[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 984248] Re: Logging out of sessions results in a transitional black textual screen --12.10 upgrade

2014-01-23 Thread Chascon
The screen on the model I reported has failed on me. I now use an
external monitor hooked up via vga. I still get blanking but inquiries
tell me that this is due to variability in card and monitor resolution
tolarancy. So, I can't speak to this any longer.

Now if Ubuntu recognized the monitor via DVI, I could futher provide
feedback. I don't think it's a proprietary DVI as it fits a regular DVI
cable (dual-link DVI is what wikipedia says).

I came across another fix, when changing the greeter stopped working.
For those who removed Unity, removing it sometimes uninstalls unity-
greeter and reinstalling it installs a whole lot of stuff some of which
fixed my low resolution issue. For some reason the other greeters don't
work.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1095203] Re: low graphics mode

2013-04-12 Thread Chascon
My fix being reinstalling unity-greeter. It installs a whole lot of
stuff, one of which surely fixed my low resolution issue. For some
reason I can't list the other greeters in lightdm.conf as doing so gives
a low resolution message. So I'm stuck with unity-greeter, but at least
I can run lightdm rather than gdm, which is flaky.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1095203] Re: low graphics mode

2013-04-10 Thread Chascon
I started to get the low res complaints after uninstalling Unity. You
can only uninstall so many things (unity desktop, unity menu stuff )
before things get wacky (on various fronts).

It took me months but I found out that removing unity components (menu,
desktop, etc) using the howtos on the net sometimes uninstalls unity-
greeter, which in turn causes the error.

So that was my fix.

The problem is that installing unity-greeter pulls in a ton of
unnecessary stuff such as rhythmbox and lens packages, but that' s for
another time an place.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1047156] Re: EDID does not allow LCD widescreen configuration

2013-02-14 Thread Chascon
I know this bug report has been closed but I'd still like to leave a
record for myself and for any other having the same problems.

@Rolf
You might have been right about there being more than one issue at play here.
Since reporting this, I've had to stop using lightdm because of it sending me
into low graphics mode (message about running in low graphics mode in
original report).

I found out that lightdm's greeter is defined in
/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf and as of recent:

greeter-session=unity-greeter

I investigated further and realized that there is also a lightdm-gtk-greeter.
I installed it and changed the above file to reflect:

greeter-session=lightdm-gtk-greeter

Result
No more being thrown into low graphics mode. And lightdm seems less buggy than
GDM.

I still use ~/.xprofile as defined in my previous comment. I'm not sure
if it's still helping out at the moment, but it's still there, as a fall
back if things break, usually during major upgrades.

No xorg.conf is being used.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1047156] Re: EDID does not allow LCD widescreen configuration

2012-09-24 Thread Chascon
After the system configured itself, it still boots into 1224 x 768
(4:3), which makes real estate go off-screen at the right and bottom,
affecting both lightdm and the desktop environment. See my bug report at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/lightdm/+bug/1047140

Solution:
I've had to force the resolution with the following.
xrandr --newmode 1440x900_60.00 106.47 1440 1520 1672 1904 900 901 904 932
+HSync +VSync
xrandr --addmode DVI-0 1440x900_60.00
xrandr --output DVI-0 --mode 1440x900_60.00

In place of the first line, the following also has worked for me --something I
just got off the net, if I recall.
xrandr --newmode 1440x900_60.00 106.50 1440 1528 1672 1904 900 903 909 934
-hsync +vsync

Now, I've had to automate it by placing that into ~/.xprofile

Results:
- X starts with the native mode 1440x 900 at 60 Hz, or just shy of 60, 59 if I
recall. It blanks out black once or twice though.
- lightdm sometimes entirely fits onto the physical screen, sometimes it
doesn't.
- It takes forever to reach lightdm. Might this be the EDID issue, causing a
delay while Ubuntu decides how to treat my LCD screen? I've run various
diagnostics and my HD is fine, only one fan is out, which is noted by the Apple
diagnostic. This MacBook Pro used to boot fine with prior versions of Ubuntu
which didn't have this TFT issue.

Expected results:
I guess it goes without saying that the expected results should be that the
system should auto-configure itself so as to not require user intervention. And
it should not go into an episodic and alternating blanking loop.

Comments:
I've had the same issue with another (LCD?) monitor on another Ubuntu 120.10
beta install, and I've had to resort to the same fix. Info to come. So I
suspect that this is a LCD problem or one of just having low tolerance for
defective EDID.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1047146] [NEW] xorg fails to configure native 1440 x 900 on LCD widescreen

2012-09-06 Thread Chascon
Public bug reported:

The screen is a LCD Citizen C19604HD that should run 1440x 900 at 60 Hz
(as per manual). Upon entering the desktop the session is also
excessively large, 1224 x 768 (4:3) and only allows a worse setting of
800 x 600 (4:3).

I must say, that every once in a while, Display panel will show the
following available (I've tried all of them) resolutions. The problem is
that they're usually not accessible. For the sake of completeness, I'll
list them all, although I'm only really interested in the top one.

1440 x 900
1366 x 768
1360 x 768
1280 x 1024
1280 x 960
1280 x 800
1280 x 768
1152 x 864
1024 x 768
1024 x 576
832 x 624
800 x 600

When confronted with the black screen, I've tried editing xorg.conf, but that's
resulted in black screens, even black ttys, forcing me to do the following
workaround:
-boot up on a live-cd,
-mount the HD and
-sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
-reboot onto the HD

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1047156] [NEW] EDID does not allow LCD widescreen configuration

2012-09-06 Thread Chascon
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu has new strict EDID guidelines that does not allow LCD widescreen
configuration.

Symptoms:
Constant flickering on and off of screen content, including distortion similar
to a bad tv reception.

The screen is a LCD Citizen C19604HD that should run 1440x 900 at 60 Hz
(as per manual), which apparently does not have proper EDID. I should
note this setup had no problems prior, until tty1 started to complain
about a bad EDID checksum during 12.10 beta.

Fix:
Attempting to set my own xorg.conf evoked a message about running in low
graphics mode. It asked if I wanted to (re)configure. I confirmed, after which
I no longer needed xorg, conf, nor presumably Option IgnoreEDID
on in xorg.conf which made xorg sessions usable.

What should happen
The system should be self-healing. The user should not have to grapple with
xorg.conf (for hours or days on end with unfamiliar concepts [EDID] and
work-arounds), and even less after all that time and effort just to have the
system say, Hey, I don't like what you're doing. Here, let me do it.. This
(self-repair) hook should be invoked sooner in the trouble shooting process.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1031604] [NEW] cntrl-alt-del does not kill Xorg

2012-07-31 Thread Chascon
Public bug reported:

Setting the traditional cntrl-alt-del to kill X in the gnome-control-
center (Keyboard Layout/Options/Key sequence to kill the X server) does
not allow killing of X while logged in, despite that the sequence does
kill the log-in display prior to entering a desktop session.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 968536] Re: Natural Scrolling broken with software-center in 12.04

2012-05-12 Thread Chascon
It seems that fix is _only_ for trackpads.

@Luke
... xinput list-props will give you something like this:
Code:
Device 'SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad':
   Device Enabled (133): 1
...
   Synaptics Two-Finger Pressure (269): 282
   Synaptics Two-Finger Width (270): 7
   Synaptics Scrolling Distance (271): 112, 112
   Synaptics Edge Scrolling (272): 0, 0, 0
   Synaptics Two-Finger Scrolling (273): 1, 1
...

The interesting bit being the scrolling distance; replace that with a
negative value (with xinput set-int-prop), and you get inverted
scrolling.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 875375] Re: Resume fails after suspend/hibernate --post Oneiric upgrade

2012-05-10 Thread Chascon
Thanks Agoston.

I may try that in the future if need be, but I recently tried
suspending, apparently the only form of sleep available now (previous
versions allowed two forms), and to my surprise it worked on Precise
(testing). I haven't tried it since Precise has gone stable, though. The
transition was a little slow and noisy, but I'm not complaining.

I will have to try it again, and if it works on Precise stable I'll
change the status to fixed, since it's my bug report.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 875375] Re: Resume fails after suspend/hibernate --post Oneiric upgrade

2012-05-10 Thread Chascon
I see the article you linked says b43 wireless driver... So you're
referring to my pet peeve of a lousy supported wireless card by a
company called Broadcom. After having one on my iBook running Debian, I
won't ever again buy a laptop having a product of theirs. So no, the
MacBook Pro mentioned in this report does not have a card of theirs.

I think my card is an Atheros because the wikipedia specs say AR5007
chipset (and it worked out of the box). Broadcom models start with BCM.
I imagine you're using a proprietary driver and so it doesn't surprise
me that an issue this this would crop up. Regardless, your solution is
Broadcom specific, so it doesn't apply to this bug report. Thanks for
mentioning it, though.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 875375] Re: Resume fails after suspend/hibernate --post Oneiric upgrade

2012-04-12 Thread Chascon
Good news.
I decided to try suspend/hiberate today on a whim (just once). Apparently,
there is only one option now, just suspend. Anyway, I didn't expect it to work,
but my upgrade o Precise has suspend working, at least with 3.2.0-23-generic.
The upgrade is still a beta, but hopefully this sticks, and all the kernels get
this capability.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 927391] [NEW] LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo reports errors

2012-02-05 Thread Chascon
Public bug reported:

I found that LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo reports some errors:

libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/dri/tls/r300_dri.so
libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/dri/r300_dri.so
libGL: Can't open configuration file /etc/drirc: No such file or directory.
libGL: Can't open configuration file /home/user/.drirc: No such file or
directory.
libGL: Can't open configuration file /etc/drirc: No such file or directory.
libGL: Can't open configuration file /home/user/.drirc: No such file or
directory.

I did some digging around and found that
http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/glxinfo mentions Surrounding these
lines there may be additional messages indicating errors. In particular,
if the driver is not found in the mentioned path, OpenGL will try to
fall back to the software renderer called swrast_dri.so. This is an
indication that the DRI drivers are not installed correctly.

Having said the above, I would assume the below to report software rendering
but it doesn't.
glxinfo | grep render

direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on ATI RV530
GL_NV_conditional_render, GL_ARB_draw_elements_base_vertex,

So in any case, it seems Ubuntu has a problem correctly installing DRI drivers.
The thing that confuses me is that I seem to have accel because I can run Unity
3D, direct rendering is listed as Yes (see below), and most of the desktop
effects I run do so reasonably well, although I'm not impressed with a rating
of 303 frames in 5.0 seconds. But then again I'm no expert and perhaps do not
distinguish between accel, 2D, and 3D in a more than superficial manor. Despite
my limitations of knowledge, I believe the the above error suggests a problem
of sort sort, perhaps fine grained.

A little more on that error popup. It's from GoldenDict and tehy've been aware
of Record being broken for sometime now, although from 2009 (so this might not
be applicable or it might indicate a regression):
https://github.com/gennady/goldendict/commit/230ab47891283216d3abd43fbb66b8f27125ec1b

There is a fix noted in https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=120240
that suggests increasing nproc limits to 1500 (hard). I haven't tried this as
I'm not sure what nproc to change. I have various nprocs with low figures
listed in/etc/security/limits.conf and I don't know which one to edit, student,
faculty or ftp (I doubt it would be this ftp).

In any case, I doubt changing the limits would help considering that the
Gnome shell doesn't crash using the same file limits file.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 888872] Re: Unity 3D desktop crashes in Oneiric using ATI Mobility Radeon X1600

2011-12-10 Thread Chascon
I found and tried out a fix and made up my own version of it.

I noticed that Xorg.0.log.old gave the following.
Segmentation fault at address 0xb6211008
Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). Server aborting

Googling for Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). Server aborting
shows that Archlinux has had this issue too
(https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=119442). Based on that, the
following work-around works for me.

Create /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-modules.conf with the following
content.

Section Module
 Disable record
EndSection

Otherwise (my way)
Log out,
then from a tty, kill lightdm, and
issue sudo Xorg -configure or sudo X -configure.

In the resulting xorg.conf, make sure to Disable record rather than just
comment the line out.
Copy it to /etc/X11/
Restart lightdm
Log into X (although it didn't take for me till I logged out and back into X
yet again, so you may just want to reboot).

The result: no more crashes and X seems a little more responsive,
although this may be in my mind. There's an error pop up at the start of
the X session about the record function not working, but that is
expected. So I assume that may the the problematic software.

I also noticed that Xorg.0.log and other logs give me the following error.
(EE) Failed to load module fglrx (module does not exist, 0)

I thought it might be unimportant if it weren't for a segmentation fault
linked to fglrx reported at
http://phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?22972-Ubuntu-10.04-fglrx-seg-
fault.

I'll write it up as a separate bug, anyway since Ubuntu borked my fglrx
install .

So how's that for incomplete? A workaround and potential sources of the
bug are ID'd.

So it seems, although I don't know if it's related to the problem at
hand, Ubuntu has a problem correctly installing DRI drivers. If it's not
related I could open a bug on the matter.

glxinfo | grep render

direct rendering: Yes

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 888872] Re: Unity 3D desktop crashes in Oneiric using ATI Mobility Radeon X1600

2011-11-26 Thread Chascon
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected oneiric regression-update ubuntu

** Description changed:

Summary: Unity 3D desktop crashes in Oneiric using ATI Mbility Radeon
  X1600

  Problem:
There doesn't seem to be rhyme or reason to this, be it having Firefox
running, opening a link in Chromium to open in a new tab or watching a .flv
video clip, using the subcontextual menus of Thunderbird, or watching videos in
Totem. The desktop crashes bringing one to the login screen. Sometimes the
desktop crashes as it's appearing.

The last thing one sees is a black screen with text, and something about
Pulseaudio, but I'm not sure it's an error as I see no red text (just
white), and there's no time to read it before the login screen appears.

  Steps to reproduce:
  Login using Unity 3d.
  Use your system.

  Results
  The desktop crashes
  Login screen appears

  Expected results:
  No crashes.

  Comments:
At one point I thought the problem was due to indicator-weather, but I
removed it, and although crashes became less frequent, they increased
drastically two days ago (after updating).

This behaviour was non-existent in Natty.

I went a whole day without this behaviour by logging in using Unity 2D,
and went along using all the above apps to no crashes.

I noticed there is a history of problems with Radeon video drivers, but
they didn't describe this type of crash, and they seemed to be fixed in
Natty, which makes me think it might not be a regression.

The only other issue I can think of that might be related is that
turning compiz plugins on and off (Widgets Layer, and Zoom Desktop),
presumably the non-default one, crashes Unity. I looked into it and
sources say that this could be an issue with my video card, which I find
outrageous considering it's only a few years old (well within the 5 year
margin for compiz support), which points to a faulty driver and/or lack
  of proper driver support.

System Info lists my graphics support as Gallium 0.4 on ATI RV530. I
found that odd. Wikipedia says that the my video card, although based on
the RV530, is NOT the ATI RV530. So, I don't know if it's a matter of
the wrong driver being assigned and there's no longer a Xorg.conf file
to check, so I'm at a loss.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 888872] Re: Unity 3D desktop crashes in Oneiric using ATI Mobility Radeon X1600

2011-11-23 Thread Chascon
To avoid confusion, allow me to clarify ...

The possible X bug, NOT the focus of this bug report, occurs while
logging out, shutting down, or rebooting.

The bug at hand behaviour is a crash that occurs during normal operation
within an running desktop environment, Unity 3D.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 888872] Re: Unity 3D desktop crashes in Oneiric using ATI Mobility Radeon X1600

2011-11-23 Thread Chascon
I was hoping that the new compiz upgrade would have taken care of the
issue I'm describing, but it doesn't.

I don't think it's an X11 issue or else I'd have the same problem with
2d Unity and certainly with Gnome shell or any of the other Gnome
desktops (3D or 3D). From my testing, mostly Gnome shell, it's not an
issue on any of the Gnome environments. So it stands to reason the
problem is with the Unity plugin itself.

The only possible sign of an X issue is when logging out, my screen goes
black and momentarily shows a terminal/console before *DM kicks in. I'm
not sure if that should happen and if it isn't supposed to it's an
instance of X crashing. Having said that, even if this black out is a
valid X issue, I don't think it's related to the bug at hand because the
bug at hand behaviour does NOT occur in Gnome shell + (as well as not
occurring under Unity 2D).

It's clearly a Unity 3D bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 427995] [NEW] X11 fails with xserver-xorg-video-ati or xserver-xorg-video-r128 with no devices detected

2009-09-11 Thread Chascon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Problem:
No video with ATI Rage 128 card and ati or r128 driver --at least with the
RL/VR AGP model.

Components affected?:
2:1.6.0-0ubuntu14
xserver-xorg-video-r128, version: 6.8.0+git20090201.08d56c88-1
xserver-xorg-video-ati, vesion: 1:6.12.1-0ubuntu2

Summary:
X fails to start with the appropriate drivers for the ATI Rage video card.
It'll start with the either the r128 and ati hashed out in the corresponding
xorg.conf. I've deinstalled both xserver-xorg-video-r128 and
xserver-xorg-video-ati at the same time to see if X is using wither of them and
it still starts.

Reconfiguring X
-At one point or another I've tried the Debian dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
utility from cli to no avail.
-I've also tried reconfiguring with a pop-up that notifies that X is operating
in low graphics mode --happens when vesa driver is specified and sometimes also
when ati or r128 is hashed out in xorg.conf (if memory serves).

Upon looking at the xorg.conf file generated by the X? utility notifying
me of low graphics operation, I noticed that the monitor section was
detailed thin and had to fill it out with the missing HorizSync and
VertRefresh information. I also had to add a screen section with known
and working resolutions --all of which improved resolution but still
this is without the proper drivers.

To sum it up:
X works in 2 instances:
-when either the ati or r128 drivers are not specified in xorg.conf
-when vesa is specified as the driver

Oddly enough, I get better FPS with vesa.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Install both r128 and ati drivers.

sudo aptitude install xserver-xorg-video-r128 xserver-xorg-video-ati.

2. Log into X with either r128 or ati drivers specified in the
appropriate lines and see X fail to start, despite specifying BusID, as
PCI:00:10:0 or PCI:0:10:0. I got that from the following,

lspci | grep ati
0001:10:13.0 Ethernet controller: Digital Equipment Corporation DECchip
21142/43 (rev 41)

3. Log reports,
(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

Added information:
You'll notice (from the contained xorg.conf) that I've specified PCI mode and
even forced it to no avail. Under Device,
 Option BusType PCI
 Option ForcePCIMode true
 Option DRI off

I've also tried hashing out,
Option EnablePageFlipOn

Disabling the historically problematic DRI and GLX drivers (by hashing and
Disable, although not concurrently) do not make a difference, either --as
does fiddling with the UseFBDev option. ie.,
# Loaddri
# Disable dri
 Loadglx
# Disable glx

Alternatively,
1. Remove both r128 and ati drivers, xserver-xorg-video-ati and
xserver-xorg-video-r128

2. Hash out video drivers specified in xorg.conf under Device
# Driver r128
# Driver ati

3. Log into X

4. X starts but video acceleration is _very slow_. glxgears gives about
10-25 FPS, when Warty (and Hoary?) gave me about 350+ (using the ati or
r128 driver) --if memory serves.

Considerations: I see there is no package named agpgart that was once used (on
Debian and Warty?) --without which --as I understand it-- acceleration with
r128 and/or ati is __not__ possible with these (Rage 128) cards at least (but
one problem at a time as video with native driver takes precedence). I believe
agpgart support also had to be built into the kernel, adn I don't know much
about kernel support (as of late, anyway).

Once into X with out r128 or ati drivers, glxinfo does __not__ report
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Rage128 20010405 Pro AGP 4x x86/MMX/3DNow!

as one might expect but
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer.

It also reports:
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa Project
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.4
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20

Comments: I'm running an iMac ppc and know that powerpc support was
dropped, but I'm reporting on Rage 128 ATI hardware. No, I haven't tried
running the corresponding PPA and edge drivers.
