2018-06-14 Thread Andreas Schildbach
I'm trying the bionic version of the proposed nux-tools
(4.0.8+18.04.20180613.5-0ubuntu1) and it works fine so far.

I cannot test this, because I moved to Utopic and Vivid. Both kernels
have the same problem. I think this test is as good as the one you're
proposing and the status of this ticket can be moved back to 'new'.

artifacts replacing characters in fonts) on the Lenovo T410s (Ubuntu

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1296224] [NEW] Horrible noise via DisplayPort [regression]

2014-03-23 Thread Andreas Schildbach
Public bug reported:

This issue has been present and fixed two years ago and with Trusty Tahr
it re-appeared:

When logging in and my display is extended to two monitors, and also
when the screen blanks, I get 3-5 seconds of horrible noise via
DisplayPort audio out.

The noise is loud enough to damage ears and loudspeakers, if volume has
been set to a normal listening level.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 969940] [NEW] When going into standby, DP monitor emits horrible noises via attached speakers

2012-03-31 Thread Andreas Schildbach
Public bug reported:

I am using a Thinkpad T410s with a Dell 2711 connected via DisplayPort.
Attached to the monitor, there is my speakers that I can use to listen
to music that is transmitted via DisplayPort (or HDMI). Starting with
Ubuntu 12.04, Ubuntu can transmit audio via DP.

However, when going into standby - either via inactivity timeout or via
closing the lid - I hear horrible sound garbage.

This is quite loud and can possibly damage speakers and/or ears,
depending on the sound level of whatever I heard before.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 447892] Re: [i855gm] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855

2010-05-08 Thread Andreas Schildbach
I can confirm that the workaround in comment #89 mostly works on an ASUS
M2400N. I could not boot with "acpi=off" as described in step 1, it
locked up with a black screen. I had to do a text-mode install instead.
After that, I continued from step 2 and everything went as described.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 432401] Re: [i915gm] Intel/KMS: Missing 1024 x 768 mode (regression from Jaunty)

2010-03-02 Thread Andreas Schildbach
@Chase:

Regarding 2) sometimes (very scarce) my BIOS is displayed on the
external monitor rather than the internal display. I think I used the
opportunity to have a look at my monitor overlay to verify the
resolution. I realize this is not very reliable, so if you really need
this information, please tell me how to verify it for sure.

At least I can say that 1024 x 768 was listed in 915resolution back when
this tool was still necessary.

3) I can switch between pixel-per-pixel and stretch in my notebook BIOS.
Right now, I am using pixel-by-pixel.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 432401] Re: Intel/KMS: Missing 1024 x 768 mode (regression from Jaunty)

2009-10-07 Thread Andreas Schildbach
I'm tagging this bug with 'ubuntu-boot-experience', because in my case
of dual monitors gdm is choosing an 800 x 600 mode rather than a 1024 x
768 mode, which looks very crude to my eyes. There are even GUI elements
of gdm that don't fit on the screen because if this.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 432401] [NEW] Intel/KMS: Missing 1024 x 768 mode (regression from Jaunty)

2009-09-18 Thread Andreas Schildbach
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

On a Dell Latitude X1 with on its internal display with a native
resolution of 1280 x 768, the second most important mode of 1024 x 768
is not detected:

$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 768, maximum 4096 x 4096
VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
LVDS1 connected 1280x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 264mm x
159mm
   1280x768 59.9*+
   800x60060.3
   640x48059.9
   0x0 0.0
TV1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

I consider this a bug, because 1024 x 768 is certainly supported by this
notebook (even the BIOS uses this mode). It was supported with Jaunty,
but stopped working somewhere when the switch over to KMS was made.

Installing the 'drm-next' kernel (see linked upstream issue) fixes the

Will these be applied for Karmic?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 352708] Re: [i915] dualscreen: some screen stays dark after suspend/resume via lid (KMS)

2009-07-21 Thread Andreas Schildbach
More debugging on karmic:

/etc/acpi/events/asus-wireless

is the event that is responsible. I looked into

/etc/acpi/asus-wireless.sh

and found that somewhere in toggleAllWirelessStates() the video
configuration is destroyed. This method is imported from /usr/share
/acpi-support/state-funcs

Thus, I am assigning this bug to acpi-support.

before lid close, everything works as expected. It looks acpid is
destroying the display configuration on lid close event.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 398183] Re: intel driver seems to have lost tv output quirk

2009-07-15 Thread Andreas Schildbach
Hello Bryce,

acually it does not cause any significant problems right now.

However, back then when the TVout quirks were collected and implemented,
it was the general consensus to not present the user any outputs that
are not existing.

That said, if it was decided to drop the TVout quirks altogether I
respect that decision and would withdraw this bugreport. If the quirks
are still there and just my hardware dropped from that list, I'd regard
this as a bug and would like to have my hardware re-added.

2009-07-14 Thread Andreas Schildbach
I believe that the process of 'destroying' the xrandr configuration is
happening actually before suspend. When I close the lid, I see the
screens switch resolutions to 800x600 just before they fade out and the
system starts to sleep.

2009-07-13 Thread Andreas Schildbach
I am very sorry to say that this bug has recently cropped up with Karmic
and KMS as well. If I suspend with lid, after resume resolutions are
totally wrong and sometimes the displays are garbled. If I use suspend
from the shutdown menu, all goes well.

I suspect this is the same bug, because it's strongly dependant on using
the lid.

This feels weird. Note that there used to be a 1024x768 mode detected on

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 398183] [NEW] intel driver seems to have lost tv output quirk

2009-07-11 Thread Andreas Schildbach
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

My Notebook (Dell Latitude X1) does not have a TV output. Nevertheless,
xrandr shows

VGA1 connected 800x600+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 519mm x
324mm
[...]
LVDS1 connected 800x600+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 264mm x
159mm
[...]
TV1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

On previous Ubuntu versions, the intel driver contained a quirk to not
show TV output for several notebooks. There seems to be something wrong
with the quirk.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 380722] Re: GeForce 8800 GTS was not auto-detected

2009-06-27 Thread Andreas Schildbach
Hi Bryce, I have just reinstalled Jaunty. Here is what is installed by
default:

$ dpkg -l "*nvidia*"
ii nvidia-173-modaliases 173.14.16-0ubuntu1
ii nvidia-180-modaliases 180.44-0ubuntu1
ii nvidia-71-modaliases 71.86.08-0ubuntu1
ii nvidia-96-modaliases 96.43.10-0ubuntu1
ii nvidia-common 0.2.11
un nvidia-glx

As you can see, the modaliases packages are installed. However, the
Hardware Drivers dialog is empty. I would expect an NVidia selection
there. From my memory, as soon as I install nvidia-glx, NVidia would
show up - but at that point it's already too late.

I'd like to give you the chance to collect any debug information you
need. Could you give detailed instructions for what you want me to do?
If you want me to install from the edgers repo, could you list all
binary packages I should install from there?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 380722] Re: GeForce 8800 GTS was not auto-detected

2009-06-27 Thread Andreas Schildbach
Hi Bryce, I can't really reproduce this bug, because I do not know how
to revert to a virgin installation without reinstalling.

I can only guess that the modaliases packages were not automatically
installed and they got installed by installing nvidia-glx-180.

However, which binary packages from that edgers repo do you want me to
try out? I tried nvidia-glx-180 and it does not get activated properly
(after rebooting the 'nv' driver is still active, despite 'Hardware
Drivers' saying that the 'nvidia' driver is active). Proprietary drivers
seem to be quite a mess.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 386823] [NEW] [wishlist] xrandr should have option to horizontally center

2009-06-13 Thread Andreas Schildbach
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: x11-xserver-utils

When using xrandr --below or --above, it would be convenient to have an
option to horizontally center the added screen, rather than the current
left-aligning. If I want to center, I have to calculate the center
position myself.

Most people with vertically stacked dual screens will more or less
center them.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 352708] Re: [i915] dualscreen: some screen stays dark after suspend/resume via lid

2009-06-13 Thread Andreas Schildbach
** Summary changed:

- [i915] external screen stays dark after suspend/resume via lid
+ [i915] dualscreen: some screen stays dark after suspend/resume via lid

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

On Jaunty latest on a Dell Latitude X1 (i915GMS), with an externally
- connected Dell 2405 configured for extended desktop, the external screen
- stays dark after going through suspend/resume.
+ connected Dell 2405, the external (sometimes the internal) screen stays
+ dark after going through suspend/resume via lid close.
+
+ I can mostly recover from the situation by Alt-F1 to shell and
+ restarting GDM. However, things are very weird afterwards. Both gnome
+ panels sits directly on top of each other. Maximizing windows on the
+ external screen result in ~100 pixel wide windows, although the screen
+ has got 1920 pixels and the desktop background spreads to all of those.
+
+ - Suspending via FUSA or pm-suspend instead works as expected.
+ - Turning on "Pipe-A forcing" does not help with the problem.
+ - I have the same issue on Karmic and Non-KMS (either EXA or UXA), but *not*
on KMS.
+ - The bug shows up in either extended desktop or mirrored configuration, does
not matter.
+ - Kind of related: When I deactivate the external display with screen
resolution prefs and close the lid, the external display is briefly activated
and used for (extended?) Desktop - why?

This is a regression from Intrepid and Hardy.

Indeed, the intel.ids file is missing. Restoring it from the previous

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 352708] Re: [i915] external screen stays dark after suspend/resume via lid

2009-05-20 Thread Andreas Schildbach
This is getting worse:

All of the above was dualscreen with extended desktop. Now, I tested a
mirrored configuration - this also shows the bug.

Then, I tried to just configure the notebook display, having the
external display shut off. When I close the lid, I briefly see the
external display being activated - just before the machine goes to
standby and all displays are switched off. When I re-open the lid,
suddenly only the external display is activated - it should not!

What is happening here?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 352708] Re: [i915] external screen stays dark after suspend/resume via lid

2009-05-20 Thread Andreas Schildbach
Some more insight: I tested several suspend methods without closing the
lid (pm-suspend, power-button), and they do not show the bug.
Furthermore, I tried closing the lid _after_ suspending with pm-suspend,
and resume via opening the lid. This also does not show the bug.

Re-test: If I suspend by closing the lid, the bug still shows up.

Thus, I guess this bug is only about suspending, not about resuming.

Is there anyone working on this / looking into it?
