Arch Linux Intel HD Graphics 3000 KDE 4.9.2 MESA 9.0 The tearing seems to occur only in one area, about 1/5th of the way down the screen. It is as if the first 5th of the screen is updating slower. Downgrading Intel-DRI and libgl to 8.0.4 fixed the issue. Tried TearFree option in Xorg.conf and that gets rid of the tearing but makes the graphics unusably slow using KWin/OpenGL. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1070830] [NEW] arcs fail to be draw while top-level windows present
Public bug reported: A number of applications fail to draw arcs while high-level alerts and similar windows are present. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1070845] [NEW] xserver-xephyr became the default X server after upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10 from 12.04
Public bug reported: I've just upgraded my desktop from Ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10 (32 bit). Everything works fine till the lightdm login screen: after I gave my password nothing happened, and login screen was not responsive either. Switching back to text console, I noticed that several things (which usually run in a unity session) runs. But where? Then I had the odd idea that maybe it runs on the headless X server, xserver-xephyr or xvfb or so. Since only xserver-xephyr was installed, I removed that package. Stopping then starting lightdm service, after removing xserver-xephyr cured the problem. Now I am curious if it's worth to report or not, that it seems xserver-xephyr became the default X server somehow during the upgrade. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1046088] Re: No Brightness Control on ASUS G75VW Notbook (304.43)
Guys, I found the old bug #726692 (which had been even been filed by myself) which contains a fix at least for my hardware (which is not an Asus but a MacBook Pro, see comment #8). The fix for me is to add this line in xorg.conf: Option RegistryDwords EnableBrightnessControl=1 Then log out and in again, and it works for me. Sorry that I did not think of having filed this report before - I did not have to make this change for a long time. The fix is not my invention, but as I remember now has been frequently recommended since years ago: https://www.google.com/search?q=Option+%22RegistryDwords%22+%22EnableBrightnessControl%3D1%22+%22ubuntu%22 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-updates in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1046088 Title: No Brightness Control on ASUS G75VW Notbook (304.43) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1046088/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1070883] [NEW] Pivot causes missing single line on screen
Public bug reported: Description:Ubuntu 12.10 Release:12.10 fglrx-amdcccle-updates 2:9.000-0ubuntu3 fglrx-updates 2:9.000-0ubuntu3 When using pivot (rotated screen), a single line exactly in the middle of the screen is missing, which is especially noticeable with text. It's as if the driver tries to render the contents of the screen on a canvas which is 1px less wide than the screen, causing it to remove a single line. When you take a window, like the browser, and move it horizontally on the screen, this effect can be noticed very easily. The resolution is correct though, the screen is reported as DFP1 connected 900x1600+0+0 left by xrandr. It only occurs with fglrx, not with the open-source radeon driver. The cursor is not affected by this problem. I know that Ubuntu maintainers have no means to fix this (unless it's a misconfiguration), but maybe the maintainer can report this problem to AMD. Please note that ubuntu-bug fglrx-installer doesn't work so I've just attached the relevant log file. ** Affects: fglrx-installer (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: fglrx pivot ** Attachment added: Xorg.0.log https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1070883/+attachment/3411827/+files/Xorg.0.log -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1070883 Title: Pivot causes missing single line on screen To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1070883/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1070427] Re: fails to build due to missing kernel headers
Hi Martin, I redid an installation to try to determine what the deal is with installed packages. First, something that *may* be affecting behavior here. This system is behind a non-transparent proxy, so it is unable to access the internet without extra configuration. Also, notice that on this particular test I used a system different from the original reported one, and I'm cheating a bit, as it doesn't actually have an nvidia chipset. But the package *should* build correctly. I can repeat this if needed on the actual nvidia system (running some other tests on it but should be available in a few hours). But I expect the results would be the same. Here's what I did: 1- Installed Ubuntu 12.10 from a USB stick. This was a mostly default install. I did NOT click on the install 3rd party software checkbox. 2- Once the system booted I did dpkg --list, it's a largish list so I'll attach it as as file. I notice only a linux-headers-3.5.0-17 package is installed: $ grep linux-header packagelist.txt ii linux-headers-3.5.0-173.5.0-17.28 all Header files related to Linux kernel version 3.5.0 3- I configured the proxy for apt-get by adding this under /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/80proxy: Acquire::http::proxy my-super-secret-proxy; 4- I then did sudo apt-get update, and afterwards I *do* see a bit more information about linux headers: $ dpkg --list linux-header* Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold | Status=Not/Inst/Conf-files/Unpacked/halF-conf/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend |/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad) ||/ NameVersion Architecture Description +++-===--- un linux-headers none (no description available) un linux-headers-3 none (no description available) ii linux-headers-3.5.0-17 3.5.0-17.28 all Header files related to Linux kernel version 3.5.0 un linux-headers-generic none (no description available) Do notice that linux-headers-generic is *not* installed. 5- sudo apt-get install nvidia-current. Results in this (notice the linux-headers-generic wasn't listed as a package to install, and it fails to build the driver. $ sudo apt-get install nvidia-current Reading package lists... [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1043575] Re: Xubuntu 12.10 + Xorg server 1.13 = Window decoration missing
I can confirm this happens with Virtualbox guest drivers on (guest) Xubuntu 12.10, running on a host with Virtualbox 4.1.2, Xubuntu 11.10 with Nvidia graphics hardware (on which the Xfce glitch mentioned does not present... :-)) Deleting everything in $HOME/.cache *does not* fix this specific problem. Debian testing (Wheezy)'s version, 2:1.12.4-1, is unaffected by this on Intel graphics hardware *and* on a VirtualBox instance with identical guest graphics and host machine to the affected Xubuntu release. In the latter case, the fact that it works is almost certainly wholly due to Debian's revert of the upstream change introducing this regression as a fix for debbugs #688908. In short: Unaffected: Xubuntu 11.10 + xorg 2:1.10.4-1ubuntu4.3 + xfwm4 4.8.2-0ubuntu1 + nvidia-current 280.13-0ubuntu6.2 Affected: Xubuntu 12.10 + xorg 2:1.13.0-0ubuntu6 + xfwm4 4.10.0-2ubuntu1 + virtualbox-guest-x11 4.1.18-dfsg-1ubuntu1 Unaffected: Debian wheezy (testing current) + xorg 2:1.12.4-1 + xfwm4 4.8.3-2 + xserver-xorg-video-intel (2:2.19.0-6) Unaffected: Debian wheezy (testing current) + xorg 2:1.12.4-1 + xfwm4 4.8.3-2 + virtualbox-guest-x11 4.1.18-dfsg-1.1 Hopefully the Debian solution will be forwardported into Xubuntu at some point, or upstream will address it and we'll get the fix that way. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1043575 Title: Xubuntu 12.10 + Xorg server 1.13 = Window decoration missing To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xfwm4/+bug/1043575/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1069071] Re: Help
Thank you for using Ubuntu and taking the time to report a bug. Your report should contain, at a minimum, the following information so we can better find the source of the bug and work to resolve it. Submitting the bug about the proper source package is essential. For help see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . Additionally, in the report please include: 1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'cat /etc/lsb-release' or System - About Ubuntu. 2) The version of the package you are using, via 'dpkg -l PKGNAME | cat' or by checking in Synaptic. 3) What happened and what you expected to happen. The Ubuntu community has also created debugging procedures for a wide variety of packages at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures . Following the debugging instructions for the affected package will make your bug report much more complete. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1069625] Re: screen blanker activates after 10 mins of inactivity
Solved by simply switching to the X.Org X server Nouveau display driver. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068661] Re: 1002:6740 Unity does not load after installing fglrx-installer Radeon HD 6700M Series
hi! the workaround for this problem. it's some kind of strange bug. i have radeon hd 5670 and unity crashed for me too. 1. chceck if your card is still supported in ati closed driver for linux - they do not support 2xxx - 4xxx models in new drivers, so you need to install legacy drivers. 2 if that does not apply to you, do this: - switch back to open drivers - open terminal and do commands: sudo apt-get install linux-source sudo apt-get install linux-headers-3.5.0-17-generic - switch back to closed ati drivers in your software center / software sources / additional drivers - restart computer at this point everything should be working just fine. it worked for me. ati working at full speed with unity and it's so much faster. then open terminal and do this: sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic workaround found on polish ubuntu forums. thank you! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1068661 Title: 1002:6740 Unity does not load after installing fglrx-installer Radeon HD 6700M Series To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/fglrx/+bug/1068661/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068661] Re: 1002:6740 Unity does not load after installing fglrx-installer Radeon HD 6700M Series
Hi! Don't want to disappointing anyone but the solution provided by @pads doesn't work for everyone. 1) for legacy cards (2xxx-4xxx) does indeed work, but solution 2) only works for users with only a AMD/ATI GPU. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1070885] Re: fglrx doesn't work, my video card is radeon HD4850
AMD recently dropped the support for all pre-evergreen hardware (older than Radeon HD5000) from their Catalyst driver and the last version which supports this hardware is 12.6[1]. However, fglrx 12.6 doesn't support the X in Quantal. As AMD has stated that the legacy Linux driver will only receive critical updates it won't get support for the X used in Quantal. There's nothing we can do to get fglrx working for older hardware in Quantal - it's completely up to AMD whether they add support for newer X versions or not. Meanwhile you can keep using the open source drivers or move back to Precise if fglrx is required. *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1071036 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1071036 Public bug reported: ### I'm running Ubuntu-Studio 12.10 Quantal Qetzal after trying to install the proprietary ATI driver Catalyst control center from AMD's website for Linux 64 bit (x86) after reboot (resolution was lower and had black area about an inch all the way around the desktop. the fglrx-info didn't show the graphics card and the catalyst control center wouldn't load. so i had run apt-get install fglrx and fglrx-updates and tried reinstalling the proprietary ATI driver and it still didn't work. then i ran the ATI installer again but this time selected to build a .deb package for Ubuntu. It didn't work right off the bat so i had to do apt-get install for some dependencies. Then i ran the ATI installer again and tried to build the .deb packages and it worked. it made 3 .deb packages one fglrx-ubuntu, one fglrx-dev, and the .deb for the catalyst software. i tried to open the fglrx_8.970-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb with Ubuntu Software Center and upon opening it started trying to load it but it said some kind of thing like it didn't have the right stuff to install the package. so i closed the Software Center. Now every time i try to open the software center it opens the gui and the circular loading indicator looks like it's 1/4th full but it's not moving and then 1 second later it just closes (poof)... ps -ax shows no process for it after this happens. i've looked at the work around they had to use for 12.04 where that .py file on line 176 had some command that caused this same kind of thing... but they've since fixed this and my .py file didn't even have the lines at 176 that those workarounds were talking about. i tried removing software-center and reinstalling several different ways. each time i uninstalled / reinstalled it it still would automatically close after 1 second of the GUI popping up. so i'm not sure if it's not graphics driver related because my xorg.conf is setup with an aticonfig --initial setting but as i said earlier fglrx-info says no card is detected. now i'm trying to continue to install that fglrx_8.970-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb but it's having dependency issues saying that it does need fglrx-updates, but then when i install them it says that they are conflicting and cannot be removed and the .deb install process exits. so i was searching google for solutions and someone posted this command to clean out everything fglrx related. sudo apt-get autoremove --purge fglrx fglrx-updates now here's the bug... i've included the terminal window output. ubuntu studio caught this as a bug and prompted me to submit it and go to this website (i just created an account). i'm going to keep trying to install the fglrx_8.970-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb by running this command line: extalin@xtal-workstation:~$ sudo apt-get autoremove --purge fglrx fglrx-updates Reading package lists... [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 922733] Re: Inappropriate response to GFX card problem
Shortly after my original post, I reinstalled Ubuntu because I could not figure out how to remove the proprietary video driver that may have contributed to the problem. Indeed, I was then able to get my video display to work again. But, about 3 or 4 months ago I ran into a blink blank problem and posted a new bug that may be related to this one: Bug #1044885. I posted this comment on Bug #1044885: 1. My PC's mother board has an ATI Radeon graphics chip. It blinked and blanked only when it recognized the monitor as a Dell 17. It did not blank when it recognized the monitor as Unknown. This happened occasionally after an update/upgrade. When that happened, I resisted updates. But, Ubuntu was smarter and would upgrade spontaneously. 2. In the belief that I might have a h/w problem, I added a new grapcs card: Zotac Nvidia GeForce GTX. The blinky blank problem became more pronounced and my on-board graphics ceased to provide VGA output. 3. I have replaced my Dell 17 monitor by my wife's LG monitor which is recognized by Linux as a Goldstar Company Ltd 23, 1920 x 1080 dispaly (VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GT218 [GeForce 210] (rev a2)). The blinky blank problem is as bad as with the Dell 17 monitor. The problem is: - not the monitor - not the graphics hardware - not Ubuntu, as it seems I am the only person with this problem I am at a loss. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/922733 Title: Inappropriate response to GFX card problem To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/922733/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1071101] [NEW] nearly every other boot I get Low Graphics Mode message.
Public bug reported: I'm not entirely sure that this is xorg, I can't figure out which log file to look in to find out. The log files with likely names did not give me usefull info. I've seen similar errors, but never the same hardware or circumstanses. Behavior started immediatly after upgrade to 12.10 I'm running GNOME classic (though I think this bug is occuring before this becomes relevent), using an ATI HD4850 video card with open source drivers. About every other boot, I get a white message box telling me that something went wrong and the system will boot in low graphics mode. I'll try and write down the exact message next time this happens. The first time this happend (the next day after upgrading to 12.10, I was able to select the use defaults option to continue. every time after this, the use defaults or use latest backup goes right back to the same question. The only way forward is to boot into low graphics mode. I usually shut down the computer at the login screen when it is in low graphics mode (from the menu, not the switch), and turn the computer back on. This has booted cleanly with the correct graphics mode every time I have done it (about 4 times). The one time I tried sudo shutdown -r now, it rebooted and had the same problem again ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.10 Package: xorg 1:7.7+1ubuntu4 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.5.0-17.28-generic 3.5.5 Uname: Linux 3.5.0-17-generic x86_64 .tmp.unity.support.test.0: ApportVersion: 2.6.1-0ubuntu3 Architecture: amd64 CompizPlugins: [core, composite, opengl, compiztoolbox, decor, snap, expo, move, resize, scale, regex] CompositorRunning: None Date: Wed Oct 24 19:12:16 2012 DistUpgraded: 2012-10-21 15:14:45,536 DEBUG enabling apt cron job DistroCodename: quantal DistroVariant: ubuntu ExtraDebuggingInterest: Yes, if not too technical GraphicsCard: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV770 [Radeon HD 4850] [1002:9442] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Hightech Information System Ltd. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1065979] Re: external/internal monitors mirrored on boot when laptop lid is closed
No, it's not g-s-d, but X that is setting it to mirrored in this case. From the Xorg.0.log, after correctly detecting all the resolutions: [16.904] (II) intel(0): Using fuzzy aspect match for initial modes [16.904] (II) intel(0): Output LVDS1 using initial mode 1024x768 [16.904] (II) intel(0): Output VGA1 using initial mode 1024x768 This is the standard default behavior that X.org provides, so is not an X bug. Policy is handled at the gnome-settings-daemon layer, so g-s-d *should* be putting your monitors into the extended configuration by default as per the referenced multi-monitor design specification. X.org does not track power or lid open/closed status so probably couldn't make correct decisions anyway. Unfortunately a large amount of what's in the specification is the correct design yet simply hasn't been implemented, and that includes this use case. Thus I think this is probably best carried as a wishlist bug for gnome-settings-daemon. Theoretically we could simply hack X.org to do extended by default (this was experimented with briefly back when RANDR was first introduced). The problem arises that in certain circumstances (e.g. projectors), defaulting to extended can lead to confusing and undesired behaviors; in fact there was discussion at some point by the design team to make mirrored the default again, but I don't know the status on that. Anyway, if/when this does get implemented, it will probably be too invasive of a change to consider backporting, so the precise and quantal tasks will have to be wontfix. For raring, we have a defined focus for development which excludes development work for multimonitor, so I'll target this bug to S. ** Also affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu S-series) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu Quantal) Status: Confirmed = Won't Fix ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu Precise) Status: Confirmed = Won't Fix ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu Precise) Assignee: Bryce Harrington (bryce) = (unassigned) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1065979 Title: external/internal monitors mirrored on boot when laptop lid is closed To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/1065979/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
