[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2017687] Re: GTX 675MX fails with blank screen
Thank you for that. I'll have a look. I could also go back to Jammy as my primary OS on this machine. I'm hoping for a fix in 23.10. I'll start testing the daily builds soon. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1937914] [NEW] Laptop Monitor Turns off During Startup
Public bug reported: While starting the my laptop (Computer Model: HP Probook 450 G6 ProdID 5YH15UT#ABA Memory: 15.5 GB Processor: Intel Core i7-8565U CPU @ 1.80GHz x 8 Graphics: NV118 / Mesa Intel UHD Graphics 620 (WHL GT2) Disk Capacity: 256.1 GB) which runs (OS Name: Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS OS Type: 64-bit GNOME Version: 3.36.8 Windowing System: X11) the monitor turns off as soon as Ubuntu loads. The OS loads as normal and my external monitor still works, but my laptop monitor does not. I was able to fix the problem by pressing ESC as soon as the HP logo appears during start-up, then selecting "Advanced Ubuntu Options", then choosing an older version of Ubuntu (currently that's ...5.4.0-48..., while I believe the latest version is ...5.8.0-66...). It seems clear that this problem is caused by a bug that was introduced in one of the more recent updates (...5.8.0-59..., maybe?). I am not at all sure that the problem is in xorg; the package identification webpage just suggested that, if the monitor is blank when I would expect to see the Ubuntu logo during startup, then I should say that the relevant package is xorg. I am more than happy to run additional diagnostics that you would recommend if that would help you diagnose and fix the problem. Thank you. Without modeset=0 the screen gets scrambled. With it, it is correct. That's at least minimum functionality. I tried agpmode=0 but it didn't work. Also, modinfo didn't list a parameter by that name, so I chose the one that looked closest. I don't really know what happened, but I'm not demanding w.r.t. high-speed rendering, so I'm content. The problem disappeared after some time. Just got it now and nothing helped to restore the cursor size, it's very-very small. I tried gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface cursor-size 32 and also there was no reaction. I tried to Suspend/Resume the notebook, still no success. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1832959] [NEW] Wrong cursor size after screensaver
Public bug reported: Hi all, I have a HiDPI screen (2880x1620) with 2x scaling (default). Everything worked well for months until some of the upgrades broke something. The problem is with cursor size. It has 2x or even 4x less size (very small) after returning from screensaver/locking screen. So, for example, if i suspend and then resume my laptop or just lock the screen and then type the password to unlock. Curiously, but the problem becomes fixed if i take a screenshot by pressing Print Screen. In this case the cursor size immediately becomes the correct size. Some more tips: 1. If i press Ctrl-Alt-F1 (where the gdm is running) the cursor has correct size. 2. If i then press Ctrl-Alt-F2 and switch back to my current session, it again becomes 2x-4x less size. Thank you. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1778011] Re: SRU: PRIME Power Saving mode draws too much power
UPDATE: I found the packages in bionic-updates. After setting prime-select nvidia and logging out, I got the attached /var/log/gpu-manager.log. It says that nvidia is not loaded, and my laptop still runs hot. When I set prime-select intel, log out, and back in, nvidia is still not loaded (according to the log) and my laptop still runs hot. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1732513] [NEW] Unable to access windows on second display
Public bug reported: I am running Ubuntu 16.04.3 on a Macbook Pro using a dock with two monitors. While docked, the internal display is not operational, instead using only the two monitors. I have repeatedly encountered issues where application windows that are active on the left display are not selectable with the mouse. I can still use the Unity launcher bar and the top menu bar but not any open windows. The windows on the right monitor still work properly. If I drag applications from the right display to the left display, that application also becomes unclickable with the mouse. Windows that span across both display and clickable on the right display, but not the left display. This behavior happens occasionally (about once a week) with any running applications, and I have not been able to cause the behavior repeatably. I can still use the applications by using the Unity launcher to switch to the application, then using keyboard commands. I would note that usually when this happens, I have a Windows virtual machine running in Virtualbox. I'm not sure if that is related or just a coincidence. At times, I can get the OS operating correctly again by closing all open application windows. Other times, it requires a complete reboot to restore operation to the left side monitor. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1710051] Re: xorg crash/freeze when Chrome uses WebGL, caused by: GPU HANG: ... chrome ... reason: Hang on render ring, action: reset
For the help of other users, I just want to mention that in Ubuntu 17.04, I ended up switching back to stable xorg and *removing* xserver- xorg-video-intel, as suggested in some online documentation, in order to force the modesetting driver to run. I'd see modesetting and glamoregl modules loading in the Xorg.0.log file. Then, I disabled hardware acceleration in Chrome, using the official setting available in Chrome settings. (Not via a flag.) Search for "acceleration" in chrome://settings and then un-check that option. With these two corrective actions, I seem to have a stable machine, even when running Chrome day-in day-out for a long time in gnome-shell. I also can't force a crash with Facebook 3D images any longer. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1278223] Re: Mouse Flickering after adding 3rd Monitor
I am just now affected by this bug, using a DisplayPort monitor for the first time. OS: Ubuntu 17.04 x64 Kernel: 4.10.0-37 X.Org X Server : 1.19.3 Monitor 1: 1920 x 1080 - Laptop's Native Monitor Monitor 2: 1920 x 1080 - DisplayLink (USB-C) connected MB16AC ASUS Monitor In an interesting twist: my cursor flickers on both screens, but far more often on my laptop screen. On my laptop screen, the cursor flickers about 10 times/second. Also, a couple of days later, I experienced another full system hang. I was using GPU-accelerated Chrome at the time, but it was when a new page was loading. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1710051] [NEW] xorg crash/freeze when Chrome uses WebGL, caused by: GPU HANG: ... chrome ... reason: Hang on render ring, action: reset
Public bug reported: I am running a Lenovo X1C 4th Generation on Ubuntu 17.04. With the stock xserver-xorg-video-intel, I am able to reliably reproduce a complete Xorg hang -- that occasionally results in a full system hang, requiring reboot -- simply by opening a 360 photograph (using WebGL under the hood) on Facebook.com running in Chrome with hardware acceleration enabled. This is using modesetting and thus glamor. A similar hang also happens with this driver using certain software leveraging the GPU or hardware acceleration, for example the proprietary Zoom Video app. But since the Facebook example works very reliably (it crashes without fail), it has been good for testing/reproduction. On a stock Ubuntu 17.04, this crash would result in a total system hang requiring a reboot. However, by enabling CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE on my Xorg version using GNOME tweak, I was able to induce the crash, press CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE, and end up in a virtual terminal. From there, I could inspect dmesg (to find the message reported in the summary, which has also been reported elsewhere on bug trackers in various forms). This is the more precise dmesg entry: GPU HANG: ecode 9:0:0x86dd, in chrome [24053], reason: Hang on render ring, action: reset I could also capture the state of the GPU/drm error by looking in /sys/class/drm/card0/error. That has been attached to this ticket. Some interesting notes about this: - I could make Chrome not crash by turning off hardware acceleration in its advanced settings. In this case, chrome://gpu would show it is no longer using hardware acceleration. It would thus software accelerate WebGL on Facebook.com. And thus, no hang/crash. - I upgraded to the xserver-xorg-video-intel version that is in this PPA: https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/ubuntu/graphics-drivers -- after this, the problem went away, definitively. I have only been running this version for a day, but have had no crashes, and the Facebook WebGL reproduction case is no longer a reproduction case. My suspicion is that this is a bug deep in the intel driver and its interaction with certain GPUs, since the hang has happened in more than one userland program, and seems to be "repaired" by recent updates in the above-linked PPA. ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Attachment added: "contents of /sys/class/drm/card0/error immediately AFTER a GPU hang/crash" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1710051/+attachment/4930447/+files/drm_card0_error.log ** Description changed: I am running a Lenovo X1C 4th Generation on Ubuntu 17.04. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1691852] [NEW] Mouse buttons don't work on second display
Public bug reported: I am running Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS with the 4.8.0-52-generic kernel. The computer is a MacBook Pro 10,1. I am using the proprietary Nvidia display driver 375.66. I have encountered a new bug multiple times today, that I have never seen before. I would guess this is an xorg problem, but nothing has been changed there to cause this bug to appear today. Expected Behavior: Mouse pointer properly interacts with all open windows and UI buttons on both monitors. Problem Behavior: Mouse works properly for interactions on monitor 1. Mouse pointer moves properly on monitor 2, but mouse buttons have no impact on anything when the pointer is on the second monitor. Windows functioning properly on display 1 fail to respond to mouse buttons when moved to display 2. When a window is partially displayed on both monitors, the mouse works properly for the part of the window shown on monitor 1, but does not work for the part of the window shown on monitor 2. This behavior only began today, which is odd because the only software changes today were updates to iproute2:amd64 and libjasper1:amd64. This issue remains following a reboot, and impacts the second monitor for all workspaces. I had upgraded packages yesterday and had no problems then, just problems follwing the upgrade today. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1568604] Re: Mouse cursor lost when unlocking with Intel graphics
Hi all, I've been running Xubuntu 16.04 since about Feb 2016, and this has been an issue for ages. Prior to seeing the fix for Ctrl+Alt+F1 -> Ctrl+Alt+F7 (which works), the fix for me was navigating to Chrome web browser, logging into Netflix, and playing a video. I've no idea why, and I'm not proposing this as a fix for anyone (clearly the above combination is quicker/easier), but I'm hoping it might help pin down the cause. I don't have the technical skills to contribute a patch myself, but I was prompted to comment because I'm a bit worried that we're over a month past a release and seeing this bug - which has been around for 2/3 months before release - on an LTS, and still we don't even have it assigned. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1568604 Title: Mouse cursor lost when unlocking with Intel graphics To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xorg-server/+bug/1568604/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1493888] Re: FGLRX incompatible with gcc 5
I hit this today when upgrading from 15.04 to 15.10 on Dell with hybrid graphics. It booted into safe graphics mode, offering a list of graphic operations to try. I didn't touch that and instead ssh'd into the system. There I looked at /etc/apt/sources.list and saw that wiley-updates was represented. Next I ran: $ sudo apt-get update Which failed with: E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. So I played along: $ sudo dpkg --configure -a This ran well and stopped to prompt me to replace or keep some ATI related files. I opted for replace in every case by answering "Y". It installed a bunch of stuff and I saw it compile the fglrx module. After it completed I rebooted with: $ sudo shutdown -r now It rebooted and graphics worked again. glxgears seems happy. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.
Hi, I made a comment some time ago on what fixed this for me in comment #790: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video- intel/+bug/993187/comments/790 Since then, although it has been pretty stable under 3.4.0-030400.201205210521, I was still getting [albeit less frequently] complete freezups that show exactly the same symptoms as I reported before. The following NEW FIX has in contrast been COMPLETELY ROCK SOLID [not a single crash yet] in so far as no hardware freezeups are concerned, and I have been hammering the video display on the main KDE login session. I am also remotely accessing that session through x11vnc, and also run 2 separate NX sessions in the background, all of which are very busy used interactively. When I used to try running 2 busy NX sessions + an x11vnc session on the main KDE login session, it would not take too long for a complete hardware lockup to occur - within an hour easily with 2 busy NX sessions [I only had good stability with the one x11vnc session to the main KDE desktop under 12.04.x LTS]. I am also running virtualbox guests in the NX and x11vnc sessions [Note that I have 32GB memory so it's viable to run lots of sessions virtualbox guests]. The FIX is quite simply: upgrade from Kubuntu 12.04.5 LTS - 14.04.1 LTS (note that as of right now, if you upgrade to 14.04, you will in fact be taken to 14.04.1. Hope this may help others. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1303271] [NEW] Spacebar and top-row 4 not working since upgrade to trusty
Public bug reported: Since upgrading to 14.04 Trusty the space-bar and top-row 4 don't work normally in the GUI, but they do work in the text console. Shift-space works, and shift-4 produces a $, etc. The 4 on the number-pad works fine. I have tried adding and removing keyboard layouts but it doesn't help. Other computers I have upgraded don't have this problem. I've tested this with both a wireless USB keyboard and a wired PS2 keyboard; there's no difference. Beyond the xev information below, I'm not sure how else to debug this. Here's the xev output from pressing space.
