[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1707691] Re: [xenial] xserver-xorg-dev should depend on libxfont1-dev

2017-08-20 Thread Brendan Holmes
"Thanks Timo. Tag updated. Looks good, I got a successful build +
connect using xserver-xorg-dev and libx1font-dev" - yes I can confirm

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1573959] Re: On-screen text disappears after suspend

2016-05-04 Thread Brendan Shillingford
Update: my current workaround is now to remove xserver-xorg-video-intel,
and instead use the built in modesetting driver. So far, I've had no
issues, and acceleration works fine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1573959] Re: On-screen text disappears after suspend

2016-04-27 Thread Brendan Shillingford
Workaround:

Set the COGL_ATLAS_DEFAULT_BLIT_MODE env var to a value other than
"texture-render", which is the default.

Appears to be this bug: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=88584

See comment 17 for technical details; the details he lists are
consistent with what I played around with.. disabling 2D acceleration
eliminates the bug but obviously that is not desirable.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1261916] Re: Missing letters in spice client session with KVM guest

2014-11-22 Thread Brendan Perrine
I can reproduce this on ubuntu with unity as a guest when using a
resolution above 1024x768 in a guest in ubuntu 14.04 and with a daily
iso of 15.04. I have only reproduced this in lubuntu if I installed a
composite manager compton and set resolution above 1024x768. Lubuntu
14.10 vms in spice did not immediatly trigger the bug with high
resolution. killing compton and logging out and the display turns back
to normal.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1248256] Re: [MacBookPro10, 1] Plugging in displayport monitor causes kworker to take 100% CPU

2014-04-04 Thread Brendan
Dale,

Thank you for the excellent work reproducing and tracking down this bug.
What do you think the next step should be? Is there an appropriate place
to file this as a bug against the kernel?

I'm honestly surprised it doesn't seem to be affecting more people. Are
there really so few people using external monitors over display port?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1248256] Re: [MacBookPro10, 1] Plugging in displayport monitor causes kworker to take 100% CPU

2014-04-04 Thread Brendan
FWIW, I've got a Dell Monitor and bug #1020221
is reporting this issue on a ThinkPad, so I don't think it's exclusively an
Apple-hardware problem. You might be correct that it's a somewhat unusual setup.

I'm happy to help out, but I am a total novice when it comes to kernel
debugging. Let me know if there's anything I can contribute.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1248256] Re: [MacBookPro10, 1] Plugging in displayport monitor causes kworker to take 100% CPU

2014-04-04 Thread Brendan
For Ubuntu users, the relevant kernel packages are available here:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

I haven't tested any of them yet, but I will try rolling back to a 3.8.X
kernel next week.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1248256] Re: Plugging in displayport monitor causes kworker to take 100% CPU

2014-01-30 Thread Brendan
The bug does still occur on Trusty. I did a fresh install from the
nightly builds (the AMD64-Mac ISO), and plugged in the monitor while
running `top`. kworker takes up 100% of CPU and makes the system
extremely unresponsive.

I rebooted, and ran apport-collect in order to generate the updated
debug information.

Thanks for your time, please let me know if there's anything else you
need from me. Somebody in the Ubuntu forums thought they might have a
workaround, here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2191275

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-01-07 Thread Brendan Brigham
I was having the problem using desktop.
Intel i3
MSI H55m-E33 mobo
Asus ENGT 240 gpu
8g ram at the time, now 16g

Constant freezes with no recourse other than powering down. I am now
using Linux Mint 13 Cinnimon, 3.2.0-23generic with not so much as one
hickiup. When I first switched to Mint I was still on the 8g ram so
that's a non issue. I give up wondering what the issue really is, Mint
works for me. I think there have been a couple who have had a problem or
two though, IDK.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-01-07 Thread Brendan Brigham
Hi Daniel, sleep disabled. I wasn't using any screen savers or anything.
I could be doing anything from working on my conky in gedit, reading a
text document, to watching a video, didn't matter how hard I was using
anything. When it wanted to freeze, it would freeze. At times it would
go a couple hours and I would think I was out of the woods, then I could
be every 5 minutes. No rhyme no reason.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-11-21 Thread Brendan Brigham
Well yeah, but Ubuntu without Unity and Compiz and it is stable. I had
constant freezes with 12.04 64bit with Intel processor. Freezes
persisted with every fix until I changed the kernal. Then with
subsiquent updates from Ubuntu not matching the kernal I eventually had
other little issues, nothing a big deal but didn't want to mess with it
anymore seems it wasn't how it was supposed to be. Stability also
increased with dumping neuvo(sp) drivers and Nvidia finally fixing
theirs. I'm not bashing Ubuntu, but there is definitely a problem that
shouldn't be there. I will stay with Mint until it's sorted out.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068661] Re: 1002:6740 Unity does not load after installing fglrx-installer Radeon HD 6700M Series

2012-10-23 Thread Brendan Edmonds
Christopher,

This has been an issue for me since 10.04, so this bug has existed for
2.5 years. I recently just reinstalled Ubuntu and have the most upto
date system. Now compiz is taking ~15% of my cpu.

When can we expect this issue to be looked at and fixed, and not be put
at the bottom of the pile? Or heck tell me how I can turn off compiz.

If I remember the last time I looked at how the driver works, it uses a
different way of managing the displays (I have had a lot of problems
with dual monitors and ati drivers in the past. The driver doesn't use
Xrandr to manage resolutions etc. it uses another library that I can't
think of the name of at the moment.

I think this is the problem, unity is not backward compatible with the
library.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs no longer function while using proprietary drivers

2012-10-19 Thread Brendan Donegan
When certifying systems with Ubuntu, we only test with the open-source
graphics drivers installed by Ubuntu. If these do not work properly then
we will try with the proprietary drivers. So this particular system has
never been tested by us with the proprietary drivers, and it is correct
to refer to it as being certified since it apparently works fine with
the open-source ones. Is there a particular reason why the proprietary
NVIDIA driver is desirable over nouveau for this system?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1028617] [NEW] Cursor shakes violently when connected to power source - makes touchpad cursor unusable

2012-07-24 Thread Brendan Griffin
Public bug reported:

Using Ubuntu 12.04, 64-bit version, installed on Lenovo X220 laptop.
Fresh default install and settings configuration.

When the laptop is plugged into a power source, the touchpad's onscreen
cursor (the white arrow that shows position) shakes excessively when
trying to use the touchpad to control the cursor. The shaking is so bad
that it essentially makes the touchpad unusable. For example, trying to
click the minimize button in a window's upper left corner will routinely
result in accidentally clicking the close button because of the cursor's
shaking.

The problem is NOT present when Ubuntu is running on battery. But this
means I can never have Ubuntu plugged in and charging while I use it,
which is very inconvenient at times.

I'm using the power block and cable that came with the X220. But I also
tried using a larger power block and cable that came with another Lenovo
model - this power block is approved for use with the X220 and is sold
on the Lenovo website as an X220 accessory. But this larger power block
did not improve the shaking behavior either.

I have no special settings enabled for the touchpad. But changing the
settings has no effect on this shaking behavior either. I attached a
screenshot of my Touchpad settings [please excuse the HUD's presence - I
cannot get the HUD to NOT appear when I press ALT+PrtSc to take a
screenshot (I guess this is another bug)].

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-06-15 Thread Brendan Brigham
For those with dedicated Nvidia GC's, Nvidia has apparently fixed their
drivers. I couldn't use them previously due to lack of multiple monitor support
but they now work, which solved the constant hard freezes for me instantly.
I've been pushing it running videos on both screens while recording hd video
from my webcam without a single problem.
It's looking like Nouveau has the issue ?

They've changed the bug report I linked to two posts up to reflect it...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1012916] Re: [nouveau] 12.04 Unity 3d hard freezes

2012-06-14 Thread Brendan Brigham
Good evening Daniel, I've pushed my system pretty hard running videos on both
monitors while recording video from my hd webcam and every other thing I could
think of and have had not one glitch since the new Nvidia drivers.
Definitely a Nouveau issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently while watching videos (Fixed by 3.3.6 kernel)

2012-06-01 Thread Brendan Brigham
@ Brad Figg...What exactly does this command do, does it send crash
reports and other relevant information directly to Launchpad ? If so, I
will log back into 3d and can freeze it within 30 seconds lol.

I tried the ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa two days ago, wasn't any help. Still
experiencing hard freezes in 3d. Unity 2d seems fine still.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently

2012-05-30 Thread Brendan Brigham
Tryin to think of the possibilities, how would it be a hardware issue as
this a pretty wide range of hardware ? Mine and many others have all new
hardware. That would kinda suck. I just got a bunch of updates so I'm
gonna try 3d again tonight. If it keeps freezing I will create a bug
report for Unity 3d.
