore I believe there are no limitations coming from hardware. I want to reproduce quality and layout in Linux. As far as I know my laptop will not use VGA nor HDI output if using Intel graphics only, so I'd rather keep nVidia working. In openSuse I was using nouveau drivers for nvidia (open source), but also unable to get it working both with displaylink devices via framebuffer, but VGA output was also addressed via framebuffer, and displaylink screens stay green. From this I would conclude that kernel drivers are OK, system hardware parameters polling and reporting goes properly (checked via dmesg, udevadm, etc.) and only Xorg is unable to use this information. Might be intresting, that Ubuntu 12.04.1 with Unity displayed xlogin screen onto dispalylink without any prior xorg.conf modification. Unfortunately it happened only once, probably by accident and later I couldn't reproduce this effect, except manual edit of xorg.conf, however I switched from Unity to KDE in the meantime. Bryce, It is reproducible and happens every time I sleep/resume. It's similar to another bug I encountered a while ago in Oneiric and for a while in Natty Beta 1 where the background would disappear on sleep/resume but, if I left-clicked anywhere on the Dekstop, the image would reappear. Blacklisting radeon is a workaround. On 2012-09-14 I update to the latest packages, and my Ubuntu dual monitor using intell gfx is broken, it worked fine before the update. Now I can only get to work with one monitor. After doing testing with LP Bug #1051035 and LP Bug #1051020 I no longer see this issue with all packages updated as of 17-Sep 21:00 UTC and running Linux medic 3.6.0-030600rc6-generic #201209161835 SMP Sun Sep 16 22:36:28 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux. In a previous post i asserted that turning off gnome-screensaver stops these crashes from happening. This turns out not to be the case. Unfortunately, I am having trouble capturing an xtrace of the crash -- it almost seems as if xtrace itself somehow protects the driver from the crash! -- anyway, I'm finding that I can sometimes recover from the crash by switching to VT1 and running DISPLAY=:0 unity DISPLAY=:0 xtrace compiz --replace ~/trace.txt But usually I'll end up with some problems, like all window management being switched off so that it seems as though compiz isn't running at all. And sometimes this attempt at recovery will fail almost completely, in that I just end up with an unchanging image of my desktop wallpaper (sometimes the active windows will flash briefly when I switch to VT7, then disappear behind the wallpaper. I'm really not sure what the next steps in diagnosis are, htough I'll keep trying to capture an xtrace. This is on a Lenovo Thikpad T410, wiht intel graphics (of course) the i965 driver. Matt - How does one recover from the crash by switching to VT1? Attempting to invoke 'compiz --replace' afterwards would put the state right back where it was (frozen screen, etc.) and output error messages saying something similar to invalid configuration, this should never happen, you should probably raise a bug report about it. After killing Compiz again and invoking compiz --replace yet again I can get basic window management back (though unity --replace still does not work as it whines about unclean exit states). So one still needs to start over again to get it all functioning properly. Matt, was the battery on your ThinkPad not attached when you weren't able to reproduce the hang? When I was trying to get the hang to happen on my X200, I got about two days of hang-free Unity. When I attached the battery and continued trying, I got two hangs within three hours of each other. I sometimes have the AC power cord attached and sometimes not, but I haven't been keeping very careful track of that. I've certainly had the error appear when the AC power is unplugged, because I've had embarrassing moments showing up to meetings with a crashed computer (arrggh!). I'll experiment when I don't have 2 lectures to write for the morning!
